We’re beginning the day with some sad news, following the announcement that legendary British actor John Hurt has died at the age of 77.

The award-winning star had bravely battled pancreatic cancer since 2015, and his passing was confirmed by his agent, Charles McDonald, this morning.

Sir Hurt had a prestigious career in the world of film, winning awards for his roles in The Elephant Man, An Englishman in New York and Midnight Express.

His talent was introduced to an entire new generation in recent years, when he starred as wand-maker Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter movies.

Sir Hurt spoke candidly about the concept of death and the afterlife during his cancer battle, and remained characteristically optimistic.

“I hope I shall have the courage to say, ‘Vroom! Here we go! Let’s become different molecules!’” he told The Radio Times.

The star is survived by his wife, Anwen Rees-Myers, and sons Alexander and Nick.

Tributes have poured in for the actor following the sad news, with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling leading the way.

“So very sad to hear that the immensely talented and deeply beloved John Hurt has died. My thoughts are with his family and friends,” she tweeted.
