Monthly Archives: September 2014

The September issues of fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire have long been regarded as the most significant publications of the year. Each one is usually a bumper issue profiling designers’ autumn/winter collections and with a superstar cover model.

We took a look through this year’s issues from the US and the UK and picked our favourite covers to share with you. Enjoy!

Vogue USA
Anna Wintour and co. went all out this year with not one but three stars on the front cover, with two foldout pages revealing a whopper 9 models in total. The main cover was graced by Cara Delevingne, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss, all photographed by Mario Testino. The magazine was shorter than last year at just 631 pages – that’s still a lot of reading, we reckon!

Mario even shared this cute behind-the-scenes snap on Twitter yesterday of Cara and Karlie waiting for the shoot to begin.

Vogue UK
Most Irish shops stock only the UK version of Vogue, so most likely it’s this cover you spotted on shelves over here. Another Cara shoot – this time she had the spotlight all to herself. Photographed again by Mario Testino, Cara wore a Seventies-inspired Louis Vuitton leather and silk dress.

Elle US
Kristen Stewart got locked up in Chanel for American Elle’s September cover.

The photo shoot inside the mag took inspiration from Chanel’s supermarket-style catwalk show this year, with Kristen posing alongside groceries at Fields Market in West Hills, California. There must have been a few surprised shoppers that day!

Elle UK
The gorgeous glamour girl/supermodel Kate Upton posed in a graphic print Prada coat, bare legs and gold platform shoes for Elle’s UK cover this year.

Marie Claire US
Blake Lively looked fabulous in Gucci on this year’s Marie Claire cover. She chatted to the magazine about husband Ryan Reynolds and their desire to have a huge family together, saying “I gotta get started. If I could spit out a litter of kids, I would.” Imagine how beautiful those kids are going to be!

Harper’s Bazaar US
Lady Gaga brought her adorable French bulldog Asia along for her Harper’s shoot. The singer wore top-to-toe Chanel, but in typical Lady Gaga style, she added some sex appeal with fishnet tights and a bare midriff.

Asia loved being in the spotlight, as Gaga revealed on Instagram when the cover was first published…

InStyle UK
Kate Bosworth looked like she’d been hanging out with Alice and the Mad Hatter in Wonderland when she posed in this amazing lace patchwork Valentino dress. We love it!

It’s barely been a month since model Danielle Lloyd cut ties with her cheating husband Jamie O’Hara, after he allegedly cheated on her.

She has kept a dignified silence on social media since the split, posting mainly family snaps of her three young sons. But now it seems the model has had another shock to deal with, after footballer Jamie was spotted out and about with Danielle’s friend Maria Fowler.

Maria and Jamie were seen leaving a Manchester nightclub together on Saturday night, before heading to a nearby hotel.

Former TOWIE star Maria took to Twitter yesterday to defend herself:

Meanwhile, Danielle also expressed her upset over social media, posting only this emotional quote:

Jamie and Danielle split up at the beginning of August, after the Sunday Mirror published an interview with a mystery woman who claimed she'd had sex with Jamie in his family home, while Danielle and the children were away.

Emigration is a huge part of our culture these days – be it a round-the-world trip, an opportunity to study abroad, or the standard “year in Australia/Canada/America.”

For many of those leaving Ireland, it’s not just parents and friends that are left behind, but a significant other too. Skype, WhatsApp and other technologies mean that you can now speak to anyone at the drop of a hat, no matter how far away you are, but can a relationship really survive on IMs and video chats alone?

Having given long-distance a go myself, I do believe that yes, it can be done, but only if both parties are committed to making the relationship work. It’s not enough to plan a Skype call, you both need to actually make a conscious effort to be online at the agreed time – even if your “real life” plans might get in the way. For me, that meant getting up at 6am to accommodate a 16 hour time difference, or looking on the funny side when I got a drunk phone call during my lunch break.

As for seeing each other, even if you know you won’t be together again for months, just having a plane/train/bus ticket booked – no matter how far in advance – at least gives you both something to work towards. I don’t know how many times I tried to make myself believe that ten weeks would “fly by – sure it’s only 70 days really!” But at least it was something real and tangible – we knew when we would be together again, we were able to plan for it, and that made being apart just a little bit easier.

