Yearly Archives: 2017

Destiny's Child is completely iconic, and no one who existed in the 90s and 00s was immune from their catchy fire tunes.

In fact, who could forget their breakout performance at The Point in the year 2000? If you weren't there, disposable camera in hand, were you even a fan?

Well, if you missed them then, you may be in with a chance to see them once more.

Thanks to the work of some very savvy online detectives, it seems that a reunion could be on the cards.

OG fans of the band will remember original member LaTavia Robertson.

LaTavia had her Twitter followers in a tizzy after she posted a very cryptic message to the social media site.

The former band member eluded that she had a secret project in the works that she was unable to discuss publicly.

Now you may say that this could be about anything, but there's more to the web of intrigue.

Another former member, Michelle Williams, posted a snap of a stage costume she wore when Destiny's Child joined Beyonce on stage at the Supoerbowl in 2013.

Posting the snap to her Instagram story, along with the bee emoji, the singer said 'ya'll remember this performance outfit from the Superbowl?'

Obviously, this combined with LaTavia's tweet is starting to look more convincing, but it doesn't end there.

Beyonce uploaded and then deleted this snap of herself wearing an ACDC t-shirt, where only the DC letters of the band name are visible.

A post shared by (@beyonce.overdose) on

Another original band member Letoya  Luckett also posted a throwback to her singing days.

LeToya performed alongside Bey in Girls Tyme, the pre-Destiny's Child, in the early 90s.

Fans are speculating that after cancelling her Coachella performance this year, Beyonce wants to pull out all the stops for her rescheduled performance at Coachella 2018, and has called in Destiny's Child to make it the most legendary performance of all time.

Could it all be a coincidence?

We certainly hope not, because this is legit what we look like right now:

Love Actually is easily one of our favourite festive movies of all time, and we could never have imagined it taking place anywhere other London.

From the iconic backdrop to the crisp accents, the British capital plays as big a role in the 2003 film as any of the principle characters.

But how might the film have differed had it been set in our own capital city?

Now TV is here to answer that question for you with a post they shared on Facebook this afternoon.

Ladies, prepare to howl…

In October of this year, all eyes were on Hollywood as the movie industry attempted to process the allegations being levelled against a man who many felt they owed their careers to.

Harvey Weinstein's mammoth fall from grace has been the talking point of the entertainment industry for more than two months, with numerous actresses coming forward with harrowing stories of their own experience with the movie mogul.

It was this outpouring of stories which caused Salma Hayek to conclude that her experience at the hands of Weinstein didn't warrant any publicity, but upon reflection she realised she didn't want to speak up in case her family were unable to handle the details of her experience.

In a hugely revealing column for The New York Times this week, she wrote: "I hid from the responsibility to speak out with the excuse that enough people were already involved in shining a light on my monster."

"I didn’t consider my voice important, nor did I think it would make a difference," she admitted.

However, this week, the acclaimed actress, who worked with Weinstein on Oscar-nominated movie Frida, decided to come forward with her own story.

In a harrowing recap, the 51-year-old actress revealed that she consistently resisted Weinstein's advances, writing: "[I said] no to me taking a shower with him. No to letting him watch me take a shower."

"No to letting him give me a massage. No to letting a naked friend of his give me a massage. No to letting him give me oral sex. No to my getting naked with another woman."

According to Salma, her refusal to partake in sexual encounters on the set of the film infuriated the movie producer, with Salma writing: "The range of his persuasion tactics went from sweet-talking me to that one time when, in an attack of fury, he said the terrifying words, “I will kill you, don’t think I can’t.”

Salma's heartwrenching column details Weinstein's attempt to belittle the actress, with Salma recalling: "He told me that the only thing I had going for me was my sex appeal and that there was none of that in this movie."

"It was soul crushing because, I confess, lost in the fog of a sort of Stockholm syndrome, I wanted him to see me as an artist: not only as a capable actress but also as somebody who could identify a compelling story and had the vision to tell it in an original way."

Salma reveals she suffered a nervous breakdown on the set due to Weinstein's demands, writing: "For the first and last time in my career, I had a nervous breakdown: My body began to shake uncontrollably, my breath was short and I began to cry and cry, unable to stop, as if I were throwing up tears."

"My body wouldn’t stop crying and convulsing. At that point, I started throwing up," she recalled.

Salma's column details the aftermath of the film's release, Weinstein's attempt at a resolution and her own struggle to regain her equilibrium in the months that followed her time on a Weinstein film.

Weinstein has responded via a spokesperson to the lengthy article with a denial, citing that his demands hinged on the character's real-life journey.

