We've all been there – It's Monday morning, the alarm goes off right on cue, and the thoughts of the day ahead immediately fill you with dread.

Next, the moral dilemma sets in; "sure, I've a pretty packed work schedule this week, but one day off isn't going to hurt, right?"

Truth be told, everyone deserves a spontaneous day off every now and again and while calling in sick probably isn't the best way to go about it, sometimes it's the only way you'll get to indulge in some much needed 'me time'.

These thoughts probably cross people's minds every Monday morning, but it looks like tomorrow is the day when most people will give in to the urge.

The first Monday of February marks 'National Sickie Day', meaning that a employers should expect to see a signifiant increase in the amount absences due to illness – or at least that's what they'll be told.

The spike in illness, be that fake or not, is due to a combination of factors.

Not only does it fall after Super Bowl Sunday, a night when sports fans stay up until the wee hours to watch the famous American football event, but it's also the first weekend after Dry January and the first after post-Christmas pay day.

Needless to say, many people spend the day nursing hangovers and catching up on sleep, though it's not like they're going to tell they're bosses that.

So, what excuse do you use when you just can't fathom the idea of a full working day?

Well, according to research, these are the nine best excuses for calling in sick, as recommended by employers.

1. Flu

2. Back pain

3. Injury caused by accident

4. Stress

5. Elective surgery

6. Depression

7. Anxiety

8. Common cold

9. Migraine

10. None of the above

So, whether you're planning a late one tonight, or are still recovering from the weekend that was, you might as well draft your email now so you don't have to worry about it come morning time.

Happy Sickie Day everybody!

The Vegan movement has gained quite a bit of momentum over the past few years with more and more people choosing to follow a plant based diet.

All animal products are off the menu – meaning meat, poultry, seafood, eggs and dairy are all prohibited.

However, given the growing percentage of the population choosing to go vegan, many chefs have been inspired to created plant-based alternatives to satisfy the cravings of former dairy-lovers.

French entrepreneur Anne Guth, has created a vegan Camembert using cashew nut milk instead of cow's.

The 28-year-old set up her alternative food company Les Petits Veganne after she was unable to find any vegan cheeses in France.

Given the distinct lack of dairy, the Camembert product can not actually be sold as a 'cheese' per se and is instead marketed as a 'vegetable speciality'.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Anne said: "The most difficult thing was to create vegan ‘cheeses’ that appear visually beautiful.”

According to reports, the cheese-like product earned a mixed reaction during a blind taste test organised by the French media.

One Parisian cheesemonger said: "There’s no animal smell at all. The texture is strange.

"It’s a little like a mousse. It’s a very mild product, but the rind has a bit of an unpleasant, bitter aftertaste," The Telegraph reports.

The Camembert retails online for €10.90, and while it is currently out of stock, you can check out www.petits-veganne.fr to see when it's back on sale.

Just when we thought the weather may have taken a turn for the better, fresh warnings from Met Éireann indicate that the wintery spell isn't going anywhere just yet.

A Status Yellow snow and ice warning has been issued for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Letrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary and Waterford.

Forecasts show that snow showers could occur from Monday evening, with accumulations of 3cm expected in some areas.

As a result, treacherous road conditions are expected by Tuesday morning and motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution.

Tuesday afternoon will see highs of three to six degrees, though a brisk northwesterly wind will make it seem colder.

It will become cold and frosty again that night, though winds are expected to ease.

It's a similar story for the rest of the week with cool temperatures, wintry showers and fresh breezes all expected – wahey!

Will it ever end?

Today marks World Cancer Day, and Minister for Health Simon Harris has revealed the welcome news that Ireland’s cancer survival rates have increased.

The aim of World Cancer Day is to show the world that we can beat cancer. “I am delighted to see a focus on improving the quality of life for cancer survivors through World Cancer Day.”

"The campaign theme for World Cancer Day is 'We can. I can' and highlights the fact that we can all play our part in reducing the burden of cancer,” he added.

Ireland’s cancer survival rates have jumped up in the global rankings, with our rates jumping from 44 percent in the years 1994-1998, to 61 percent during 2010-2014, according to The Lancet.

The Minister stated that Ireland’s rates will continue to improve in the future, especially if the public make simple changes.

“Eating more fruit and veg, keeping active, watching our alcohol intake, keeping a healthy weight, and of course, quitting smoking, are all, in fact, cancer prevention in action."

As well as making improvements to our lifestyle, Mr Harris stated that The National Cancer Strategy 2017-2026 will help improve rates. “Over the lifetime of this strategy, Irish survival rates will reach the top quartile in Europe.”

Cancer is the second biggest killer in Ireland, with heart disease claiming approximately 10,000 lives every year.

According to the Irish Cancer Society, someone dies from cancer every hour. They revealed that by 2020, one in two people in Ireland will develop cancer at some point in their life.

The disease is responsible for 30 percent of deaths in Ireland, with skin cancer being the most common cancer amongst Irish people.

However, on World Cancer Day the public have been urged to remember the words, “We Can. I Can.”

