Let get one thing out of the way – I consider myself a staunch feminist.

The abortion rights march attending, placard waving, body positivity advocating type of feminist. I even have blue hair if that helps your currently developing impression of me.

I agree with all of the principles of feminism – it is so necessary to fight to achieve equal rights for both men and women, and there are definitely areas of society that need pruning and re-education do to so.

However, in the vast jungle that is societal issues, I would perceive grid girls to be a rose with thorns rather than a fully fledged venomous tentacula (Harry Potter fans, this reference is for you.)

To me, the removal of grid girls comes from a good place, in that it aims to eliminate the normalisation of objectifying women.

When a woman is objectified or catcalled, it minimises and depersonalises her to a level that no one should experience – no woman should be seen as a sex object against her will.

However, if a woman chooses a career path as a grid girl, then who is anyone to say that she cant do that?

The issue with banning grid girls is that the decision is a huge double standard.

My interpretation of the main principle of feminism is that feminism is an equaliser that gives women the freedom to do what they want to, be that enrolling in a STEM course, choosing to be childless or opting to tackle the difficult and taxing career path that is modelling.

That freedom, to me, includes the ability to do whatever one pleases with ones own body, be that covering it in tattoos, concealing it with hijab, having  lip fillers, opting for sterilisation, not shaving, or wearing skimpy clothes without being judged.

I wouldn't stand for anyone judging me for what I wore on any level, and with my experience of associating with fellow feminists, none of them would either.

Yet the ban on grid girls is reflective of a judgement on what these women are seen as based on how they appear – that is, scantily clad and decorative.

Standing around in two-toned polyester emblazoned with a sponsor's logo is an outdated marketing ploy, but if a women wants to play on her self confidence and gain respectable employment by doing so, then I think that that is completely her business, and no one elses.

In my opinion, if you support Kim Kardashian's right to free the nipple on Instagram, you should probably consider why you believe that grid girls don't have the same right to financially flourish based on their sexuality.

A post shared by Kim Kardashian West (@kimkardashian) on

Is banning grid girls the first step towards banning women from publicly expressing, and getting paid for, their sexuality entirely?

Will models, promotional workers, strippers, glamour models, porn actresses, Ibiza shot girls, ring girls, playboy bunnies, Instagram models – essentially any woman who is comfortable expressing her sexuality – be the next to go?

Backlash has been mounting against the ban since grid girls themselves have been speaking out against it.

Many feel that they have faced worst treatment from women claiming to be feminists than they have from the racing community.

If objectification is the issue, then why not tackle the perpetrator rather than the victim?

Why remove women from something they enjoy doing, something that pays the bills for many of them, rather than attempting to re-educate the enforcers of the objectification?

If grid girls are such an inherent tradition to Formula 1 fans, then why not remind the audience that the women are there to advertise and entertain, not objectify.

If that's the case, then I would happily retract the ban on grid girls in favour of replacing it with a scheme which encourages men to refrain from objectifying.

However, I can appreciate that the existence of grid girls and not 'grid boys' is inherently sexist and completely outdated.

Perhaps modernising the tradition (slight oxymoron there) to include male promotional workers posing on Ferraris and entertaining crowds would help to balance the situation.

Being a professional grid girl is not the same as any illicit industry that actually exploits women – no one is trafficked or forced against their will to become a flag-waving promotional model.

At the end of the day, I will always defend a women's right to choose over societal expectations and pressures.

For us, our first was Mad Men – which surprisingly didn't make the list (we love you Jon Hamm).

According to Netflix data, Breaking Bad was the most popular first binge on the streaming service in Ireland.

We’ve been hoping The Spice Girls would reunite for quite some time now, so it’s safe to say we were over the moon when the band revealed their reunion news last week.

However, after all this time, we couldn't help but wonder why the girls finally decided to get back together.

Many people claimed it was all for the money, however, Victoria Beckham has revealed the real reason behind their reunion- and it is beyond inspiring.

The fashion designer admitted that the empowering Me Too movement showed her that the time was right.

