Yearly Archives: 2019

Research from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) has presented results on the graduates who are most likely to find a job after college.

Naturally, we were curious and had to check out the scores. Unsurprisingly, creative work seems fairly sparse *sighs*.

As it turns out, teachers are the most likely to find a job after they graduate, with over 93 percent of recent education grads finding employment within nine months of finishing their course.

The HEA's research found that graduates in areas such as health and welfare (87 percent), ICT (82 percent) and engineering (82 percent) had especially high employment outcomes.

Nearly 80 percent of third-level students secured work within nine months of graduating, which is good news.

The HEA found that students who studied subjects like philosophy and literature were the LEAST likely to be employed…sorry to all those deep thinkers and bookworms out there.

Anyone who completed their arts and humanities studies were actually among the highest percentages who embarked on further study, at 24 percent.

The study involved 29,000 participants who graduated back in 2017, and found that teaching grads are one of the best paid. Their starting salaries mostly came in at €30-€35,000.

The average salary of full-time graduates in employment was €33,574. The HEA's Valerie Harvey said that those who complete further study are the most employable.

She commented on the research, saying that; "The overwhelming majority of all graduates are working and as you move through the levels of educational attainment higher numbers are in employment."

She continued, "So we found that 75 percent of honours degree, 86 percent of post-graduate taught and 91 percent of postgraduate research graduates are in employment."

78 percent of those participants surveyed are working or due to begin a job, and 14 percent of those surveyed are in training or further education.

A further five percent are searching for work, and the remainder are in "further activities", like travelling the world or saving the turtles. Apparently, 90 percent of those who graduate find a job in Ireland. That one surprised us, alright.

When it comes to fake tan, Ireland as a nation definitely has a reputation for loving the stuff.

Whether it's a full body bronze spray tan for a night out, or a quick splash on tanning water for a golden complexion, rarely are Irish women without a faux glow.

In a recent study conducted by Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter, it revealed that a staggering 95 percent of women wear fake tan throughout the winter months.

Most Irish women like to tan from head to toe, with 71.3 percent saying an all over glow is key.

However, we have all been in that rushed situation where you want to add a tan but simply don't have the time to do the full body.

25 percent of women admitted to only tanning their arms and legs, while 5.7 percent of women just tan their ankles.

As for when Irish women like to tan – one day of the week reigned supreme.

A whopping half of all people surveyed said that Thursday is their traditional tanning day.

It makes perfect sense – tan on Thursday night, shower it off on Friday to reveal a gorgeous glow just in time for the weekend.

So we all love brunch, it's become a bit of a Sunday institution.

There is nothing better than tucking into a perfect plate of Insta-worthy poached eggs.

Now, we don't even have to justify our Sunday foodie splurging, because brunch is good for your health, as discovered by Real Simple

5. Brunch foods often include healthy ingredients.

Eggs, avocados, salmon and whole meal toast make up some of the most popular brunch dishes.

All of these fresh ingredients are chock-a-block full of protein, nutrients and healthy fats, so get that perfect avocado toast picture and bask in your smug healthy glow.

That being said, we'll still be opting for fluffy pancakes and Belgian waffles occasionally.

4. You get your beauty sleep.

Making sure your body gets all the sleep it needs is important, so rather than getting up for breakfast, sleeping in for brunch could actually be good for you.

Sleep is involved in the healing and repair processes of the body, including of the heart and blood vessels.

Sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

3. Socialising is good for the mental health.

Humans are social creatures, and brunch brings people together.

"Interacting with others boosts feelings of well-being and decreases feelings of depression. Research has shown that one sure way of improving your mood is to work on building social connections," according to Psychology Today

2. Getting out of the house is full of health benefits.

It's good to actually leave the house during the weekend to do something other than party.

Strolling to your local bistro for brunch is a good way to incorporate a few extra minutes of exercise, and getting some sunlight on that Irish pallor is necessary for a well needed vitamin D boost.

1. Brunch is well balanced

Most brunch meals have a good mix of carbs, proteins and healthy fats.

A multi-faceted brunch meal is often much healthier and provides you with better nutrients all round than grabbing something quick for breakfast and lunch.

The Duchess of Sussex has achieved so much in the past year. She made history by becoming the first ever guest editor of British Vogue’s September issue. She worked with incredible charities and welcomed her baby boy, Archie.

However, instead of celebrating Meghan’s achievements, people have chosen to belittle the new mum yet again and it just has to stop.

Meghan has gone from being adored by the British press to swiftly becoming the ‘bratty’ member of the royal family whose feminist and left-of-centre views are too much for the red tops to handle.