"Mr. Weinstein regards Salma Hayek as a first-class actress and cast her in several of his movies. He was very proud of her Best Actress Academy Award nomination for Frida and continues to support her work.”

“Mr. Weinstein does not recall pressuring Salma to do a gratuitous sex scene with a female costar and he was not there for the filming. However, that was part of the story, as Frida Kahlo was bisexual and the more significant sex scene in the movie was choreographed by Ms. Hayek with Geoffrey Rush."

In the days that followed the uncovering of the Weinstein scandal, it became abundantly clear that the movie mogul was by no means alone in his abhorrent treatment of women.

In fact, the number of Hollywood heavy-hitters who soon found themselves at the centre of similar exposés was utterly staggering, with stars like Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman issuing statements in response to historic claims.

Indeed, the speed with which the accusations began flowing led the public to question just how many more men were complicit and how soon it would be before their conduct was discovered.

Morgan Spurlock, the star of the critically-acclaimed documentary Super Size Me, didn't asked himself those questions, but instead wondered how soon it would be before his own misconduct was exposed.

In a lengthy open letter which he posted to Twitter last night, the documentary-maker admitted to a number of events which highlight his contribution to a sexist and misogynistic culture.

"As I sit around watching hero after hero, man after man, fall at the realization of their past indiscretions, I don’t sit by and wonder “who will be next?” I wonder, “when will they come for me?”" he began.

"You see, I’ve come to understand after months of these revelations, that I am not some innocent bystander, I am also a part of the problem."

"Over my life, there have been many instances that parallel what we see everyday in the news," he continued. "When I was in college, a girl who I hooked up with on a one night stand accused me of rape. Not outright. There were no charges or investigations, but she wrote about the instance in a short story writing class and called me by name. A female friend who was in the class told be about it afterwards."

"I was floored," he wrote as he outlined the event as he remembered it.

"In my mind, we’d been drinking all night and went back to my room. We began fooling around, she pushed me off, then we laid in the bed and talked and laughed some more, and then began fooling around again," Morgan wrote. "We took off our clothes. She said she didn’t want to have sex, so we laid together, and talked, and kissed, and laughed, and then we started having sex."

Morgan explains that the woman in question suddenly referenced a child's toy and began crying, writing: "I didn’t know what to do. We stopped having sex and I rolled beside her."

"I tried to comfort her. To make her feel better. I thought I was doing ok, I believed she was feeling better. She believed she was raped."

Morgan goes on to outline a series of incidents which took place in the workplace eight years ago, writing: "I would call my female assistant “hot pants” or “sex pants” when I was yelling to her from the other side of the office. Something I thought was funny at the time, but then realized I had completely demeaned and belittled her to a place of non-existence."

"So, when she decided to quit, she came to me and said if I didn’t pay her a settlement, she would tell everyone. Being who I was, it was the last thing I wanted, so of course, I paid. I paid for peace of mind. I paid for her silence and cooperation. Most of all, I paid so I could remain who I was."

The 47-year-old continues the open letter by admitting he has been unfaithful in every relationship he has been in, and insists that he feels deep regret over the way in which he treated the women he proclaimed to love.

"I hurt them. And I hate it. But it didn’t make me stop," he admitted. "The worst part is, I’m someone who consistently hurts those closest to me. From my wife, to my friends, to my family, to my partners & co-workers. I have helped create a world of disrespect through my own actions."

The filmaker questions his actions, asking: "What caused me to act this way? Is it all ego? Or was it the sexual abuse I suffered as a boy and as a young man in my teens?"

"Is it because my father left my mother when I was child? Or that she believed he never respected her, so that disrespect carried over into their son?"

Spurlock acknowledges that these potential root causes don't detract from the pain he caused, writing: "None of these things matter when you chip away at someone and consistently make them feel like less of a person. I am part of the problem. We all are."

Attempting to offer a solution by way of redemption, Spurlock finishes the letter by vowing to change his approach, writing: "The only individual I have control over is me. "

"So starting today, I’m going to be more honest with you and myself. I’m going to lay it all out in the open. Maybe that will be a start. Who knows. But I do know I've talked enough in my life … I'm finally ready to listen."

Twitter has had a mixed reaction to Spurlock's letter, with some commending him for his 'bravery' and others insisting that Spurlock's letter is nothing more than a feeble attempt at damage control.

Kirsten Dunst is expecting her first child with fiance Jesse Plemons, a source told Us Weekly

The expecting mum mentioned she was in baby mode an interview with Marie Claire U.K. this summer, saying, 'It’s time to have babies and chill.'

