Job Hunting in 2019: Two Must-Know Tips

For those seeking employment in the modern era, times have changed from the world the older generation once knew. Decades ago, jobs were typically found by going into a business and asking whether they had any vacancies or having a connection already within a company, whether that was a family member or a friend. With the introduction of the online world, however, job hunting has truly transformed. Job seekers in 2019 now have a range of tools at their disposable, each designed to aid the job hunt for the better. If you are looking for a new opportunity, the below guide will highlight the two tips you need to know and what you need to focus on to secure your dream job.

Your CV

Whether you’re applying for a new position online or you’re handing out your CV in person, this vital document needs to be impressive, professional, and above all, sell you as a hardworking, reliable individual any business would be lucky to hire. How do you sum yourself, your education, and your experience up in a clear and concise way? It is generally agreed that a CV shouldn’t be longer than two sides of A4 paper. Any longer than this and employers and recruiters won’t have time to read it. After all, recruiters spend only 6 seconds browsing a CV before deciding whether to pursue the candidate or not. That means your personal summary at the start needs to sell yourself quickly and simply. It’s for this reason why creating an elevator pitch for yourself is a worthwhile task. This short, snappy description should showcase who you are and what you do best in a short amount of time, or space when it’s typed. What’s more, it can also be used in an interview scenario. However, it’s not just what you write on your CV which counts. It also needs to be well-designed. If your CV is messy and cluttered, it will quickly land in the discarded pile. Using a CV template is a wise idea because these have been designed with professionalism and with a keen understanding of what a recruiter wants to see. If you’re looking for expert tips on how to write a CV, the team at LiveCareer have created a handy CV builder to assist with building and designing the perfect CV.

Networking

With the rigid online recruitment process for the majority of jobs, you may not be able to walk straight into a business and secure a job, but this doesn’t make networking any less important. Networking, with the right people, can open doors you may not have considered before. Professional networking takes into account a number of aspects, but essentially, it’s focused on making key contacts and nurturing relationships which can lead to job prospects. In the digital era, one smart and easy way to network is to sign up to the professional social network, LinkedIn, and make connections on there. Ensure you follow relevant professionals in your chosen industry, whether that’s digital marketing, web development, accounting, compliance, health and safety, and more, and join in conversations. By doing so, you not only stand to gain contacts in your field, but you can also learn a lot from experienced professionals.

Job hunting in the digital era is not wildly different from decades ago; networking is still crucial, and your CV is a vital document you need to perfect. However, the way you present yourself has transformed with the birth of the internet and the introduction of job search engines. By taking into account the above two tips, you will set yourself up as a promising job seeker, with a range of opportunities available to you.

How To Choose The Right Tattoo

Choosing a tattoo can be a challenge, especially when you don’t know where you want to get tattooed and you love so many different designs and ideas. Naturally, getting a new tattoo is an important decision, and there are many factors to consider.

From picking the right tattoo to deciding on where to get that tattoo to style, color and meaning, this guide will help you choose the right tattoo for you.

Picking The Best Tattoo

Choosing a tattoo can be life-changing since you’ll have it imprinted on your body for the rest of your life. On that note, it’s ideal to go with something that has a deeper meaning to you rather than with a popular design all the cool kids are getting.

However, note that we said that it should mean something to you. In other words, you can definitely go for something whimsical or out of the box, as long as it brings you joy. Like a cartoon character, a quote from your favorite movie, or a scene from a video game.

Just remember that tattoos don’t have to be large and out there for everyone to see. Some of the best ideas are cool small, simple tattoos meant just for you.

Avoid Names

As for tattoos to avoid, we advise against getting the name of a loved one on your body, unless the relationship is incredibly serious. In other words, don’t get a tattoo of a partner you’ve only been dating for a month.

If the loved one is dead or your child, then the name is a safe choice. Otherwise, we would recommend caution. You can cover the name with another tattoo in the future if you no longer like it (it’s cheaper than removal), but that’s a hassle you don’t need.

