10 movies you either love or hate

Discover the movies people love or sometimes hate and see how we feel about them.

Popular culture has taught us that your favourite TV series or movie might not be liked by the rest of the world. This often causes multiple debates online and within friend groups – it’s fun and often needed! However, with so many movies to choose from, you should hit the jackpot with your selection at one time or the other, and even if you don’t, that’s fine too. A fitting example here is Game of Thrones and Batman. People were so convinced that both the series and film would not be successful. And if you are part of this fanbase, we bet you tried your best to convince others otherwise. But look at both franchises now, absolute superstardom. Here is a list of 10 movies you either love or hate.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

While Scott Pilgrim vs. the World might not be one of the movies filmed in Michigan compared to some of our top choices like Don’t Breathe, Batman vs. Superman, and also Dreamgirls, it remains a clear favorite on our list. Michael Cera plays the lead and title character, Scott Pilgrim, who meets a woman named Ramona and instantly falls for her. The catch, he needs to defeat her seven exes before they can begin a relationship. Now, this film is hailed by most as a true work of art and has even won multiple awards. The plot is a great concept, and the comic-like depictions of the characters and battle scenes are hilarious. Yet, many call this film a piece of bubble gum, and we simply don’t understand why. Love it or hate it, Scott Pilgrim is entertaining, and that’s good enough in our books.

Watchmen

A classic tale of a superhero gone rogue with a lot of little twists in between. It is classic and quite depressing at the same time. It received a lukewarm reception from viewers at large, while comic-book lovers praised the film for its raw take on superheroes. Oh, and it’s directed by Zack Snyder, so the dark tone and mood are a theme throughout the film.

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing was a classic love story when it was first released in 1987. Millions of people love this movie, not only for the dance moves but the fact that it featured the late Patrick Swayze. The overall dance scenes were what made this a classic. It’s also one of the films referenced quite a bit in pop culture due to its famous lines such as, “nobody puts baby in a corner”. But it lacked plot and story development and came with little substance. The story arc has been done to death, and even the fans of this 80s classic, realise this today. Maybe the upcoming sequel might redeem it? While we don’t hate it, we don’t love it either.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Sometimes fans can be quite extreme with their criticism, and we get it. You expect a certain calibre of quality, and man, Star Wars fans wanted the original trilogy when it came to The Phantom Menace. We feel this was a great film to start the second trilogy, and while some things could have been done better, we don’t completely hate it. That’s because we got Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi – which this year turned into a TV series on Disney plus; fingers crossed for a second season.

Vanilla Sky

While this film was a box office success, largely due to the lead actors, critics slammed the film. This sci-fi/thriller follows a publishing magnet played by Tom Cruise, who ends up with a scar on his face after a car accident. This leads to him questioning his life and everything about it. While many people did enjoy it, others were not convinced. Even with other A-list actors like Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Kurt Russell at the helm, it’s still a film many hate.

Forrest Gump

This is an iconic award-winning film, we can’t imagine why anyone would want to hate it. It stars Hollywood’s nicest actor, Tom Hanks. This polarising hit follows Forrest Gump, a man with a low IQ, who recounts his life throughout the film. It has love, heartache, and some wonderful and wholesome moments. This can never be hateful in anyone’s books, and if it is, please rewatch it!

Avatar

There is no denying that James Cameron is a wonderful director. He has given us countless classics, and Avatar is one of them. Set in a futuristic world where Earth’s resources have been depleted, a group called the Resources Development Administration mines for valuable minerals on a planet called Pandora. The problem is the inhabitants aren’t on board with this and one day decide to take the RDA down. The film received praise, and rightfully so. The only thing people hated about the film at the time was the runtime of 162 minutes.

Titanic

Titanic, is another James Cameron feature. This film does not deserve any hate at all. Maybe only for the scene, spoiler alert, where Rose lies down on the door floating in the ocean and Jack meets a fatal end – there was totally enough space for Jack, come on. It’s been the running joke of 2022. Do we hate it? Not a chance!

Indiana Jones 4

The franchise is the stuff of legends as the iconic Harrison Ford plays the title character. The first three films were loved by all, but while the film scored a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans have criticised it for not capturing its true essence first introduced in the 70s. Do we love it? No, but we don’t hate it either.

Iron Man

Famous old-school directors have long criticised superhero movies. Citing them as lacking in substance and creativity. But this could not be further from the truth. The first Iron Man set the tone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe we love today and propelled Robert Downey Jr. to superstar status. We love this one!
