Lent is coinciding with Valentine's Day this year, so we're all giving up our boyfriends and girlfriends, obviously.

Just kidding –  while Lent may seem like and outdated religious practice to many, it's an excellent opportunity to take the time to start something you've always wanted to do, whether that's starting to learn a new language or finally joining that yoga class.

It's also a time for trying to break old vices, be that smoking, over-heat processing our hair or texting back f*ckboys.

Here's what we're giving up and taking on this Lent at SHEmazing HQ:

'Asides from the fact that I'm giving up all jellies (not chocolate, because otherwise, what's the point of life really?), I am going to try give up worrying so much.'

'I was born a worrier. I worry about everything – things that happened, things that happened yesterday, things that haven't happened yet – it's exhausting; I'm exhausted from it.'

'Self-care usually makes me roll my eyes but it's nice to practice what you preach every now and again. I always tell others never to stress and it'd be nice if I could give myself a bit of a break in the process.' – Jennifer McShane, Mummy Pages Editor

'I'm gonna give up pasta, and I will probably live to regret it.'

'I eat pasta at LEAST four times a week, so it'll be some challenge.' – Rebecca O'Keefe, SHEmazing Editor

'I tend not to even entertain the idea self deprivation as "I can resist anything but temptation" (nice one Oscar Wilde) so instead I plan on getting up off my obnoxiously comfortable sofa, fling open the curtains and embrace the outside world.'

'Be it weekend jaunts up hills or rambles through woods or just having a child and technology free hour to myself to sip coffee and embrace my inner flâneur.' – Kate Dwyer, Graphic Designer at Sheology Digital

'I'm planning on taking up something, rather than giving something else up. Being cruelty free is really important to me, be it in my diet or in beauty products.'

'I've been slowly trying to transition to veganism for a few months now, and I think Lent is the perfect excuse to start being really conscious about the choices I make when it comes to buying foods that use animal by-products.

I'd love to be eating completely vegan by the end of the forty days of Lent, so here's to hoping.' – Sarah Magliocco, journalist at SHEmazing.

'Right, so I'm giving up clutter.'

'My aim is to throw out/re-purpose/give away something every day for lent. Hopefully it'll encourage me to do that massive clear-out I've been telling myself I needed to do for ages.'

'Simplifying for 2018.' – Katie Meegan, journalist at Magic Mum

'I'm making a new habit of not partaking in unnecessary spending.'

'Sure, fancy coffees and over-priced brunch dates are great, but I'd rather save my pennies and splurge on a weekend away.'

'Madrid is calling, and it sounds a lot better than overpriced eggs benedict.' – Lauren Nolan, journalist at SHEmazing

Time and time again, we find ourselves scrolling through Spotify looking for our favourite lady jams.

It's time consuming and kind of annoying – so we decided to do something about it!

We have set ourselves up on Spotify, and created the grooviest playlist ever (think all the best in 90s pop, plus Dua Lipa and the gals).

Currently, we have about 40 songs on it, but we are so open to suggestions. Have a song you love? Let us know, and sure we'll add it on for you.

We're also going to add 5 songs to the playlist every week, and we'll keep you updated.

Have a listen, and let us know what you think.

I had read a few interesting articles about how good it can be for the mind and soul to take a break from social media to re-balance and recharge if you've been feeling a little down.

I follow so many amazing bloggers and just amazing people in general on Instagram, Snapchat etc. and seeing what they were up to always made me a little insecure that I wasn't living my 'best life' like my favourite influencer was on her free, sponsored trip to Bali.

Of course seeing hot dogs or legs pictures beside an azure pool with palm trees in the background is never going to do much for the mood when you're trudging off to work in the rain at 7am.

So, last year, I decided that a good social media purge was what I needed, and what better time to start than Lent.

While I did feel creatively recharged after, I also noticed so many funny little subtlety's about our social media obsessed culture around me while I was sans-Snapchat.

Like there's nothing quite so strange as sitting at the head of a lunch table on a Monday afternoon looking down at the crowns of four other peoples heads all bent towards the LED screens of their smartphones.

There was something almost religious and reverent about their bowed heads, faces illuminated by the familiar glow of a screen.

Later in the week I was going for a little run, which rarely happens, and so I felt the urge to Snapchat this major event.

I mean, did you even exercise if you don't take the perfect post-workout gym selfie?

And was my Sunday brunch even nice if I didn't share a picture of it on Instagram? Why do I need to let people know that I'm enjoying a weekend afternoon with great food and even greater friends?

