A record number of people are residing in temporary emergency accommodation, according to the Department of Housing figures acquired by RTÉ.

Figures show that 8374 people used emergency accommodation in the month of September this year.

Almost 6000 of these people are located in Dublin.

This is a drastic increase on previous figures.

Over 3000 of these were children, according to RTÉ.

'Month-on-month, we have seen consistent increases in those presenting as homeless with no clear intervention to prevent these people becoming homeless in the first place,' Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) chief executive Anthony Flynn told Today FM.

'This is a National Emergency and needs to be treated as such – the state is failing'

Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy said in a statement: 'Families and individuals continue to present to our emergency accommodation services.'

'There are still 690 families in hotels – while any one family in a hotel or B&B is one too many – this is still significantly down on the high point in March earlier this year, when 871 families were in hotels and B&Bs.'

We'll be honest, if you had told us two years ago that Niall Horan would end up being the most successful member of One Direction we probably would have laughed at the idea – but oh how wrong we were.

With two top 10 singles and a critically acclaimed album under his belt, the Mullingar native has made quite the name for himself as a solo artist.

And while the 24-year-old is enjoying a successful career in the music industry, he admits a little recognition wouldn't go amiss.

During a recent interview on New York City radio station Fresh 102.7's Karen & Jeffrey, Niall jokingly said he would “rip someone's arm off” for a Grammy Award.

“Just to be nominated would be amazing. I've spent so many years watching it. It comes with all the prestige that everyone thinks it does. That would be amazing; a far cry but we'll see what happens.”

The singer, whose debut solo album, Flicker, dropped last Friday recently sold out a night at Dublin's 3Arena, however, a second date was added due to phenomenal demand. Tickets are available here.

So, IT Tallaght might not be known for its massive lecture halls or state of the art facilities, but what it lacks it size it makes up for in character.

Whether it's impromptu drinks in the Metro, or the fun and frolics of Fresher's Week, there are some things that will stick in the mind of graduates long after they've walked through those revolving doors one last time.

The library was cramped, the internet connection was pretty much non-existent and the canteen was overpriced, but hey, it was ours.

Here's just a few things we won't forget any time soon.

1. Getting pretty sick of people making the TIT joke

"Oh, so where do you go to college?"

"IT Tallaght"

"So you go to *pause*… TIT?"

"LOL never heard that one before. Have you ever thought of going into stand-up comedy?"

2. Feeling sorry for the poor souls whose mates dared them to take part in the Fresher's Week games

It's all fun and games until someone ends up permanently damaging their taste buds after taking part in the chicken wing challenge…

Someone get these lads a glass of milk!

3. Heading to the Metro during long breaks

Long breaks, short breaks – or anytime at all really.

Not to mention Messy Mondays…

In fact, we won't even go there.

4. Getting stuck holding the library door open

Deciding to pop in and have a look for that book you're too broke to actually buy, only to get caught up in a mass exodus of students who have has enough study for today.

And nary a 'thank you' between them.

5. Speaking of doors, WHO thought a revolving entrance was a good idea?

"Should I go now or should I wait for the next one?"

The side door was always a safer bet.

6. Saving your coffee stamps for a Venti Starbucks

The caramel latté is all the more satisfying after you've suffered through a full week of lukewarm filter coffee.

7. The length of the ATM queue on grant day

One cash machine between 4,000 students wasn't exactly the greatest idea was it?

8. The distinct lack of colour printers

All that effort you put into making your graphs look fab, and for what? – to print it in black and white?

I don't think so.

9. Don't even get us started on those bloody ramps

It doesn't matter how slow you're going – that coffee in your cup holder is still going to spill everywhere.

10. Missing the bus to the exam hall

"Oh, there it goes."

"See you in August, repeats!"

"Babies get bad press, but our little guys really bring out the best in us. Nobody in the whole world makes us laugh more," Karen Koster laughs fondly as she describes her favourite parts of parenting.

We are beyond excited to get the opportunity to interview the TV3 presenter as she launches the campaign for HB Hazelbrook farm – encouraging families to 'share a little magic' this Autumn.

She is so bubbly we get carried away chatting but eventually get down to the nitty-gritty. We start by asking her about her favourite childhood memories.

"My bother and sister were 10 and 13 when I was born and I completely idolised them, so some of my fondest memories are those times when they were giving me attention and bringing me along to play. We'd go into town with my mum and ride the glass elevator in the Ilac centre and get a treat somewhere – usually ice-cream."

"When I was older my mum took me to visit my older brother in London and we would go see a West End Show. I've such happy memories of all being together – especially at Christmas all curled up on the sofa".

A recent survey by HB Hazelbrook Farm revealed that 3 in 4 Irish parents wish they had more free time to spend with their children. The research also found that 70% of us would like to continue our childhood traditions with our own families.

Karen agrees but adds that these days paring back is really important.

"I see people running from Billy to Bob trying to fit in as much as possible with their children on their days off – to the park, to granny's to music classes…and I'm guilty of trying to do it all too, but sometimes it is really important to just let children enjoy the simple things – to let their imagination peak by just making a den at home or playing make-believe."

"I used to make little coffee stands and travel agencies as a child. It was the best fun! I think these days people are afraid to let their children be 'bored,' but dont' forget that some of our best creativity comes when we have the gift of time."

There are just 14 months between Karen's sons. I asked her if there is anything about parenthood that surprised her?

