As someone who is generally referred to as 'Nee-am-huh' on holidays, I can confirm that having an Irish name poses some linguistic challenges while abroad.

The silent letters, the extra letters, the Godforsaken fadas; it's no surprise that anyone unfamiliar with the Irish language would struggle pronouncing any name born of the Emerald Isle.

And while you might assume we're used to it, a recent tweet posted by Irish comedian, David O'Doherty, has been quick to remind us that the hurt runs deep, and the sense of competition over the least-pronounceable name even deeper.

"Happy Christmas to all the Aoifes not at home in Ireland this Christmas," David wrote on Christmas Eve. "It’s hard being called Aoife, but especially when you’re overseas. You are in my thoughts #aoifes."

And while Aoifes far and wide took to Twitter to thank David for his thoughts, it seems a few disgruntled social media users wanted equal recognition.

"How about being a Nuala all year round! Real life Irish struggles," wrote one Twitter user to which David replied: "THIS IS A SHOUT-OUT TO AOIFES, NUALA. You will get your turn."

"All the Siobháns, Oisíns, Caoimhes, Saoirses, Siofras, Meadhbhs and Eoghans need to stop being angry at me," David followed up.

But Twitter wasn't having it, and it wasn't long before every damn name was getting a shout-out.

And the clincher?

Let's face it, Christmas isn't like the commercials.

Hard and all as we might try each and every year, December 25 rarely goes off without a hitch.

And while you may be certain other families are having a picture-perfect day while yours struggles to remain civil, Twitter is here to remind you that this simply isn't the case.

Whether it's present-related catastrophes or sibling-related rows – the root of which no one can remember – Christmas Day is absolutely rife with fails.

And we're only too happy to take a closer look…

Well, we needed that…

Let's be honest, in recent weeks the vast majority of us will have wondered which member of our social media circle would announce that their partner got down on one knee to the sound of Fairytale of New York.

With Christmas Day and New Year's Eve vying for poll position in the festive proposal stakes, there are few of us who won't be posting congratulations messages on at least one of our social media platforms over the next week or so.

But whether you're a die-hard romantic or loathe the idea of a social media engagement, you'll be hardpressed not to shed a tear over this festive proposal with a twist.

Uploaded to Twitter by Music1996Man, the footage tells the story of one couple's journey back to each other.

"My parents were married for more than 20 years, divorced, fought a lot, went to work on themselves. Years later, they start dating and as of yesterday, this happened," he wrote. "Congrats Mom and Dad! True love always finds its way back around."

And with more than 745,000 likes in just three days, it seems Twitter's regular cynics have decided to back off this festive season.

Now excuse us while we weep into our Stephen's Day gin.

Given how likely it is you were in a food-induced coma during its slot, we feel obliged to tell you that Brooklyn was aired on RTÉ last night.

We also feel obliged to disclose that it was subsequently the subject of much discussion on Twitter.

From ex-pats admitting they were never too far from a Kleenex during Saoirse Ronan's performance, to disgruntled individuals lamenting their decision to sit through a sex scene in the presence of their parents, Twitter was a real mixed bag last night.

And if you want to be in a position to continue the discussion during the traditional Stephen's Day drinks later today, we suggest you throw your eye over our favourite tweets on the topic.

Louisburgh in Co Mayo is a community in mourning following the tragic death of two young men in the early hours of Christmas morning.

The bodies of the men, aged 26 and 27, were recovered from the Carrownisky River after the SUV in which they were travelling entered the water shortly after 02.30 yesterday.

A third passenger managed to escape the vehicle and raise the alarm, resulting in a major search operation involving garda divers and the Coast Guard.

While it is thought that bad weather conditions caused the vehicle to enter the water, Gardaí investigations are ongoing.

The bodies of the victims, both of whom are from the Louisburgh area, were removed to University Hospital Castlebar when post mortem examinations will be carried out later today.

Okay, not going to lie, this story has us BAWLING.

There are plenty of people who find themselves lonely at Christmas, for any number of reasons. It's heartbreaking to think of those who don't have anyone to spend the holidays with.

Well, good Samaritans Shashi and Pallu Patel decided to do something for people who need a little company this Christmas.

