Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan has defended his comments on the morning after pill which he made last week.

The TD faced criticism for his remark, which was made at a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee discussing the Eighth Amendment.

When discussing the morning after pill, Mr Durkan said:

'With regard to rape and incest, presumably rape is reported on the day or the day after and there is particular treatment fairly readily available.'

This led to mass criticism, as many people felt that Mr Durkan was uneducated on the topic of sexual assault, as victims often feel unable to come forward straight away (or ever) to report being raped for various reasons.

According to The Irish Independent, Mr Durkan last night stood by his remarks.

'He said he knows that many rape victims don't report their experience immediately and insisted he wasn't suggesting the morning-after pill was the solution,' according to The Irish Independent.

He reportedly said that it was his job as a committee member to ask questions that he felt the public may not know, and that this comment was not reflective of his own thoughts on the matter.

Most of us have a morning routine.

Some involve a mini heart attack, a frantic search for keys and a mad dash for the door.

Others include an invigorating shower, a leisurely breakfast and a brisk stroll to the Luas.

No matter which camp you fall into, a recent survey suggests you’d certainly be in the minority if your morning routine includes taking a folic acid tablet.

According to research conducted by safefood, 80 per cent of women check their social media as part of their routine while just 25 per cent include folic acid in theirs.

Commenting on the study’s findings, Dr Marian O’Reilly Chief Specialist in Nutrition with safefood said she was pleased by women’s focus on healthy breakfasts and regular dental hygiene, but stressed the importance of including folic acid in the morning routine.

“It’s great to see that over 70 per cent of Irish women report starting their day with a healthy breakfast and 95 per cent brush their teeth every morning. What we want women to do is to take on a new healthy habit – take a daily 400 microgram folic acid supplement – it’s even easier than brushing your teeth and takes only seconds to do.”

“Folic acid prevents most neural tube defects like spina bifida in the first few weeks of pregnancy at a time when most women are unaware they’re pregnant. With 50 per cent of all pregnancies unplanned, taking folic every morning gets you into a healthy habit, even if a baby is the last thing on your mind.”

Urging women to consider including the element in their daily routine, Dr. Aileen McGloin, Communications Manager, Digital and Health at safefood, said: “Almost half the women in our survey said the best way to create a new healthy habit is to be prepared.”

“With folic acid, keep it near your toothbrush, beside your bed or somewhere that will remind you to take it as part of your morning routine,“ she added. “Setting a reminder on your phone or committing to a new habit were also mentioned by women as successful ways to create a new habit.”

This Saturday, thousands of women will march from the Garden of Remembrance to Dáil Éireann in this year's March for Choice.

Many of them will be donning their Repeal jumpers with pride to utilise their outerwear as a form of political statement.

Repeal jumpers have been off the market for a number of months, but the demand for them continues (so much so, that a number of months ago, SHEmazing uncovered a black market producing fake jumpers).

A post shared by Repeal Project (@repealproject) on

Aside from a Repeal pop-up in Nine Crows last December, the jumpers have been notoriously tricky to get ahold of since last summer.

Now, the Repeal Project have announced that on the morning of the march, a limited number of the now iconic black slogan jumper's will be available.

The proceeds from the sales go to The Abortion Rights Campaign Ireland, making them the ideal way to both visually and financially show your support for the cause.

The pop-up will be held at Indigo & Cloth, where the jumpers were originally sold.

They will also be selling Repeal necklaces at the pop-up.

According to an Instagram post, the Repeal Project will completely relaunch this October.

The Cabinet will meet today to discuss the possibility of holding up to eight referendums over the next 18 months.

RTÉ reports that a number of potential referendums will be considered today, with the aim for them to be called by the summer of 2019.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will present the potential referendums to the cabinet.

These include a referendum on the Eighth Amendment, which has been heavily called for by the public over the last 12 months

This referendum may be held as soon as next May or June, according to RTÉ.

These referendums could also include polls on whether to reduce the voting age to 16.

With so many referendums on the horizon, now would be the time to register to vote, if you haven't already.

Yesterday, North Korea's foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho claimed that the USA had declared war on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

'Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make all self-defensive counter measures, including the right to shoot down the United States strategic bombers at any time even when they are not yet inside the aerospace border of our country' he said at a New York press conference.

The USA have responded to these statements this morning.