They have slated the new mum in every way possible in recent months. She was branded a diva and accused of treating her staff poorly. She was slated for looking tired despite the fact that she had just welcomed a baby. She was pitted against the Duchess of Cambridge and rumours about the pair’s supposed feud were inescapable.

Meghan was mum-shamed within moments of making her first public appearance with baby Archie. They complain when she doesn’t attend events and accuse her of being attention seeking when she does.

It seems like the former Suits actress simply cannot win, no matter what she does.

Would it have been easier for Meghan to don an overpriced dress and grin for the cover of British Vogue’s September issue? Yes, but instead the mum curated an issue, alongside Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful and his team, that has made history, days before it’s publication date.

Meghan was offered to appear on the cover of the renowned fashion magazine, but politely declined, admitting that she felt it would be too boastful. Instead she gave 15 iconic women who will undoubtedly inspire the readers of one of Britain’s most iconic publications.

All of these women have important and empowering stories to share and the Duchess of Sussex generously gave them the opportunity to grace the cover and share their stories amongst the pages of the glossy magazine.

The Forces for Change issue has given these women a voice in a world that so quickly silences women for being different, especially women like Meghan Markle.

The Duchess stepped aside and let them share their words of wisdom. She was selfless, encouraging and incredibly kind in this act, so why do people feel the need to call her attention seeking, arrogant and stuck up?

Image result for british vogue september 2019

Why do people fail to appreciate and acknowledge all of the momentous things she has achieved since joining the royal family?

Do these people just prefer to hate, criticise and downplay every single thing Meghan does? Does it make them feel better? Do they get a kick out of belittling a woman who has given up her privacy, and any ounce of normality for love?

The never-ending hatred aimed at the Duchess of Sussex needs to stop, because regardless of her royal title, she is still a human.

The Duke of Sussex has had quite an overwhelming few weeks. The new dad recently honoured his mum’s legacy during his trip to Africa and has worked tirelessly to ensure Princess Diana’s memory is always remembered and recently opened up about her in an ITV documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey.

In a harrowing preview clip, Harry said his mum’s death is a “wound that festers."

Harry discussed his troubled relationship with the media in the clip and admitted that their presence often reminds them of his mum’s untimely passing.

Prince Harry said, “I think [of] being part of this family, in this role, in this job every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash. It takes me straight back, so in that respect it's the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best."

The Duke of Sussex added, “Being here now 22 years later, trying to finish what she started will be incredibly emotional but everything that I do reminds me of her. But as I said, with the role, with the job, and the sort of the pressures that come with that, I get reminded of the bad stuff usually."

Prince Harry recently revealed he was going to sue the Mail On Sunday for publishing Meghan’s personal letters. The dad stressed that he didn’t want history to repeat itself.

He stated, “Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”

I have never heard a silence more deafening than the final moments of Asking for It. The world stopped in a moment of horror and icy realism, like a brutal slap. The actor who played the lead had us choked quietly with her words and her pale complexion against the darkened set.

I was terrified, and I wasn’t the only one. The room erupted in a burst of raw emotion as the audience fell apart. When the lights came on, The Gaiety Theatre was a sea of desperate humans clinging to each other, shoulders shaking and tears streaming.

It's safe to say that Asking for It was one of the most powerful pieces of art I have ever experienced. I say experienced because this play is not something you simply see. It’s something you feel and hear, inside and out as you watch. It is immersion of the most immersive, and it buries you alive until you can’t think of anything else.

I had read the book, so I felt like I was prepared for the harrowing tale of Emma, the teenager from a fictional rural Irish town, obsessed with her image and social status. I was prepared for her story, the crude public sexual assault she experiences and her little town’s inability to deal with it.

Image result for asking for it book

Louise O'Neill's novel had floored me, but nothing could have prepared me for seeing it brought to life.

The play is a magnificent jigsaw of elements that create an eerily close-to-home picture. The kitchen where her family sit and watch their lives fall apart is alive with Irishness, the sound of rain smashing against the windows and the white noise of the radio humming angrily in the background.

The school scenes are beyond accurate: lads flinging dirty white footballs overhead and girls draped over each other with a familiarity that only the Irish school system could inspire. A recording of the protagonist's inner monologue- Cork accent and all- coupled with a harsh spotlight on her pale face, meant there was no escape for the spectator.

We lived and breathed Emma and her world for 2 hours and 55 minutes.

Photo: The Gaiety Theatre

Emma’s story is about all of us. It’s about every single Irish girl who wore an itchy uniform and sat on walls with boys in football jerseys. About mothers and fathers who react the only way they know how when their child is brought so low. Every person in the room could seem themselves on stage in some shape or form. Each glance, stare and comment by the characters was all too familiar.

