Monthly Archives: February 2018

Mondays are really shit most of the time, with a long week of work ahead, and the weekend a distant memory.

However, today we have some wonderful new that is guaranteed to brighten up the saddest day of the week.

What could we possibly be referring to, I hear you ask?

WELL, Toblerone have released their own ce creams – and holy moly, they look delicious.

The triangular Swiss chocolate with honey and almond nougat has been transformed into individual ice creams, and they look and sound like quite the treat.

Upon further investigation, the product has initially been rolled out in the UK, but we're expecting them to make the leap across the pond before the Summer.

Currently in cities across the UK, you can feast on chocolate and honey ice cream, surrounded by milk chocolate with honey and almond nougat pieces, for just three quid from our pals at Tesco.

This three quid buys a pack of three ice creams, so you have the opportunity to share (or eat them all because #loveyourself).

We genuinely cannot WAIT for these bad boys to hit Irish stores.

I feel as though everywhere I look, I'm being told about a new product I should be using on my face.

It can get pretty overwhelming, as few of us are cosmetic experts, and the vast majority of us also just don't have the time.

So, considering we all have a lack of time, but an interest in what really works – we're going to help!

All the lovely ladies in SHEmazing HQ are going to start trying out various beauty products – and report back on the results.

Gamme Hydra Essentiel de Clarins, parfait pour les peaux déshydratées et assoifées

First up is the moisturiser I use twice a day, every day.

I have pretty alright skin (thank you mother for the genes), but I do suffer from dryness and dehydration on occasion.

I also have pretty sensitive skin, so while I may not have spots, I can break out in a rash in the blink of an eye, if I use something my skin doesn't love.

Thankfully, my skin LOVES Clarins 'Hydra-Essentiel' silky cream (full disclosure – this is NOT sponsored by Clarins, I'm just obsessed with this cream.)

Growing up, my lovely mum always used Clarins, so you could almost say it's in my blood – but I always thought it was a brand for older skin.

Wrong. This cream is PERFECT for us ladies in our 20s, who are only starting to pay our skin attention.

The Clarins website describes the cream as:

'With this cream, your skin’s capacity to retain water is restored. It remains intensely hydrated in all circumstances. Its secret? Organic, leaf of life extract, a powerful natural hydration activator that boosts the skin’s hyaluronic acid* production. Your instantly quenched skin is fresh, comfortable, radiant, and plump.'

Say bye bye to dry skin thanks to Clarins Hydra-Essential line

And honestly, I would usually be fairly cynical when it comes to product descriptions, but this one hits the nail on the head.

It is not the cheapest moisturiser in the world, at €45 a tub, but honestly it's well worth the investment.

10/10!

As millennials, we're expected to tuck into avocados at every meal, incorporate them into our beauty routines and even occasionally drink our lattes from their skins -we're not kidding.

However for those of us who weren't a fan of the flavour of avo, we can now get behind the trend without the savoury flavour.

Waitrose is launching an avocado Easter Egg for this year's chocolate feast – and while it looks exactly, suspiciously like a real fruit, it's actually made of sweet sweet chocolate.

The egg is made of white chocolate, dyed the perfect avocado green with natural food colouring.

The stone of the fruit is made of cocoa-dusted milk chocolate, all wrapped up in a dark chocolate shell.

While we may not have Waitrose in the Republic of Ireland, the egg is available to online shoppers from Tuesday.

We'll be filling our online baskets with both the chocolate and the regular versions.

The Time's Up Movement continues to grow from strength to strength, as the women in the field of acting maintain its place in the spotlight.

Since the success of the all-black Oscars, ahead of tonights' BAFTAs a different statement has been made.

190 UK actresses have penned and signed an emotive and striking open letter about Time's Up.

A post shared by Rosamund Pike (@rosamundpike) on

According to The Metro, the letter has been signed by the likes of Emma Watson, Gemma Arterton, Emilia Clarke, Rosamund Pike  and Carey Mulligan.

The letter calls for an end to harassment and abuse faced by women at the hands of sexual predators.