Is it to rub it in other peoples faces, that I, a 22-year-old-woman, have in fact got a social life or does it stem from a place of insecurity?

Obviously sharing a brunch picture of a particularly aesthetically pleasing meal isn't a sin, and I will definitely be guilty of it again, but I guess taking a social media break makes you consider your motives.

And this sunset. Why did I feel the need to share it in a digitally manipulable two-dimensional square, can I not just keep it as a memoir for myself?

Overall I felt better about myself as a person by abandoning the like button for a while. I thought less about the imperfections I feel my life has because I wasn't so constantly saturated with images of digitally-altered models and bloggers every time I slid open my lock screen.

No longer did I compare my very un-photogenic pesto pasta dinner to someone else's Michelin starred meal, and enjoyed my Friday night in bed watching Charmed without feeling the FOMO caused by incessant Instagram stories of nights out happening across the country.

So, what's the best way to dump your social media addiction for a while and de-clutter your mood? Well, here's how I did it.

First I popped all of my existing social media apps into a folder marked 'Out Of Bounds' so that even if I slipped and automatically went to check Facebook or Snapchat, I would see the folder name and remember.

Then I went to my notification settings and turned off everything social media related. Simples.

So maybe try purging yourself of social media for a bit. Here's some reasons why you should try:

  • You will be more productive without the social media distractions.
  • You could feel better about yourself and heighten you self esteem without the constant barrage of pretty much unachievable perfection that saturates much of Instagram
  • You will be more creative and encourage more independent thoughts as you move away from being influenced by what other people are doing.

Once I had returned to social media, blinking blindly in the glossy glow of Instagram, I began to unfollow any accounts which weren't contributing to my happiness.

Anyone who made me feel insecure or just contributed nothing of substance, aesthetically or otherwise, was devoid of my follow.

It's almost impossible to avoid social media forever in modern culture, but it is possible to control your pool of influence, and remove those who bring nothing of substance to your feed.

Often, we follow someone and if we dislike their content, we just stop seeing it on our feeds as we don't interact with it – but the power of actually using that 'unfollow' option is huge.

So, if you can't tear yourself away from social media entirely, make sue you curate the content you see every day – it could seriously make a difference on that 7am commute when you're seeing relatable, positive images instead of completely unattainable ones.

The internet might be overflowing with websites and apps dedicated to helping you find love online, but it looks like some of the more traditional forms of social media have also found success when it comes to playing match-maker.

Thousands of couples are celebrating online love stories using the hashtag #WeMetOnTwitter – and one particular tale of two of cities really pulled on our heart strings.

When Lili met Johnny for the first time on Twitter, she lived in Paris and he lived in Belfast, however the pair formed an immediate bond thanks to their shared love for football and Paris Saint Germain.

When Johnny’s favourite footballer Yohan Cabaye left Newcastle, the club Johnny supports, for PSG he began to search for PSG related accounts tweeting in English to be able to follow his favourite player. Parisian Lili is passionate about PSG and after finding her account the two began chatting.

The focus of their conversations soon moved beyond the realms of football teams and player politics and before long, a little romance had started to blossom.

The couple chatted on Twitter for six months before they finally made arrangements to meet in Paris – an experience which Lili admitted was a bit strange for the first 10 minutes because she didn't know if she should hug or kiss him.

After the awkward first meeting was out of the way, the pair embarked on a two-year long-distance relationship, before Lili finally took the plunge and moved to Belfast in January 2016.

They have no exact plans for the future but do want to start a family. “We’ll just take things as they come but we’re in it for the long haul,” they said.

Now, if that doesn't warm the cockles of your cynical little hearts, we don't know what will.

We bloody love a little weekend away every now and then (we wish we could afford to go away every weekend tbh, but alas, broke).

Anyway, if you are planning to hop off to a gorgeous European city – Edinburgh should be at the TOP of your list.

I love Paris, Berlin and all those other brilliant cities, but for some reason, Edinburgh is number one in my heart.

The people are amazing, the architecture is gorge, and the bars are CLASS.

Seriously, I am yet to meet a person who visited Edinburgh and didn't fall in love.

So, I decided to do up a wee list of my favourite bars in the Scottish capital – that you simply need to try.

Also, if you have any recommendations, send the my way !

1. Panda & Sons

Best for: a Long Island iced tea.

Panda & Sons opened in November 2013 by Panda and his family. The foundation the bar was built on was to create a place where all ages and all people would feel welcome whether it would be for one of their deliciously creative cocktails, wide range of craft beers or their gloriously extensive wine list.

