Yearly Archives: 2017

Joe Wicks, AKA The Body Coach, has made a stellar career out of helping people transform their appearance by achieving their health and fitness goals.

With a focus on exercise, nutrition and esteem-building, it's perhaps no surprise that the fitness coach regrets the reliance so many people have on plastic surgery.

The reason I stay lean all year round is because I am consistent in my actions and lifestyle choices Here are the things I do on a regular basis to stay in shape!1. I train 5 days per week, 2 Rest days 2. Short intense HIIT sessions (20-25 mins) on bike or treadmill 3. Or body weight stuff like pull ups, press ups, dips, burpees, sprints 4. I drink 2-4 litres of water each day 5. I get boozy about twice a month 6. I prep my own meals mainly having high fat & protein in 2 meals and one big high carb meal after I train 7. I usually train fasted and eat after 8. I eat out a couple of nights a week 9. I try to choose healthy options but do treat myself to a dessert or Ice cream or burger now & again 10. I have a proper big blow out day where I eat loads of sweets once a month and always feel exhausted afterwards which puts me off doing it more often 11. When I go on holiday I eat more food & treats but I still workout 12. I always try to get a good nights sleep (7 hours usually) 13. I keep doing all these things all year round

Speaking to the Sun on Sunday's Fabulous magazine, the 32-year-old lamented the beauty standards set by reality TV stars, with specific reference to the Kardashian / Jenner clan.

"You’ve got the Kardashians who completely remodel their faces and bodies and look attractive all of a sudden. Every girl in the world wants to look like Kylie Jenner and I don’t understand that. I just find it so unattractive," he revealed.

The best-selling author admitted he was disturbed by the dependency many young women in the spotlight appear to have on cosmetic augmentation.

"Lips, nose jobs and facelifts and they all end up looking the same, don’t they?” he asked before explaining that social media has helped open his eyes to the unattainable standards set.

"I sometimes look on Instagram at people I’ve followed and I don’t recognise them any more. It’s just sad," he said. "And there are girls in the UK on certain TV shows who are doing all the face stuff.”

Joe, who boasts a staggering 1.9 million followers on Instagram alone, insists that surgery is unnecessary for anyone who simply wants to feel their best, and adopting a healthy approach to food and exercise is the only way to go.

"Although health and wellness is a major contributing factor in the purchasing decision for many consumers in Ireland, the overriding trend for many consumers is indulgence."

If this statement bears a startlingly resemblance to your own nutritional choices, it would appear you are no different to the vast majority of your fellow countrymen.

According to recent figures issued by Euromonitor International, Irish people boast one hell of a sweet tooth and ultimately consume a staggering amount of chocolate per annum.

We are, in fact, the third biggest chocolate-eaters… in the world.

While Switzerland and Austria take first and second position respectively, Ireland's appreciation of the sweet stuff cannot be underestimated, with your average Irish person chomping on the equivalent of 155 Mars Bars a year.

Commenting on the trends evident in Ireland, the report makes reference to the disparity between an increased interest in health and wellbeing and the desire to treat yo'self.

"For example, a common phenomenon with consumers interested in health and wellness as well as sports nutrition diets is to have so-called 'cheat days' when they indulge in unhealthy snacks."

"Although Ireland is in the midst of an obesity epidemic, chocolate confectionery continued to grow, and consumers continued to be attracted by indulgence, which manufacturers sought to capitalise on in marketing material."

Sounds about right.

Acting on health and safety advice, officials in Llimerick have made the decision to cancel the events due to take place this evening as part of the city's New Year's Eve festivities.

With threats of severe weather and flooding due to the arrival of Storm Dylan, Limerick Council have confirmed that tonight's celebrations will not be going ahead as previously anticipated.

According to a recent report in The Journal, the erection of flood barriers along Clancy Strand, O’Callaghan Strand and the boardwalks will prevent the use of these sites for New Year's Eve-related events.

"Clancy Strand is the event site for the large scale projection mapping onto King John’s Castle and unfortunately due to the risk of flooding this area is not available for use by the event management company," the council explained.

Commenting on the decision which was made on Friday, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Service with Limerick City and County Council, Caroline Curley, said, that the move was not made lightly.

"It is with great regret that this decision has been taken, but in the interests of information from the event’s safety officer, the impact of the weather on the installation and rigging of the event and the safety of the tens of thousands of people expected to come out for the New Year’s Eve Extravaganza, it was decided to postpone the entire event."

Ms Curley did, however, confirm that the event will be incorporated into future festivities, adding: "The extravaganza will still take place at a later date, the event will now happen as part of Limerick’s St Patrick’s Festival 2018."

If there's one show we can quote in our sleep, it's Friends.

And yes, that may be because we were devoted fans during its ten-year run from 1994 to 2004, but it could also be due to the fact that the hugely popular show is rarely off our screens.

With re-runs aplenty on TV, it's perhaps no surprise that Netflix was met with a relatively subdued response when they hinted they were about about to add the series to their service.

Using the show's title template for their announcement, they tweeted: "The One with the Show Everyone's Been Asking Us to Add."

Unfortunately, it seems that those who have been doing the asking weren't actually online when the tweet appeared as the response was pretty damn lacklustre.

"I fricking LOVE Friends, BUT it is literally on UK TV every single day. There is absolutely no need for this monstrosity," wrote one.

"Friends is literally on several times a day every single day, nobody is missing it. The Office US however…." hinted another.

"It's on TV all day, every day. KEEP IT and give us every season of RuPaulsDragRace All Stars please," requested someone else.

Well, that went down well…

Following approximately 1,200 sexual attacks on women in Cologne at festive celebrations in 2015, organisers of a Berlin event have made the decision to introduce a 'safety zone' for women attending the city's public celebration.

