Gay Byrne has passed away at the age of 85, RTÉ has confirmed.

RTÉ Director-General, Dee Forbes, today paid tribute to Mr. Byrne: “We are all greatly saddened by the passing of Gay Byrne who has been a household name in this country for so many years. Gay was an exceptional broadcaster whose unique and ground-breaking style contributed so much to the development of radio and television in this country.

"Gay’s journalistic legacy is as colossal as the man himself – he not only defined generations, but he deftly arbitrated the growth and development of a nation. Ireland grew up under Gay Byrne, and we will never see his like again. My deepest sympathies to Kathleen and his family.”

Born in Dublin on August 5, 1934, Gay Byrne grew up on the South Circular Road. He started work as a newsreader and continuity announcer on Radio Éireann in the late 1950's before moving to Granada Television in Manchester, where he worked on a variety of shows, interviewing acts including The Beatles.

For a time he commuted between Dublin and UK, working for both the BBC and RTÉ, but came back to Ireland full time in the late 1960’s as presenter and producer of The Late Late Show. The programme went on to become the world’s longest running chat show.

Gay Byrne also presented a long-running radio show on RTÉ Radio 1, first known as The Gay Byrne Hour and then The Gay Byrne Show. The show had a close relationship with its listeners, many of whom wrote to or phoned Gay to comment on the issues of the day, and with their own stories. He won a Jacob’s Award for the programme in 1976.

Love Island star Laura Anderson has opened up about her breast augmentation surgery in a beautifully honest post.

The reality star explained that she had recently decided to undergo a breast reduction. She had her first breast augmentation at the age of 18 but stressed that even though she was mentally mature for her age, she “really had no idea who I was or what I was doing to my body”.

Laura said that people aren’t warned about the impact surgery will have on you later in life.

“Here’s what they don’t tell you, every surgery has repercussions years down the line so this quick fix mentality which we all suffer from from time to time will most definitely come back to bite you in the ass.”

She stressed, “It's not like buying a pair of jeans that don’t fit so you just take them back. There's no refunds when it comes to interfering with our bodies.

“Being completely honest, after seeing myself on TV I realised that my chest looked way too big for my frame and after many shooting pains in my left boob I knew it was time for a change.

“My original implants were so large that over time I’ve actually stretched my skin and breast pocket so much that I was told my choices would now be limited. This is just something I would never have thought about all those years ago,” Laura admitted.

She even said that if she could go back in time then she wouldn’t have had the surgery.

“Having no implants and to be natural is honestly the person I feel inside. I just want to say to young girls or guys out there that think surgery is the answer to all their problems, just know the decision to go under the knife is huge and really has its consequences.”

“My message to you is yes fashion changes, but our bodies don’t need to!” she concluded.

Commuters are being encouraged to add walking to their daily commute.

The National Transport Authority and Healthy Ireland are launching a new pilot campaign today to help commuters achieve a healthier lifestyle.

The campaign is a first step in taking a more joined-up approach across Health and Transport, linking health and sustainable travel policy together for the benefit of the commuters. The pilot will be assessing what it is that will motivate commuters to introduce more physical activity into their daily routines.

By getting off a stop early or walking to a further stop while taking the bus, Luas, or train, commuters can add a ten-minute walk to their morning or evening routes. The short-term benefits are potentially reduced stress levels, a boost in energy, and improved concentration and mood.

Shane Ross TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport said: “I’m delighted to support this initiative. Small changes can make a big difference and making a small change in our daily commute can help us all to achieve a healthier lifestyle.”

Minister Simon Harris TD, added “The health benefits of walking are well-known and weaving a walk into your daily commute is the best way to make a habit of it and to make sure you’re fitting in your daily 30 minute recommendation. I encourage everyone to try to get on or off one stop earlier.

“I would like to acknowledge former Irish Heart Foundation CEO, Paddy Murphy and to thank him for initially bringing this idea to my attention. Paddy has long been an advocate for promoting healthier lives and initiated the well-known Sli na Slainte walks and we look forward to assessing the progression of this concept.”