"I remember sitting on the side of the bath during a particularly tough time with the boys – Finn was in the bath and I was feeding JJ. I couldn't take my eyes off either of them – they both needed me so much, all the time, and at the exact same time and I started thinking 'oh my god, this is really tough' and just then Finn started playing peek-a-boo and making his little brother laugh and it was one of the sweetest things ever."

"I realised then there is a whole dimension of being a parent that you don't expect – that relationship between siblings – that brotherly bond is just beautiful to watch," she added.

Does her label as 'super mum' bother her?

"Not at all – I think we are all super mums! Just the act of keeping it going all the time – having time for work and making dinner and pick-ups and keeping your friends and having some kind of time for yourself while also being a good sister, wife, daughter."

"It is really tough being a mum and trying to balance it all and I think getting through the days with lunches and keeping the house and also raising your children to the best of your ability is a really tough job. I applaud of us mums and dads. We should all pat ourselves on the back."

Another day, another reason to love the ball of sarcastic sunshine that is Chrissy Teigen.

With an Instagram feed full of sweet family photos, and Snapchat stories packed with candid ramblings, anyone that follows the US model on social media will know all about her quick wit and open attitude.

But her latest post might just be our favourite yet.

Taking to Twitter earlier today, Chrissy shared a screenshot of a text she received from her assistant.

In the text, the assistant informs Chrissy of an accidental nip-slip on her Snapchat story and reveals how she had taken it upon herself to delete it.

(Of course, there's nothing wrong with a little nipple display, but it's pretty much an assistant's job to spot these sorts of things.)

The star even included a little video message for all the haters, saying: “I just wanna apologise to everyone I know. I've let my friends down, I've let my family down… And I have nipples. It's not something I'm proud of.”

So brave. So wise.

Bravo, Chrissy.

John Mayer has taken to Twitter this week to celebrate the fact he has been alcohol-free for the past 12 months.

In a move which ignited a reasoned and thoughtful conversation on Twitter, the singer revealed that his decision has made an incredible positive impact on his life.

"One year ago today, I decided to give drinking a break," he wrote in a post which has been liked 48,000 times in just two days.

"A very personal thing for everyone. For me, a constant return on investment," he added.

John explained that his reason for sharing the anniversary is to remind his fans and followers that abstinence is an option for everyone.

"I post this because I want people to know that “that’s enough for now” is on the menu, so to speak," he explained.

John has been inundated with support since the upload, with one person considering the impact the post will have on those who come across it.

"I’d like to think that someone out there is one day away from their 1 year and saw your post today and will now make tomorrow happen!"

"I'd like to think that someone read this and is going to start their 1 year today," added another.

John's post acted as a catalyst for followers to discuss the various ways sobriety effected them, with one writing: "I learned that I didn't need alcohol to cope with my problems or chronic back pain. There are other healthy ways to do that."

"Counselling helps — I'd recommend it. Working out at a gym or going for a walk when you have an urge to drink. It's not easy but worth it," she added.

During the summer, John revealed that alcohol rarely satiated him, telling Rolling Stone: "Drinking is a f*cking con. How much is enough?"

"Every time I drank, I was looking for some sort of regulated amount. It always feels wrong for me. I always feel like I went overboard. ‘I said two, now it's three, now we're at four."

Former Spice Girl, Mel B, claims she was drugged by her estranged husband throughout “much to most” of their 10-year relationship.

It comes after a string of serious allegations with Mel, real name Melanie Brown, having already accused Stephen Belafonte of physical and mental abuse.

She has also claimed he had an affair with the couple's nanny and that he arranged a sham marriage to keep her in the country.

The pair are currently in the midst of a bitter divorce battle in a LA court, after the British-born singer filed for divorce on March 20, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

According to The Independent, one of Stephen's lawyers, Philip Cohen, said: “Miss Brown now takes the position she was drugged by Mr Belafonte throughout the course of the marriage.”

However, Stephen claims that Mel suffered from cocaine and alcohol addiction during the marriage and that these accusations are all part of a smear campaign against him.

The pair, who married in June 2007, have one child together – five-year-old Madison Brown Belafonte.

A trial on the domestic violence allegations has been delayed and will now begin on November 6 ahead of the full divorce proceedings.

After weeks of obstruction by the Trump administration, a 17-year-old undocumented immigrant was finally able to terminate her pregnancy on Wednesday morning.

The girl, known as Jane Doe in the courts, entered the US in September and discovered she was pregnant while in federal custody at a facility for unaccompanied minors in South Texas.

On September 25, she obtained a court order permitting her to undergo the procedure, but federal officials refused to transport her or grant her temporary release.

According to The Independent, her lawyers say government officials had illegally denied her the medical care she was entitled to, and claim that the staff at the shelter she was staying in had taken her to a crisis pregnancy centre to try to discourage her from terminating the pregnancy.

The teen was eventually granted permission to have the procedure after a lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled six-three in favour of the teen.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Brigitte Amiri, a lawyer who argued for the teen in court said: “I'm relieved for Jane Doe, but I'm so incredibly frustrated that we had to go through all of this for what is a very well-settled constitutional right.”

The TV storyline has received a mix of criticism and praise.

'Why is there a gay kid on Disney Channel? Stop trying to normalize it! Children do not need to exposed to that,' said one Twitter user.

However, others have praised the channel for being inclusive in representing the LGBTQ community.

'Disney has been a leader in LGBTQ inclusion and there are so many young people who will be excited to see Cyrus’ story unfold.'