Posh Spice explained that the powerful campaign reminded her that The Spice Girls have the power to spread a meaningful message.

The Spice Girls are all about girl power, which is well needed at this time in women’s history.

Speaking to The Mirror, Vic shared: 'The Time’s Up and #MeToo movements have shone a light on how powerful we can be when we work together to bring about change.'

'The reunion is all about spreading that important message that women are worthy, and they are strong.

'My career has always focused on empowering and celebrating women, so the momentum that these movements brought only makes me even more determined and passionate in my beliefs,' said Victoria.

As if we didn't love Girl Power the first time around, this is definitely a message we can get behind.

Public service announcement!

Kinder Beuno ice-creams are now a thing and they look positively DIVINE.

According to European reports, the chocolate and hazelnut treats will hit freezers this summer, and if that doesn't shake your sweet tooth to its core, we don't know what will.

Langnese, a German ice cream brand owned by Unilever, posted this description to its official website.

"Here, fine hazelnut milk ice meets a core of Kinder milk chocolate sauce, embedded in a crispy croissant covered with a fine layer of hazelnut cream made from Ferrero hazelnuts."

Say no more.

Needless to say, Twitter is pretty excited about the news:

It's not clear yet whether or not the ice-creams will be available in Irish stores, but hey, that that's what city breaks in Europe are for right?

Sun, sight-seeing and Kinder Bueno ice-creams – what more could you ask for?

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 125g butter, melted

Whether it is seductively adding more pull to your pout, or you're scrawling a meaningful message on a mirror, the power of lipstick cannot be ignored.

Here are nine BIZARRE things you didn't know about your lippy…

1. White lipstick was a trend in the 1960s for a true 'mod' look.

2. It’s said that women who wear lipstick daily unintentionally eat about 4 pounds of lipstick in their lifetime (HOW GROSS).

3. In the 1700s, a man could have his marriage annulled if his wife had used lip rouge during their courtship.

4.  According to a study called the 'Lipstick Effect' women increase their desire to buy lipstick during economic recessions.

5. Some shimmery lipsticks used to contain fish scales (also known as “pearl essence”) to add shine.

6. Although the term 'lipstick' wasn’t first used until 1880, lipstick use actually dates back to Ancient Egypt. It’s said that Cleopatra made her red lippy from crushed Carmine beetles.

7. One of the most expensive lipsticks in the world is Guerlain’s KissKiss Gold and Diamonds Lipstick, which will set you back €56,000.

8. While all other cosmetics were rationed in Britain during WWII, lipstick was kept in production because Winston Churchill felt it boosted morale.

With Valentine's day fast approaching, all this talk of love and romance has us wondering if there really is someone out there for everyone?

Finding a date in this country is no easy task – or at least finding a decent date isn't.

Sure, you could swipe through Tinder, get chatting to young beau in the bar queue, or even join a tag rugby league, but what do you do when none of the traditional methods seem to be working for you?

Put your lovely mug on a billboard – duh!

This week SPIN1038’s Fully Charged Breakfast duo, Graham and Nathan are launching a new dating concept that will see the faces of four Dublin singles featured on billboards around the city.

Inspired by the dating failures of their friend Rusty Rupert, the presenting team thought it was time to shake up the Irish dating scene.

In an Irish radio first, Fully Charged’s Billboard Singles will see four Dublin singles get their very own billboard dating ad for two weeks from 26th February.

Prospective daters who want the chance to date one of the Billboard Singles just need to send in a WhatsApp voice note on why they’d like a date with them and the Billboard Single will get to pick their perfect match on air.

Or, if you'd like to appear on the billboard yourself, simply sign up at www.spin1038.com/SINGLE.

Listeners can follow the Billboard Singles journey every morning on the Fully Charged Breakfast Show and potential daters can keep their eyes peeled for the Billboard Singles from the 26th February.

As the World Porridge Making Champion (yes, this is a genuine competition), Ellinor Persson knows a thing or two about how to make oatmeal. We chatted with the Swedish lady to learn all her tips and tricks about how to make the perfect bowl of porridge.

