Yearly Archives: 2019

John Lewis has finally released the 2019 Christmas advert and it may be their best one yet.

This year’s magical advert follows the story of Excitable Edgar, a little dragon who keeps finding himself in trouble.

The adorable dragon accidentally ruins Christmas festivities with his fiery breath.

Edgar gets a little overexcited about the festivities and manages to melt an ice rink and burn a Christmas tree in his village.

However, his best friend Ava comes to the rescue when she finds a way for Edgar to save Christmas.

Ava and Edgar put his fire-breathing skills to good use by getting to Edgar to create a special Christmas pudding for the village’s Christmas dinner.

Bastille frontman Dan Smith sings a stunning version of REO Speedwagon's 80’s hit I Can't Fight This Feeling in the festive advert.

Say goodbye to Black Friday and hello to Green Friday by buying Irish brands and products on November 29, urges a leading Irish retailer.

Green Friday is an initiative led by Marian O’Gorman of Kilkenny to champion a movement to support Irish brands and businesses nationwide.

Kilkenny, and bodies like the Design and Crafts Council, Retail Excellence, SFA, Chambers Ireland and others will lead a powerful and passionate drive to reawaken people to the significance of buying Irish, shopping local, and the wealth of talent and enterprise behind our Irish craft and design businesses.

A national campaign is to be rolled out in the coming weeks, encouraging people in Ireland to drive our economy, support jobs and nurture our creative community in these uncertain times by purchasing Irish goods on one of the busiest shopping days of the year – the last Friday in November.

Previously, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been enthusiastically embraced by Irish consumers, with more than €50 million spent over the course of the weekend in 2018.

Speaking of the campaign, Marian O’Gorman, CEO of Kilkenny issued a passionate call to action to shoppers;

“Our survey of consumers shows that 84% prefer to buy from Irish suppliers."

“This does not surprise me as Irish brands and products are second to none and, as a nation, we have many that are leaders on a world stage.

“We, as consumers, need to appreciate the fundamental fact that by keeping money in circulation in our own communities, we are protecting jobs and public services,” added Marian O’Gorman.

Around €4.65 billion will be spent by Irish shoppers during the Christmas period, based on research from Retail Ireland. Green Friday is designed to remind consumers of the power that they yield and the effect their support has on the designers, makers and businesspeople of the country.

“Irish consumers are seeing more and more how buying locally made products from Ireland’s designers and makers is an inspired choice that helps our economy and our environment,” said Brian McGee, Market Development Director, Design & Crafts Council of Ireland.

Brands and businesses are encouraged to market their products under the Green Friday banner, highlighting the value of shopping locally.  Check out microsite goforgreenfriday.com which provides businesses with free downloadable marketing material.

Christmas is getting closer and we’re a little bit too excited about it. We’re more than ready to spend quality time with our nearest and dearest, eat nothing but turkey sandwiches and selection boxes and watch Love Actually every other day.

Most of our plans for the holiday season revolve around spending time in our pyjamas but we’ll obviously be spending time with the family too, just like The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The couple will be celebrating their first Christmas as parents and they’ve got some major plans in the diary for December.

Apparently, Harry and Meghan are planning on stepping away from their royal duties for a few weeks so they can visit Meghan’s mum in America.

It is believed the parents will fly out to the USA for Thanksgiving and plan on extending their break until after Christmas.

They have paused their royal duties for six weeks so they certainly will have plenty of time to enjoy Meghan’s homeland.

The royals tend to gather at Sandringham for Christmas, but reports claim Harry and Meghan may decline this year’s invitation.

Prince Harry has spent every Christmas with his grandmother and family, apart from 2012 as he was in Afghanistan.

The Sun claims that the couple wants to ‘recharge their batteries’ after a turbulent few months.

“They need some time away to recharge and decide their plans for next year,” a source told the publication.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to spend Christmas in Sandringham with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall and their extended family.

Harry Styles was also considered for the role but the Lights Up singer declined the part in the live-action movie because he is focusing on his music career.

The musician spoke to Capital Breakfast about why he didn’t accept the part, “I had, you know, a meeting with Rob Marshall the director, who is the most wonderful man, he’s great. And it was just, honestly, it was just a few things.”

A new research report launched today by safefood has revealed that chocolate is the main ingredient in almost 40 percent of protein bars surveyed, with many also being high in saturated fat and containing added sugar and salt. The research also found that over 1 in 3 people (37 percent) surveyed think protein bars are “healthy”.

When comparing current protein intakes among adults with what’s recommended, both men and women are already consuming more protein than they need from their diet.

The safefood research looked at the nutritional content of 83 high-protein snack foods and drinks available for sale in supermarkets on the island of Ireland. These foods included protein bars, yoghurts, yoghurt-style products and milk drinks. According to industry sources, there was a 498 percent increase in products launched between 2010 and 2016 with a high-protein claim.

Introducing the research, Dr Catherine Conlon, Director of Human Health & Nutrition, safefood said, “We’ve witnessed a significant and consistent upsurge in the number and variety of foods and drinks for sale which claim to be ‘high-protein’. From bars to milks and yoghurts, high-protein foods have now become mainstream in our supermarkets. When we asked people about protein bars, a third of them thought they were healthy. However, many of these bars are, in reality, highly processed foods with a calorie content similar to that of a bar of chocolate”.

“What’s also evident from dietary data is that men and women are already consuming more than enough protein in their diets and simply don’t need this extra, highly processed protein,” stated Dr Conlon.

Of the 39 protein bars surveyed, 38 percent listed chocolate as their main ingredient. 77 percent were high in saturated fat, with 79 percent being a source of salt. The average bar size was 55g with an average price of €2.27, though some bars cost as much as €3.00 each.

“Processed snack foods high in protein need to be combined with fat, sugar or salt in order to make them tasty,” continued Dr Conlon. “People would be better sticking to natural sources of protein in their diet, which tend to be much healthier. And if you need a source of protein as a snack, alternatives like some nuts, a small glass of milk or a yoghurt is the way to go instead of these foods with added chocolate.”
