Monthly Archives: August 2017

We're suckers for a bit of nostalgia here at SHEmazing HQ, and nowhere is this more evident than when we cast our minds back over the charts of the last decade.

After realising that Paramore's Riot! was released a full ten years ago, we started reminiscing over the tracks that captured our hearts and minds in that same year.

And as it is August 1, we thought it appropriate to focus our attention on the songs that dominated the national and international charts this same month ten years ago.

With Rihanna finally relinquishing the top spot after Umbrella spent weeks at Number One, these five tracks promptly took its place.

Prepare to feel old, ladies.

Ireland

The Way I Are: Timbland feat Keri Hilson & D.O.E Sebastian.

You'd have been hardpressed to make it through a day in Ireland this month ten years ago without hearing this track at least five times.

UK

With Every Heartbeat: Robyn with Kleerup

The Swedish songstress earned her first UK Number One wth this corker.

Stronger: Kanye West

Still one of our favourites tracks Yeezy has ever released.

USA

Hey There Delilah: Plain White T's

Potentially one of the most overplayed songs of that summer, to be fair.

Beautiful Girls: Sean Kingston

You either loved it or hated it, ladies.

Now, go lament your lost youth, ladies.

Wearing high heels to work should never be a prerequisite. We'll keep our work uniform of boots and a breton top, thank you very much.

However for some women, the inclusion of high heels in their work dress code is a reality.

Obviously, this makes daily blisters, aching arches and strained calves a regular part of working life.

Calls were made to the UK government back in April to ban the requirement from women's work contracts, but these were rejected.

One woman who was sent home from work for wearing flat shoes started a petition to have the requirement disbanded, sparking global media attention.

In 2011, Theresa May even said: 'I have not found that traditional gender-based workplace dress codes have held me back.'

'I indeed believe that they encourage a sense of professionalism in the workplace.'

The University of Aberdeen has conducted further research into the area, and found that there is a risk of injury attached to the persistent wearing of heels.

The review found that wearing high heels led to an increased risk of bunions, pain and injury.

It failed to find a link between high heel wear and osteoarthritis.

'From our review it is clear that despite the huge amount of evidence showing heels are bad for individuals’ health, there are complex social and cultural reasons that make high heel wearing attractive,' said lead researcher Dr Max Barnish, according to Breaking News.

“We feel the UK Government should follow the lead of other authorities who have introduced specific laws to tackle this practice rather than simply relying on existing legislation which has left the situation in this country uncertain and open to misinterpretation.'

We'll be keeping our runners firmly on our feet, thanks.

According to a recent study, being able to speak a language other than your native tongue provides you with more than just a key to another culture or country, but also effects your perception of time.

No, seriously.

A study, which investigated the theory that bilingual people have a more flexible understanding of time, established that this may, indeed, be the case as time is described with varying degrees of rigidity across languages.

The research, which was conducted by the University of Stockholm and the University of Lancaster, focussed on Spanish-Swedish bilinguals; 40 of whom were native Spanish speakers and 40 of whom were native Swedish speakers.

So, how did researchers go about testing the hypothesis?

Well, participants were shown a computer screen which featured a growing line alongside a video which featured a container filling with water, and asked to measure the duration of the process.

As Swedish uses 'distance' to imply time, such as a 'long' or 'short', and Spanish uses volume such as 'big' or 'small', the participants answered accordingly.

Interestingly, however, bilinguals were able to switch neatly between the two measurements leading researchers to conclude that their perception of time is much more flexible than a monolingual's.

Commenting on the findings, co-Author Panos Athansopoulos said: "By learning a new language, you suddenly become attuned to perceptual dimensions that you weren’t aware of before."

"The fact that bilinguals go between these different ways of estimating time effortlessly and unconsciously fits in with a growing body of evidence demonstrating the ease with which language can creep into our most basic senses, including our emotions, our visual perception, and now it turns out, our sense of time."

The study has been published in the Journal of Experiment Psychology: General

You could probably mark time by the consistency of new iPhone releases, with new models appearing every Autumn.

The iPhone 8 is currently under construction, and a release of data has revealed a very interesting potential feature on the new model.

A tech leak about Apple's Home Pod speaker revealed more than it should have.