The Beguiled star confessed that she didn't always feel overly maternal.

A post shared by Kirsten Dunst (@kirstendunst) on

'I wasn’t one of those 'I need a baby!' people until my goddaughter was born. I love her so much,' she shared.

'That love is just like… you can’t experience that unless you have a kid. I put her to bed last night and she woke up this morning and said to her mom, 'Where’s Kiki?' I just love that love. That’s what I want.'

The Little Women actress and her 29-year-old beau started dating last year when they were playing husband and wife on the TV show Fargo.

A post shared by Kirsten Dunst (@kirstendunst) on

She called Jesse her 'best friend' and her 'favourite actor' to work with when speaking with Marie Claire U.K.

The two are expected to marry in Austin this spring.

There still aren't any details on when to expect the precious bundle of joy's arrival.

The Abortion Rights Campaign has today welcomed some of the recommendations from the Oireachtas Committee.

The Committee has today voted in favour to Repeal the 8th Amendment to the Irish constitution 'with no restriction as to reason' in cases of pregnancy up to 12 weeks.

Recognising them as 'an important step towards securing real and realistic abortion access in Ireland, ARC highlights the importance of ensuring free, safe, and legal abortion access in the impending legislation.

A post shared by SHEmazing! (@shemazingie) on

'The majority of the members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee have acted in good faith throughout the committee hearings, and have heeded the expert advice given by those invited to address them. Now the Government must act swiftly in order to protect those in Ireland who seek abortions every day,' ARC spokesperson Sarah Monaghan said.

'They must immediately undertake the work required that will ensure we have a referendum in the first half of next year.'

'We welcome the recommendation to allow access to abortion without restrictions as to reason.

A post shared by Louise Harvey (@louiseharvey93) on

'However restricting this to only the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is far from the barrier-free access required to provide women and pregnant people in Ireland with proper, compassionate care.'

'Nonetheless, it was encouraging to see the Committee recommending that the abortion pill be made available via GPs, and that those seeking abortion as a result of rape not be required to “prove” their attack.'

'We were also pleased to see a recommendation for access to abortion without gestational limits in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.'

'However, the Committee’s decision to reject similar access in cases of serious foetal anomaly will affect families who may not receive an accurate diagnosis until later in pregnancy.'

Leo Varadkar today reiterated that he would like to see a referendum be held on the issue be held next May.

Ah Christmas – it truly is the most wonderful (and expensive) time of the year.

Between catching up with old friends, the office Kris kindle and seasonal party wear, the festive season can leave even the most avid of savers a bit strapped for cash.

But never fear, because we've rounded up all of the best gifts the high street has to offer – and they're all under €15.00.

From home accessories to practical stationary, here's our top (budget-friendly) picks.

With only 12 days left until Christmas, we decided it was time to contemplate which Irish influencers really reached us with their initiative, creativity and contribution to society, online or IRL.

Here at SHEmazing HQ, we want to pay homage to the influencers who utilise their platforms to actually make a difference in people's lives.

Whether it's committing themselves to cruelty-free living, promoting body positivity, or actually speaking out against the veneer that can mask the reality of making a living online, here are 12 fierce females whose message really spoke to us in 2017.

12. The Skin Nerd

Everyone has some skin issues at some stage of their lives, and when it happens, it can be tough to deal with in an online culture that sees many models, celebs and influencers airbrushing their skin into oblivion.

Luckily Jennifer Rock, aka the Skin Nerd is on hand. Since the development of her Cleanse Off Mitt, Jennifer has been helping to normalise the existence of skin problems, while advising Irish women on how they can soothe break outs and perfect skin texture.

11. Naomi Clarke

Naomi, or The Style Fairy as she is known to her Insta followers, fills her feed with feminine fashion and parenting pics.

Along with her aesthetic snaps and style tips, the mum has always been open with her followers about her struggle living with Type 1 Diabetes.

The blogger has even given a talk at Temple Street Children's Hospital, in order to help teenagers living with the condition. Yas queen.

10. Enya Martin

If laughter is the best medicine, then a trip to comedian Enya's Facebook page could cure a medley of ailments.

The Dublin-based comedy queen has been cracking us up all year with her relatable sketches.

Giz A Laugh has been brightening up our darkest days over the last 12 months, so we had to honour Enya for her comedic contribution to our lives.

9. Irena Drezi

Visibility for plus-size women in the fashion industry has come on leaps and bounds, but there is still a way to go.

Not Another Agency model Irena uses her Instagram to promote body positivity while showcasing her distinct fashion taste to her 90k followers.

