I have never heard a silence more deafening than the final moments of Asking for It. The world stopped in a moment of horror and icy realism, like a brutal slap. The actor who played the lead had us choked quietly with her words and her pale complexion against the darkened set.

I was terrified, and I wasn’t the only one. The room erupted in a burst of raw emotion as the audience fell apart. When the lights came on, The Gaiety Theatre was a sea of desperate humans clinging to each other, shoulders shaking and tears streaming.

It's safe to say that Asking for It was one of the most powerful pieces of art I have ever experienced. I say experienced because this play is not something you simply see. It’s something you feel and hear, inside and out as you watch. It is immersion of the most immersive, and it buries you alive until you can’t think of anything else.

I had read the book, so I felt like I was prepared for the harrowing tale of Emma, the teenager from a fictional rural Irish town, obsessed with her image and social status. I was prepared for her story, the crude public sexual assault she experiences and her little town’s inability to deal with it.

Image result for asking for it book

Louise O'Neill's novel had floored me, but nothing could have prepared me for seeing it brought to life.

The play is a magnificent jigsaw of elements that create an eerily close-to-home picture. The kitchen where her family sit and watch their lives fall apart is alive with Irishness, the sound of rain smashing against the windows and the white noise of the radio humming angrily in the background.

The school scenes are beyond accurate: lads flinging dirty white footballs overhead and girls draped over each other with a familiarity that only the Irish school system could inspire. A recording of the protagonist's inner monologue- Cork accent and all- coupled with a harsh spotlight on her pale face, meant there was no escape for the spectator.

We lived and breathed Emma and her world for 2 hours and 55 minutes.

Photo: The Gaiety Theatre

Emma’s story is about all of us. It’s about every single Irish girl who wore an itchy uniform and sat on walls with boys in football jerseys. About mothers and fathers who react the only way they know how when their child is brought so low. Every person in the room could seem themselves on stage in some shape or form. Each glance, stare and comment by the characters was all too familiar.

Asking for It is a brave, raw and uncomfortable piece of art that everyone should see.

The play will run in the Gaiety Theatre until Saturday, October 26. There are still tickets available here.

We are channelling all our girl power energy into our Halloween costumes this year. There’s no better group of people to dress up with than your gals so we’ve conjured up a list of the greatest girl gangs in history.

We’ll feature girl gangs from the 1980s to modern day queens who rule the world.

The Heathers:

The 1989 flick features one of the quirkiest and (meanest) girl gangs in cinema history. Gather up the gang and rock those iconic blazers with padded shoulders, the backcombed hair and don’t forget your scrunchie.

The Original Disney Princesses:

Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel and Belle are the OG Disney gals so why not step into the magical world of Disney this Halloween. Plus, you’ll certainly stand out from the crowd because there’s no doubt everyone will be dressing up as Elsa again this year.

The Barden Bellas:

Pitch Perfect is a movie that celebrates female friendship and supports people who sing ALL the time- we couldn’t love it more if we tried. The perk of dressing up as the Bellas means you can randomly sing all night long because it’s ‘part of the costume’.

The Derry Girls

National heroes. Icons. Irish legends. Who wouldn't want to dress up as Erin, Clare, Michelle, Orla and of course, the wee English fella.

Related image

Rachel, Phoebe and Monica:

Embrace that glorious 90s style by dressing up as the Friends gals with your two closest girls. We’ve always dreamed of rading Rachel’s iconic wardrobe and now we can.

Clueless:

The shops are full of plaid EVERYTHING at the moment so putting this outfit together will be simple. Find the most flawless plaid skirt suit and feel free to mutter ‘Ugh, as if’ to anyone who asks who you're supposed to be.

The Pink Ladies:

We're ending with one of the original girl gangs- the Pink Ladies. Go back in time to the 60s and channel your inner Frenchie or Rizzo with this old-school look. And remember, don’t forget your neck scarf.

Tesco Ireland and McVitie’s today announced details of a new partnership that sees both brands donating 10c to Temple Street for every pack of McVitie’s biscuits sold in Tesco stores and online over the next four weeks.

All funds raised will help Temple Street to purchase eight new beds and mattresses for a vital new ward, which consists of eight isolation rooms for treating Temple Street’s most vulnerable patients.

The promotion will run across all packs of McVitie’s biscuits for the next four weeks until November 12 and will be supported by in store POS and social media to remind customers that when they are enjoying a well-earned biscuit break, they will be helping to raise vital funds for Temple Street.

Emma Barrett, Head of Corporate Development, Temple Street Foundation said: “We’re so grateful to Tesco Ireland and McVitie’s for their support. Every pack sold will play its part in helping us to continue to provide life-saving treatment and facilities for sick children in Ireland.”