Another benefit of going long-distance is that you are forced, even if it’s against your will, to be independent. It can be easy to lose sight of who the “real you” is in a long-term relationship, as you spend so much time in the company of your other half. Even though you’re still totally committed to your boyfriend/girlfriend when living far apart, you'll both have your own social lives and friends, which can only be a good thing.

Being constantly apart from the person you love can be difficult, and can even result in trust issues and other stresses. But I definitely agree that if a couple really are made for each other, then distance can only make their bond stronger. If you can survive months or even years apart and still have a solid relationship at the end, then you can take it as a sure sign that you two are built to last.

Well, we know that house prices in Dublin aren’t exactly cheap these days, but we’d rather camp in our parents’ front garden than live with this particular renter.

An ad posted on house-hunting site Daft.ie listed a double room in Harold’s Cross in the capital for just €290. But before you come running to the door with a deposit and your first month’s rent, you might want to read a little further!

The poster asked to meet any “broad-minded, smart, sexy, unconventional and adventurous dames” who would be willing to share a “double bedroom, their body and life experience.” Sounds dubious!

Of course if you’re not keen to take part in this renter’s “social experiment”, you can also choose to have a room all to yourself for €580 a month. Emm… no thanks!

The ad has since been taken down  (or maybe the perfect “dame” has already snapped the room up) but you can read the full text below…

We know it’s bad to say this, but good indie Irish films are few and far between. So when we heard about Trampoline, which was written and directed by Tom Ryan, and made on a budget of less than €1,000, our hopes weren’t too high.

But then we watched the trailer, and we were sold.

Trampoline tells the story of Angie who returns home to Tipperary once she finishes college, and gets a job as an English teacher in her old secondary school. Things don’t go as smoothly as she planned though (what does?) and she soon finds herself having to make some big life decisions – something we can all relate to.

It won Best Film awards in New York and Canada, and lead actor Aide Spratt also took home a Best Actress award in LA for her portrayal of Angie.

You won’t catch this film in your local cinema, but you CAN stream it from Seed and Spark for €2.99, or pre-order the DVD from trampolinemovie.com.

There are certain things about men that can only figured out after being with one for a considerable amount of time. To say that they’re an odd species would be a serious understatement. The phrase men are from Mars and women from Venus, only really sank in after about a year of being closely in contact with one on a regular basis. We deserve a medal, no joke.

1. Men Have Man Periods

FACT. Women get all the bad reputation for being moody and those moaning Michael’s get away scott free. It’s just not on really. Maybe it's sympathy cramps. How very kind of them.

2. Towels Apparently Dry Really Well On The Floor

Who needs a drying rack/clothes line when you have a floor, said every man ever.

3. Perfect Tea Makes The Perfect Man

If he can make you a great cup of tea then the rest can be taught along the way. If, however, he’s one of those sickos who puts the milk into the cup first then do yourself a favour and cut him loose now. Tea is no laughing matter, after all.

4. His Friends Bring Out His Idiot Side On A Whole New Level

One minute he’s all loving and sensitive and shit, the next he’s harping on about boobs with the lads and you don’t really know where to look. Simply whip out the last soppy message he sent you and the lads can join you in berating him for being a sellout. Winning.

5. Dominos Plus A Film Equals The Best Date Ever

At the start he tried to impress you by pulling out all the stops. Dinner in somewhere with actual place-mats, a great film, some inventive and interesting activities. Then he got you officially and considered pizza and tracksuit bottoms to be a big deal. Admit it though, you kind of like it.

6. Men Who Can Cook Are A Rare And Exotic Breed

If you have managed to land one of these, then hold on tight. Also, men who can actually cook like to do so all by themselves. Meaning we can sit back and get our latest tv fix. What’s not to like?

7. Conflict Is Sometimes The Only Way To Communicate

Men are sometimes so blind to their surroundings that you’d practically have to wipe your tears on him for him to realise that you’re upset. So failing that, a little shouting/door slamming is bound to get his attention.

8. Men Don’t Feel The Need To Share Plans

This is a very cleverly conducted plan about planning. It’s always because they’re planning something that they know is likely to infuriate you. For example: “I’m going out tonight with some girls from work”, said as he’s going out the door. Remain calm.

