Yearly Archives: 2017

It's nearing the end of the month, which means you're likely broke and desperately attempting to dodge every invite that comes your way, right?

While having next to nothing in the bank account is woeful, and missing out on Saturday Night drinks is sacreliege, we always have Netflix to turn to.

So, if you're planning on having a cosy weekend on the couch, you may as well do it in the company of these Netflix corkers.

Ladies, feast your eyes…

The Day I Met El Chapo

The Day I Met El Chapo is the biographical account of Mexican actress, Kate del Castillo.

The three-part series tells Kate’s side of the story using never-before-seen footage and exclusive details of what led to the infamous meeting between one of the world’s most notorious drug lords, a Hollywood star and one of Mexico’s most famous television actresses.

1922

1922 is based on Stephen King's 131-page story telling of a man's confession of his wife's murder.

The tale is told from from the perspective of Wilfred James, the story's unreliable narrator who admits to killing his wife, Arlette, with his son in Nebraska. But after he buries her body, he finds himself terrorized by rats and, as his life begins to unravel, becomes convinced his wife is haunting him.

One of Us

One of Us explores the opaque world of Hasidic Judaism through a cadre of fascinating characters.

Through unique and intimate access over the span of three years, acclaimed observational filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp, Detropia) delve into the lives of three brave individuals who have recently made the decision to leave the insular ultra-orthodox community at the expense of all else, including relationships with their family members and – in one case – their personal safety.

With a sensitive and compassionate eye, One of Us chronicles the achingly cinematic journey of people in search of a personal freedom that comes only at a very high cost.

Wheelman

Frank Grillo stars as the wheelman, a getaway driver thrust into a high stakes race-to-survive after a bank robbery goes terribly wrong.

With a car full of money and his family on the line, the clock is ticking to figure out who double-crossed him and the only person he can trust – his thirteen-year-old daughter.

All reasons to think fast and drive faster.

In the days that followed the initial allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Quentin Tarantino took to Twitter to tell his followers that he would need to take time off social media in order to process the reports.

"Utterly shocked by the revelations about Harvey. He is a good friend, but if he is guilty, there are issues that are inevitable," the director wrote.

"We need to stand up and support victims of abuse such as the brave and inspiring women who have spoken out."

However, it seems the director was more aware of the movie mogul's conduct than he initially admitted on Twitter – something he addressed during a recent interview with The New York Times.

"I knew enough to do more than I did," the 54-year-old revealed.

Admitting that he received first-hand information on the subject, he continued: "There was more to it than just the normal rumors, the normal gossip. It wasn’t secondhand. I knew he did a couple of these things."

Indeed, Quentin's former girlfriend, Mira Sorvino, once revealed that she had been mistreated by Weinstein – something Quentin didn't pursue because he felt that it wouldn't happen again once Weinstein was aware of their relationship.

Acknowledging that his attitude to the incidents fell massively short, he did attempt to explain how he navigated them, by saying: "What I did was marginalize the incidents,. Anything I say now will sound like a crappy excuse.”

“I chalked it up to a ’50s-’60s era image of a boss chasing a secretary around the desk,” he said. “As if that’s O.K. That’s the egg on my face right now," the director added.

“We allowed it to exist because that’s the way it was,” he said.

Over the course of the last week, Twitter users have been circulating a series of tweets composed by writer Patrick S. Tomlinson, which addresses President Trump's intentions around women's reproductive rights in the United States.

With pro-choice / pro-life discussion intensifying amid the President's recent attempts to halt funding to Planned Parenthood, Patrick decided to add his voice to the conversation by posing a question which he feels stumps most ant-abortionists.

The series of tweets, which presents a 'simple scenario' to his followers has amassed tens of thousands of likes so far, but, unsurprisingly, it hasn't been without its critics.

Patrick begins: "Whenever abortion comes up, I have a question I've been asking for ten years now of the "Life begins at Conception" crowd. In ten years, no one has EVER answered it honestly."

"It's a simple scenario with two outcomes. No one ever wants to pick one, because the correct answer destroys their argument. And there IS a correct answer, which is why the pro-life crowd hates the question," he continued.

