Move over Lord Sugar!

Nestlé Ireland staff are gearing up to compete in a fierce Shop Wars competition in a drive to raise money for Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI).

Two teams will take over and run two DSI charity shops in Dublin for one day this Friday 13th October with the team raising the most money in their shop crowned the winner. Besides seeking to increase average sales at the shops, Nestlé will also match the funds raised by winning team – all benefitting DSI.

The charity shop challenge involves two DSI shops, one in the heart of Dublin at the historic GPO and the other in the Dublin suburb, Kimmage.  Teams have devised lots of activity to attract customers including raffles, sweet treats and new stock.

People are being encouraged to come along between 9am-5pm to the local DSI store in Kimmage or the GPO Arcade to get a great bargain and support DSI. All are welcome.

Over 30 colleagues from across Nestlé Ireland’s business are involved using their marketing, in-store activation and shopper insight skills in an effort to get customers into the stores to purchase the items on sale.

The two teams have pulled out all the stops with preparations underway for weeks to make the initiative a huge success – with Team GPO even arranging outdoor advertising to draw attention to the special offers in their shop. Both teams have devised plans for in-store activities along with promoting the activities across their personal social media channels to raise awareness and encourage the public to get behind their team.

The Team Kimmage’s shop event is focused on Halloween with lots tricks and treats up their sleeve, playing on the spookiness of Friday 13th. Customers who donate €2 instore will be in with the chance of winning prizes such as; Sleeping Beauty panto family tickets, a brand new coffee machine, Life Style Sports vouchers and of course delicious Nestlé chocolate, sweets  and coffee.

To top it all off the team plan to have a special appearance from Big Bird to wow shoppers and will have an array of some of the scariest Halloween costumes for kids and adults this spooky season.

Team GPO team will be aiming to race to raise cash by offering pre-Christmas bargains. With the stock decked out for Christmas it offers lots of new stocking fillers to get ahead of the shopping rush.

Other goodies up for grabs will include; lots of shopping vouchers, gift hampers, plus sweet treats with each purchase made in store on Friday. The GPO team will also have a surprise celebrity guest appearance on the day!

Andrew Shaw, Country Business Manager, Nestlé Ireland (Team GPO) said; “Over the past number of weeks the two teams have been planning and scheming how to win the challenge. It has created a healthy competitive spirit as each team seeks to be the winner to raise the most funds for Down Syndrome Ireland.

I’m sure the atmosphere in both shops will be electric on the day with spot prizes, raffles, goodie bags, coffee and confectionery along with a guest appearance from Big Bird promised, being used to drive footfall into the shops! The passion and commitment by colleagues will hopefully raise significant funds for DSI.”

Nestlé’s employees in Ireland have committed to raise €70,000 for Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) in a two year staff Charity of the Year partnership announced earlier this year, which is absolutely amazing.

The partnership will involve over 700 employees from Nestlé Ireland, Citywest and Nestlé's Wyeth Nutrition infant formula plant in Askeaton, Co. Limerick raising funds to benefit the services and supports provided by DSI for families with Down syndrome.

DSI supports over 3,500 members across Ireland through its specialist services in healthcare, education, early development, speech and language therapy and independence.

The Master of the Rotunda, Dr Fergal Malone, yesterday revealed that an Irish woman died after she travelled to the UK to access abortion services in recent years.

It's understood that the unnamed women died after experiencing complications on her flight home – a tragedy which could have potentially been prevented should the woman have been able to access the procedure, and the associated aftercare, in Ireland.

Dr Malone made the revelation during his address to the Oireachtas Committee, yesterday evening.

"Forcing patients to travel between two jurisdiction will inevitably increase the risks to mothers' physical health and well-being," he said.

“Risks associated with travelling for pregnancy termination include infection or haemorrhage which has tragically resulted in the death of one of our patients when travelling to the United Kingdom.”

He also touched on some of the other challenges facing women who are forced to travel including, cost, lask of support and the “significant distress associated with leaving their baby’s remains in another country”.

The Oireachtas Committee is reviewing the recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly and are due to report by the end of the year, when the government will begin to work on the wording of the referendum.

Correct us if we're wrong, but we were under the impression that avocados were some kind of miracle food, loaded with nutrients and a myriad of health benefits – or at least that's what we've been led to believe.

After all, an entire generation can't be wrong, can they?

Well, it seems that even though the humble avocado is a pretty healthy addition to any diet, there's always room for improvement.

Spanish food company, Isla Bonita, have gone and created The Avocado Light.

That's right, this diet avocado (??) is said to ripen faster, oxidise slower, and contains 30 per cent less fat than its non-diet counterpart.

However, that's not to say that regular avocados are inherently bad for you, in fact their high monosaturated fat content actually helps to lower bad cholesterol – but of course, as with all good things, moderation is key.

If you are interested in trying this somewhat bizarre creation, you may have to wait a while – Isla Bonita only have plans to distribute in Spain for the time being.

Here at SHEmazing HQ, it goes without saying that we are seriously against animal cruelty.

For this reason, we were delighted to hear that one of the most coveted designer brands was eradicating real fur from its collections.

Gucci, which has to be the most popular label of 2017, is ditching real fur for good.