They are a hidden bar fusing the classic Prohibition style Speakeasy and a nod to the Vintage style Barbershop. All we can say is that if you find a Barbershop with some foreign currency you have made it to the Libation Destination!

2. The Albanach

Best for: a whisky on the rocks.

Loved by locals and office workers just as much as tourists, The Albanach is a classy bar that puts equal emphasis on food and drink. You won't be able to miss the 220 malt whiskies behind the long central bar, or the Belhaven beer, nor resist the contemporary Scottish menu with its pub favourites and local specialities. It's a great chance to get a taste of Highland hospitality right on the Royal Mile, with friendly staff who'll introduce you to the best of what Scotland has to offer.

3. Monteiths

Best for: an Espresso martini.

The bar team at Monteiths pride themselves upon creating innovative and interesting cocktails using the best products available. The carefully curated cocktail list features plenty of classic drinks alongside some new creations that have been designed in-house. There’s also a selection of fantastic wines sourced from across the globe; you’ll find an eclectic mix of well-known varietals, unusual grapes and rare vintages. If beer is your tipple, then you're in luck – Monteiths also have a regularly changing selection of craft brews from Scotland and further afield.

4. Bramble

Best for: a G&T.

This hidden cocktail bar has now firmly established itself as one of the best in Edinburgh (and one of the best in the World, FYI). Its reputation has only grown over the years and the original cocktails are rightly regarded for their quality and creativity – they're seriously delish. The décor is understated, all brick and dim light (romantic) and the drink menus are bound inside the covers of old books. Despite its popularity, Bramble is relatively intimate mid-week, but it can get busy on weekends.

5. The Devil's Advocate

Best for: 'Cask to Cup' cocktail.

The Devil’s Advocate is a bar and restaurant situated in the historical and atmospheric Old Town of Edinburgh, in an old Victorian pump house hidden away in Advocates Close.

Featuring a mezzanine dining area and a 400 strong whisky shelf, the menu boasts seasonal and Scottish ingredients that change monthly.

*Disclaimer: Mild spoilers ahead*

Based on true events, and portrayed by the actual people that lived them, Clint Eastwood's latest cinematic release, The 15:17 to Paris, tells the the terrifying story of three American backpackers who, with the help of other passengers, stopped a terrorist in his tracks.

Determined to find his purpose in life, the film follows the story of Spencer Stone, who along with his two best friends, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos, mature from trouble-making school boys to courageous young soldiers.

What is, on paper, a hugely dramatic and inspiring story – the film unfortunately fails to capitalise on the rich plot right from the get-go.

The first half of the feature is largely based around the boy's developing friendship and childhood obsession with the military, and while a little bit of background is always necessary to set the scene, as a viewer I couldn't help but feel my attention start to drift slightly after the first 40 minutes.

However, I was quickly reeled back in as the story jumped a number of years, with the now young adults, facing a cross-roads in their lives.

At this stage, the three real-life heroes settle into their debut acting roles, and while there are moments when their inexperience shines through, it is that blatant authenticity that helps to lift the film to new levels.

As life takes them in different directions, the friends deicide to reunite for a backpacking trip across Europe.

After drinking, partying and sight-seeing their way across Italy and Germany, the young men plan to finish the trip in Paris and board a high-speed train departing form Berlin's Central Station.

Without giving too much away, this is the moment the entire plot has been building up to.

Faced with a dramatic and frightening series of events, the young backpackers must, without thought or hesitation, put their lives at risk to save some 500 passengers on board.

Despite a disappointing first half, The 15:17 to Paris manages to pick itself up in the nick of time.

Honest, emotional and completely enthralling in moments, Clint Eastwood proves he's still got something left to give with this latest release.

Our rating – 3.5 stars!

Irish rents have reached a new all-time high according to the latest report from property website Daft.ie.

Figures show that prices across the country rose by an average of 10.4 per cent last year, with the average Dublin rent now €380 higher than the previous Celtic Tiger peak.

The biggest increases were seen in Limerick and Galway, with rents rising by 14.8 per cent and 12.4 per cent respectively.

A lack of suitable properties is largely to blame for the spiralling costs, with just 3,143 units available to rent nationwide as of February 1 this year.

This is the lowest figure ever recorded since the report started in 2006.

Economist at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft report, Ronán Lyons said: "2017 marks the fourth consecutive year of double-digit gains in rents nationwide.

"The underlying pressure for rising rents remains due to a chronic shortage of available rental accommodation, at a time of strong demand."