What is your secret recipe for the World Best Porridge?

I make my world champion porridge with steel cut oats (also called pinhead oats), but they require you stay by the hob, constantly stirring for nearly half an hour. My World Championship Porridge recipe consists of steel cut oats, salt and water.

Porridge oats are a much faster option for busy mornings, as they take only a few minutes to cook. The ginger gives this porridge a more grown-up taste, but you can leave it out if you prefer.

Ingredients (for 2)

  • 40g SuperValu Porridge
  • 200ml water
  • 50ml orange juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Freshly grated root ginger

Method

Put the oats, water, orange juice, a pinch of salt and a little freshly grated root ginger (if using) in a medium-sized saucepan.

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure the porridge doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan.

Taste and add more salt or ginger if you like. Divide between two bowls and serve hot.

Do you recommend using the microwave or a saucepan?

I always use a saucepan but for those busy mornings a microwave is the perfect way to make a piping hot bowl of porridge.

Do you prefer it plain and simple or do you like adding some toppings?

Simple porridge with salt and water is always a nice option but I love porridge with jam, epically blueberry jam. I also like chopped nuts or some pumpkin seeds and some milk but sometimes I substitute milk for yoghurt. Be creative with your porridge. Try new recipes and toppings!

Porridge is really on trend at the moment, how can you explain that?

In Scandinavia, Ireland and Scotland porridge has been the natural breakfast choice for generations. Today younger generations are more conscious about what foods they put into their bodies and have turned to porridge as their go to healthy breakfast.

I think that savour porridge is definitely a trend that is on the rise. Porridge recipes have changed over the years to include exciting flavours like paprika, ginger, chilli and sometimes even whiskey. I often eat savoury porridge for dinner or lunch.

What are the benefits of porridge?

One of the most nutritious breakfast foods to kick start your day is oats. Oats are high in soluble fibres, which help even out the sugar and cholesterol levels in our blood.

While porridge oats are extremely affordable, they’re also delicious and now considered a superfood. There are many ways to further enhance the taste and health benefits by adding blueberries, seeds or nut butters.

Porridge will also keep those hunger pangs at bay right through until lunchtime.

What are your memories associated with porridge growing up?

I have the strong association with porridge and my father. He would eat porridge every day without fail.  He used to work in a forest and would be gone for hours on end, porridge was his go to breakfast to keep his energy up during a hard day’s work.

What do you think of overnight oats?

During the winter, overnight oats are not my favourite thing to eat because they are cold. They are perfect to have it during the summer with fresh fruit but in the winter a prefer to eat something warm to kick start my day. The Happy Pear have a great overnight oats recipe which I plan on making a lot during the summer.

OUT THE DOOR OVERNIGHT OATS – SERVES 2 TO 3

"This recipe is really easy. You can have everything done the night before and just grab it as you run out the door in the morning. Soaking oats overnight makes them sweeter and easier to digest. They are loaded with fibre to boost your digestion and immune system. Chia seeds add a nice texture as well as boosting the nutritional profile of this dish massively, especially omega‐3, protein and fibre."

  • 100g oats
  • 2 tbsp raisins
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp goji berries
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
  • 400ml rice milk

TOPPINGS

  • blueberries
  • raspberries
  • banana
  • grated apple or pear
  • yogurt
  • bee pollen
  • granola

1. The night before, put the oats, raisins, chia seeds, goji berries and pumpkin seeds into a bowl or container and mix. Add the rice milk, cover and put into the fridge. It looks very nice in a Kilner jar if you have one.

2. In the morning, simply add your toppings. The oat base will keep for 2 to 3 days in the fridge.

To celebrate the goodness and health benefits of porridge, SuperValu will be giving FREE PORRIDGE to customers nationwide on Saturday the 10th February with any purchase made in store.
** SuperValu is offering 1 x 1kg Porridge pack to each customer with any purchase while stocks last. Early bird catches the porridge – so customers are advised to visit stores early to receive their pack. Available while stocks last.