Family Can Be A Safe Choice

If you’re getting a matching tattoo with a loved one, settle on a simple design that appeals to both of you. They don’t have to be identical, but they should go well together. When getting a tattoo with a member of the family, you can go for the last name of for a family symbol. If you’re getting inked with a friend or partner, choose something that is relevant for your relationship.

Consult Your Tattoo Artist

Besides checking the artist’s portfolio or browsing online for tattoo ideas, you can also try coming up with your own, unique design. Artists are generally open to working with your throughout the process to make sure you’ll be happy with the end result.

As long as you’re settled on a concept and have an idea about what you’re looking for, they can also make design-related suggestions that will bring the tattoo to the next level.

Research The Meaning

Just make sure to also consider how your tattoo will be perceived by the rest of the world. Is it something that may offend certain people or can mean something bad in another culture? This especially applies to Asian symbols.

The characters may not mean (only) what you thing they mean, so it’s best to double-check with a native speaker before getting one inked on your body.

Where To Get A Tattoo

Finally, make sure to consider placement before settling on a cute design. A discreet quote tattoo can look mesmerizing on the collarbone, but won’t have the same visual impact on your leg.

An intricate pattern/design can be eye-grabbing on the sleeve or chest, but can look less masterful on the foot since there’s less room to play with.

Also, tattoo artists are unlikely to ink visible areas of your body like the hands or face if you don’t have one or more tattoos already. Better start with something less extreme during your first visit and see how it goes.

What Tattoo Should I Get?

Tattoo designs ultimately come down to personal preference. That being said, it’s smart to consider a variety of factors before taking the leap. Besides the tips listed above, here are some other things to weight prior to scheduling an appointment with a tattoo artist.

Why Do You Want A Tattoo?

This is the fundamental question you should ask yourself before getting inked. Everyone has their own reasons for getting a tattoo, but there are some common causes that push most women and men to finally do it. Tattoos can help you express your personality or creativity.

Some get tattoos to celebrate a special milestone in life, signal their allegiance to a community, or pay homage to a loved one. Others get inked simply because tattoos are a work of art and are beautiful to look at, which is completely fine. If any of your reasoning is among these lines, good.

However, if you’re doing it because of peer pressure, because everybody has one, because it’s trendy, or because you’re bored, you might want to wait for a while longer before taking the plunge. A tattoo is a permanent mark on your body. You want to be 100% sure you’re ready for that before getting inked. Plus, the healing process is no joke.

Consider Where To Get A Tattoo

As we’ve already mentioned, some tattoos work best for certain areas of the body. Yet, there are other things to think about as well as far as placement is concerned.

  • Do you want to be able to hide your tattoo or have it visible all the time?
  • Do you want the tattoo to be eye-grabbing or discreet?
  • Would your workplace be OK with you showing up one day with a full tattoo sleeve?

High-maintenance tattoos are usually those on parts of the body that aren’t always covered – like the arms and legs. These can be affected by sunlight and fade over time, which means that they may need touch-ups.

On the other hand, back, shoulder, and chest tattoos are low-maintenance, since they are usually covered by clothes.

Similarly, you need to consider how your body will change as you get older. For instance, getting a tattoo on your abdomen may look awesome now if you have a six-pack. However, if you gain weight in a few years the design may look distorted. You won’t have this problem with a back tattoo or minimalist design that works anywhere.

Talk with your artist – they should be able to list the pros and cons associated with the placement you want.

How To Choose The Best Tattoo Designs

Make sure the design is something that speaks to you – it represents something you love or are attached to. It’s fine to check online or browse artists’ portfolios for inspiration, but don’t restrict yourself to designs that are already out there. If you have an idea for a unique tattoo, talk it over with the artist and come up with something together.

It’s also a good idea to test how you feel with the tattoo before getting it. This can mean simply drawing it with a marker on your body to get a feel for the final result. Or, get a henna tattoo on the body part you’re considering. These only last for about week, but can help you decide if you’re ready for the real thing.

