Yearly Archives: 2019

Upcycling in every sense of the word is on the rise, what with climate breakdown becoming an apocalyptic-level problem and sustainability on everyone's minds.

New One4all research shows that Irish adults are finding creative ways to make homes their own, with 48 percent of Irish people having upcycled an item from their house.

65 percent of homeowners nationwide have renovated their home, with the kitchen being the most popular part of the property to remodel. Weirdly, April is the most coveted time for home improvements.

According to the survey carried out by One4all, safety of the property is the most important factor home-dwellers in Ireland, followed by the neighbourhood in which the property is located, and thirdly, having an outdoor area or garden space.

Seeing as the housing crisis has us all feeling especially glum, most of us are comfortable with sticking where we are currently. Nine in ten of those queried claimed they 'feel at home' where they live.

Is this because they can't accord to buy another home or rent in another spot, though? Either way, Irish people are making homes their own.

While the kitchen is the most common room to be remodelled, the bathroom came in second place and the garden came in third.

December is the quietest month of the year for home updates, most likely because of all those parties being thrown during the festive season.

The renovations lasted between one and three months for 28 percent of people, but it took between six months to a year to complete the works for ten percent of people.

44 percent of those polled say they are ‘somewhat happy’ with their home at the moment, compared with 39 percent who say that they are ‘very happy’.

Overall, men in Ireland rate their current happiness with their home higher than women do, with 86 percent of them chuffed compared to 81 percent of women.

The research states that most women would change the interior of their home if money wasn't anything to worry about, but men would choose to increase the size of their house instead.

When it comes to D.I.Y, Ireland is a nifty nation with almost 1 in 2 (48 percent) revealing that they have upcycled an old item in their home.

For most of those polled, the purpose behind their upcycling project was to make something old look nicer and new. A One4all gift card to get a mate who's gaff needs a boost would be an unreal idea.

Making something more personal was the second most popular purpose for upcycling amongst respondents, with 95 percent of those who upcycled an item saying they enjoyed the project.

"One night I went into the larder where the drinks get prepared and there's like a water dispenser there. I went in before everyone else and I downed everyone's wine and I filled it up with water.

"And I got in really big trouble. The whole island got punished the following night because I got really drunk. I shouldn't have probably said that. I'll get in big trouble now!"

We can relate to the struggle of craving some vino, especially if we were on a stressful reality show fighting off other gals to find love.

The Longford native has also divulged on other behind-the-scenes secrets from the reality show, admitting that some scenes were reshot.

"Yeah, we did re-shoot," Maura said. "Just say, for instance, if a text came through and you weren't loud enough or if you stumbled on your words, you'd have to re-take obviously."

Kim Kardashian has spoken about her bladder trouble at awards ceremonies during a visit to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

The Keeping up with the Kardashians star revealed that she sometimes gets urine "all over" herself at glamorous awards shows, and it's slightly relatable. (Maybe at Electric Picnic instead…)

The beauty mogul has been trying to decide whether or not to add a ‘pee hole’ in the designs for her SKIMS shapewear line, seeing as she knows the trouble which restrictive garments bring.

Talking to host Jimmy Fallon, she admitted:

"I just launched SKIMS and I’ve been debating if I need a pee hole in certain things. Under a dress to the Emmys or whatever, I would try to use the pee hole and then you pee all over yourself and it doesn’t work half the time anyway. This is such a legit question!"

The 38-year-old was playing a game where the contestant is forced to divulge random snippets from their phones. You can imagine the weirdness that results from this game.

She also had to show viewers the most recent text she'd received from her husband Kanye, who sent a photo of a ranch alongside an adorable message.

The ban on blood donations from people who lived in the UK between 1980 and 1996 is set to be lifted. The ban was put in place during an epidemic of Mad Cow Disease.

An estimated 10,000 people were banned from donating blood during the time.

It is understood that the ban, which was introduced in 2004, will be lifted on October 7.