'My biggest mistake was constantly comparing myself to others, there was a fixed image in my head that portrayed 'perfection' when in reality it doesn't exist,' she wrote on the social media site.

'As a model I'm categorised as 'plus size' when really the average woman is a UK size 12/14 like me. Stop striving for perfection and just accept yourself.'

8. Veg Huns

The Veg Huns (how much do you love that name?) are a triad of Dublin-based gals promoting an ethical, plant-based lifestyle.

Their combined YouTube videos, Facebook page and Instagram give wannabe vegans a place to find hints and tips on transitioning to the lifestyle with a distinctly Irish feel.

They also promote Irish businesses who make things easier for the thousands of vegans living on the Emerald Isle.

7. Siobhan O'Hagan

Siobhan has built one of the most substantial Irish fitness followings, and is carving out a health and fitness empire of her very own.

The PT has admitted that she isn't a fan of the word influencer, and while she may be a key player in Ireland's fit fam phenomenon, she is always open about the gruelling mental and physical aspects of body building.

'One thing I never really planned for was to be a social media influencer,' she previously told SHEmazing

'I’m not even a fan of the word, but I realised that I am always my own advertisement and now I feel like I am living in my own little reality TV show.'

6. Anouska Proetta Brandon

While Anouska may be known for her razor sharp style and equally sharp photography skills, this year she put her name to an environmentally-friendly initiative.

Coffeangel this year created a KeepCup in an effort to combat the fact that up to 2 million coffee cups end up in Irish landfills every single day.

Anouska, who was involved in the campaign production, put her content creation skills to good use in her captivating video about the concept.

We also commend her for her honesty regarding her over-bleached locks, there aren't many bloggers who would admit to making a beauty mistake, and we're pretty sure every blondie has come close to this one.

5. Sarah Hanrahan

As well as being one of the most authentic and down-to-earth bloggers out there, this year Sarah branched even further out of the typical 'influencer' conversation topics by discussing sponsored content.

Using her Instagram as a platform, Sarah candidly discussed the over-saturation of sponsored content, hallmarked by #ad, we see on social media.

Reminding her followers that there is an unfollow button for a reason, she pointed out that they don't have to be at the receiving end of unwanted ads if they choose not to be, a risky move for any influencer.

Luckily, even Sarah's sponsored content is well thought out, creative and credible, and so she is one of few who could reliably comment on the matter.

4. The Food Medic

The Food Medic, aka Dr Hazel Wallace, has always argued the case for healthy, balanced eating.

The junior doctor and qualified PT is a fitness 'grammer with a legitimate education in human health.

Hazel has also been open in the past about struggling with mental health issues, and is a solid reminder that it is as important to care for your mental health as it is your physical.

In the last 12 months, the doctor also tacked the issue of dangerous skinny fit teas which began cropping up online, promoted by everyone from the TOWIE cast to the Kardashians, by promoting a campaign to remove dangerous laxatives from detox tea. Amazing role model, much?

3. Anna Geary

Former Cork camogie star Anna Geary is passionate about women in sport.

The wellbeing coach is intent on keeping Irish families fit and healthy thorough a wholesome combination of healthy eating and sport, which is clear from her work on Ireland's Fittest Family.

Anna keeps things relatable on her Instagram, showcasing her glamorous side as well as her down-to-earth nature.

2. Leanne Woodfull

This year, long-time blogger Leanne Woodfull took a step in an ethical direction by pledging to only promote cruelty-free products and companies on her blog and social media channel.

This is a refreshing change from influencers who never give a second thought to the ethical implications of their most recent makeup haul.

The pro-choice Dubliner also made a bold move by calling out other bloggers for their silence on the issue of abortion rights in Ireland in an open letter on her blog, Thunder & Threads

'The silence from my peers in the blogging and social media world confuses and upsets me daily,' she wrote.

'We have each worked hard on and attracted influential online platforms, that people venture to to hear our words, thoughts and recommendations. Somehow, human rights and tragedy don't fit into those platforms though for the majority – despite the influence to help and educate at hand.'

1. Andrea Horan

Where to even begin with Andrea Horan?

As well as inspiring women across Ireland to don their most dramatic, animal-print statement pieces, the Tropical Popical entrepreneur is the creative force behind some of Dublin's most innovative concepts.

In the last 12 months alone, the abortion rights campaigner has encouraged major discussion about Ireland's anti-abortion laws through the further development of The Hunreal Issues.

The business woman and fashion force is also fighting period poverty by encouraging women to drop off extra sanitary supplies to Tropical Popical to be distributed to homeless women in Dublin who otherwise would not have access to feminine hygiene products.