Pick A Good Artist

The first thing you can do to make sure you’ll end up with a talented and professional tattoo artist is to ask around. Word of mouth recommendations are best, since you can hear from people who actually went through the experience. Checking the artist’s portfolio and looking up online reviews is also wise.

Plus, visit the studio in person before booking an appointment to check out the level of hygiene and see if you’re compatible with the artist. As long as their work makes you excited, you’re on the right track!

Ways to Advance in Your Healthcare Career

Healthcare can be a rewarding industry to enter and offers a variety of roles to suit all personalities and backgrounds. To enjoy great success in the sector, you must wake up every day with a passion and commitment to improving the health of others and supporting patient standards.

It doesn’t matter if you are a doctor, nurse, surgeon, porter or administrative assistant, your small or large actions will make a big difference to a hospital or medical practice.

However, the industry can be competitive and you might be unsure how you could quickly progress in the sector. If you want to stand out from your colleagues and secure a promotion or a brand-new role, you should read the below eighteen ways to advance in your healthcare career.

1. Define a Clear and Realistic Career Path
If you want to quickly advance in your career, so you can enjoy a greater salary and job satisfaction, you must define your career goals to provide yourself with a clear path to success.
While it will undoubtedly take a great deal of patience and hard work to climb the healthcare ladder, a rock-solid focus and perseverance could one day make your dream a reality. So, identify the additional education or experience you might need to secure to reach your goals.

2. Ignore Industry Stereotypes
Many medical professionals have preconceptions of various professions or public and private healthcare sectors when entering a role. Yet, holding onto these stereotypes could hold you back in your career. Most of the time, the perception will be based on a myth or a misunderstanding.
Rather than believing everything you hear, you should put the stereotypes to one side to enhance in your career. For example, you could work in both the public and private sector to increase your salary, network with many professionals and gain additional experience.

3. Consider a Sideways Step
While you might be eager to climb the healthcare ladder, you shouldn’t be afraid to take a sideways step should the right opportunity become available. For example, you could leave the public sector for the same or a similar role in a private medical practice.
While it might not seem like a progressive step, it could provide you with greater experience in the industry, boost your skill-set and allow to form influential connections in your career. So, the move could open the door to many future opportunities, which could help you to advance in your career at a faster rate.

4. Improve Your Communication Skills
Communication is key in any healthcare setting, as patients’ health and safety will be a primary importance. To impress your supervisors and colleagues, you must improve your communication skills, as it will allow others to excel in their roles and can support a hospital or medical practice’s internal standards.
For example, you must clearly communicate a topic or task to others and demonstrate emotional stability, as a supervisor will only consider advancing employees who can remain calm in every event and thrive under pressure.

5. Gain Additional Training
If you want to enjoy greater job satisfaction and a larger annual income, you always have the option to embark on additional training. For example, if you are currently an RN or BSN-prepared nurse, you could train to become a family nurse practitioner, who will typically earn a bigger base salary and can enjoy productivity bonuses and incentive payments.

You also could secure training in your spare time by enrolling in an online degree, which has been designed to enhance your nursing skills and can help you to advance in your career. Find out more about a BSN to MSN-FNP program.

6. Discuss Your Ambition
Most medical settings will promote employee development and they might even be willing to provide continuing training to ambitious, capable staff. For this reason, you should communicate your career goals with members of management, who could offer valuable advice and support to help you secure a promotion.

7. Continually Boost Your Knowledge
It is important to never stop learning when you work in the healthcare sector. In addition to embarking on additional training, you should regularly read various medical reports and publications, which will allow you to learn more about emerging health issues, medical advancements and innovative technologies.
You also could attend seminars, shadow supervisors and take classes to expand your professional skillset. After all, the healthcare industry is constantly evolving, so your knowledge and expertise could support patient care and impress members of management.

8. Embrace Your Current Position
While you might have tunnel vision when it comes to your career, you should avoid becoming too focused on your goals or you could miss out on potential opportunities in your current role. While it is wise to look to the future, you should embrace the existing experience to build on your skill set, form connections and learn vital lessons.

