Yearly Archives: 2017

With Christmas just around the corner, it's safe to say that there'll be a few sore heads knocking around over the next few weeks.

Between office parties and catch-ups with friends, the festive season can leave even the most responsible of drinkers feeling a little worse for wear.

However, that could all be about to change because according to an Imperial College professor, hangover-free alcohol could be a reality in as little as 10 years.

Speaking to The International Business Times UK, Professor David Nutt predicted that the next generation wouldn't drink booze as we know them.

“In another 10 or 20 years, Western societies won’t drink alcohol except on rare occasions,” he said.

Instead, they will drink a synthetic alternative with fewer harmful side-effects.

Apparently it'll be called 'alcosynth' and it's what we'll on be drinking in 2028.

“Alcosynth will become the preferred drink, in the same way that I can see — almost within a decade now in the Western world — tobacco and cigarettes will disappear as they’re replaced by electronic cigarettes.”

Sounds good to us!

Christmas is a time for children worldwide. They majority of children will be lucky to be growing up in a loving family and spending these holidays doing simple holidays rituals.

Sadly, other children will not be so lucky. We ask you to spare a thought for children still living in orphanages this Christmas. They don't have families to put toys under the tree, they don't have santa visits and they certainly don't have turkey dinners.

Life in an orphanage is a little different, a skeletal staff will be on duty and there will be no one to ensure that you have a special day.

Would you like to change that this year?

Would you like to send some Christmas love to Children and young adults with disability living in Hincesti orphanage in the Republic of Moldova?

It is very simple…..sponsor them, spread the word and send on the love.

For just €20 you can provide a child with an individualised gift, a Christmas dinner and a Christmas Concert with Santa and artists.

For an extra €5 you can also pay for extra staff to be on duty to provide the necessary care that will not be available over the holidays.

It's a no brainer in our eyes!

Outreach Moldova is dedicated to providing human rights, medical care and social inclusion for children that have been abandoned or orphaned, children with special needs and children with terminal illnesses in the Republic of Moldova.

They do truly amazing work all year, but they're making a special appeal this Christmas – so that these children can experience a little magic.

Head on over to Go Fund Me now, and donate what you can.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

Health professionals in the Australia have been forced to apologise to a young woman after they misdiagnosed her endometriosis and blamed her symptoms on a 'bad diet'.

Karlie Wilkinson suffered from chronic pain and severe cramps for years before she was diagnosed with the condition.

After seeing multiple doctors, she was given a number of inaccurate explanations for her symptoms including bad period pains, appendicitis and a bad diet.

Some medics even suggested that the pain was all in her head.

At the age of 19, Karlie was finally diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition in which the layer of tissue that normally covers the inside of the uterus grows outside of it.

According to figures released by The Endometriosis Association of Ireland, approximately 10% of Irish women suffer from the condition and yet there remains a distinct lack of conversation around the topic.

But we're not alone. Women all across the world face difficulties in getting their symptoms acknowledged, and often feel isolated when a diagnosis is made.

And it's for this reason that Karlie set up a petition to get doctors to apologise for not taking her symptoms seriously.

With over 110,000 signatures, the successful campaign paved the way for Australia's medical community to recognise the condition as a genuine illness.

“I had no idea what was wrong with me but I was in ridiculous pain all the time and would sometimes bleed for a whole month,” says Karlie according to Metro.

“As I got older, it became so unbearable I ended up in the emergency room at least five times.”

“They would do different tests, ultrasounds and x-rays but they all came back normal and they said it was all in my head.”

She went on to describe how she was often made feel stupid when her symptoms were treated like a joke.

“There was even a couple of times that they seemed to make a joke out of it and I thought “if only you could feel what was happening to me right now.”

Since setting up the petition, Karlie has received an official response from Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt, stating: “The plan will focus on how to improve the lives of women who face this terrible condition.”

“Diagnosis of the condition currently takes on average around eight to nine years, placing a significant toll on individuals, families and the community.”

“This condition should have been better acknowledged and acted upon long ago but today we are taking action so the struggle that women face will no longer be silent or their battles private.”

Is it just us or is everyone and their mother getting engaged this month?

As a wise Hugh Grant once said, Love actually is all around this festive season, and while the tiniest part of us is trying desperately hard not to be bitter, most of us are just loving all the cute proposal videos doing the rounds.

And this might just be our favourite yet…

Last week, Gavin James helped his friend Rob pull off one of the most romantic marriage proposals of the year.

The singer-songwriter took some time out from his busy to film himself singing a few bars of the festive classic Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas before informing the future bride that her partner had an important question he wanted to ask.

Oh course, she said yes, and Rob took to Twitter to thank Gavin for all his help.