The removal of this ban means there will be an influx of eligible donors. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service believe their donations could increase by 10 percent after the ban is removed.

By donating blood you can help people live happier and healthier lives. Thousands of people need blood in Ireland’s hospitals, especially those who are undergoing surgery, recovering from cancer or have been in a serious accident.

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes have snapped back at haters making fun of the way they kiss, deciding to lock lips in an Instagram video that gets…sloppy.

Shawn explains:

"So we saw on Twitter and stuff, you guys saying about the way we were kissing and how it looks weird. Like we kiss like fish,” Mendes tells the camera in a clip posted to Instagram.

Camila adds that it ‘really hurt our feelings’. Shawn added; "We just want to show you how we really kiss." The couple then go in for the kill, and we died a slow death from that point onwards.

They basically mash their faces together, with Shawn even putting his hand on the back of the singer's neck at one point, but the laughter gets the better of them and they pull apart.

If they wanted to break the internet they’ve succeeded, as the clip has fetched over three million views in two hours. Their sales from Señorita must be sky-high at this stage.

Celebrities (Niall Horan) had plenty to say in the comments section, but Twitter users couldn't keep their horror to themselves;

"I just saw Camilla cabello and Shawn Mendes kiss in the most horrific, tragic, and disgusting way". We reckon 'tragic' is too harsh a word to use, but we admit to being frightened by the sloppiness.

There were, of course, numerous tweets about eyeballs needing cleansing;

"Why is this on my timeline again, I don't deserve such treatment," another internet user wrote- referencing Arthur memes for good measure;

The classic confused girl GIF popped up as well, not to be missed;

We wonder how fish feel about being compared to two of the most currently successful artists in the game? Nemo is probably chuffed.

At the same time, why is there so much hate about their style of kissing? They're two happy youngsters in the prime of their lives falling in love, yet people are disgusted by their smooches;

Maybe we're all just jealous that Shawn Mendes is now a taken man, or that Camila Mendes is a taken woman.

#Shawmila fans have been speculating about their relationship since the release of their collaborative tune, and they have been pictured shifting the face off each other on numerous occasions.

They also put on a steamy performance at the VMAs this year, but 22-year-old Camila recently said she refuses to talk about their relationship because she wants to ‘protect’ it.

"I never want to open the door for people to feel like they are involved. I want it to be mine and his. That’s why I’m so tight-lipped about it: because I want to protect it," she said.

"In a relationship, it makes me feel uncomfortable to invite everyone in on that.'

Former Disney and X-Factor US star Ricky Garcia is suing his former manager for alleged rape, according to reports by TMZ and DailyMail.com.

The actor and singer found fame after he was chosen by Simon Cowell to form a boyband on the talent show, but the 20-year-old has accused Joby Harte of sexual assault and rape from the age of 12 onwards.

In documents filed by attorney Ben Meiselas of Geragos and Geragos, Garcia claims that Harte and his company Hot Rock Media used the ‘well-worn paedophile playbook of grooming and seduction’ to consistently get him ‘black out drunk’ only for Ricky to wake up in the morning beside him naked.

"Defendant Harte, the ringleader, employed the well-worn paedophile playbook of grooming and seduction. He targeted an economically and emotionally vulnerable pre-teen and his parents. He then groomed and seduced the child’s mother to have her lay down her defences and give him unfettered access to her son, making her an unwitting accomplice to his depravity," the documents reportedly state.

Garcia starred in Disney’s Best Friends Whenever, also alleges that Harte  groomed him into a ‘sexual plaything that could be passed around his friends in the business’, including producer Nils Larsen. The claims have been categorically denied by Larsen and ex-APA agent Tyler Grasham in the ‘malicious prosecution’,

Garcia is suing Harte, Grasham, Larsen, Hot Rock Media, Cohen/Thomas Management and its partners Sheri Andersen Thomas and Paul Cohen, as well as APA. On Harte's Wikipedia page, it states that he helped to lanch ITV show Pop Idol and worked on Strictly Come Dancing.