9. Football

This needs nothing more then that one word. Football has become the bane of my life. “Want to do something?” “Ok, once the match is over.” Ugh.

10. Being Farted On

It takes a little while to actually get to this stage but once you do, there’s no going back. Women apparently fart fairy dust and glitter. Men fart 75 times a day. Each with a growing sense of pride and worsening smell.

11. A Snoring Sleeper

You’re just drifting off to the land of slumber. Drifting, drifting, drift…Oh wait, he’s started to snore like a pig in heat and no matter how many times you hit him, he won’t shut up. The same goes for the twitchers, talkers and sleepwalkers.

12. Being Poked Awake

You’ve finally fallen asleep beside sow man himself, when, about one hour later (or so it feels), you’re woken up by what can only be described as a serious poke in the back. The morning glory is up and ready which means that you should be too, apparently. Swat it away.

13. They Never Really Stop Being Mammys Boys

You’ll never, ever be the number one woman in his life, not as long as his mother is around. She’s raised him, cared for him and loved him long before you ever came onto the scene, so the best thing you can do is try and get along with her.

14. Man Flu Is A Real Thing

Every girlfriend dreads hearing the words, “I don’t feel too good.” This generally means one thing, a serious and imminent onset of man flu. There is no known cure for man flu other than growing a pair and manning up. Preach.

15. Cover Control Is An Ongoing Battle

It’s battle of the fiercest out there. In bed. If you frequently wake up at the edge of the bed, cold and shivering beside your warm, starfishing slumber partner, than you my friend, have long since lost this battle.

So, before the VMAs aired, it was obvious things may be a bit tense between Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian following her failure to attend the Kimye circus. Sorry, wedding. We meant wedding.

However, Queen Bey wasn’t the only one Kim would rather avoid. It was also revealed that Rita Ora was sitting a mere two seats away from the reality TV star, something we knew would cause trouble.

Which, of course it did in recent news that has emerged.

Kim is said to blame Rita for a lot of her brother Rob’s issues after their relationship turned sour.

In order to avoid an awkward encounter, Kim asked for different seats for her and her two sisters, Kylie and Kendall.

It has been said that Kim was not looking for drama, she just simply wanted to avoid having to have an encounter with the singer.

We’re jealous of celebs for many reasons – all their money, mostly, but also their make-up. Here we have chosen out biggest celebrity inspirations for each part of the make-up routine. Their make-up are what we aspire to on a Saturday night!

First off – foundation:
It’s got to be Emma Stone. She really knows how to perfect that ‘I’m wearing foundation but I don’t look like I’m wearing foundation’ thing. She’s pale too, so her flawless finish is within reach for us Irish gals, which is always good. Her make-up artist says she uses Chanel’s Perfection Lumière Velvet foundation – so if you’re looking for a way to spend some of your hard earned cash, then there you have it!

Next – the contour
Well we couldn’t not choose Kim K, now could we? She’s almost as famous for her expert contouring as she is for that sex tape. She even showed fans how she managed it. It’s all about light and shade people. Light and shade.

Eye envy
So this SHEmazing! writer may have a slight obsession with P!nk, but she does rock some pretty cool eye make-up from time to time. Our teenage selves went through so much eyeliner trying to perfect this cat eye look. Now, we have resigned ourselves to the fact that we will always just end up looking like we’ve been punched in both eyes. Someday, maybe!

Lovely lips
Rita Ora really knows how to rock a red lip! Apparently she uses Diptique lip balm to keep her lips soft, lines them with MAC Red lip pencil, and then fills it all in with MAC Red Lipstick and MAC Lip Pigment in crimson.

Brow beauty
Not happy with nabbing Ryan Gosling all to herself, Eva Mendez is also the proud owner of the best eyebrows in tinsel town. Check out that arch! Now THERE is a girl who didn’t over pluck in high school!

This dad may the biggest source of his kid’s embarrassment for some time to come, but we love him!

In a bid to get his kids to actually listen to what he says, he decided to get at them through social media.

In what he describes as a series of instructional videos, this first one aims to teach his children how to change the toilet roll.

This is what sarcasm is all about, ladies and gentlemen.