‘This movement is bigger than just a change in our industry alone,' it reads

A post shared by @emilia_clarke on

'This movement is intersectional, with conversations across race, class, community, ability and work environment, to talk about the imbalance of power. In the very near past, we lived in a world where sexual harassment was an uncomfortable joke; an unavoidable awkward part of being a girl or a woman.'

'It was certainly not to be discussed, let alone addressed. In 2018, we seem to have woken up in a world ripe for change. If we truly embrace this moment, a line in the sand will turn to stone.’

Tonight, a number of the women who signed the letter will be joined at the BAFTAs by activist guest they have chosen to accompany them.

Bestselling author Emma Hannigan has shared that she has 'very little time' left to live.

The Bray-based writer has battled cancer for 11 years.

Yesterday she posted on her website and Facebook page, saying: 'All good things must come to an end.'

'The time that I knew was borrowed must be given back soon, so it seems.'

The 45-year-old said that her doctors have 'thrown everything but the kitchen sink at this fight but all avenues have now been exhausted'.

'To say that I am heartbroken doesn’t begin to cover it,' she wrote.

The author discovered she carries the Brca 1 cancer gene in 2005, according to the Irish Independent, which means she had a 50 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer and an 85 percent of developing breast cancer.

She underwent a double mastectomy and had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in 2006 as a preventative move that reduced her cancer risk to five percent.

Despite her surgery, Emma was diagnosed with cancer for the first time in 2007.

The bestselling writer shared some reflections on her website in the wake of her news: 'Faced with very little time can I tell you what screams out at me? Love.'

'Nothing else has much meaning anymore. Just the love I feel for the people I hold dear. My two babies (ok they both tower over me, but I’m still allowed call them my babies) my husband, my parents, my family, my friends and readers.'

'Yes you guys are up there on the short list. You’ve been an integral part of my existence and have championed me and held me in your virtual arms.'

Emma also hopes that her readers like her new book, Letters to My Daughters, which she is 'immensely proud of'.

The author spread the love in the post with her heartfelt words: 'The love in my heart is all that matters now. I am broken-hearted at having to say goodbye so if it’s alright we’ll say farewell instead…'

'Mind each other. Be kind to each other and hold those you love close by.'

'Life is so very precious. We never know the day or hour that it will be whipped away. So fill your days with as much happiness as you can muster.'

One day in the distant future, we're probably going to look back and lol at how we dressed as teens and young adults.

A group of goth-styled teens from Dublin are probably feeling the exact same way right now, as 30-years on, evidence of their alternative past has resurfaced.

An RTE segment from 1989 is currently doing the rounds, after it appeared on Reddit's front page and was re-shared by Lovin' Dublin.

The video, called Goths, Cureheads and Psychobillies, was actually posted to Reddit four years ago, but recently gained new traction.

The video shows ‘Head to Toe’ presenter Mary O’Sullivan delving into the gothic subculture on the streets of Dublin (and frankly, her glasses are the star of the show.)

The teens she interviews range from back-combed, shirt wearing Cureheads, to self-proclaimed goths in crucifix necklaces and heavy eyeshadow.

Check the full video out here on the RTE Archives and prepare for some serious nostalgia.

With the abortion rights referendum creeping ever closer, it's important to keep the discussion surrounding the repeal campaign flowing.

Saoirse Ronan has spoken to The Irish Times regarding her thoughts on the upcoming referendum.

Speaking 'cautiously' in an interview, the Oscar-nominated actress told the news tome that she feels that women have the right to make decisions about their reproductive health.

A post shared by Saoirse Ronan (@ronan.saoirse) on

'I will be voting when the referendum happens,' she told The Irish Times.

'I was coming into my womanhood when that discussion was being had after the marriage referendum. And I know so many people who have been affected by this situation.'

'I just feel everybody has a right to their own body. Everyone has a right to make their own decisions,' she continued.

A post shared by Saoirse Ronan (@ronan.saoirse) on

The actress also feels that people have their right to an opinion on the matter, but that it is essential for the people of Ireland to vote and make that decision for themselves.