Speaking about the report, a spokesperson for the Simon Communities in Ireland said the latest figures show that the Government's efforts to cap rent in so-called pressure zones, weren't working.

“Rent Pressure Zones and other measures cannot work without proper monitoring and enforcement by the Residential Tenancies Board," they said.

“Tenants cannot be expected to ‘police’ this private market when they are clearly at such a huge disadvantage with continuously diminishing supply and rising prices".

Meanwhile, the Social Democrats co-leader, Catherine Murphy, called on the Government to immediately link rents to the Consumer Price Index until sufficient housing is made available.

Is it just us, or does it feel like Valentine's Day crept up on us out of nowhere this year?

January felt like the month that would never end and now all of a sudden we're in the middle of February with not a second thought given to how we're going to spend the most romantic day of the year.

Sure, shops have been full of heart shaped chocolates and cheesy cards for weeks now, but in the typical 'ah sure, it'll be grand' fashion, we've failed to put any solid plans in place.

But never fear, we've put together a list of cute date ideas that require little to no preparation. Your partner will feel extra special without ever having to know that you almost forgot – you're welcome!

1. Take a stroll around Pheonix park

Or any park for that matter.

After spending most of winter cuddled up indoors, it's about time we make the most of that tiny wee stretch in the evening.

Sure, it's going to be absolutely baltic out, but at least you can bond over your shared hatred of the Irish winter.

2. At home spa day

Let's set the scene.

A steamy hot bubble bath, scented candles and as much chocolate and vino as your heart desires.

Take turns giving massages or apply face masks and settle in for a night of pure relaxation.

3. Game night

Dial up the cheese factor with a personalised game of Scrabble.

The rules are simple – the only words that count are the ones that fit into your chosen theme e.g. words that have meaning to your relationship/ dirty words/  made-up words – you get the picture.

4. Romantic breakfast before work

Given that Valentines' Day falls on a Wednesday this year, it's likely that most people will hold off celebrations until the weekend rolls around.

However, if you do want to mark the occasion in some shape or form, why not get up early and treat your partner to a gourmet breakfast.

Cook at home, or head to your favourite café – there's nothing like a little romance to put a pep in your step before work.

5. Hit up your local arcade

You'd be surprised what effect a healthy dose of competition could have on your love life.

Challenge your partner to an intense game of air hockey or make a show of yourself  on the dance machine – you might not be crowned the new 'Pinball Wizard' but you'll have a gas time trying.

Genuinely, there is nothing better than a good gig.

A few drinks, all your mates, and brilliant live music – pure heaven in our book.

Anyway, with that in mind, we've decided to keep you lovely ladies in the know, with a new gig guide each week.

Without further adieu, here are the concerts on across the country this week (and weekend, naturally!)

Paul Weller, The Olympia, Tuesday 13th February.

2017, marks the 40th anniversary of Paul Weller’s first album, “In The City”, which he released with The Jam in May 1977. For most artists such a landmark would be greeted with extensive retrospective celebrations: lavish reissues and all that jazz. But Paul Weller is not like most artists, instead releasing a new studio album, because releasing new albums is what Paul Weller does. Always moving forwards, almost clinically averse to nostalgia or checking his progress in the rear-view mirror.

And so, continuing his never-ending creative peak, Paul Weller releases his eagerly awaited 13th studio album “A Kind Revolution”, out now on Parlophone Records.

There are still a few tickets left for this gig, but act fast.

Jake Bugg, Whelans, Thursday 15th February.

Following the release of Jake Bugg stunning new album ‘Hearts That Strain’, he announced a acoustic show at Whelans on Thursday, 15th February.  Tickets are actually sold out, HOWEVER, there are still some available on seat wave if you fancy it!

Wild Beasts, The Olympia, Thursday 15th February.

'Wild Beasts are coming to an end. Our hearts and minds have been devoted to the band since we were teenagers. We've created something quite of our own and built a body of work which we stand by as heartfelt and true. The four of us have decided for our own reasons and in our own ways that it is now time to leave this orbit,' reads a statement from the band, regarding their split.

HOWEVER, in a final goodbye, the band are doing a handful of farewell shows, one of which is in Dublin this week. Do not miss this one!

Smokie, Vicar Street, Sunday 18th February.

Serious throwback here, but you'd be surprised how many Smokie songs you actually know (and, you'll impress you ma if you attend no doubt!)

Singing 'Alice, Alice, who the F**CK is ALICE' at the top of your lungs in Vicar Street? Sure what else would you be doing of a Sunday.
