Alcohol Action Ireland (AAI) is calling on the Finance Minister to maintain the excise duties on alcohol in its pre-budget submission.

Ireland's consumption of drink is a shocking 80 percent above the global average, which is huge cause for concern according to the AAI.

Alcohol Action Ireland CEO Sheila Gilheany says binge-drinking is causing an array of issues, mainly among young people. Ireland's 18 to 24-year-old age group are Europe's number one binge drinkers.

The submission claims that the nation's pattern of alcohol consumption is measured at 11 litres of alcohol being consumed per capita every year.

"This persistent high level of harmful drinking equates to 41 litres of gin/vodka, 116 bottles of wine or 445 pints of beer per person aged 15+," the report states.

Sheila Gilheany spoke on the matter: "That very heavy level of drinking leads to a lot of harm both to the individuals themselves and also in a wider capacity."

"There is a lot of other harm to families and to children. One-in-six children are living in homes which we would call 'alcohol impacted' families. There is a big burden on the workplace as well."

The AAI estimate that approximately 60,000 young people under the age of 18 will start drinking every year.

"For people who start drinking early, even greater harm is done to them as individuals," said Sheila Gilheany.

AAI said that excise duties on alcohol products have only changed three times since 2002 and has failed to keep up with the rate of inflation.

It renewed its calls for the establishment of a Social Responsibility Fund to invest in primary care psychology services in order to meet the needs of those impacted by parental alcohol misuse.

Summer coming to an end can be a troubling time for all of us. Why should we have to cope with Ireland's gloomy, cold seasons once more? It doesn't seem fair.

What can be the best stress reliever during difficult and chaotic moments in our lives? Food, obviously.

Deliveroo has revealed how the return to school and end of August can affect our food preferences, and we're not one bit shocked at the rise in alcohol orders during September.

september 21 GIF

Summer 2019 is leaving us behind *pause for sobbing* and it's time to ditch the bikinis for uniforms and work clothes. According to Deliveroo, healthy orders significantly increase in September…what?

The alcohol orders rise by 14 percent as we realise that exams and essay deadlines are back in our lives once more.

The end of summer has broken our hearts, but at least we got to enjoy Love Island and let our pasty skin tones get a tad bit more…red? There were glimmers of sunshine and plenty of rain showers, but it was a good time all the same.

As the nights become shorter, we're less likely to stay out dining late or visiting Dublin's best beer gardens, but Irish adults still need some vino to take the edge of the darker September evenings.

Back-to-school season means that rather than venturing out in dark, dreary weather, it's much easier to order a Prosecco Fiabesco from DRINK! or a Coors Light from Herlihy’s instead on Deliveroo.

With the end of summer comes the end of the 'beach bod' goals. The month is associated with changes and positive progress, with healthy food orders rising by 22 percent last August.

From salads and falafels and miso salmon to super-sub sandwiches, Sprout and Co and SuperSubs see a rise in Deliveroo orders during the month of September. Look at you go, gals.

A post shared by Deliveroo Ireland (@deliveroo_ie) on

September is also seen as a 'new beginning' time of the year, but we all dread the darker nights accelerating from here until December. It's depressing as f*ck.

The darkness weirdly makes us feel more tired at an earlier time, which means that Deliveroo orders start coming in earlier in the evenings too.

Last year, the average order time in June was 8:01pm, whereas by the time September rolled around, the average order time was at 7:34pm. Mad what the sky can do to us, isn't it?

So we’re making some new changes with the addition of salads and other healthy orders, but then we need a drink as a result. It's safe to say that September has us in a state of total flux.

The 10 must-have items for a dream kitchen

You could either hate cooking or love it, but there’s no denying that a well-stocked kitchen could make a whole world of difference in your attitude towards it.

A spic and span kitchen with shelves stocked with must-have spices and condiments, a rack of utensils against the wall, from a fine-tuned oven to appliances, one doesn’t need to turn into a master chef to come back home to a dream kitchen.

To save you from rummaging through the whole of the internet, I am going to make the task easier for you.
Here’s a list of some must-have kitchen items that every amateur cook to every culinary lover should include in their kitchen.

Cookware
The obvious, the bloodline of any kitchen. But the challenge is to differentiate efficiently what you need and what is best left in the shelves of the supermarket.

