Yearly Archives: 2017

2017 is the year that Hollywood was rocked by the exposure of sexual predators within the industry.

TV buffs and movie fans were left devastated to discover that the production of their favourite TV shows or movies was the scene of so many allegations of rape, sexual assault and inappropriate behaviour.

Now, there is a nifty online tool which tells entertainment fans whether the movie they're about to watch was marred by a sex scandals.

Rotten Apples is a simple, easy to use tool which exposes the predators employed to work on various TV shows and films.

The tool divides the into two categories, fresh apples and rotten apples.

This makes boycotting projects where sexual assault happened as easy as (apple) pie.

A search for Kill Bill  reveals the names Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

Search for Gossip Girl and Ed Westwick's name is right there.

Look up Blue Planet and the blurb reads: 'This TV show has no known affiliation to anyone with allegations of sexual misconduct against them.' Phew.

Meyl Streep has responded to Rose McGowen's criticism of her perceived defence of Harvey Weinstein.

'Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem,' Rose tweeted, before deleting the tweet.

'You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance. I despise your hypocrisy.'

Rose is one of many women who allege that Weinstein raped her in the 90s.

'It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others,' Meryl told The Huffington Post.

'I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know.'

'I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.'

'HW was not a filmmaker; he was often a producer, primarily a marketer of films made by other people- some of them great, some not great.'

'But not every actor, actress, and director who made films that HW distributed knew he abused women, or that he raped Rose in the 90s, other women before and others after, until they told us.'

'We did not know that women’s silence was purchased by him and his enablers.'

We all learned about Newgrange in history class (and a few of us had to draw it a million times for art) but how many of us have actually been lucky enough to witness the phenomenon itself on Winter Solstice?

During this special time of the year, sunlight floods the inner chamber of the passage tomb in Meath, illuminating the manmade cavern.

The Neolithic structure is an architectural an historic marvel, and now everyone with an internet connection will be able to witness the big event.

A post shared by Matthew Barnette (@pungeon_master) on

This year's winter solstice will be streamed live at 8.30am tomorrow and Thursday.

'This year, you too can feel the excitement as people gather at this world heritage site,' reads Ireland's Ancient East

'Experience the wonder, as out of the morning’s darkness a single ray of light illuminates the passage tomb on the shortest day of the year, marking the end of winter and the start of new life.'

'A few moments of magic…5,000 years in the making!'

History buffs, it's time to get the popcorn ready.

The pregnancy comes as a real shock, considering that the couple never disclosed that the 36-year-old former tennis pro was pregnant.

The Simon Community, a housing and homeless charity, saw a 33 percent rise in the number of people using its services.

The charity helps those who are homeless in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, and Meath.

According to their Annual Report for 2016, this increase includes more than 11,000 people total, who were either homeless or at risk of losing the roof over their heads.

Simon helped 1,400 families and nearly 3,000 children last year as well.

The number of families facing homelessness has soared by over 50 percent and the number of homeless children by 49 percent.

Many of these families must live in hotel rooms, with limited space for children to play and no proper kitchen to cook in.

"These trends are flesh and blood, people’s lives and childhoods potentially lost," Padraig McKeon, Chairperson of Simon Community, said in a statement.

He also noted that the charity plans on building 400 more accommodation units in the four counties they serve, which will be both supported housing and independent living units.

Padraig thanked all of the charity's clients and residents whose 'continued determination and perseverance to move forward with their lives' are utterly inspiring.

"Every day we are inspired by what you have overcome," the Chairperson wrote, "Your experience and insights ensure our services continue to adapt and improve."

Matt Damon is facing criticism over comments he made regarding the recent sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood.

Taking your typical ‘not all men’ style stance, the actor shared that he felt that there will be men who will be unaffected by the #MeToo movement.

He seems to believe that the men who do not sexually assault women should be praised and discussed.

‘We're in this watershed moment, and it's great, but I think one thing that's not being talked about is there are a whole s–tload of guys—the preponderance of men I've worked with—who don't do this kind of thing and whose lives aren't going to be affected,’ he shared with Business Insider.

‘If I have to sign a sexual-harassment thing, I don't care, I'll sign it.’

‘I would have signed it before. I don't do that, and most of the people I know don't do that.’

We’re not sure about you Matt, but we think that not sexually harassing women is far from an accolade, more like a hallmark of a society that’s safe for women?

The actor also told ABC News that certain behaviours are not as bad as others.

'There's a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right?' he said.

'Both of those behaviours need to be confronted and eradicated, without question, but they shouldn't be conflated, right?'

Today, Ryanair will meet with a workers union in a move that is historic for the company.

Today marks the first-ever meeting with a union since the airline was founded over three decades ago.

Ryanair staff have planned strike action for tomorrow, December 20.

Passengers may still face disruption despite the budget airlines meeting today.

Pilots have temporarily suspended their strike plans to allow for talks.

However, they reserved the right to resume their plans based on today’s talks.

Up to 117 members of the Irish Airline Pilots’ Association planned to strike.

'Christmas flights are very important to our customers and we wish to remove any worry or concern that they may be disrupted by pilot industrial action next week,' said Michael O'Leary previously.

'If the best way to achieve this is to talk to our pilots through a recognised union process, then we are prepared to do so, and we have written today to these unions inviting them to talks to recognise them and calling on them to cancel the threatened industrial action planned for Christmas week.'

For the last few month, rumours have circulated that Khloe Kardashian is pregnant with her first child, and with no confirmation from the famous family, fans have had to do a little detective work of their own.

Between supposed sightings of baby bumps and dodged interview questions, the “is she, isn't she” debate doesn't look like it's going to end any time soon, and her latest Snapchat has fans more confused than ever.

The reality TV star recently posted a photo of herself wearing a pair of oversized sunglasses from her new eyewear range – nothing strange there.

However, eagle-eyed followers spotted what looks like a pregnancy pillow in the reflection of the glasses.

The product is often used by mums-to-be for extra support and comfort while sleeping.

It's worth noting that the pillow could belong to Khloe's sister Kylie, who is also rumoured to be expecting.

A source told People magazine: 'Kylie isn’t going to publicly address her pregnancy until she gives birth. She’s not doing any public appearances and just wanted to take six months off.'

Can we just get a confirmation already? The suspense is killing us.

We all like be comfortable on a long haul flight (or a short one ever, idf we're being honest!)

And I challenge you to tell me of a more comfortable shoe than a gloriously fluffy pair of UGG boots.

Well, if you love hitting the airport in a cosy UGG boot, you may want to reconsider ever flying with Qantas Airlines (one of Australia's most popular).

Joanne Catherall, a singer from The Human League, was recently turned away from a Qantas Airlines business lounge because she was wearing UGGs.

Apparently, the airline deemed Joanne's UGG boots as 'sleepwear' – which is banned from business and first class lounges.

It all sounds a little extreme, if you ask us.

Also, does anyone else see the irony in the fact that UGGs are banned from an AUSTRALIAN airline – the birthplace of the UGG brand.

This is also not the first case of an airline attempting to police a woman's attire this year.

In March of this year, United Airlines made headlines  when they prohibited a young girl from boarding a flight because she did not meet their dress code policy.

She was wearing leggings… I mean, REALLY?

What do you think, ladies? Do airlines have a right to dictate what we wear?
