Australia is set to vote in November on whether or not to allow members of the LGBTQ community the right to same-sex marriage.

The Government is preparing to hold a postal vote to assess the opinion of the Australian public on the issue.

Voting in the postal method would be non-compulsory.

Parliamentary support for a compulsory national ballot will be attempted, but if it fails as is expected, then the postal method will be utilised.

It is not expected that the government will win support for a compulsory ballot.

In that case, the postal voting ballots will start being received by voters in September, with the count being held on November 25.

'My prediction, and it's only a prediction, is that in the plebiscite, which ever of the two forms it take, more people will vote yes than no,' Australian Attorney-General George Brandis told Australia's ABC

5 things to consider before wedding dress shopping

The ring is important, and you will wear it forever, but the dress — that’s what really makes a bride feel amazing on her big day.

Finding your dream gown can be stressful. Most likely you have never even tried one on before, and it’s the most expensive garment many women will ever own, so it can seem like a lot of pressure. Your dress sets the tone for the wedding, whether you decide on a designer ball gown or a casual beach flowy dress. These days, more brides are doing multiple dresses, a more formal one for the ceremony and a party-centric one for the reception, which can double the task of shopping.

Do research

Start by looking at dresses online and in bridal magazines to get a sense of the styles you’re drawn to. Look for a connecting theme — are they all very embellished? Lacy? Voluminous? Have open backs? Find a couple of commonalities of styles you like and bring your ideas to your first appointment. Do a good bit of online looking before you shop. Are there certain designers you keep going back to? Follow them on social media and you’ll find out about more styles and sales that way.

Make an appointment

Once you have an idea of what you want, it’s time to schedule appointments in bridal shops, and, if it fits your budget, a couture house. If you’re looking at high end wedding dresses, find out which stores carry them. Most places require an appointment, so call ahead at least two weeks in advance.

Budget

The average price of a wedding dress in the United States is just over $1,200, though the final cost depends heavily on the geographical areas. What if you simply don’t have the money to spend a fortune on a dress you’ll wear only once? You have a few options, buy second hand, rent a dress, wear a non-traditional dress, go simple or even borrow a dress.

Be open-minded

Fact. Some dresses look hideous on the hanger and gorgeous on your body. With that in mind, don’t turn your nose up at anything until you try it on. Even if you’ve always envisioned a ball gown, don’t be afraid of the A-line or fit and flare that was pulled for you. It’s the consultant’s job to match you with styles you’ll like, so give her the benefit of the doubt and prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

Limit who you bring along with you

Bringing a big group to the boutique is a wedding dress shopping don’t. Bring one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. It’s important to only bring someone whose opinion you truly respect and want. This way you can find the gown that best suits you and your style and not feels pressured by too many opinions.

The Irish rental crisis is ongoing, and criminals are taking advantage of the crisis to make some quick cash from desperate, hopeful renters.

Gardaí are advising people to be wary of rental scams, particularly at this time of year when students are returning to college.

Scams occur throughout the year, but there is a significant spike at this time of year as first time renters seek university accommodation.

The scams identified by Gardaí fall into three categories. In the first, the scammer claims to be out of the country and can’t show you the property, but still requests a deposit.

The second is when the scammer is living at the property and shows a number of people around, gets a deposit from several people and disappears with the money.

The third involves everything looking fine and dandy, until the renter finds that the keys don’t work and the landlord has disappeared.

According to Gardaí, there are a number of steps renters can take to avoid being burnt by these scams.

1. Ideally only do business with established bon-fide rental agencies.

2. Always meet a prospective landlord in the accommodation to be rented.

3. Ask for identification, a driver’s licence or Photo identification of landlord or letting agent. etc. (Take a photo of the document on your phone)

4. Pay the deposit to the Landlord and not the persons leaving the property/ courier other person.

5. Use cheques or bank drafts to pay the deposit and keep copies of receipts of payments and any correspondence.

6. Ensure keys fit, open door lock and sign rental contract, prior to payment of deposit.

According to Gardaí, people need to establish that the house exists and that is available for rent and the identity of landlord.

It's also important that the renter establishes that the agent, where applicable, is reputable, and that the person renting the property is authorised to rent the property.

Google bosses have fired a male engineer after he wrote an internal memo claiming there are biological causes behind gender inequality in the tech industry.

The document, which has been at the centre of a debate in Silicon Valley this week, blasted the web company's diversity policies and its politically correct corporate culture.

James Damore, the engineer behind the memo confirmed his dismissal yesterday, telling Reuters that he had been let go for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.”

He added that he would explore all his legal options and even revealed that prior to his dismissal, he had submitted a charge to the US National Labour Relations Board accusing Google of trying to shame him into silence.

"It's illegal to retaliate against an NLRB charge," he said.

It's not clear what legal actions, if any, Mr Damore could take, but Google have remained strong in their claim that portions of the memo "violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace."

This sentiment was then echoced by Google's vice president of diversity, Danielle Brown, who sent a memo in response to the situation, saying the engineer's comments  "advanced incorrect assumptions about gender".

Hands up who loves long fluttery lashes?

You’re not alone, and in an age of strip lashes and semi – permanent extensions, achieving full flirty lashes is easier than ever.

However, continually subjecting your lids to glue and fake lashes may not be the best way – not only can the application of fake lashes on a regular basis sometimes cause your natural lashes to thin, the glue and prosthetic lashes can also lead to bacteria build up.