Ricky wrote to his Instagram to tell fans that "today was one of the most difficult days of my life";

"Sadly I know my experience is just one of many and I hope my actions today will help others who experienced abuse to know that they are not alone and that there are people in this world fighting for them.

"So please if anyone is out there right now going through something even remotely similar to what I went through, please, we all need to speak out about this – yes of course I want justice for the POS that manipulated me, but more importantly this is about saving anyone else who feels like they don’t have a voice," the actor continued.

"YOU are not alone. This can happen to anyone you know. It’s just a matter of talking about this to people and letting your close ones know that it’s not okay."

A post shared by  (@realrickygarcia) on

He concluded the post; "So if anyone knows anyone else that’s going through this s**t as well. It’s so important to speak up for them."

Ricky auditioned for The X Factor US season three when he was just 14-years-old, before being eliminated during the boot camp round.

Simon Cowell asked him to return along with Emery Kelly and Jon Klaasen to form a trio called Forever in Your Mind. They were cut before the final 16 but were later signed to Hollywood Records.

Tyler Grasham was fired from APA in October 2017 amid sexual harassment and assault allegations from Blaise Godbe Lipman, Lucas Ozarowski and Jordan Gavaris.

According to the Endometriosis Foundation of America, at least 200 million women worldwide have endometriosis. That's one in every ten people with uteruses (including me).

The disorder is classified as an estrogen-dependent chronic inflammatory disease that affects women starting at reproductive age. Because it's a female pain disorder, the cause is entirely unknown.

Tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus, causing painful lesions and numerous highly disruptive symptoms. From pelvic pain, nausea, brain fog and fatigue to lower back pain and chronic abdominal pain; it literally won't leave you alone.

Even worse, it takes the average person nine years to get diagnosed with endometriosis. Even with diagnosis, there's no cure for the condition so you're fairly stuck for options.

Many women choose birth control pills or an IUD to try and reduce the symptoms, but even with excision and ablation surgery, the disorder will keep on regenerating.

Surgical removal of the lesions and hormonal contraception can help, but you're never free from it's grip. Some women have horrific symptoms but very few lesions, making it even harder to understand.

Noemie Elhadad, a professor of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, decided to study data sets on the disease, discovering a shocking dearth of information.

Speaking to HuffPost, she said;

"It’s frustrating because there’s really not a whole lot of solutions out there. Treatments are available, but we don’t know who yet who will respond in which way to what treatments. There’s still a whole lot of experimentation required and it’s really a burden on the patient.”

Elhadad’s own frustration with endometriosis coupled as well as her research on the intersection of technology and medicine spurred her to look further into the matter.

A post shared by (@citizenendo_team) on

“There’s not tonne of documentation in medical claims about how many surgeries women experience for endometriosis and what type of surgery is done for them, for example. It felt like we were missing actual relevant data to study better the disease.”

That need for data led Elhadad to create Phendo, an app which allows sufferers to track their endometriosis symptoms, treatments and pain-management strategies.

“I want to change the mental model of the way the disease is diagnosed,” states Elhadad. Herself and other researchers asked patients directly to share their experiences to build a catalogue of symptoms.

A post shared by  (@iamwomanboss) on

Phendo has over 6,000 participants globally who engage and track their symptoms on the app, creating helpful data for scientists and medical researchers.

It's also a means to educate women so they can adequately advocate for themselves at the doctor's office, which can be an intimidating place.

“There’s a lot of evidence by now of gender biases in healthcare where women in general are not being heard when they talk about their symptoms,” said Elhadad.

The app “can show in a very nearly mathematical way, a graph of this is how your pain has been in the past few months, it feels like an accurate description and something that feels so objective about who they are and hopefully a way to get heard.”
