Yearly Archives: 2017

Well, this is an unmitigated disaster.

It seems the excitement of tonight's Great British Bake-Off final went to poor Prue Leith's head because she only went and spoiled the whole thing.

That's right, ladies, the GBBO judge took to Twitter and sent her congratulations to this year's winner… before the show aired.

Naturally, the tweet came down almost as quickly as it went up, but the damage was already done.

And Twitter is facepalming all over itself this morning.

And yes, we did see the original tweet, and no we shan't ruin it for you.

*Excuse us while we cancel our GBBO party for later.*

Yesterday, Kevin Spacey made the decision to respond to allegations of misconduct against a minor by coming out as homosexual – a move which has been condemned by the public, the press, his peers, and most notably, the LGBTQ community.

Appalled that the Hollywood star would not only attempt to deflect attention from the matter at hand, but also draw a comparison between paedophilia and homosexuality, Twitter was quick to condemn the House of Cards star.

In the wake of the controversy, former Star Trek actor, George Takei, was asked his opinion, and ultimately concluded that an obvious abuse of power is at the heart of these issues.

"When power is used in a non-consensual situation, it is a wrong," George told The Hollywood Reporter.

Referring to the Star Trek star, who alleged that Spacey attempted to 'seduce' him when he was just 14, George added: "For Anthony Rapp, he has had to live with the memory of this experience of decades ago."

George dismissed Spacey's argument that he does not recollect the incident which reportedly took place in the 1980s, and asserted that Spacey has a responsibility towards the younger actor, and on that occasion chose to ignore it.

“For Kevin Spacey, who claims not to remember the incident, he was the older, dominant one who had his way."

"Men who improperly harass or assault do not do so because they are gay or straight — that is a deflection. They do so because they have the power, and they chose to abuse it," George argued.

Producers look set to move ahead with plans to create a potential House of Cards spin-off series, set in the same universe as the political drama.

The news follows the announcement that production of the hit Netflix show will cease after six series.

It comes just days after the series' lead actor, Kevin Spacey, was accused of sexually harassing an underage boy more than 20 years ago.

Broadway actor, Anthony Rapp, claims Spacey tried to seduce him when he was just 14-years-old.

“I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually,” he told BuzzFeed.

The House of Cards actor has since issued a statement saying he does not recall the incident and offered an apology before announcing that he is living his life “as a gay man.”

It's understood the decision to end the Netflix drama was made before the claims emerged, though this is yet to be confirmed.

According to Variety, producers are now in the early stages of development of multiple spin-off ideas, including a series focused around Doug Stamper's career.

It's no secret that Liam Gallagher likes to express his opinion.

If you only know what mitosis is as a result of binge-watching Sabrina, The Teenage Witch throughout your childhood, then it's likely you were a die-hard fan of the Nickelodeon show.

(And if not, then it's high-time you know that it's the process of cell division.)

Anyway, the cast of our favourite childhood show did us all a solid in recent days by reuniting at L.A Comic Con, and taking part in a special panel where they reflected on their time in the fictional town of Westbridge.

Melissa Joan Hart, who played the half-mortal, half-witch for seven years, treated her fans and followers to candid shots with her former castmates.

As not everyone could make the big day, Melissa paid tribute in some captions, writing: "Missing some of our friends but having fun catching up after 20 years."

"OH….MY….STARS….Sabrina reunion!!!! I can't deal! I've waited for this," gushed one while another added: "Oh god please please tell me that you guys are bringing the show back!"

An Irish expat has been found dead after he went missing form his home in Bahrain nearly two weeks ago.

Extensive searches were carried out after Dublin native, Conor David Dunne, was reported missing by his colleagues when he failed to turn up for work at Nass Contracting Company.

On Saturday, the body of the 43-year-old was recovered from a canal in the country's Amwaj Islands.

His remains were taken to the Salmaniya Medical Complex where a formal identification process took place.

The exact circumstances around his death are not yet known, though it's been reported that initial details showed no criminal suspicion.

It's also understood that he was admitted to the American Mission Hospital with high blood pressure just days before he went missing.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they were aware of the case and consular assistance was being provided to Mr Dunne's family.

An arrest warrant has been issued for actress Rose McGowan after items she left behind at Washing Dulles International Airport tested positive for narcotics.

According to reports, Washington Police say the warrant was obtained on February 1 of this year, and insist they have made efforts to reach out to the actress before now.

It's not clear when the actress became aware of the warrant, though some think the timing of the news is suspicious given that the actress was one of the leading voices in the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Taking to Twitter, Rose suggested the warrant was an attempt to silence her.

“Are they trying to silence me?” she wrote on her page.

“There is a warrant out for my arrest in Virginia. What a load of HORSESH**.”