Niamh Twyford, Head of Marketing at McVitie’s said “McVitie’s wants to take this moment to give back. This partnership with Tesco Ireland is about encouraging people to recognise the work that the incredible staff of Temple Street do to help sick children in Ireland. It means while enjoying an 11 o’clock break or an after-dinner cup of tea and biscuit, consumers can know they have also helped in raising much needed funds for Temple Street.”

Each year Temple Street treats over 150,000 children from across the country and operates the busiest A&E department in Europe. For thousands of children, Temple Street is the only hospital in Ireland in which they can be treated. Through the charity partner programme, Tesco colleagues and customers can help little people from all over Ireland get better and be real life heroes to children attending the hospital.

Temple Street has been Tesco Ireland’s charity partner since October 2014 and to-date Tesco Ireland has raised €4.5 million in aid of the little heroes of Temple Street.

Riverdale honoured the late Luke Perry with a fitting tribute in last week’s episode.

The emotional episode left fans of the show in floods of tears, but it looks like we won’t see how the characters cope in the weeks after Fred’s death.

The creators of the teen drama said a time jump takes place between episodes one and two, which means this week’s episode takes place in September.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa felt like it would be wise to have some time between Fred’s funeral and the remainder of season four.

He told Entertainment Weekly, “I will say that the shadow Fred’s death casts is on episode 2 and honestly we’re about 10 episodes into the season and we’re still feeling that.”

“The truth is, something that like, Archie [KJ Apa] will be wrestling with that for the rest of his life, other characters less so. One of the things that’s been interesting is when a tragedy like that happens, everyone grieves and then people move on at different points.

“But for the person who’s at the core of it, they live with it every day. We don’t pretend it didn’t happen, it’s still very much permeating Archie’s story,” he stressed.

He continued, “In the writers room, we did want to start episode 2 on a little bit of a lighter note and get back into the high school world. I think that’s a nice balm, a nice counter to it.”

A new episode of Riverdale will air on Netflix on Thursday, October 17.

Disney have released another trailer for the live action remake of Lady and the Tramp and we have goosebumps. The classic Disney tale is one of our all time favourites so it’s safe to say we’re very excited about the pending release.

Directed by Charlie Bean, produced by Bringham Taylor and written by Andrew Bujalski, this live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp is bound get tails wagging when it airs in November.

This time, the small screen will have the honour of bringing us this widely anticipated film and thankfully, us Disney-dog-lovers won’t have to wait too long. On November 12, 2019, the film will be available on #Disney+, the new streaming platform set to compete with the likes of Netflix and Hayu.

The cast of the live action Lady and the Tramp is better than we could’ve expected with Tessa Thompson voicing Lady and Justin Theroux voicing Tramp.

A Star is Born’s Sam Elliot will be voicing Trusty, the trustworthy bloodhound with no sense of smell, a character who plays a key role in the rescue of Tramp from the dogcatcher.

The hilarious Ashley Jensen will voice Jock, the Scottish terrier who lives next door to Lady. We are super excited for this gender swap, as Jensen’s gorgeous Scottish twang seems made for the role of Jock.

Adding to this star-studded cast is Benedict Wong, who will lend his voice to Bull, the adorable Bulldog from the pound.

The icon that is Janelle Monáe will be taking on the legendary song He’s a Tramp, originally sung by Peggy Lee in the 1955 animation. Janelle Monáe voice seems ideal for the sultry Tibetan spaniel, Peg who sings the song to Lady when she spends a night in the pound.

A 26-year-old man has been found guilty of stalking Harry Styles. The Lights Up singer said Pablo Tarazaga-Orero camped outside of his home for several months.

Styles revealed that he felt scared and uncomfortable inside his own home. He reported Pablo’s “erratic and frightening behaviour” to the police, however, Pablo continued to cause distress.

Harry said the Spanish national posted letters and money through his letterbox, followed him to the pub and while he was out jogging.

The Sweet Creature singer appeared in court on Monday and gave evidence to the court.

He said, “Pablo was sleeping outside of my residence; I first became aware of him in March. I thought it was sad that someone so young was sleeping rough at a bus stop when it was cold."

On March 10, Styles offered the homeless man money for food or a hotel but he denied. The following day, the singer gave him sandwiches, salads and two muffins and decided to stop speaking to Pablo.

Harry told the court, “He asked me if I wanted to go to a restaurant to eat. I told him I was on my way to work. I found it a little odd. His facial expression made me feel a little uneasy. It was like a smirk.

"Until that point, I never felt unsafe or uneasy in my own home,” the singer stressed.

Pablo continued to stalk the singer, despite Harry’s best effort to cut off contact.

“I never really encountered this kind of behaviour before. I've employed a night guard. I continue to lock my bedroom door at night."

Pablo stressed that he wasn’t stalking the singer, but just wanted the money he originally offered him.

“I don't have any interest in him. I don't have any feelings for him. I'm not in love with him,” he said.

Pablo Tarazaga-Orero will be sentenced on October 21.
