Leo Varadkar has announced that in his first year as Taoiseach, Ireland will balance its books in the 2018 budget.

There are a number of expected developments for next year's budget, which will be announced this afternoon.

Significant increases in spending on schools, transport and housing are due to be revealed.

There will also be more spent on the public sector, which will mean the possibility of an increase in nurses, Gardaí and teachers.

It has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected that those on social welfare will see an increase in their payments by €5 per week.

It is not known when exactly this increase will come into effect.

It is also expected that a sugar tax will be introduced to curb our consumption of fizzy drinks.

The price of cigarettes is also set to increase.

In recent times, the 'bare ankle' has become common place in the smart-casual stylings of trend-savvy individuals.

The sockless look is rocked by both men and women alike, and with countless celebrities jumping on board, it's a fashion statement that isn't going anywhere fast.

However, an advisory from the College of Podiatry may prompt you to rethink your choice of footwear.

Experts warn that wearing shoes without socks will increase your chances of getting athlete's foot.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, podiatrist Emma Stevenson, explained the health risks associated with the popular fashion statement.

It seems that it all comes down to the amount of sweat produced by the feet (approximately half a pint per day!!), and the fact that without socks, there is nothing there to soak up all the moisture.

“On average your feet will sweat half a pint a day; that's a lot to be pouring out straight into your shoe without it being absorbed by a sock,” she said.

“Many shoes that are available on the high street today may have leather uppers but are lined in synthetic material, which is not breathable. If the lining is not breathable then moisture, heat and bacteria will all be trapped inside the shoe.”

Gross, we know.

But hey, there are steps you can take to prevent this kind of build-up from happening

Obviously, the first option is to start wearing socks everyday, but if you reeeally can't cant bare the thought of saying bye-bye to your go-to style, Emma recommends airing your shoes for a least 48 hours before wearing them again.

You can also spray you feet with underarm antiperspirant, use tea bags to absorb the extra moisture, and wash and dry feet thoroughly after going sockless.

As Hollywood couples go, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are among our favourites.

And one of the reasons we adore them so much is because they don't pretend to be perfect.

From disclosing she sometimes finds marriage difficult to revealing that she regularly attends couple's therapy with Dax, Kristin refuses to sugarcoat the reality of her relationship for the press and public.

And recently, she went one step further by admitting she struggles with the concept of monogamy.

"I'm quite positive we are not meant to be monogamous. It's difficult, and it requires a lot of attention, vulnerability, and openness," she said during an interview with Men's Journal.

Elaborating on this 'openness', Kristen explains that Dax is more than happy to speak up when it comes to what he needs of their four-year marriage.

Kristen celebrates this trait as she believes open communication prevents the possibility of infidelity.

"He's very open about what he needs to stay satisfied in our relationship, because if one partner isn't satisfied, you just kiss it goodbye; somebody's going to stray," she argued.

"He's very direct about his emotions and I'm grateful for that because it lets me in on the way he thinks as far as tending to our marriage— when we should go to therapy, when we have to be better at intimacy, all those things in order to meet each other's needs."

Kristen and Dax, who share two children together, have been together since 2007.

Bad news for anxious flyers – scientists have predicted that serious flight turbulence will increase threefold by 2050.

Researchers at the University of Reading believe climate change is to blame for the dramatic increase.

The group tested their theory by using supercomputer simulations and found that popular flight paths will be the worst affected with turbulence over the North Atlantic set to rise by 180 per cent, Europe 160 per cent and North America 110 per cent.

The type of turbulence researcher looked at (clear air turbulence) does not threaten to bring down planes – though it can cause injury to passengers and crew.

Professor Paul Williams, the study's lead researcher, said: “This problem is only going to worsen as the climate continues to change.

“Our study highlights the need to develop improved turbulence forecasts, which could reduce the risk of injuries to passengers and lower the cost of turbulence to airlines.”

What's more, the cost of flying is expected to increase as a result of climate change, with transatlantic flights expected to take longer due to changes in the temperature-controlled plane mechanisms.

So basically, get all your travelling out of the way now, because we are all probably going to be too poor and scared to do it in a few years.

At this stage, most of us are aware of the adverse effects excess sugar consumption can have on our health, and while we may have great intentions to cut back, we always end up coming back for more.

So, what is it that makes the habit so damn hard to kick?

Well, according to researchers, sugar can be as addictive as cocaine, and they even suggest the sweet stuff should be considered a 'gateway drug'.

A recent study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, has shown that the consumption of added sugars can produce drug-like effects such as “bingeing, craving, tolerance, and withdrawal.”

The study's authors wrote: “Consuming sugar produces effects similar to that of cocaine, altering mood, possibly through its ability to induce reward and pleasure, leading to the seeking out of sugar.”

However, while these results might seem alarming to the sweet-lovers among us, other scientists have dismissed the research as simply “absurd.”

According to Indy100.com, Tom Sanders, emeritus professor of nutrition and dietetics at King’s College London, told The Guardian:

“While it is true that a liking for sweet things can be habit-forming it is not addictive like opiates or cocaine. Individuals do not get withdrawal symptoms when they cut sugar intake.”

So basically, while we could all benefit from having less of the sweet stuff in our lives, it doesn't look like we'll be checking ourselves into sugar rehabilitation programs any time soon.

Remember the last time you found yourself enduring a stilted conversation with a fellow guest at the wedding of mutual friends?

While the conversation itself may have been excruciatingly boring, it's pretty likely you understood what the other person was talking about, right?

The same can't always be said when you place an Irish person among a gaggle of Americans as one pair of newlyweds realised when they began planning their wedding.

Fearing that banter may be limited due to a 'language barrier', Patricia from Tipperary and Kyle from New York decided to compile a handy guide for guests which provides translations of  standard Irish phrases.

From 'what's the craic' to 'stop acting the maggot', Patricia and Kyle left no linguistic stone unturned as they prepped their guests for the celebrations ahead.

Uploaded to Imgur last night. here is the full list.

Following a spate of sexual assaults at Swedish music festival, Bravalla, earlier this year,  Swedish radio presenter and comedian Emma Knyckare called for the establishment of a female-only rock festival.

Sharing her idea on Twitter in July, she wrote: "What do you think about putting together a really cool festival where only non-men are welcome, that we'll run until ALL men have learned how to behave themselves?"

After receiving support from social media users, the DJ insisted that plans would be put in place, writing: "Sweden's first man-free rock festival will see the light next summer."

And now it's official.

Following a crowdfunding campaign, which raised tens of thousands of euro, it has been confirmed that Statement festival will go ahead next year.

Explaining the mission on the Kickstarter page, those behind its creation wrote: "At music festivals, everyone should feel safe. This sounds obvious, right? Still, year after year the music festivals around the world has shown us the opposite."

"Statement Festival wants to change this and in the summer of 2018, we will arrange the world’s most awesome music festival – without cis- men."

The new festival will allow entry to cis women, trans women and those who identify as non-binary.