"Here it is. You're in a fertility clinic. Why isn't important. The fire alarm goes off. You run for the exit. As you run down this hallway, you hear a child screaming from behind a door. You throw open the door and find a five-year-old child crying for help."

"They're in one corner of the room. In the other corner, you spot a frozen container labelled "1000 Viable Human Embryos." The smoke is rising. You start to choke. You know you can grab one or the other, but not both before you succumb to smoke inhalation and die, saving no one."

Posing a question to the public, he continued: " Do you A) save the child, or B) save the thousand embryos? There is no "C." "C" means you all die. In a decade of arguing with anti-abortion people about the definition of human life, I have never gotten a single straight A or B answer to this question. And I never will."

Providing an insight into his past experience when posing the question,  Patrick explained: "They will never answer honestly, because we all instinctively understand the right answer is "A." A human child is worth more than a thousand embryos. Or ten thousand. Or a million. Because they are not the same, not morally, not ethically, not biologically."

"This question absolutely evicerates their arguments, and their refusal to answer confirms that they know it to be true. No one, anywhere, actually believes an embryo is equivalent to a child. That person does not exist. They are lying to you".(sic)

"They are lying to you to try and evoke an emotional response, a paternal response, using false-equivalency. No one believes life begins at conception. No one believes embryos are babies, or children. Those who claim to are trying to manipulate you so they can control women."

"Don't let them. Use this question to call them out. Reveal them for what they are. Demand they answer your question, and when they don't, slap that big ol' Scarlet P of the Patriarchy on them. The end."

Like most discussions around this highly contentious issue, opinion is divided, with many pouring scorn on the proposed scenario.

"Oh don't be silly. Nobody is asking anybody to kill a child in place of an embryo. They're asking you to allow the embryo become a child," wrote one

Another added: "You are asking a question like Sophie's Choice. Both are life, both are worth saving. I don't see your question as defining when life begins."

When the good folk behind The Harbour Bar's Toastie Festival asked Facebook users to help them pay 'homage to the toastie', we were all ears.

There's little we love more than a perfectly-made toastie, which is why we've earmarked the first weekend in November to indulge our weakness.

Taking place in Bray, Ireland’s first Toastie Festival will cater to every toastie-lover's need, with talk of ham and cheese toasties, well-earned pints, and Cliff Walks.

"Throughout the festival there will be the classic ham and cheese offering alongside some more adventurous fillings to try, and match with whatever your tipple. Plus free tea top ups too," reads the festival's official Facebook event page.

"Visitors can snag a seat by one of the Harbour Bar’s roaring fires or cosy up out front for outside service. All welcome, dogs too."

Ladies, pull up a seat and prepare to tuck in.

A man, who had been sleeping rough in Dublin's city centre, died in the early hours of this morning.

Homeless charity workers raised the alarm after realising the individual had not moved position over the course of three hours.

A Garda spokesman confirmed the incident today, saying: "Gardaí are investigating the sudden death of a man at Adair Lane, Dublin 2."

"He is yet to be identified. The incident is not being treated as suspicious at this time."

Speaking to The Independent, Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke, gave an insight into the tragic incident.

"Crews were going around checking on rough sleepers at around 11pm and one of the volunteers said they saw this man lying there at around 11pm and they thought he was asleep," he explained.

"When he came back at 2am he noticed that the man was lying in the exact same position, so he went to take a pulse and he couldn't."

"They called an ambulance but he was pronounced dead and the doctors said that the rough sleeper would have been dead for a few hours before he was found."

With talk of Storm Brian increasing with every passing day, it's no surprise most of us are paying even closer attention to the weather forecast than usual.

On both Twitter and their official website, Met Éireann are warning the public of the potential for localised flooding in many areas.

"This afternoon will be wet countrywide with the rain turning heavy and persistent in many areas and some local flooding likely," reads the forecast for tonight.

"Winds will be light for much of the day but will become strong around Western and Southern coasts."

Friday doesn't sound much more promising, with forecasters anticipating: "Mist and fog patches will clear quickly tomorrow with sunny spells for a time in the morning."

"But cloud will gradually thicken with rain developing in the West and South by midday and spreading to the rest of the country in the afternoon."

On Saturday we should expect  'a wet and windy day with strong and gusty westerly winds and heavy squally showers, with highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees and feeling cold in the wind and rain'.
