Yearly Archives: 2017

There are few among us who don't know someone who dreads the holiday season each year.

Whether they're experiencing financial difficulties, enduring a bereavement or suffer from a condition which makes constant socialising and compulsory joviality almost agonising, not everyone awaits the festive season with bated breath.

Tapping into this all too familiar truth in a recent article for Time magazine, Kesha encouraged readers to navigate the festivities with the welfare of one person in mind – themselves.

"All those plans and expectations of joy can turn tougher than they sound," Kesha acknowledged.

"This is especially true for those of us who struggle with mental illness – be it depression, anxiety, addiction or any other challenges."

"In so many ways, the holidays can throw you off your game  – and that can shake you. When you have a routine, it’s easier to manage whatever mental struggles you may be faced with, and when that routine is broken, it can trigger things you may not be ready to face."

Uttering a sentiment which will resonate with millions, Kesha confided: "Around the holidays, I often feel like I’m supposed to be everywhere, with everyone — all with the added guilt that it’s the season of giving."

"To fight this, I’ve developed a mantra: It’s not selfish to take time for yourself," she encouraged.

Reminding readers that Christmas is as much about taking a step back as it is diving in, the 30-year-old urged anyone struggling to ignore the incessant soundtrack of the season, and simply take time to just be.

"It’s not your responsibility to try to make the whole world happy. Especially since sometimes it’s not that easy to make yourself happy, either — even with all the celebrations and gifts and seasonal decorations, foods and drinks, which can only do so much."

"So don’t ask yourself things like “It’s almost Christmas, why am I not happy?” That can turn into a shame cycle. It’s just another day — don’t put unrealistic expectations on it, and don’t beat yourself up."

If you listen to no other advice this week, listen to that.

In the aftermath of recent revelations pertaining to two of Hollywood's biggest names, Gabriel Byrne, chose to discuss his impression of both Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein.

In a revealing interview with The Sunday Times, the Irish actor, who starred in The Usual Suspects alongside Spacey and was attached to three Weinstein films, gave an insight into the men's behaviour both on-set, and behind the scenes.

While discussing the 1995 film, which won Spacey an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Gabriel revealed that filming on The Usual Suspects temporarily shut down due to Spacey's conduct.

"I mean, he was kind of a joke in that people would say 'That's Kevin', but nobody really understood the depth of his predations," Gabriel explained. "I did not know honestly then the extent of his violence."

"It was only years later that we began to understand that filming was closed down for a particular reason and that was because of inappropriate sexual behaviour by Spacey."

Turning his attention to Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual harassment, assault and rape, the 67-year-old Dubliner took a very dim view of the movie mogul.

"I knew he was a sleazebag," Gabriel confirmed. "I knew he was a bully and I saw his bullying up close."

"I saw him be absolutely appalling, not just to women but to men as well. He had very little respect for any kind of human being."

The mother of a young man, who was killed when terrorists targeted an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, has reached out to POTUS Donald Trump in a desperate bid to highlight the danger of the remarks he makes online.

After Trump retweeted three unverified videos from the account of Jayda Fransen last week, the deputy leader of the far-right group Britain First, British politicians were quick to condemn his actions.

Unsurprisingly, Trump chose not to heed their criticism and instead lashed out at British Prime Minister, Theresa May, by encouraging her not to focus on his online conduct, but direct her attention to the 'Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom.'

Responding to the former reality star's assessment of global terrorism, Figen Murray tweeted the president and laid bare her experience of terrorism.

"My son Martyn Hett was killed at Manchester arena," Figen Murray began in a tweet in recent days."So I experienced terror first hand."

Urging the President to see the folly in his attitude, Figen reminded him that his approach will have a detrimental impact on the wider public.

"But spreading racist material is equal to throwing petrol into a burning fire. Anger breeds anger, hate breeds hate! Please just stop all this hate campaign."

Figen's tweet has been liked more than 15,000 times since its upload in recent days.

Earlier this year, P!nk explained that she has had to tackle some very delicate issues with her six-year-old daughter, Willow.

While accepting the 2017 Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. the singer revealed that her oldest child considered herself ugly.

"I look like a boy with long hair," Willow told her mother.

Stunned by both her daughter's candour and lack of self-belief, P!nk decided to use world-famous artists to teach her daughter that refusing to follow the crowd when it comes to a gender-specific appearance is something to celebrate.