Increasing physical activity can seem like a daunting task, especially in the colder months, but when you’re already out and on the way to work or college, it’s easier than you think to make small changes to established routines.

The pilot campaign will be found on transport advertising carried on bus, train and Luas routes throughout the greater Dublin area from November 3 to 16. The feedback from the pilot will inform further campaign activity.

More information can be found on Transport for Ireland’s website here.

Back in the day, hanging out in the pub with your parents and siblings was part and parcel of a Sunday afternoon.

After Mass had come to an end and the roast had been devoured, countless families in Ireland would retire to the local for the afternoon.

Looking back, it seems a little questionable, but at the time no one batted an eyelid, and you loved nothing more than getting your greasy mitts on a glass of coke and packet of peanuts,

And with that in mind, here are just 9 things you'll remember if you were on first-name basis with the middle-aged bartenders.

1. Pubs back in the 90s had a distinct smell which you just don't find anymore.

A mixture of secondhand smoke, Old Spice, and spilled Guinness was the scent of your childhood.

2. You and your siblings would drive your father demented trying to decide what 'mineral' and snack you'd like.

The packet of peanuts would be in your hand before you realised there were Bacon Fries to be had, and all hell broke loose.

3. After the second round, the pub was essentially yours for the taking.

Your parents didn't mind where you wandered as long as you didn't make a holy show of them, so you spent much of the day sitting beneath wobbly tables in a makeshift fort.

4. Hanging out in the jacks was (inexplicably) something to get excited about.

Brushing your hair with the comb that came in your Lucky Bag felt like the height of sophistication for a nine-year-old.

5. The same went for the pay phone in the porch.

If you were on the hunt for Call Cards, you knew you'd be in luck, and if you had a spare 20p you might even give your mate a buzz to fill them in on the latest.

6. Depending on the pub, you might get your hands on a purple Snack bar or (if you were in serious luck) a yellow Snack bar might find its way to your table.

You tended to favour the pubs which stocked up on confectionary with the same enthusiasm they stocked up on Guinness.

7. Despite the craic to be had in the jacks and the porch, there came a time when your interest in the local started to wane.

You might have been bribed with another glass of coke, but you knew the jig was up.

8. It took a good 15 minutes for the entire clan to walk home, so you'd start rallying the troops in order to catch your favourite TV show.

The Simpsons would be starting at 6pm, and this wasn't the time to mess around.

9. Getting your parents out of the bar always took longer than expected as they did the rounds and said goodbye to every damn person in the lounge.

"Will you either whist, or say hello to Barbara from the front of the estate."

Periods are already an absolute pain in the arse – in fact just thinking about that time of the month can make us feel stressed out.

However, new research indicates that the stress we feel on the day-to-day can contribute to an increase in the level of pain we feel during cramping week.

According to Women's Health Concern, around 80% of women experience period pain at some stage in their lifetime.

In 5% to 10% of women the pain is severe enough to disrupt their lives – from missing school, work or college due to pain, or being unable to attend social events or partake in sports or hobbies.

Now, research published in the Journal of Women's Health have found that there could be a link between the stress we feel in the weeks before our period, and the intensity of pain we feel.

PMS is a major pain, and the research found that women who said they were stressed in the two weeks before the start of their period were much more likely to describe their period as extremely painful.

In fact, up to four times as many women who were in the 'stressed' category said they had moderate to severe symptoms.

In 40% of women, period pain is accompanied by premenstrual symptoms, such as bloating, tender breasts, a swollen stomach, lack of concentration, mood swings, clumsiness and tiredness.

'Each woman is an individual, and some women may experience severe symptoms that require medications,' said the study's author.

'However, future studies may show that stress reduction techniques can prevent or reduce the severity of premenstrual syndrome, which might provide a cost effective alternative to medications for some women.'