Together we can beat cancer.

You enter the dressing room with an arm full of denim and a heart full of hope, and exit with a sense of frustration you never quite knew was possible.

We could barely contain our excitement when we were greeted by a reunion photo of the Spice Girls on Instagram last Friday.

With rumours of a comeback tour circulating, we can’t help but wonder where the Wannabe singers will perform their first show.

According to The Sun, the girls have high hopes for their comeback performance.

"Geri suggested the Royal Wedding is a fantastic opportunity, and that they should offer to perform at the reception,” they revealed.

Apparently, Meghan Markle is a huge fan of the 90s pop band, so who knows, their reunion may be taking place in front of the Queen herself.

“The wedding fits in perfectly with Geri’s idea that the reunion should be very British. She sees it as a big of their identity, and one they should keep."

Picking a wedding band is usually tricky, especially when you have the entire Royal Family to please, however, we just can’t picture Prince William dancing along to Spice Up Your Life.

Speaking of their future, the girls stated, “The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together."

They added, "We all agree that there are many exciting possibilities that will once again embrace the original essence of The Spice Girls while reinforcing our message of female empowerment for future generations."

Performing at the wedding of the year is one hell of a way to kick-start their reunion. Geri, Victoria, Mel C, Emma and Mel B have high hopes, but with Meghan Markle on their side, they may stand a chance of performing at the Royal Wedding on May 19.

Harvey Weinstein is said to be considering legal action after Uma Thurman claimed he attacked her in a London hotel room 25 years ago.

Speaking to The New York Times, the actress claimed the disgraced producer assaulted her following the release of the Weinstein-funded Pulp Fiction, and recalled another incident in which he threatened to ruin her career.

He denies any wrongdoing and says he is "stunned and saddened" by the allegations.

Uma told the paper how Weinstein tried to shove himself on top of her and attempted to expose himself.

“He did all kinds of unpleasant things,” she said. “But he didn’t actually put his back into it and force me. You’re like an animal wriggling away, like a lizard."

“I was doing anything I could to get the train back on the track. My track. Not his track.”

She went on to say how she told Pulp Fiction director, Quentin Tarantino, about the alleged incident and he confronted the producer at Cannes Film Festival in 2001.

Hours later, Weinstein apologised, though Uma was not convinced.

“I just walked away stunned, like ‘ok, well there’s my half-assed apology’.”

A spokesperson for Weinstein says he "misread" Uma's signals.

“Mr. Weinstein acknowledges making a pass at Ms. Thurman in England after misreading her signals in Paris. He immediately apologised.”

Criminal investigations are underway on both sides of the Atlantic following a number of sexual assault allegations against the former Hollywood big shot.

Fast fashion retailer Zara is facing a mixture of backlash and ridicule this week for cultural appropriation.

The brand has been accused of appropriating East Asian culture in one of their new designs.

The skirt that people have taken issue with is described by the website as a checked mini skirt, but online critics claim that it has been plucked from pattern and styling of a traditional lungi garment.

The lungi is a type of wrap around skirt most frequently worn by men in Indian, Arab and African cultures.

The garment seemed familiar to many people, who called out the brand for flogging their €89.00 skirt without crediting the lungi.

'My father and uncles wore them, as did many men who wanted something casual, cool, and relaxed to wear in the equatorial heat of Southeast Asia,' wrote Elizabeth Segran in Fast Company.

'And an everyday sarong costs under $3. They’re the garment of the masses, a great equalizer, worn by both royalty and day labourers.'

While some are offended that the company brought out the skirt in the first place, others expressed that they wouldn't have minded if only Zara had given credit to the origins of the style.

Others ridiculed Zara, highlighting how the skirt is worn by 'older uncles' and is now being passed off as a fashion piece.

Zara has not yet responded to the criticism.

The 24-year old vandal who scrawled hateful and homophobic messages on the outer walls of one of Ireland's best known gay bars The George has been acquitted of all charges.

The bar and club, which has maintained its place on South Georges Street, Dublin since 1987, was defaced with homophobic slurs.

The suspect from Finglas was acquitted on a number of technicalities, reports The Irish Times.

A post shared by The George Bar (@thegeorgedublin) on

When he was arrested, he allegedly admitted his crimes to Gardai. However, there was no Garda witness who authorised the interview in which he confessed.

Berkeley pleaded not guilty to the charge of criminal damage.

The offensive language included the use of the term 'f*****,' with the phrase 'f****** out' scrawled across the door of the venue.

He also has a number of previous charges, including the possession of knives and an imitation fire arm, according to The Irish Times.

'In general this is quite a shocking incident as that area of Dublin in mostly quite safe and LGBTQ friendly,' said No Hate Speech Irelandspokesperson Ian McGahon.

'In the graffiti they used the swastika, this is particularly disturbing given that that thousands of gay men were sent to their death in the Nazi Germany concentration camps.'

'The graffiti used was abusive and is certainly homophobic in using the Nazi symbols and also the terminology 'f****** out.'