The Patels have run their shop Meet & Deep News in Twickenham, south west London, for decades. The parents get help from their two sons, Deepen and Meeten.

Although they are Hindu, the family LOVES getting into the Christmas spirit.

When the couple found out that some local people were spending the holiday on their own, the Patels decided to open their shop for Christmas day.

"You don't have to buy anything… we just want to see you!" the Patels wrote in a Facebook post. They will be open from noon to 2pm on December 25, for hugs, mince pies, and much-needed chats.

Shashi and Pallu ended their Christmas invitation with the sweetest sentiment: "We are family."

Our hearts are bursting with Christmas cheer just hearing that!

The tradition has continued for years now – and it's gone viral! Meet & Deep News' post inviting lonely people to stop by on the holiday has been shared over 50,000 times.

It's wonderful to see how many people have been touched by the Patels' compassion.

The family doesn't confine their positivity to just one day of the year, though. The Meet & Deep News' Facebook page is brimming with positivity and smile-inducing posts.

We definitely recommend a scroll.

It's a well known fact that Taylor Swift goes above and beyond when it comes to showing her fans just how much she appreciates them.

From hosting album listening parties at her private home, to helping struggling fans pay off their student loans, Taylor truly takes joy in giving back to the people who helped her get where she is today.

And now it looks like she may have just out herself altogether.

According to reports, the singer bought a house for a homeless fan named Stephanie who was eight months pregnant.

Homeless, pregnant, and trying to cope with her boyfriend's unemployment, Stephanie found her self in an extremely tough situation.

The superfan was due to attend Taylor's concert in Manchester when her mum decided to ask Taylor to make her feel special at the show.

But of course, Taylor being Taylor, she did so much more than that.

Stephanie recently posted the full story on the singer's new app The Swift Life:

"I’ve been contemplating posting this story for a while. I’ve finally decided to tell you all what Taylor did for me this night. What many of you don’t know is that for 8 months of my pregnancy I was homeless.

"Long story short our first flat was condemned for health and safety reasons and we lost everything.

"To add to the stress, during this time Matthew lost his job. My mum told Taylor and just asked her to make me feel special at her show I was attending in Manchester.

"After the show Taylor took us back to her dressing room where she told me, 'Stephanie, You’ve been in my life for a long time and you’ve never asked me for anything," Stephanie wrote.

"'You could have reached out and I would have helped you. But you didn’t. You’re mum told me.'

"She told me she wanted to give me the money back for my ticket that night," the fan wrote.

"What she actually did was help us buy a home and all I needed for my baby. She told me, 'I want you to be able to enjoy your little girl, not have to worry about all this stuff.'

"That night she gave me her hand and lifted me off the ground. "The same way she’s done for 12 years. I love her forever. #SwiftStories #Taymoji #MySwiftStory."

Such an amazing story!

Boris Johnson's sister Rachel has been revealed as the first contestant for the upcoming series of Celebrity Big Brother

Channel 5 made the announcement in a tweet posted on Sunday, confirming the 53-year-old journalist would enter the Big Brother house when the series starts on January 2.

The year will see an all-female line-up enter the house on launch night, though it's believed that male celebrities will enter as the series goes on.

Sister to Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and daughter of former MEP Stanley Johnson, Rachel is no stranger to the world or reality TV, with her father having recently found success on ITV's I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

Stanley, 77, proved to be very popular among his campmates, but his time in the jungle came to an end  when he became the fifth celebrity to be voted out by the public.

Speaking about the announcement in her Mail on Sunday column, Rachel explained he reasons for wanting to take part.

"I am a firm believer that you only regret the things in life you don’t do, not the things you do do," she wrote.

‘I’ve never sat down and watched CBB in the way my children religiously binge-watch it, but when Channel 5 came calling, I didn’t delete the annual email asking me to be on. It was because this one said that the new series was all about female empowerment and 100 years since women got the vote.

‘It was going to be called Big Sister (it’s ended up being called Celebrity Big Brother: Year Of The Woman), with a “classy” all-female line-up for the launch. Female politicians, performance artists, broadcasters. Serious stuff. Big names were duly dropped, and the emphasis on “empowerment” rather than “ritual humiliation” promised.’

Celebrity Big Brother kicks off at 9pm on Channel 5 on January 2.