Thankfully, there's no need to despair just yet, as natural, healthy, luscious lashes can still be yours with our top tips:

Comb Your Lashes

Believe it or not, taking the time to comb through your lashes daily can help stimulate growth. It helps to rid your lashes of particles, dirt, pollen and dust, and it also spreads your natural lash oils through the hair, softening them.

This can encourage your lashes to grow longer before being shed, with the overall result being thicker lashes.

Coconut Oil

If you’re a beauty blog addict, you already know that coconut oil seems to be a magical remedy for almost anything, so it should come as no surprise that it can be a great lash asset as well.

The oil itself makes lashes softer and more resilient to shedding, and the natural vitamins and nutrients in it can encourage healthy growth. You can melt a little between your index finger and thumb and coat your lashes with a cotton ball or clean mascara wand.

Eyelid Massage

Blood flow is vital to healthy lash growth and a massage is a great way to encourage it. Gently massaging your eyelids and lashes once or twice on a daily basis for five to ten minutes can lead to healthier, stronger lashes. Feel free to combine this with your coconut oil application!

Lemon Peel Infusion

Lemon peels are loaded with vitamin C, vitamin B and folic acid—all of which are critical elements to thicker, healthier hair growth.

Of course, putting lemon peels on your eyes probably isn’t a good idea. However, you can create a lemon peel infusion by soaking lemon peels in olive oil for several days. Apply up to one drop of the infused oil nightly before bedtime.

Eyelash Serum

The easiest and safest way to encourage thicker lashes, however, is an eyelash serum.

IMAGE Skincare have the most amazing serum, that will promote lash and brow growth (yes please)! I BEAUTY Lash and Brow Enhancement Serum promotes the  growth and life span of thin and short eye brows and lashes while helping to prevent breakage and further hair loss making your lashes look great while providing the benefits of all of the above tips, safely and conveniently!

Prepare to be terrified and confused in equal parts because the first trailer for Jennifer Lawrence's new horror film Mother! has landed – and it's creep AF.

The cryptic trailer has left fans with a lot of questions, however it did reveal that Jennifer's character appears obsessed with a brick wall (which at one point is dripping with blood), after allowing a strange man sleep in the house she shares with her partner, played by Javier Bardem.

The short clip also suggests that Javier Bardem's character may know more about the visitors than we originally thought, saying “all I'm trying to do is bring life into this house. Open the door to new people, new ideas.”

Also starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Kristen Wiig and Ed Harris, this star-studded horror flick looks set to be a box office smash.

Darren Aronofsky's Mother! is set to hit Irish cinemas on September 15.

Irish people first fell in love with the ferociously talented Ruth Negga back in 2010 when she appeared as Rosie in RTÉ's hit crime drama, Love/Hate.

Since then, the Ethiopian born, Limerick-raised actress has been busy making quite the name for herself in Hollywood.

After a handful of movie roles and a stint on ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Ruth struck gold last year with her Oscar-nominated performance in the critically acclaimed Loving.

Following the film's success, movie fans around the world began to fall for the 35-year-old's Irish charm, and now it looks like she has cemented her status as a bona fide Hollywood starlet.

It's been reported that Ruth will star alongside Brad Pitt in the upcoming sci-fi adventure flick, Ad Astra.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script follows a man who journeys across a lawless solar system in search of his missing father, a renegade scientist who poses a threat to all mankind.

It is not yet known what role the Irish-Ethiopian actress will have in the film, though reports have suggested that Tommy Lee Jones is also attached to the project.

Either way, we're beyond excited!

Sinead O'Connor has shared a heart-felt video discussing her struggle with mental illness.

Fans have raised their concerns after the singer revealed she is feeling suicidal and is currently living alone in a Travelodge in New Jersey.

The Irish songstress began the 12-minute video, which she shared on Facebook, by saying: “I hope that this video is somehow helpful.”

“Not actually to me, but the fact that I know I'm only one of million and millions and millions of people in the world that are just like me, actually, that don't have necessarily the resources that I have in my heart or in my purse, for that matter.”

Sinead went on to reveal that she has been on her own “for two years” after leaving her family in Ireland “because they didn't care.”

“I’m all by myself. And there’s absolutely nobody in my life except my doctor, my psychiatrist – the sweetest man on earth, who says I’m his hero – and that’s about the only fucking thing keeping me alive at the moment, the fact that I’m his bloody hero… and that’s kind of pathetic.”

She continued: "Mental illness, it’s a bit like drugs, it doesn’t give a sh*t who you are. And you know what’s worse? The stigma doesn’t give a sh*t who you are."

The 50-year-old went onto explain how she suffers from three mental illnesses and spoke of her hope that her family would come take her home.

In a heart-breaking cry for help, she asked, “am I not worth fighting for?”

Fans of the star took to the comment section with words of encouragement and concern.

One wrote: “Dearest Sinead I just want to wrap my arms around you so you feel secure, cry with you because the pain needs to be released, laugh with you as laughter is so healing, to listen.”

Since then, a statement was posted to Sinead's official Facebook page assuring fans that she is is "surrounded by love and receiving the best of care."

Two men, believed to be on their way to carry out a gang-related shooting were have arrested by Gardaí in Dublin last night.

The men were in possession of a loaded fire arm and a can of petrol when the van they were travelling in was stopped by armed officers on the Kylemore Road in Ballyfermot between 7.30pm and 8pm yesterday evening in what is understood to have been an intelligence-led operation.

The suspects, aged 34 and 38, are being detained at Crumlin Garda Station on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, where they can be questioned for up to one week.

It's understood that the foiled shooting was not feud related, but rather part of what Gardaí describe as the regular internal operations of an organised crime gang.