1. Skillet and Saucepans
The holy grail of all kitchenware. Frying eggs in the morning, stir-frying your veggies, cooking canned food, simmering sauce, and cooking your pasta, these babies are multi-functional wonders that are must-have items for your kitchen.
If you are confused about the size, the standard to recommend would be a 12-inch lidded skillet, preferably of stainless steel and non-sticky. And for saucepans, make sure the handle is coated and it comes with a lid.
Keep in mind that you are buying this for the long run, so don’t compromise with the cost.

2. Stock Pots, Sheet tray, Casserole Dishes
Cooking stews, boiling vegetables, and making soups for a big group has never been easier than with a thick, sturdy stockpot.
Make sure to buy the multi-ply ones that are famous for keeping in heat inside the pot.
If you live alone or usually don’t have company, opt for a medium-sized saucepan instead of the stockpot.
Besides these essential pieces, I would recommend a large and durable sheet tray if you mostly like cooking in the oven, and nothing beats a set of casserole dishes with matching lids for baking.

Appliances
Now onto more costly additions for your kitchen, but these will likely reap you the most rewards and save you time. I have only two non-negotiable, must-have recommendations.

3. Blender
A good quality sustainable blender can be a very wise investment for your kitchen, so pick a reliable brand to avoid the hassle of replacing it from time to time.
Blenders are the epitome of no clutter and no complications. When buying one, don’t necessarily pick the one that’s most expensive to ensure quality.
Rather, look for one with a tapered jar and the contents move downwards towards the blades. This guarantees no spillage and no unnecessary messes on the counter-top.

4. Toaster
For bread lovers, a toaster is a must. A kitchen can feel empty and bare without a toaster, the go-to tool for a fast breakfast.
A versatile toaster with wide slots can cook both the thicker bread slices and bagels for a no-hassle breakfast.

Utensils
It might seem like a very basic ‘no-help needed’ area, but I still come bearing recommendations for the must-have essentials.

5. Knives
You might think only one big knife is enough to get you through most of the cutting and chopping, but it can only get you but so far.
The three kings of the kitchen: a chef’s knife, a serrated knife, and a paring knife. You can get away with most of your cutting with the chef’s knife; for slicing bread, a serrated knife comes in handy; and for fruits or mincing smaller items, the latter is the best.
When you are buying, you can mix and match or just get a beautiful block of knives for all purposes in the kitchen.
If you are not handy with knives for peeling the skin off vegetables, add a vegetable peeler to your collection.

6. Cutting Board
Knives and cutting boards go hand in hand, and there are varieties that you can choose from. Bamboo ones are best for cutting vegetables and plastic ones are best for proteins.

7. Measuring Spoons and Cups
Thinking of baking that perfect cake for a loved one or following a traditional recipe for the first time that has been in your family for years?
Unless you are descendants of cooking gods, there is a one in a million chance that your first try would come off as successful without precisely measuring the ingredients.
Why should you opt for both the cups and the spoons? The Pyrex measuring cups are more useful and efficient in keeping tabs on large quantities of liquids; the added value of Pyrex is that the material is microwaveable.
Stainless steel measuring spoons might not go easy on the eye or aren’t going to be the prettiest addition to your kitchenware, but the long-lasting quality is a clear winner for the long run.

8. Can Opener
This small miracle is going to make your life very, very easy. It is the connecting tool between those ingredients in the can and your saucepan!
You have two options: either an electric or a manual one. It’s hard to say which one might last longer; it completely depends on how carefully you use it. Just make sure you don’t choose one that causes hand cramps.

9. Spatula, Whisks, Spoons
No list of utensils is complete without a spatula, spoons, or whisks. They are must-have kitchen items and no-brainer. These are the hard hitters of your kitchen, so picking the most durable one will be more cost-efficient. Better yet, pick up a pack of various sizes, so they are always ready whenever you need them.

10. Colander/Strainer
A must-have item for any kitchen. From washing and draining vegetables to separating fine sediments from the broth, a colander is a well-designed, easy-to-use kitchen item that you can’t live without.
Pick classic plastic colanders, which are easy to use and easier to wash, or a set of stainless steel strainers for draining even the finest particles.