9. Learn from Your Supervisors
If you want to follow in your supervisors’ footsteps, you must aim to learn from their example. For instance, you could attempt to embody their work ethic, demeanor, academic experience and knowledge level, which could help you to flourish in your career. By using a member of management’s experience as a professional guide, you could quickly impress your supervisor and reach your goals at a faster rate.

10. Don’t Be Won Over by Appearances
Before embarking on additional training to rise through the ranks, you should thoroughly research your desired career. While a position might look glamorous from the outside, it could come with a great amount of pressure and responsibilities, which might not be an ideal fit for your personality. Never choose a career path based on appearances and always make an informed decision by talking to professionals in the role, which will ensure you don’t come to regret your choice down the road.

11. Take Your Responsibilities Seriously
Every medical professional must take their responsibilities seriously each day, as a patient’s health and wellbeing can be determined by their actions. If you are assigned a task by a member of management, you must approach it with maturity and professionalism.
If, however, you fail at the task, you must avoid passing blame, take accountability for your actions and sincerely apologise. It will prove to a supervisor that you have a good character and are willing to shoulder responsibility, which could paint you in a better light.

12. Build a Strong Network
Networking isn’t just for entrepreneurs and sales representatives. If you want to climb the healthcare ladder with ease, you should aim to build a strong network. By gaining many contacts in your industry, you will be able to learn from their successes, request their career advice and potentially receive a recommendation for an upcoming position, which could help you to secure your dream role in a public or private hospital or clinic.

13. Stop Procrastinating
Many people are guilty of procrastinating in the workplace, but it can prevent them from advancing in their career. To prove you deserve a promotion or pay raise, you must show management that you can remain on top of various tasks.
For example, you will need to:
• Organise tasks by priority
Avoid multitasking to improve attention to detail
• Complete a job in a timely manner and to a high standard
So, whenever you feel the urge to procrastinate, remind yourself that it could slow you down in your career. Instead, you must aim to work through every task on your to-do list to highlight to management that you can tackle small and large responsibilities with ease.

14. Maintain Your Motivation
No-one can deny that the healthcare industry can be demanding. It doesn’t matter if you are a phlebologist, a doctor, nurse or receptionist, you can expect to work long hours and experience multiple challenges each working day. As a result, it can be easy to feel drained of passion for your role and tired once your shift is complete.
Rather than allowing a hard working day to dull your ambition, you must maintain your focus and motivation. Remind yourself why you entered the medical sector in the first place, which was more than likely to improve the lives of others and support patient care. It can prevent a bad day from detracting from your focus and will ensure you remain on the right path.

15. Improve Your Soft Skills
While medical degrees and experience might be essential in your chosen career, you also shouldn’t underestimate the importance of growing your soft skills.
If you want to stand out among your colleagues, receive glowing feedback from patients and impress your supervisors throughout the years, you must develop:
• Empathy – it will allow you to embrace situations with sensitivity and understanding.
• Adaptability – the ability to thrive under pressure and adapt to unique challenges.
A positive mental attitude – the right outlook can create an optimistic atmosphere for both patients and staff.
• Time management – an essential skill as lives could depend on your timekeeping skills.
• Self-confidence – projecting an air of confidence can make patients feel confident in your ability and experience.
• An ability to accept criticism – the healthcare industry is constantly changing and you must be willing to embrace constructive criticism to learn and grow.

16. Find a Mentor
A mentor can provide informative advice on the next best steps to take in your career, such as the best training opportunities to embrace, the experience you should aim to acquire, and the industry events you should attend to grow your skillset.
What’s more, they could introduce you to key people within your chosen field, who could prove integral to your career. Plus, you will have an opportunity to pick their brains to learn from their experience and mistakes.

17. Be a Team Player
Despite being eager to rise through the ranks in the healthcare sector, you must learn to work well with your colleagues. Collaboration is an essential factor in the medical industry, as patients’ lives depend on clear communication and teamwork.
To enjoy a promising career, you must become a joy to work with and strive to help others resolve problems, rather than creating them or complaining each day. Also, by becoming a team player, your co-workers will be more likely to support you throughout your career and lend a helping hand as and when you need it.

