Yearly Archives: 2019

You can’t deny the Christmas spirit is creeping in. One of the best things about the holidays is the heavenly amounts of sweet treats in stores.

We’ve already had to stop ourselves from buying selection boxes with the weekly shop.

However, this new addition to the Lindt collection is going to be impossible to say no to.

In honour of the festive period, Lindt are releasing a limited edition chocolate and it just sounds too good to be true.

They’re launching a milk chocolate Lindor with a white chocolate truffle centre. If anyone needs us we’ll be drooling for the foreseeable future.

The product description reads, ‘This Christmas, indulge in Lindor Milk with White truffles – delicious Lindt milk chocolate enrobing delectably smooth white centres. Perfect for sharing, entertaining and gift giving.’

We honestly can’t see ourselves sharing a box of these with anyone, sorry.

Christmas is all about indulging and treating yourself to the finer things in life so we’ll certainly be ordering a box or two (or ten) of these new Lindor goodies ahead of the Christmas break.

They are currently available in Tesco so be fast. There’s no doubt they’ll be sold out in a blink of an eye.

Lucy admitted the first three months of her pregnancy weren’t easy; “My journey hasn’t been plain sailing. The first three months have been pretty brutal and quite lonely as you can’t really talk about it and feel like you're lying to everyone constantly.

However, the expectant-mum is feeling confident about her body, “For the first time I feel content in myself and how I view my body. It feels like as soon as I became pregnant, my priorities changed and I must admit this is definitely for the better.”

New Study Shows That You May Be Significantly More Practical Than You Realised

Fixing an Internet connection, backing-up data and setting up smart home devices counts as ‘DIY’ now.

If you’ve ever given yourself a hard time for not being ‘handy’ or ‘practical’, you’re in for some good news. Those tasks your parents ask you to do when you visit them, such as fixing a dodgy internet connection, syncing mobile phone contacts, backing-up data and even finding the best price for online purchases? They’re apparently seen as being just as handy as putting up a shelf or fixing a leak.

Research by Aspect, a London based property maintenance company, found that perceptions of the skills we most commonly associated with young adults, such as installing internet-connected devices, setting up home Internet networks and handling household data, are actually on a par with traditional DIY skills such as fixing a leak or putting up shelves.

In fact, so-called ‘digital DIY’ skills like the ability to restore a lost Internet connection and programme a smart TV are perceived as more useful than the ability the hang wallpaper and equal to the ability to install a washing machine. Finding online bargains, syncing smartphone contacts and backing-up data to the cloud are perceived as more useful than wall-mounting a TV. It seems the idea of ‘handiness’ isn’t just restricted to tasks that involve a power drill.

And this isn’t just young adults patting themselves on the back for their ‘digital DIY’ skills either. Over-55s who took part in the study were the most likely to have a positive view of these non-traditional DIY skills. This means that all those times your parents hit you up for some free tech support haven’t gone unappreciated.

Nick Bizley, director of operations at Aspect, believes the challenges of the housing market and advances in consumer technology have led to a broadening of the scope of what it means to be ‘handy around the house.’

“These findings show that although people still really value traditional DIY talents, the concept of ‘handiness’ is evolving to include skills that didn’t even exist ten years ago. For example, changing a lightbulb was something most people could do quite easily, but the advent of the ‘smart home’ has introduced new complexities to what used to be a simple task. “Handiness is in the eye of the beholder and it’s unfair to criticise people for lacking traditional DIY abilities because the chances are, they’ve got equally useful and impressive skills that are set to become more necessary as homes evolve.”

“Young people have been getting flack for not being as handy as their parents, but when you consider the proportion of 18-34 years old in rented homes compared to their parents’ generations, and that renters are often prohibited from doing their own maintenance due to their tenancy agreements, it’s no surprise they’re typically less experienced with traditional DIY skills. But young people are the ones most of us turn to when the Internet goes down or when we need help setting up the latest smart device. Everyone is handy with something and the study shows that we’re learning to value new expressions of handiness more and more.”

It’s Netflix night. (OK, every night is Netflix night, but this is Netflix movie night) so it’s time to chill-out, chow-down and choose the perfect flick.

If you have managed to do all three of those things without an argument, an interruption or a complete emotional breakdown, then teach us your ways because the rest of us experience something a little more like this.

1. Saying sayonara to your diet, you ring the local takeaway and order every greasy thing on the menu.

We'll start again on Monday

2. Pulling off your skinny jeans (with a little help, if necessary) you scramble through your laundry for your biggest, baggiest sweats.

Bliss.

3. Diving onto the couch, you sprawl across your friend’s lap and pull your hood over your head.

Time to vegetate, people.

4. Clicking on Netflix, you begin casually browsing while chit-chatting about the impending food delivery.

Movie nights are so relaxing, right?

5. Pausing and reading the description of every second film is beginning to stress you out a little because it seems like present company has seen every single thing on the menu.

Em, why are you here exactly?

6. Opening your brown paper delivery bag, you see they’ve forgotten your prawn crackers…again.

I swear, they hate me.

7. OK, back to the matter at hand; the movie!

Uh, why can’t we just watch Bridesmaids again?

8. No, we are not watching something with subtitles.

Go home, jackass.

9. How have we finished our food and we still haven’t pressed play on a movie?

It’s like they’ve written, directed and starred in every film and can’t bear to see themselves again.

10. For God's sake, what is wrong with watching a horror?

Sometimes I wonder why we’re friends.