As P!nk explained in her speech, her approach seemed to work, and Willow is now growing up in a 'label-less' house – something the singer feels is a benefit to her daughter.

Speaking recently to The Mirror, the singer reaffirmed: "We are a very label-less household. Last week, Willow told me she is going to marry an African woman. I was like, 'Great!'"

"And we are going to live with you while our house is getting ready," Willow warned her mum.

However, Willow's family home isn't the only place where diversity is celebrated P!nk added, before recognising her child's school attempts at contributing to the conversation.

"The bathroom outside the kindergarten said, 'Gender Neutral, Anybody,' and it was a drawing of many different shapes," the What About Us said.

"I took a picture of it and I wrote: 'Progress.' I thought that was awesome. I love that kids are having this conversation."

"This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship," so said Australian MP, Tim Wilson, while addressing his partner, Ryan Bolger, in the Australian House of Representative today.

Referring to the same-sex marriage debate which had been been raging in Australia prior to the country's vote to legalise it last month, Wilson was present to contribute to legislation, and used his platform to ask one very significant question.

Visibly emotional. Wilson reflected on their journey together – both personally and professionally – before proposing to his partner.

"In my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands. They are the answer to the question we cannot ask," Wilson said.

"So there’s only one thing left to do; Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?”

Ladies, prepare yourselves for this one.

According to a report in The Irish Times, the Health Service Executive has seen an increase in the number of girls availing of the HPV vaccine this year.

It is understood that the figure has risen from 50 percent to 61 percent – a welcome result following a successful campaign, backed by the World Health Organisation, to promote the vaccine.

Concerns regarding its safety resulted in a sharp drop in the number of school-age girls getting vaccinated, decreasing from 87 per cent in the 2014/2015 school year to 50 per cent last year.

In September of this year, following remarks made by Phonsie Cullinan, the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, on the reliability of the HPV vaccine, two Ministers advised the Church to exclude themselves from current medical debate.

Highlighting Bishop Cullinane's lack of medical qualifications, Minister Simon Harris said: “I don’t want to get into a spat with anybody, bishop or no bishop, but at the end of the day the people qualified to give medical advice on vaccinations are doctors and, funnily enough, not bishops.”

Minister John Halligan made reference to the Church's hugely contentious reputation, saying: "Religion has no place in medical debate and the Catholic Church’s track record on the medical welfare of Irish women speaks for itself."

Today, Minister Harris took to Twitter to celebrate the work done by all those involved in the campaign, writing: "Proud to work with many dedicated people in @HSELive & HPV Alliance to bring this about."

Director general of the HSE, Tony O’Brien, called the increase in the number of recipients 'encouraging'.

They're either in the middle of a trip or planning their next one, and that actually makes them very easy to buy for, because there is always some handy gadget or accessory which they'll appreciate on their next jaunt abroad.

Chloe Moretz has been granted a restraining order against an individual who claims the actress is his wife.

Terry Daniel Quick is required to stay at least 100 yards away from the 20-year-old actress after it was confirmed he had been stalking the star, both in person and online.

In legal documents obtained by TMZ, authorities heard that Quick had followed the actress and her boyfriend, Brooklyn Beckham, into a concert in November and had also presented himself at Chloe's home that same month.

When apprehended by police, Quick, who regularly posts updates regarding his stalking behaviour online, told authorities that he was engaged to the Kickass star.

"Quick's online posts, harassment and stalking has become seriously alarming, annoying and harassing," read the legal document pertaining to Chloe's case.

In addition to avoiding Chloe, Quick is forbidden from having contact with her mother and brother.

Much as we adore Britney Jean Spears and the absolute corkers she has gifted the music scene over the past 18 years, it's fair to say she wasn't blessed with a voice quite as powerful as Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey.

And that's fine – good ol' Brit brings her own thing to the stage, and we're always here for it.

So when she uploaded herself performing a rendition of Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love in honour of her 36th birthday, we couldn't hit play fast enough.

The 36-year-old clearly gave it her all, and props for that as they say, but if we had to choose, we'd probably opt for a quick blast of Toxic next time.

While some Instagram users compared her voice to a chipmunk's, hundreds others heaped praise upon the performance, with one writing: "Truly blessed with your beautiful voice."

We'll let you be the judge of that one…