Asking for It is a brave, raw and uncomfortable piece of art that everyone should see.

The play will run in the Gaiety Theatre until Saturday, October 26. There are still tickets available here.

We are channelling all our girl power energy into our Halloween costumes this year. There’s no better group of people to dress up with than your gals so we’ve conjured up a list of the greatest girl gangs in history.

We’ll feature girl gangs from the 1980s to modern day queens who rule the world.

The Heathers:

The 1989 flick features one of the quirkiest and (meanest) girl gangs in cinema history. Gather up the gang and rock those iconic blazers with padded shoulders, the backcombed hair and don’t forget your scrunchie.

The Original Disney Princesses:

Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel and Belle are the OG Disney gals so why not step into the magical world of Disney this Halloween. Plus, you’ll certainly stand out from the crowd because there’s no doubt everyone will be dressing up as Elsa again this year.

The Barden Bellas:

Pitch Perfect is a movie that celebrates female friendship and supports people who sing ALL the time- we couldn’t love it more if we tried. The perk of dressing up as the Bellas means you can randomly sing all night long because it’s ‘part of the costume’.

The Derry Girls

National heroes. Icons. Irish legends. Who wouldn't want to dress up as Erin, Clare, Michelle, Orla and of course, the wee English fella.

Related image

Rachel, Phoebe and Monica:

Embrace that glorious 90s style by dressing up as the Friends gals with your two closest girls. We’ve always dreamed of rading Rachel’s iconic wardrobe and now we can.

Clueless:

The shops are full of plaid EVERYTHING at the moment so putting this outfit together will be simple. Find the most flawless plaid skirt suit and feel free to mutter ‘Ugh, as if’ to anyone who asks who you're supposed to be.

The Pink Ladies:

We're ending with one of the original girl gangs- the Pink Ladies. Go back in time to the 60s and channel your inner Frenchie or Rizzo with this old-school look. And remember, don’t forget your neck scarf.

Tesco Ireland and McVitie’s today announced details of a new partnership that sees both brands donating 10c to Temple Street for every pack of McVitie’s biscuits sold in Tesco stores and online over the next four weeks.

All funds raised will help Temple Street to purchase eight new beds and mattresses for a vital new ward, which consists of eight isolation rooms for treating Temple Street’s most vulnerable patients.

The promotion will run across all packs of McVitie’s biscuits for the next four weeks until November 12 and will be supported by in store POS and social media to remind customers that when they are enjoying a well-earned biscuit break, they will be helping to raise vital funds for Temple Street.

Emma Barrett, Head of Corporate Development, Temple Street Foundation said: “We’re so grateful to Tesco Ireland and McVitie’s for their support. Every pack sold will play its part in helping us to continue to provide life-saving treatment and facilities for sick children in Ireland.”

Niamh Twyford, Head of Marketing at McVitie’s said “McVitie’s wants to take this moment to give back. This partnership with Tesco Ireland is about encouraging people to recognise the work that the incredible staff of Temple Street do to help sick children in Ireland. It means while enjoying an 11 o’clock break or an after-dinner cup of tea and biscuit, consumers can know they have also helped in raising much needed funds for Temple Street.”

Each year Temple Street treats over 150,000 children from across the country and operates the busiest A&E department in Europe. For thousands of children, Temple Street is the only hospital in Ireland in which they can be treated. Through the charity partner programme, Tesco colleagues and customers can help little people from all over Ireland get better and be real life heroes to children attending the hospital.

Temple Street has been Tesco Ireland’s charity partner since October 2014 and to-date Tesco Ireland has raised €4.5 million in aid of the little heroes of Temple Street.

The couple welcomed another daughter, but have yet to disclose her name.

Ryan confirmed the news by sharing a gorgeous photo of his family. Blake and the Deadpool actor look as happy as ever in the photo. Their little girl is snuggled between her two parents but Ryan carefully covered up her face.

The dad was encouraging fellow Canadians to vote in an upcoming election when he revealed the sex of their baby;

‘I love B.C. I want my daughters to experience the same natural playground I grew up in. On Oct. 21, the candidate you vote for will SHAPE CLIMATE POLICY. I’m proud of the climate progress made the last 4 years.’

The actors are notoriously private about their personal lives and rarely share family photos on social media.

Gossip Girl alum, Blake confirmed her third pregnancy when she joined her husband at the premiere of Detective Pikachu in May.

The actors are already parents to two little girls-three-year-old Inez and four-year-old James. We’re sure their daughter will be well looked after with two big sisters to take care of her.