18. Care for Your Own Health
As mentioned, the sector can be exceptionally demanding, as you could experience long shifts, tough tasks, and difficult patients each day. As a result, you might be tempted to reach for junk food at the end of a working day or might even stay up late to make the most of your spare time.
However, this can be a big mistake, as it could lead to poor energy levels, a low mood and poor concentration once you return to the workplace. It is, therefore, beneficial to care for your health and wellbeing each day.
For example, you must enjoy:
A healthy, balanced diet (such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean meats and limited trans and saturated fats)
• A minimum of seven hours of sleep per night
• Drink plenty of water
The above tips will allow you to recover quickly from a gruelling shift, so you can return to work filled with passion and energy. It will also ensure you provide patients with the highest standard of care.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are a number of factors you should consider when attempting to climb the healthcare career ladder. In addition to obtaining additional training to secure a promotion, you also might need to work on your soft skills and should aim to build a strong network within the sector.
It’s important to be aware that your actions in the workplace can also determine whether you qualify for a promotion. For example, you must strive to become a team player, communicate clearly with your peers and patients, avoid procrastination, and learn from your supervisors’ example.

By following the above tips, you could soon make your professional dreams a reality, which can lead to greater job satisfaction, a larger income and increased self-confidence in your ability.

Pieta House are calling on clubs, companies and individuals to do something that makes them “FeelGood” and create a positive atmosphere inside and outside the workplace this October to raise vital funds for the charity. Last year over 200 participants took part in ‘FeelGood with Pieta’. Participants raised funds and created awareness by organising yoga classes, lunchtime walks, with some people going the extra mile and tackling the 500km Camino Walk across Spain and France, all in support of ‘FeelGood with Pieta’.

The funds raised for ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ have a direct impact on the service users, as they help ensure the doors remain open and the services provided by Pieta House remain free. ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ ambassadors and well-known household names for the campaign include chef, Derry Clarke, international rugby players, Jack McGrath and Hannah Tyrell, and actor, Moe Dunford.

‘FeelGood with Pieta’ ambassador Derry Clarke, said; “I am delighted to be taking part in ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ again this October. It’s all about taking the time and reminding yourself how good you can feel, reaching out to others and enjoying time together.”

This year, ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ is expanding its outreach across two weeks from October 14 to 27 to encourage people to create and register their own style of event, by doing something that makes them “FeelGood”. Pieta have outlined three pillars to use as inspiration for ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ events:

Connect – Focus on making time to re-connect with friends and family. Alternatively, make an effort to meet new people in your community/workplace. Organise a coffee morning in aid of Pieta House and invest time in building on existing relationships or creating new ones.

Be Active – Get yourself moving. Go for a run with a friend, get out of the office for an hour and enjoy a lunchtime yoga class. Getting active doesn’t have to mean running a marathon. Something as a simple as a lunchtime walk or organising a steps challenge amongst peers is a certain way to create healthy competition and get a daily dose of exercise, while having fun!

Feel Good – Organise an event that will help you and friends feel good. Host a movie night with close friends, suggest a ‘Raffle an annual leave day’ competition to your boss. Hold an event that will instil positivity and a feeling of contentment amongst colleagues and friends.

Speaking about the fundraising initiative, Elaine Austin, CEO of Pieta House, said; “The ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ campaign is an amazing opportunity for people to get active and take small steps towards improving their own mental health as well as raising vital funds for Pieta House to keep our doors open and services free for all. ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ is about taking the time to reconnect with friends, work colleagues or family members in a fun and uplifting way. We are extremely grateful for all donations and hope that the ‘FeelGood with Pieta’ initiative will encourage people to get out, have fun and spread awareness for an important cause.”