'We've not declared war on North Korea,' White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told RTÉ

'Frankly, the suggestion of that is absurd.'

A pentagon spokesperson said that the US military 'will take all options to make sure that we safeguard our allies and our partners and our homeland so if North Korea does not stop their provocative actions we'll make sure we provide options to the President to deal with North Korea," according to CNN.

Speaking at a UN General Assembly last week, POTUS Donald Trump said: 'We will have no choice than to totally destroy North Korea.'

Reports of the rumoured pregnancy first broke on Friday when a source told TMZ that Kylie Jenner and boyfriend, Travis Scott had shared the news with friends and family.

And while the makeup mogul is yet to comment on the speculation, sources close to the Kardashian/ Jenner clan have spoken out.

It comes after some reports claimed Caitlyn was left “shocked and disappointed” after learning of the news online.

"Caitlyn was really shocked and disappointed to learn that Kylie is pregnant," a source close to Caitlyn told Hollywood Life.

"She thinks Kylie is way too young to have a baby, and that she should have waited until she was in a long term committed relationship.

Nowadays you're as likely to see a group of young women deadlifting serious weights on the gym floor as you would a group of young men, but there's no denying that that hasn't always been the case.

As recently as a decade ago, phrases like 'size zero trend' were commonplace among the press and public as society focussed its attention on the waif-life appearance of high-profile individuals.

Thankfully, the passing of time has seen a change in both the perception and approach to health and wellbeing.

One quick scroll through any social media feed will throw up countless hashtags including #GirlsWhoLift, #StrongNotSkinny and #GirlsWithMuscle – labels which all highlight the popularity of weightlifting among the female population.

And yet despite the focus on fitness, strength and health among many Instagrammers, there exists a narrative that suggests women should not dedicate themselves to a routine based on weightlifting.

And Kelsey Wells isn't having it.

The fitness blogger, who boasts more than 847,000 followers, took to Instagram this week to tackle the negative dialogue which surrounds women who weightlift.

Sharing a photo of herself in three different aspects of her life, the mother-of-one encouraged other female weightlifters to ignore the criticism.

Comments along the lines of "you're looking manly" or "careful you don't want to be bulky" or "weightlifting isn't feminine" never cease to amaze me I choose not to respond to negativity, but I do have something to say about this and I want to say it loud and clear. NOT in response to those who have left negative messages and comments, but instead to ALL MY FELLOW WOMEN who have ever received a similar comment or been told they need to do/be something different to be beautiful or feminine. THE ONLY THING A WOMAN NEEDS TO DO TO BE BEAUTIFUL AND FEMININE IS TO BE HERSELF. We empower ourselves when we are living our truth and doing what we are PASSIONATE about with our WHOLE HEARTS. I was always a girly girl growing up and I love getting dressed up on occasion. What has surprised me though is finding I feel most beautiful when I'm gross and sweaty in the gym when I'm pushing myself in my training, and even more so as I'm wrestling on the floor with my son or any time I'm looking into that little face and teaching him about his world. . There is 100% beauty and femininity in lifting weights. Just as there is in dancing. There is beauty in MOTHERHOOD. There is beauty in marriage. There is beauty in being a homemaker. There is beauty in being single. There is beauty in pursuing a career. There is beauty in education, in learning both inside and outside of school. There is beauty in public speaking. There is beauty in private, sincere conversation. There is beauty in writing and cooking and cleaning and singing and playing sports and playing instruments and anything and everything else you might enjoy, because simply there is SO MUCH BEAUTY in YOU, you just need to choose to see it. And it has nothing to do with what you look like. So free yourself of the opinions of others and the beauty standards of society. Pay attention to the moments in life you FEEL beautiful. Day to day along my journey it seemed nothing was different, yet looking back at myself three years later I realize EVERYTHING has changed. Not through drastic breakthroughs, but rather small consistent efforts and a lot of hard work. Yes, physically I am stronger. But the reason I have stuck with it through the years and will never stop is because fitness has helped me FEEL strong. Learning how to nourish my body and consistently exercise and train efficiently has completely changed my body composition. In the same vein, learning how to work hard and push through challenges and embrace self-belief has completely changed my mentality and self-perception. Caring for myself physically empowers me mentally and emotionally. "I follow you because your strength is a beauty that I hope to have someday! And not just your physical strength but your mental strength as well. LIFT ON SISTA!" added another.
