Yearly Archives: 2017

Last year, Game of Thrones star, Kit Harington, faced huge backlash after he compared the sexism faced by women on a daily basis to the process of men being selected for a role based on their looks.

"I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks," he said in a May 2016 interview with The Sunday Times.

"It's demeaning. Yes, in some ways you could argue I've been employed for a look I have. But there’s a sexism that happens towards men. There’s definitely a sexism in our industry that happens towards women, and there is towards men as well."

Needless to say, some people took issue with the controversial comments, with many pointing out that while objectification may exist for both genders, white male actors will always have the upper hand in Hollywood.

However, one year on, Kit has finally issued an apology for his careless remark.

Speaking to The Guardian, the 30-year-old said: "Sexism against men is not something I should have really said."

"I think what I meant was, being objectified. At that time, I did feel objectified, and now I’ve learned how to control that."

The actor went on to explain how while he remains somewhat uncomfortable with his sex-symbol status, he now realises that it was wrong to equate these feelings to the position of women in society.

“Look, I do think men can get objectified. I do feel I have been objectified in the past, sexually as well, in pieces that have been written about me.”

“Has that made me feel uncomfortable in the past? Yes. Do I think my position is the same as a woman’s in society? No. They’re very different things, and I should have separated them. I was wrong.”

His admission comes at a pivotal time in the entertainment industry as more and more women continue to come forward to share their experience of sexual abuse in light of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Here's hoping Kit's apology will inspire others to examine their own words and actions, and gain a better understanding of how sexism impacts the lives of women on a daily basis.

Following the largest ever study into the safety of the HPV vaccination, researchers in Denmark and Sweden have established that the highly contentious vaccination is not linked with 44 chronic diseases.

Three million women, aged between 18 and 44,  took part in the study which sought to examine the potential dangers associated with the vaccination, and aside from a potential increase in the development of celiac disease, researchers did not identify any other concerns.

"This is the most comprehensive study of HPV vaccination safety in adult women to date, "said lead author Dr Anders Hviid, of the Statens Serum Institut, in Denmark.

"It is not unreasonable to expect different safety concerns in adult women compared with young girls, and our study is an important supplement to the safety studies in young girls,” he added of the research which has been published in the Journal of Internal Medicine.

With a decrease in the number of Irish adolescents receiving the vaccination due to concerns over its safety, the researchers argue the merit of considering the likelihood of pre-existing conditions in those who receive it.

"Unmasking of pre-existing conditions at vaccination visits has been described for adolescents and young adults in the context of quadrivalent HPV vaccination; the vaccination visit triggers a work-up of symptoms that later result in a diagnosis,” the authors wrote.

“Unmasking of an underreported disease such as celiac disease in quadrivalent HPV-vaccinated Danish women is a possible explanation for the increased RR."

In recent months, two Ministers advised the Church to exclude themselves from current medical debate after Phonsie Cullinan, the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, questioned the reliability of the HPV vaccine.

The bishop's remarks were met with consternation by both Health Minister Simon Harris and Independent Alliance Minister of State John Halligan.

Highlighting Bishop Cullinane's lack of medical qualifications, Minister Harris said: “I don’t want to get into a spat with anybody, bishop or no bishop, but at the end of the day the people qualified to give medical advice on vaccinations are doctors and, funnily enough, not bishops.”

With autumn coming to an end, now is the ideal time to make sure your home is ready for the winter, especially your oil tank.

One of the biggest problems with not doing annual checks on your heating system is that you run the risk of it breaking down in the middle of winter, as this is when it is most used.

While oil tanks have a useful life of many years, eventually they will need to be replaced. In fact, you'll need to invest in a new tank or boiler if it is more than 20 years old.

However, we all lead such busy lives, that many of us are guilty of waiting until something happens before it crosses our mind to do a check-up.

And when it comes to your oil tank or boiler, that 'something' tends to be a leak… and you calling a specialist to clean it up!

Because you can't just clean up the mess; an escape of oil requires specialist knowledge and expertise to handle and remedy the problem.

So what should you do if you have an oil spill?

1. If you discover an oil leak or have a spill, you need to deal with it immediately or it could cause a serious pollution problem.

2. Take action: if you can safely stop the flow of oil, do. If there’s room, put a bucket under the leak and close valves or taps.

3. Use the contents of your spill kit, sandbags or earth to soak up the oil if it’s on a hard surface and stop it entering a river, stream, watercourse, and drains or soaking into the ground.

4. Never wash any spilt oil away into drains, a gully or into the ground. Most drains connect to the nearest watercourse and oil can cause serious pollution of rivers, streams and groundwater.