'I think it will be an empowering thing for the people of Ireland to get out and make their own decision on the topic. More than anything else – regardless of how you vote – we need to be given the chance to have our voices heard,' she said.

'Since the marriage referendum, Ireland has definitely taken a turn. I do feel it’s become more of a modern, cosmopolitan place. It’s such a turnaround.'

'I feel like there is a turning point with our generation. Women are being empowered in a way they haven’t before.'

While we may not have a palace to decorate, the news that Disney has opened a homeware store got us excited.

From lavish, Minnie Mouse adorned throw pillows to a Pluto-shaped piñata, we're loving every single item we've seen so far.

The store just opened in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District in California, and Disney fans have been sharing snaps of the new merch.

A post shared by Stephanie Powers (@stephrpowers) on

If you're planning a trip to the Cali park, you'll be able to see for yourself all of the various items on display.

There's even an entire section dedicated just to pet accessories.

The items are also seasonal, and will change as the parks go through their various decors for the likes of Easter, Summer and Christmas.

If you're not lucky enough to be  heading to California any time soon, many of the items are actually available online.

This way, we can still Disney-fy our homes without actually visiting the USA.

With a successful Disney store already on Dublin's Grafton Street, we may have to start a petition to get them stocking the homeware we want.

Growing up in the 90s allowed us to be on the precipice of the development of at-home gaming consoles.

From the GameCube and the Game Boy to the first two (and arguable best two, to the truly nostalgic) PlayStation consoles, it was quite a time to be alive when it came to imaginative gaming.

While the graphics may not have been as sophisticated as what we have today, legendary games were created at the time – and there are reports that one of the PlayStation's most revered character s is making a modern comeback.

A post shared by BufferPodcast (@bufferpodcast) on

According to GamesRadar, Spyro the little purple dragon is making it's way back into your lives via a PS4 reboot.

Spyro entertained the masses for years with variations of his adventures defeating the likes of Ripto and Melefor, with Sparx always at his side, of course.

The reboot is rumoured to include three games, based on Spyro's previous adventures, remastered into one package.

A post shared by Talking of Games (@talkingofgames) on

Last year, Crash Bandicoot, another beloved 90s PS character, got a similar treatment as a PS4 exclusive, to massive success.

The Crash reboot has sold over 2.5 million copies, and Spyro is expected to see the same success.

Whenever this game is released, don't expect to see us until we've finished it.

While we love attending music festival, there are some aspects of them that really bother us eco-conscious.

From the hundreds of thousands of plastic cups discarded on the ground to the vast tundras of tents and sleeping bags abandoned by revellers, sometime we think you should be banned from festivals if you're caught not using the recycling facilities.

While we definitely tidy up our own camping space and ensure we put our rubbish in the appropriate bins, there's one more small adjustment we can now make thanks to an innovative new beauty company.

A post shared by EcoStardust (@ecostardust) on

Belive it or not, some environmental scientists have called for glitter to be banned due to the impact is has on various eco-systems.

Glitter is made up of tiny plastic shards which cannot naturally and harmlessly break down.

The are considered to be microplastics – making them very harmful to animals and fish if ingested.

A post shared by EcoStardust (@ecostardust) on

Luckily, one company decided that enough was enough, and developed an actual bio-degradable glitter for our festival faces.

Eco Stardust is providing festival goers with an eco-friendly option for their beauty looks.

The glitter they create is made form plant cellulose, rather than plastic, and so is biodegradable and compostable.

A post shared by EcoStardust (@ecostardust) on

'We are a team of eco-conscious festival goers who are crazy about glitter and passionate about the environment,' reads their manifesto

'We love glitter; we cover ourselves in it and throw it around like confetti at parties and festivals.'

'However, once we realised we were covering ourselves and the world in little bits of plastic it took the sparkle out of it for us, therefore we started our mission to find an alternative and this is how EcoStardust Biodegradable Glitter came about.'

The product is also vegan and cruelty free.