11. I wonder if eyeballing wine is really as dangerous and disgusting as it sounds.

My film-hating friend hates me more than my prawn cracker-hating delivery man.

12. It’s now been ninety minutes and we’re still on the menu page.

Honestly, is this normal?

13. Oooh! OOOH! Something they haven’t seen, starred in or directed!

Ladies, we have a winner.

14. I suppose it is late, alright.

OK, grand, we’ll watch it next time so.

15. Screw this.

I’m going to bed.

Can't wait for next week's Netflix fest!

Being body confident isn’t something that comes easy for most of us. Many of us have something we dislike about ourselves whether it’s our frizzy hair or the extra bit of weight we carry on our tummy.

The last thing you need is someone pointing out these insecurities. One woman was beyond upset when she discovered that her partner’s friends had been mocking her over her weight in a private group chat.

She explained to Mumsnet that her partner had asked her to check his phone to see if his mum had texted, but when she clicked into the home screen, notifications popped up from his friends.

They fat-shamed the woman and even called her a whale. She wrote: “His group chat popped up-saying I must crush DP when we have sex, and that they can't believe he'd go out with me- must be ashamed etc.”

The woman, who is a size 14/16, said she has struggled with weight most of her life. She confronted her boyfriend about the messages but he said his friends were just messing and he then warned his friends to stop.

She continued: “I did send them a message when it happened saying how hurtful it was, and that I've only ever been nice to them. They replied with a half-arsed ‘sorry, it was only a joke.'”

The comments have stopped the woman from socialising with her partner’s friends, “He said that they're sorry, and that it's just 'lad banter' which in my eyes makes it even viler, and that I can't be upset as I was never meant to see it.”

Despite her partner’s efforts, he said he cannot control what his friends say. The issue is now causing major tension between the woman and her partner.

The woman explained that they have a wonderful relationship, but she is now thinking about ending things because her partner was really weak regarding sticking up for her.

Friends remains one of the most iconic and easy-to-watch TV shows of all time, despite almost 25 years passing since it first aired.

The sitcom we know and love offers us relatable comedy with lovable characters, what's not to adore? It could have been a very different series, however, without one of the cast in particular.

Author Saul Austerlitz has spilled some of Central Perk's most shocking secrets to celebrate a quarter-century of the programme, including which Friend was almost cut out of the show.

According to Austerlitz's new book, Generation Friends, the one and only Jennifer Aniston herself was nearly written out of the show after a potential filming conflict emerged.

Austerlitz told Entertainment Weekly that Jennifer had already filmed numerous episodes for an upcoming comedy, Muddling Through, which was set to air on rival network CBS.

The scheduling team at NBC allegedly aired a ratings-winning stream of TV films adapted from Danielle Steel novels at the same time as Aniston's other show to avoid ditching Rachel.

Operation Transformation is taking a 20/20 vision to health in the New Year.

Presenter Kathryn Thomas is back to spearhead the latest campaign to get the nation moving. Once again, they are encouraging the Irish public to get up, get active and get healthy. Over the course of the 8-week show, they’ll be giving the nation the tools they need to get moving, lose weight and feel great.

Kathryn Thomas is thrilled to be back. She says, “I can’t wait for the next season of OT! The leaders are what make the show every year. For me, an OT leader is somebody who is really ready and committed to changing their lives. Someone who is sick of feeling stuck and knows that 2020 is the year to change everything! To take back control and to help countless people as they help themselves.”

From September 27, the public gets yet another chance to become a part of the big Operation Transformation journey, as a nationwide search gets underway to find the next five brave new leaders to inspire the country to health and wellness in 2020.

For the first time in its history, OT will be based in the heartland of Ireland – Co. Offaly. They’ll be looking to sort out the mid-rift of the midlands in January and February and inspire the whole country to get fit, get active and get healthy.

Dr Aileen McGloin, Director of Marketing & Communications with Operation Transformation sponsors safefood said: “2020 marks ten years of our sponsorship of Operation Transformation and we’re delighted with the role it plays in helping communities to get healthier together. Our most recent research shows that 1 in 3 people who watched OT reported making a positive lifestyle change as a result of the show. We’re looking forward to inspiring more people to become part of the OT movement and make a start on their own weight-loss journey next year.”

Last year saw the biggest turn-out yet for the hugely popular GAA lights up campaign – helping communities across the 32 counties come together and enjoy getting fit and healthy in the safe surroundings of their local GAA club. The annual nationwide walks campaign also saw people turn out in record numbers all across the country.

This morning, presenter Kathryn Thomas joined former leaders Cathal Gallagher (Donegal), Pamela Swayne (Cork), Siobhan O’Brien (Dublin) and Paul Murphy (Sligo) to announce the call out for the thirteenth season of the show.

Not available was ex-leader Jean Tierney who won the hearts of the nation with her story of miscarriages and child loss. However last season, Jean had to leave the programme mid-way for the most wonderful reason imaginable. Jean discovered she was in the very early stages of pregnancy and had to withdraw from the show as a leader. Jean welcomed a beautiful baby boy a few weeks ago and they're both doing well.

All four of last year’s leaders forged ahead with their health and weight-loss journeys after the cameras left their homes and communities, and together they have ditched a whopping 13st 13lbs (87kg) since starting the Operation Transformation food and fitness plan in January 2019.

Their success has been amazing and an inspiration to anyone wanting to make that change.

So, if you think the time is right for you to turn your life around. If you want this to be YOUR year to get fit and healthy, then now is the time to apply.