EY Ireland, which fundraises for Pieta House on a year-round basis, believes that employee wellbeing is crucial to the health and happiness of any workplace. Following the launch of the campaign, Ian Collins, EY’s Health & Vitality Partner Sponsor since 2018 said: “At EY, we place the health and wellbeing of our employees at the centre of our business. They are our greatest asset and we are committed to continually striving to improve their experience as employees so that their physical, mental and emotional needs are factored into everything that we do, and each of the supports that we provide.”

Since 2006, over 48,000 people have been through the Pieta House doors in a state of crisis, and with over 80% of funding coming from the public, support is vital to help continue this lifesaving work.

Pieta House, which started as a small, Dublin-based charity in 2006 with just one centre with four staff, has now expanded to 15 centres employing over 270 therapists and administrative staff nationwide. From day one, all of the services it provides have been offered completely free of charge.

1. The Addams Family, 1991

To start things off, we gotta have the most famous Halloween fam of all time.

A dysfunctional family at it's best, there is a disembodied hand called Thing, a cousin called It that is completely covered in hair and creepy Uncle Fester.

Plus, it's gives us costumes for even the laziest person – Wednesday Addams anyone?

2. Halloween I and II, 1978 and 1981

The original slasher flick, John Carpenter's masterpieces brought us the legend that is Jamie Lee Curtis in her breakout role as a Scream Queen.

It's the typical Halloween fare – babysitters getting stalked by a masked man who wants to butcher them all. Throw in the super creepy musical score and you've got yourself the perfect autumn night in.

3. Halloweentown, 1998

Who didn't watch this Disney classic as a kid? It's cheesy and a bit cringey but who cares.

Debbie Reynolds is a delight as the witch who comes to tell her teen granddaughter that she too has magical powers. It's the ideal movie to put on and let your brain switch off – we dare you to watch and not feel a twinge of nostalgia.

4.  The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 1975

This cult classic has midnight shows still running today where fans dress up as the characters and sing along to the songs.

Tim Curry is genius as Dr Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist who lures innocent couple, Brad and Janet into his castle.

Amazing music ensues and there's even an appearance from Meatloaf.

5. Teen Witch, 1989

This forgotten gem is so 80's it hurts. Available on Netflix, it follows teen Louise as she realises her witchy skills on her 16th birthday (Yes, just like Sabrina)

Watch it even just for the ridiculously dated rap battle plonked in the middle of the movie that adds nothing to the plot.

6. Double Double, Toil and Trouble, 1993

Disney. 1990's. Olsen Twins. Halloween. We're in heaven.

This movie tells the tale that on Halloween night, two precocious little girls try to save their parents from their scary aunt.

It's the perfect slice of magical nostalgia to make you wish you could go trick-or-treating again.

7. The Witches, 1990

This movie genuinely terrified me as a kid.

Adapted from Roald Dahls' book, it follows an orphan, Luke, who sees a coven of witches and discovers that they want  to turn all children into mice with a magical formula.

The witches find out that Luke is onto them and plan to test the formula on him. It's quite freaky, tbh.

9. Practical Magic, 1998

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman playing supernatural sisters, who are trying to end a family curse that keeps them from finding true love? Yes please.

10. Carrie, 1976

It wouldn't be a Halloween movie list without at least one nod to Stephen King.

And Carrie is one of his best – following a bullied high school teenager, who has a nutty religious mum and is delighted to be asked to prom by hottie Tommy Ross. When a prank goes wrong, she lets loose.

The whole prom scene is magnificent rom start to finish.

11. The Witches of Eastwick, 1987

Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon – name a more iconic trio, I dare you.

They have each lost the man in their lives until a stranger in the form of Jack Nicholson starts to date them all and eventually tells them that they are witches

Alesha and her husband, Azuka Ononye are over the moon by the arrival of their second child together. The couple, who have been married since 2017, have known one another for over a decade.

Alesha told You magazine that she always wanted a big family, but she was unsure about conceiving at 41-years-old.

"I don't know whether it will happen given my age but I adore the idea of a large family and I hope I will be lucky,” she shared.

We couldn’t be happier for the former Strictly Come Dancing judge. 2019 has certainly been quite the special year for Alesha.