5. Never use detergents to clean up spilt oil; you could cause a worse pollution incident. The detergent itself is a pollutant and mixes oil into the water.

6. Call a specialist. A company like Verde Remediation Services will rapidly respond to any emergency seven days a week. They are the largest oil spill remediation company in Ireland so you know you'll be in safe hands. Click here for more info.

Verde provide unrivalled levels of expertise in every aspect of an oil spill remediation programme with in-house teams of environmental scientists, hydrogeologists, remediation specialists and highly-trained civil works personnel. With offices in Wicklow, Cork, Galway and Mayo covering projects around the country, Verde has built up a first-rate reputation.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have to be one of our favourite couples in Hollywood.

The pair, who have been married for five years and have two children together, have a lighthearted approach to their relationship, and the most recent example of this had us in stitches.

Ryan turned 41 on Monday, and Blake took to Instagram to pay homage to her hubby.

However, rather than posting a loved-up snap, Blake decided that the time was nigh to get revenge on her actor husband after he posted a photo of the pair with Blake cropped out for her birthday.

'Happy Birthday to my amazing wife,' he captioned the pic at the time.

Blake's revenge is the perfect example of a long-running joke.

'Happy Birthday, baby,' Blake captioned the post, alongside a pic of Ryan Gosling beside a cropped out Ryan Reynolds.

Fans were delighted with the couple's jest, and many commented praising their humour.

Yet another example of why Blake and Ryan are complete couple goals.

Harvey Weinstein's former assistant has broken her silence to claim that she too was sexually assaulted by the disgraced Hollywood producer.

According to Sky News, Zelda Perkins previously worked for Miramax productions where she assisted Weinstein in 1998.

She also said that Weinstein asked her to administer massages while he was in underwear.

A new report has today said that the construction of new apartments is not viable.

The development of affordable apartment living structures is more expensive to build than free standing houses.

The Society of Chartered Surveyors analysed the cost of building, and found that apartments will not be the answer to the housing crisis.

Low rise apartments in the Dublin suburbs start from €293,000 to build.

'Height in terms of very high rise or tall buildings isn't really the solution, the higher that you build, the more expensive it costs,' Paul Mitchell, one of the authors of the report said.

'Buildings become less efficient and you have to spend a lot more money on structure.'

This is due to the fact that high rise apartments 'have a more complex structure and require a wider range of mechanical and electrical services, sophisticated facades, basement parking and much more,' reads the report.

However, according to the report one category of apartment building – low rise in the suburbs – could be commercially viable to build, and would be affordable to average earners.

If our time in the Girl Guides taught us anything, it’s to be prepared.

And while we have it nailed when it comes to our supply of plasters on a night out and our collection of chocolate during certain times of the month, there are a few areas of our life which could do with a little work.

Take that oh-so-important Bucket List, for example.

While we may throw the word around with wild abandon, and discuss swimming with dolphins and sourcing cocktails that cost less than a fiver, how many of us consider what the term means in actuality?

Loathe and all as most of us are to contemplate it, there will come a time when we do kick the bucket, and dolphin swimming and cocktail swigging aren’t going to do much for the people we leave behind.

But, hold up! If your toes are already curling with the direction this piece is going, you’re not alone.

In fact, research conducted by My Legacy, a group of over 50 Irish charities, established that only 30 per cent of people living in Ireland have made a will, while just half have engaged with any of the practicalities around preparing for their own death.

On the other hand, more than two thirds of those surveyed have prioritised a visit to their dream destination. Standard, right?

How about making your mark by leaving a legacy gift in your will to a charity you care about?

Eager to remind the public of the importance of their legacy, Darren Kennedy, stylist and TV presenter, and George Hamilton, football pundit are supporting the campaign during My Legacy Week.

Both men have made a legacy donation to a cause they care about and explained why the campaign was important to them.

“I had never really thought about making my will and leaving a legacy – it just wasn’t on my radar,” Darren said. “But when I thought of my family, friends and the causes that are important to me I realised it’s an important thing to do. I left my legacy to the Dog’s Trust.”

“The Dog’s Trust is very important to me as I have had dogs all my life and in hard times they have always been a comfort to me. People at my age don’t really think about making a Will but it is so important as it makes things easier for your loved ones when you’re gone.”

“Leaving a legacy was never on my bucket list, I always wanted to go to Fashion Week like 4% of people surveyed, but it’s something I definitely recommend adding to your bucket list.”

OK so, it’s not something anyone of us like to think about, but whatever is on your bucket list, why not be sure to add a donation to your favourite charity?