Other Items
No list for essential items in a kitchen is complete without oven mitts and potholders, towels, dish soap, and dish drying rack.
Oven mitts and potholders for obvious reasons: you don’t want to burn your fingers every time you cook. No need to run around looking for pieces of cloth to clean up the mess on the counter-top or to dry dishes when you have a kitchen towel right within your reach.
These small, convenient items could, and will should you get them, make your cooking life less messy and more enjoyable.

Some Last Words
Maybe you just moved to a new home or you feel like overhauling your kitchen with just the essentials to fit your busy life.
Maybe all you are left with are some thrift-shop glassware and some pots and pans with pitch-black bottoms, and you want a change. And unless you start cooking, you cannot fathom what you might or might not need.Be conscious of the environment, always look for environment-friendly, sustainable products, and try using plastic bags as less as possible when you make purchases. Every small act counts.
So, save this as a list when you head to the nearest shop because I promise you, you won’t need anything else beside it. Happy cooking!

Former Love Island star Chris Hughes has slammed the 'sickening abuse' experienced by girlfriend Jesy Nelson after she was called 'the ugly one' out of Little Mix.

The 26-year-old jumped to his girlfriend's defence after a cruel troll wrote a horrible comment on his latest photo with 28-year-old Jesy.

The couple are shown cuddling in bed with snacks resting on Chris' chest, and Chris captioned the post;

“So today we went to the cinema, but didn’t watch a film, we just bought chocolate and sweets instead,” adding pig emojis for good measure. Jesy wrote back; "My piglet" with a heart emoji. ADORBS.

One person wrote a cruel comment about Jesy's appearance saying: “I would rather pay cinemas prices than be led next to that sooooooo much makeup but she was always the ugly one.”

Chris has been vocal about a number of issues that are close to his heart, including animal cruelty, and made sure to stand up for his girlfriend by naming and shaming the troll;

Reacting to the message, Chris shared a screenshot of the comment to his Instagram Story and wrote: “What a c***.”

Chris added in another post: “Find it so strange that grown women enjoy insulting young girls they don’t even know…. honestly.

“Some of the people that follow me and give my girlfriend abuse is actually sickening. Your lives must be so miserable, that you can only feel for them.”

Jesy recently got candid about being branded "the fat one from Little Mix" and the impact which it had on her mental health in a moving Instagram post;

“6 months ago this girl was someone I just wanted to forget. I wanted to erase her from my mind and everyone else’s memory. I didn’t see her as Jesy I saw her as 'the fat one from Little Mix.'

“Up until now I hated her not because she’d ever done anything bad but because I was made to hate her by endless amounts of trolling. Since filming my documentary for @bbcone and @bbcthree I’ve learned so much more than I ever expected to. Thanks to all the inspirational people I’ve met on this emotional journey, I now love the girl in this photo.”

The BBC One documentary references body image and mental health. Chris and Jesy began dating in January after the singer broke up with Harry James.

The couple have sinced moved in together last month, with Chris telling The Mirror; "Oour schedules aren’t too bad. We obviously live together now, which I think everyone knows. But we fit around it."

“Being lost in a foreign country with my girlfriend makes me feel free and is when I’m at my happiest.” What a great couple, we simply have to stan.

Relying on public transport can get the better of you at times, especially when you've had a draining day in work, it's lashing rain outside and your bus has magically vanished from the Real Time.

We're approaching back-to-school season which means the traffic is going to be far worse than it was this summer. Oh how we'll treasure those blissful mornings when our bus could actually drive through Rathmines.

Google Maps has always helped you get from place to place, whether you’re driving, walking, biking or taking public transport. And we know that journeys can be complex, often involving multiple modes of transportation to help you get around town.

Today, we’re making it easy to pair public transport directions with biking options so you can travel that first or last mile with ease — like when you’re headed to work at the peak of the busy back-to-school season so you need to ride your bike to the nearest bus stop to make that important 9 a.m. meeting on time.

Here’s how it works:

  • Enter your destination in the search box, tap on “Directions” and then on the public transport tab.

  • From there, you’ll automatically see routes that feature cycling options paired with public transport directions.

  • If you’re biking, you’ll see routes tailored for cyclists along with everything you need to know about the public transport portion of your journey.

  • All of this information is automatically factored into your total travel time and ETA so you can know exactly when you’ll get to your destination.

Public Transport directions paired with biking will be available on iOS, with Android rolling out in the following weeks.