The softwear code contained information about other Apple products, the iPhone 8 being one of them.

The sequences of code showed that Apple are developing face detecting technology for unlocking iPhones.

Our minds were blown when they brought in finger print recognition technology, and now all you'll need is your very own visage to open up your iPhone.

Rumour has it that the facial recognition softwear could replace the Touch ID function, or work alongside it.

The face detection is said to use infared technology, meaning that faces will be detectable even in low luighting.

We are truly living in the future, people.

As social media users fell upon Kevin Myers' recent column in horror, and wasted no time dubbing the journalist both 'misogynistic' and 'anti-Semitic', the Jewish council in Ireland have come to the defence of the former Sunday Times columnist.

In a statement, the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland acknowledged Myers' 'error of judgement', but insisted that the headlines which have circulating in the wake of his recent column have been wholly misleading.

"More than any other Irish journalist he has written columns about details of the Holocaust over the last three decades that would not otherwise have been known by a substantial Irish audience," the statement read.

"The knee-jerk responses from those outside Ireland appear to care little for facts and pass on (along with some media outlets) falsehoods about his previous writings without verification."

"This has been exacerbated by a thoroughly misleading headline being sent around the world that is wholly unrepresentative of the article to which it refers."

While acknowledging the press and public's reaction to the recent article, the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland expressed concern over the aspersions which have been cast over his previous articles.

"It is understandable that there is a strong response to, and rejection of, Kevin Myers’ article but it is wrong that misconceptions and misinformation be circulated about his previous writings," they opined.

"Kevin Myers inadvertently stumbled into an anti-Semitic trope. Yes, Kevin ought to have known that his bringing the religion of the two BBC presenters into his writings on Sunday would cause concern and upset and that it was both unnecessary and bound to be misunderstood."

As articles, columns and social media postings devote time to dissecting Myers' recent remarks, the Council are keen to debunk the idea that Myers is innately anti-Semitic.

"But the larger picture is that Kevin, who up until now was a respected columnist, has a particular curmudgeonly, cranky, idiosyncratic style."

"We, who have been reading Kevin’s work over many years and those who know him personally, know that while this was a real error of judgement on his part, also know that he is not an anti-Semite."

Last week, The Sunday Independent revealed that RTÉ news presenter Sharon Ní Bheoláin earns €60,000 – €80,000 less than her male co-anchor Bryan Dobson.

This led to a major debate about the gender pay gap in Ireland.

Now, former news anchor Anne Doyle, who has 33 years in the industry under her belt, has offered her thoughts on the subject.

'Like any right-minded person, I believe in equal pay for equal work,' she told The Irish Independent.

"I think if anyone is being short-changed then they are quite right to make their views very plain. I think 'fair play'."

'People have a point to make and now is the time to make it.'

"My dim memory of my career is that I had a pretty damn good idea what people were being paid,' she said, expressing that during her time at RTÉ, she wasn't under the impression that she was being 'short-changed.'

"To the best of my knowledge, I never had the experience of sitting beside a person who was doing the same job and getting paid more.'

"Had that been the case I would have been very cross indeed.'

RTÉ confirmed last week that a review of role and gender equality across the organisation will take place, and that details of the review will be announced 'soon.'

Getting a rickshaw to your beloved post-Coppers three-in-one is part and parcel of a night out.

However, Dublin City Council recently released a warning regarding the safety of these man-powered vehicles.

The rickshaws are vastly unregulated, and generally uninsured.

New laws to protect service users and providers are to be prepared by Government to regulate the rickshaw industry.

The National Transport Authority has launched a public consultation on these potential regulations.

The public survey wants to hear the views of rickshaw passengers and drivers.

“Earlier this year, Minister for Transport Shane Ross asked the NTA to seek the views of the public and key stakeholders in relation to the operation of rickshaws in Ireland,' said NTA Deputy CEO Hugh Creegan.

“The regulation of rickshaws has been a matter of public interest for some time now and the information we gather in this process will bring some clarity to bear on how the relationship with regulatory authorities will be defined into the future.

“We would encourage anybody who has an interest in the area to share their views so that we can work towards the most appropriate regulatory regime.”

You can find further information about the survey here.
