The Duchess of Cambridge has penned a heartfelt note to midwives across the United Kingdom.

Kate shared that she shadowed staff at Kingston Hospital in London which taught her a lot about the work they do.

In her letter, Kate wrote:

“You are there for women at their most vulnerable; you witness strength, pain and unimaginable joy on a daily basis. Your work often goes on behind the scenes, and away from the spotlight. Recently I was privileged enough to witness a small section of it first hand, spending several days at Kingston Hospital’s Maternity Unit.

“Although this was not my first encounter with the care and kindness provided by midwives across the country, it gave me a broader insight into the true impact you have on everybody you help.”

She continued, “Your role in supporting this critical phase of development extends far beyond the complicated task of delivering a baby successfully. The help and reassurance you provide for parents to be and parents of newborns is just as crucial. It goes a long way in building parents’ confidence from the start, with lifelong impact on the future happiness of their children.”

The mum-of-three praised them for being there during such special and life-changing moments in women’s lives.

“I want to thank you for all that you do. It has been a real privilege learning from you so far, and I look forward to meeting and learning from even more of you in the coming years and decades,” she gushed.

Christmas Day is almost here but I feel like all anyone is thinking about is whether their online deliveries will arrive on time or what time Penneys closes at on Christmas Eve.

As a child, my fondest Christmas memories are of my parents and their friends singing along to Slade in the kitchen, decorating the tree with my little sisters and bickering over who will put the star on top, visiting my Nanny’s house and revelling in the fact that we could eat chocolate before dinner.

The last thing I think of are the gifts. Don’t get me wrong, I nearly keeled over with joy when a Sylvanian Families Brick Oven Bakery was under the tree one Christmas, but nowadays the most wonderful time of the year is all about shopping.

Christmas is starting to revolve around Amazon deliveries, late night shopping and taking the perfect photo of the tree for Instagram.

We’ve forgotten the fact that spending hundreds on gifts isn’t the true meaning of Christmas.

We have been conditioned to think this way so let me remind you of the things that truly matter at Christmas time.

  • Waking up on Christmas morning and hugging your Mam.
  • Singing along to Wham as you drive home with your Dad.
  • Swooning over Jude Law in The Holiday with your sisters.
  • That first sip of Butler’s Hot Chocolate on a cold December evening.
  • Catching the Father Ted Christmas special and quoting the entire thing.
  • Rockin’ around the Christmas tree, literally.
  • Helping the men of the family wrap their presents on the sly.
  • Stopping to listen to carol singers on Grafton Street.
  • The smell that hits you as you open the first tin of Roses.
  • Dancing around the kitchen to Mariah Carey with your best friends.
  • Pints in your local pub on Christmas Eve.
  • Fluffy roast potatoes that make you drool.
  • Laughing as you struggle to fit the turkey in the oven: “It didn’t look that big in the butchers.”
  • Receiving Christmas cards from family who won’t make it home for Christmas
  • Seeing the baffled look on your cat/dog’s face when they see the tree for the first time
  • Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ to the bus driver
  • Your Nanny’s red cheeks after one too many glasses of mulled wine.
  • Sharing stories about the loved ones who are no longer around for Christmas.
  • Pretending your Grandad didn’t fall asleep after dinner: “I was just resting my eyes.”
  • Watching Santa leave the North Pole on the news, no matter what age you are.
  • Driving around and looking at all the Christmas lights in your hometown.
  • Trying to find out which one of your cousins keeps putting empty wrappers in the tin of Celebrations.
  • Seeing the Coca Cola ad for the first time.
  • Drinking a cold glass of Bailey’s by the fire.
  • The first turkey sandwich you eat on December 26.

So this is Christmas.

It is believed they will be joined by Meghan’s mum Doria for the Christmas break.

The new parents won’t be spending Christmas at Sandringham with Queen Elizabeth and their extended family, but it is understood that the monarch is supportive of Harry and Meghan’s plans to spend Christmas away from the UK this year.

2019 has been quite a special year for Harry and Meghan, especially as it was the year they became parents for the first time. Their son Archie was born on May 6, 2019 and we’re sure the family-of-three cannot wait to celebrate their first Christmas together.

There is one scene in Love Actually that never fails to make us cry until there are no tears left. You know the one- where Emma Thompson’s character Karen breaks down when she discovers her husband has bought a necklace for another woman.

The gut-wrenching scene is a classic, everyone remembers just how touching Emma’s performance was as she sobbed, alone in her room to that Joni Mitchell CD.

Emma is one of the most talented actresses around, but her talent wasn’t the only thing that helped make the scene feel so real.

The Last Christmas star admitted that her own personal heartache helped influence her performance.

During a fundraiser for the Tricycle Theatre in London, she shared, "That scene where my character is standing by the bed crying is so well known because it’s something everyone’s been through.”

She went on to explain that the breakdown of her relationship with fellow actor Kenneth Branagh helped her with the devastating scene.

Branagh cheated on Emma with Helena Bonham Carter whilst filming Marry Shelley’s Frankenstein in 1994, which resulted in her suffering from clinical depression.

The Stranger Than Fiction star told the Telegraph that she really felt for her character Karen, because she knew that situation all too well, “I’ve had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer.”

This affair ruined their marriage, with Emma admitting, “I had my heart very badly broken by Ken. So I knew what it was like to find the necklace that wasn’t meant for me.”

Luckily, Emma eventually found her true love with her Sense and Sensibility co-star Greg Wise in 1995.  “Greg saved me. He picked up the pieces and put them together again,” she told BBC Radio Four.

I have spent a good chunk of December dreaming about being in The Holiday. All I want is to escape to a dinky cottage in Surrey and fall hopelessly in love with Jude Law.

Is that really too much to ask for?

One blogger has gone further than simply just daydreaming about being part of the festive film and has recreated scenes from the movie.

Eldest siblings, rejoice! We’ve got good news for you. A new study has found that the eldest child is the most intelligent.

The study found that there was “a strong negative relation between birth order and cognitive outcomes of children.”

This news will certainly boost the older siblings ego, but it is bound to cause major sibling rivalry in households across the country.

The study was conducted by teams of researchers at the Universities of Houston, New South Wales and Sheffield.

The teams discovered that older siblings feel more confident when it comes to their academic performances, whilst younger brothers and sisters can often doubt themselves.

This may be because the eldest sibling doesn’t have anyone to compare themselves to. However, as younger siblings know, you’re often compared to your big sister or brother.

There is a huge pressure on youngsters to perform better especially if their big brother is a math whiz, or if their older sister is a history buff.

The team explained that younger siblings may be ‘less intelligent’ because they don’t get as much attention from their parents, compared to their older siblings.

They said parental attention has a massive impact on children’s academic performance. For example, the youngest daughter may not feel as supported as her older brother did when he was in school because the parents have more children to focus on.

“Although later-born children are not born disadvantaged in their health or developmentally, we find that parents are unable to provide them with the same level of cognitive support as they do with their first-born,” they explained.