The actress is just one of 60 women in the film industry to accuse the producer of rape and sexual harassment.

Weinstein has unequivocally denied all allegations made against him, however, The New York Times recently reported that he made a $100,000 settlement to Rose in 1997, which included a clause against speaking about it publicly.

He is currently under investigation by both the Met and US police though no charges have yet been made.

Irish Rail customers will need to make alternative travel arrangements tomorrow morning as staff at Iarnród Éireann prepare for the first of five one-day strikes over pay tomorrow.

Some 155,000 people are expected to be affected by the stoppages which include all Dart, Intercity and commuter rail services.

Both management and unions believe industrial action is inevitable, with Dermot O’Leary, General Secretary for the National Bus and Rail Union saying he did not see “any viable alternative.”

The strike is expected to cost the transport company €600,000 in fare revenue and €300,000 in National Transport Authorities penalties.

Staff at Iarnród Éireann have not had a pay rise in almost 10 years and are looking for a “no strings attached” increase of 3.75 per cent per year.

Further strikes are scheduled for November 7, November 14, November 23, and December 8.

Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann will not be accepting Iarnród Éireann tickets during the strike action, though passengers who have pre-booked tickets for today will have the fare automatically refunded to their accounts.

Members of the public and high-profile names in the entertainment industry have taken to Twitter today to condemn Kevin Spacey's response to allegations he behaved in appropriately towards a child actor in the 1980s.

After claiming to have no recollection of an exchange with Star Trek actor, Anthony Rapp, the actor then went on to use the same statement as a platform to come out as gay.

Unsurprisingly, the message was met with incredulity from the press and public, who wasted no time telling the House of Cards star that there exists no correlation between homosexuality and paedophilia.

Weighing in on the discussion, House of Cards creator, Beau Willimon, has asserted that the reports currently surrounding Spacey have made for unsettling reading.

Taking to Twitter, Beau wrote: "Anthony Rapp’s story is deeply troubling."

"During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on House of Cards, I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behavior on set or off."

"That said," Beau continued. "I take reports of such behavior seriously and this is no exception. I feel for Mr. Rapp and I support his courage.”

Despite the backlash surrouning Spacey's statement, the post has been liked in excess of 55,000 times on Twitter so far today.

Niall Horan's ascension to super-stardom was confirmed this weekend as his debut album, Flicker, raced straight to the top of the US charts, and secured itself a place at No.1.

Taking to Twitter to pay tribute to everyone involved in his success, a clearly overwhelmed Niall sounded incredulous over his career trajectory.

In a heartfelt post, he wrote: "My mind is completely blown. An album that I wrote has gone to #1 in the United States and I cannot thank you guys enough for supporting it."

"It’s been a crazy couple of years for me between writing, recording and promoting this record,” the Mullingar-native continued. “Today it really feels like all the hard work has paid off."

The singer went on to thank his label, his management and his band for their guidance and support before turning his attention to his loyal fanbase.

"You are incredible!" he told them. "The love I get on a daily basis is amazing. Thank you and thank you again!"

Prior to securing the No. 1 spot, Niall tweeted his enthusiasm over his debut album's release, telling fans: "It's something I've worked really hard on and I'm incredibly proud of it."

Elaborating on the personal nature of the record, he added;" This is the first time I've put my thoughts and emotions on paper and then onto record and it feels really good."

As if we couldn't love that lad enough.

Over the weekend we reported that Coronation Street producers had recently made the decision to write Bruno Langley,  who plays Todd Grimshaw, out of the long-running soap.

It appeared that the decision to axe Langley came following reports that the actor has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault – something Coronation Street bosses denied in a statement relating to the character's departure.

“His contract ended on October 26th following an internal inquiry,” they said. “This inquiry was separate to any police investigation and was independent of any inquiries they are making.”

Today it has been confirmed that the 34-year-old actor has indeed been charged with two counts of sexual assault following an incident on October 1 in Manchester.

A Greater Manchester police spokeswoman said: “Bruno Langley has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and will appear at Manchester magistrates court on Tuesday 28 November 2017."

“At around 1am on Sunday 1 October 2017, police received a report that a woman in her 30s had been sexually assaulted at a music venue on Swan Street in the Northern Quarter.”

Prior to the charges, Langley released a statement referring to his departure from the soap in addition to what appears to be vague reference to his arrest.

"Sadly, I will no longer be working on Coronation Street. Acting on the show has been the fulfilment of a personal dream," he said.

“Playing the role of Todd Grimshaw since I was 17 years old has been a huge part of my life, and an absolute honour. I would like to thank all of my friends who work on the show for their love, friendship and support during this extremely difficult period."

Langley's final scenes will air on Christmas Eve.