Congratulations are in order for the happy couple!

Santa is putting the finishing touches on his creations, and packing up his sleigh for the big journey ahead.

All the while, we are getting last minute presents, putting up decorations, and spending time with the people we love.

Decorations are definitely the best part of Christmas time, the lights, the trees and the stockings…

Available in the form of Gryfindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, the stockings feature the house crest along with specific colourful decoration.

There is also a metal charm emblem. The stocking is made from 100% polyester and measures approx. 43cm in length.

And while they're gorgeous and we want them all – they are not particularly budget friendly, at £28 a pop.

They're official merchandise, being sold by the Warner Brothers studios, via their online store.

However, if these stockings are a bit out of budget, fear not as the site has loads of other wizarding goodies that won't break the bank.

They have a full selection of sweets from the series, such as chocolate frogs and exploding bon bons – starting at just £6 (what a glorious stocking filler!)

The site is also selling gorgeous tree ornaments from just £10. So many options.

A newly commissioned BBC project promises to provide viewers with the “definitive” account of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

The feature length documentary will look at the disgraced producer's journey to the top of the entertainment industry and his subsequent fall from glory following a series of sexual assault allegations.

According to Variety, the 90-minute documentary will feature interviews from some of the actresses who have accused the producer of sexual misconduct as well, journalists, directors, actors and lawyers.

It's understood that some of the interviewees will be speaking publicly for the first time.

The Oscar-winning Simon Chinn is lined up to produce the doc, and although it will be shown on the BBC, it is hoped that the feature will also have a theatrical release, allowing it to qualify for both Academy Award and BAFTA nominations.

Speaking to Variety, Simon explained what drew him to the story: “As a little bit of an [industry] insider, I was fascinated with the story as it unfolded and not a little shocked.”

“As much as people knew a lot about Harvey and his reputation, there was plenty that we didn’t know.”

BBC's Tom McDonald says viewers can expect a film that will “ask difficult and challenging questions about complicity, the price of silence and the corrosive effects of power.”

“As well as revealing the inside story of the past few months in minute detail, it will also look to the past to tell the story of abuses of power within Hollywood since its very origins and chart the rise of Harvey Weinstein himself over many decades.”

According to report, Weinstein will take most of 2018 to produce, making a 2019 release likely.

Former Coronation Street star Bruno Langley has spoken out for the first time after being charged with two counts of sexual assault.

The 34-year-old was given a 12-month community order last month after he pleaded guilty to groping two women at a Manchester night club.

It's understood the father-of-one said he had been drinking heavily, and claims he can't remember the incident taking place.

Speaking to The Sunday Mirror, he said: “Someone texted, saying ‘Do you remember what happened?’ I said I’d no idea and thought I’d done the usual thing of falling over or something. They explained my behaviour. I was embarrassed, shocked by my actions.”

Under his sentencing, Bruno must undergo rehabilitation and adhere to a 7am to 7pm curfew for one year.

He was also ordered to pay each victim £250 and is required to sign the UK's Sex Offenders' Register for the next five years.

The actor insisted he was “truly sorry” for his crimes, admitting there is “no excuse” for his actions.

"I have no excuse, no one forced me to drink to such an extreme, but it is hard to explain why I would do anything as dreadful as that. It must have been awful for those women, and I am ashamed of myself. I'm truly sorry," he said.

"I sincerely apologise to the women, from the bottom of my heart. I promise I will never do anything like that again."

The soap star said he plans to spend the next year working on himself for the sake of his son.

“The only way I can prove how sorry I am to everyone involved is to make changes to my life and work on myself, to ensure this will never ever happen again. I wouldn’t let my son down again.”

Representatives from Ryanair are set to meet with the IMPACT trade union on Tuesday evening in a last-ditch attempt to put a stop to Wednesday's planned strike action.

According to reports, a spokesperson for IMPACT has said they are open to meeting sooner should Ryanair bosses agree.

The airline has said it will publish contingency plans “to minimise these disruptions” for customers.

A statement from the company said: "We apologise sincerely to our customers for any worry or concern that this threatened action, during Christmas week by a small number of very well paid pilots, may cause them.

"Rest assured that we will do everything we can to minimise disruption for our customers."

The union say they can not call off the strike action until a meeting has been held as they need to explore Ryanair’s offer of recognition and agree on the next phase of dispute resolution.

A source told The Sunday Independent: "There's history between the two organisations. Up until the latest company announcement, it had a very public and vehement attitude it wouldn't talk to unions.

"Essentially, they had a 'not over my dead body' approach to union recognition. Taking what they say – based on trust – is not a sensible thing to do."

Any passengers scheduled to fly with Ryanair on Wednesday, December 20, should visit ryanair.com for updates.