The team behind the Brandenburg Gate party, which is scheduled to take place later tonight, have sought to remove the fear born of the Cologne events by creating a zone specifically for women who feel threatened, or have been the victim of an assault.

Members of the Red Cross will provide to support to women who make use of the designated zone, with spokeswoman of Berlin's main New Year's Eve celebrations, Anja Marx, explaining: "Assaulted women can stay here and calm down or speak to someone trained to offer psychological support."

The move has been the subject of debate, with the chairman of Germany's police union, Rainer Wendt, arguing that the establishment of a zone implies the existence of secure and insecure areas.

"Whoever came up with this idea did not understand its political dimension. It implies that there are zones of security as well as zones of insecurity,” he said, arguing that the zone implies that sexual violence is in some way a reality of life.

However, according to The Washington Post, others have praised its introduction and lauded those who sought to make sexual violence a 'public concern rather than a private problem'.

According to recent reports, Gardaí are currently investigating the discovery of eight dead horses at various sites on land in Clonmel, Co Tipperary.

Seven of the horses, which were found in various stages of decomposition, were discovered by members of the public shortly before Christmas while an eighth horse was found earlier this week.

As Gardaí and the Department of Agriculture investigate the matter, the registered owner of the land on which the horses were found has said that the carcasses were placed there without his permission.

According to The Irish Times, a further 14 horses were discovered alongside the dead animals.

It has been confirmed that the carcasses have been removed while the remaining herd have been transported to an Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) compound in Co Cork.

Action for Animal Welfare Ireland (AAWI) has asserted that it would be in a position to re-home the horses which have been transferred to the ISPCA compound.

Another day, another Kardashian / Jenner rumour.

With Kylie Jenner disappointing countless fans and followers by failing to confirm her reported pregnancy over Christmas, it seems social media users have turned their attention to her older sister, Kendall.

Following her decision to share a fairly low-key selfie on Instagram in recent days, Kendall has found herself the subject of intense speculation as Instagrammers debate the existence of a baby bump.

No, seriously.

Focussing on Kendall's midriff, fans of the 22-year-old suggested that she may follow in her older sister Khloe's footsteps by becoming the latest member of the reality TV family to announce a pregnancy.

And Kendall isn't having it.

Taking to Twitter to dismiss the rumours, Kendall insisted that the speculation surrounding her frankly non-existent tum was born of a food baby, writing: "I just like bagels OK!"

The tweet, which has amassed more than 130,000 likes, was inundated with responses from fans praising the speed with which Kendall responded to the speculation.

"It’s like they’ve never heard of a “food baby”. People need to calm down," wrote one.

"If you’re pregnant than I’m having twins…." added another.

We're with them on that.

Following the publication of the HSE's weekly influenza report, it has been confirmed that a number of people in Ireland have lost their lives due to a particular strain of flu known as 'Aussie flu'.

The report confirms that influenza accounted for 73 hospitalisations this month: 19 of which occurred in the week ending December 17.

Commenting on the recently released data, Dr Kevin Kelleher of the HSE explained that anonymity prevents him from releasing the exact number of fatalities.

"There have been a few deaths already… under 10 people have died so far this year," he said. "I don't give specific numbers when it's less than 10 because people could be identified."

Elaborating on figures where possible, Dr Kelleher added: "There are deaths every year that happen directly as a result of the flu, which account for about 18 to 20 fatalities. On average, there are about 400 to 600 deaths a year which are associated with the flu indirectly."

The HSE has urged those in the 'high risk' demographic to avail of the vaccination, while Dr Kelleher assures the public that many cases of flu can be treated at home.

"The most important thing is that if people think they've got it is to stay at home and look after themselves. The vast majority of people – 99pc of cases – can look after themselves at home," he said.

As the conversation around gender stereotypes continues to heat up, more and more people are refusing to let their children be controlled by gender norms.

After all, it's (almost) 2018.

Many celebrities have shown their support for the breakdown of stereotypes with Adele often seen allowing her son to wear princess dresses while Paloma Faith indicated she would raise her children gender neutral.

And now, Sarah Michelle Gellar has joined the conversation, proving she sees no problem with enjoying traditionally 'girly' activities with her five-year-old son.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star took to social media this week to share sweet snaps of her and her son getting matching manicures.

The 40-year-old mother-of-two, uploaded an Instagram story showing her son, Rocky, on his salon journey.

Fans took to the comments to praise the star for her parenting skills.

One user wrote:

“I literally would have killed for this as a child.”

Another added: “Sarah Michelle Gellar lets her son get his nails painted. If she isn’t mom goals, and an example of good parenting… Then, I don’t know what is.”

They both look fab, don't you think?

Having grown up as the star of her very own self-titled Nickelodeon show, Amanda Bynes is no stranger to the spotlight.

Her successful television career opened doors to the movie industry with the actress starring in a number of teen rom-coms in the early 2000's including She's the Man and Easy A

Now 31, the star's acting career was put on hold in 2010 after her return to education was followed by a string of mental health issues.

But now the actress is reportedly back in a good place and is even planning to return to the screen (big or small) in 2018.

In a statement released to Page Six, Amanda's lawyer said: “Amanda is looking forward to ringing in the new year with her close friends this year. In 2018, she looks forward to completing fashion school and dipping her toe back into acting. She has had several offers but is waiting for the right one to come along for a comeback.”

This isn't the first time Amanda has hinted at a return to acting. Earlier this year, the star gave her first interview in over four years and revealed her desire to get back in the game.

"I do miss acting, and I have something surprising to tell you: I want to do TV," she said.

"Maybe a few guest spots on some shows that I'm a fan of and maybe another TV show where I'm the star of it, in the future. That's what I hope."

The Amanda Show 2.0, anyone?