A post shared by Kleo (@kleoklod) on

Many of Gucci's most iconic looks, from the Princetown loafer to their selection of €38,000 mink coats, carry animal furs, so this is a change for the brand.

Going fur-free is part of Gucci's new commitment to become more sustainable and friendly to the earth.

'Together, by committing to a culture of purpose, taking responsibility and encouraging respect, inclusivity, and empowerment, we want to create the necessary conditions for a progressive approach to sustainability,' said President and CEO Marco Bizzarri.

'Being socially responsible is one of Gucci's core values, and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals.'

Gucci intends to be totally fur-free in 2018.

Popular culture has an obsession with sharks, whether it's Shark Week on the Discovery Channel or Katy Perry's finned backing dancers at the Superbowl.

While we may be adapted to seeing them on screens, a sighting of one in Ireland is pretty rare.

One clip is doing the rounds on Facebook, which shows a shark slithering through the waters of the Skerries harbour.

The clip is currently going viral, with thousands of views.

A post shared by FrogMan (@frogman_seal) on

The shark in the clip is thought to be a basking shark.

Sailing coach Kerri-Ann Boylan, who captured the clip, told Dublin Live:

'As soon as I saw we all stopped for a minute and reacted to it and had a good gawk, luckily I was quick enough with my phone to get the video.

'It was in about two feet of water just off the slipway in Skerries harbour.'

'I’ve always been told growing up that basking sharks where harmless and it looked to be a baby one from what I’m told.'

Batten down the hatches, there's a storm a brewin'.

Hurricane Ophelia is set to pay Ireland a visit next week, after it sweeps across the Atlantic.

The storm is being noted for it's unusual pathway, pushing past Spain and Portugal and coming to land in the UK and Ireland.

It is expected to hit Irish shores sometime on Monday.

Before the tropical storm lands, it is predicted to push a band of warm air towards us first.

This could lead to high temperatures across the weekend.

While Ophelia is currently a dangerous storm, by the time it lands, the high winds should have subsided.

According to Met Éireann:

'Current indications suggest a stormy day for Monday is possible, but uncertainty on the detail remains, due to the nature of the track of the Atlantic storm system.'

'The situation will be monitored throughout the weekend but at the moment it looks like it will be a windy day with further spells of rain.'

Ryanair has been in difficulty in recent months, after hundreds of thousands of passengers were impacted by flight cancellations.

Now, the airline is offering it's pilots a financial incentive to remain with the budget flight provider.

The airline has offered its pilots in Stansted a pay and pensions increase of up to €27,000.

Pilots could see increases of 22pc in their pensions.

This is coupled with an increase of up to 16pc in their take-home pay.

This offer is not without condition – the increase will only remain on the table if pilots agree to negotiate directly with the airline, without the input of worker's unions.

The increases could also be delayed if they are not accepted soon.

If they are accepted, the pay bumps could come into effect as early as November.

At least one woman has died while flying home from the UK due to complications arising from an abortion she had there, according to a report by The Irish Times.

Professor Fergal Malone, master of the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, told the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment about the incident.

'We are aware of at least one of our patients from Ireland who died following a complication from a surgical termination of pregnancy while travelling between Ireland and a centre abroad.'

'Forcing patients to travel between two jurisdictions, particularly when dealing with travel between islands, will inevitably increase the risks to mothers’ physical health and wellbeing,' he said.

It was also suggested at the meeting that Irish women are risking their lives and health by inducing their own abortions when they cannot access the suitable care they need.

Dr Abigail Aiken presented a number of methods used by women, as gathered from interviews conducted using the Women on Web website.

'These include coat hangers, starvation, high doses of vitamin C, strenuous exercise, large quantities of alcohol, scalding water, drinking bleach, throwing themselves down stairs,' she said, according to The Irish Times.

The Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment has also been told that the option of replacing the 8th Amendment with a law which allows abortion in cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormalities will still endanger the lives of women.

All of the options to be considered by the committee are being vetted by barrister Nuala Butler.

The advice on the option of abortion in cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality has been called 'likely to prove very difficult' due to the issue of establishing evidence of these conditions.

Butler told the committee that only a repeal of the amendment would give 'a degree of immediate legal certainty' to the issue in the short term.

New allegations have been made against Ben Affleck, after he apologised for groping actress Hilarie Burton in 2003.

Hilarie criticised the actor after he posted an extensive statement condemning the actions of Harvey Weinstein

One Twitter user reminded the actor that he 'grabbed Hilarie Burton’s breasts on TRL once. Everyone forgot though.'

The actress then replied that she 'didn't forget,' prompting the actor's apology.

Makeup artist Annmarie Tendler has taken to Twitter to allege that she too is a victim of unwanted groping from Affleck.

In a series of tweets, she claims that the actor touched her without consent.

'I would also love to get an apology from Ben Affleck who grabbed my ass at a Golden Globes party in 2014.'

'He walked by me, cupped my butt and pressed his finger into my crack.'

'I guess he tried to play it like he was politely moving me out of the way and oops touched my butt instead of my lower back?'

'Like most women in these situations I didn't say anything but I have thought a lot about what I'd say if I ever saw him again,' she said.
