The HSE has issued a warning to the public after an early spike in flu cases this winter. They have urged the public to stay inside and away from work or school if they’re displaying signs of the flu.

They stressed that the illness is extremely contagious and the best thing to do is to stay home until they're better.

GPs have reported an increase in flu cases last week which is a cause for concern.

Medical experts are urging people to stay out of work and to keep children away from school or creche until they’re fully recovered.

Symptoms include a sudden fever that is typically 38.3 degrees Celsius (101 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. These initial symptoms will be followed by respiratory distress like a dry cough and a runny nose.

Full recovery usually takes between five and seven days.

Typical symptoms of the flu include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion
  • Cough
  • Chills
  • Body aches
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness

Experts recommend those suffering from the flu to drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest. You can take painkillers to ease symptoms if necessary.  Antibiotics will not do much to help with the flu because the cause is viral and not bacterial.

Wash your hands for a minimum of 15 seconds and dispose of used tissues straight away to help combat the virus.

The public has also been advised to cough into the crook of your arm and to use hand sanitiser frequently.

There is still time to get the flu vaccine, so if you are in one of the at risk groups then make an appointment today. It takes up to two weeks before the vaccine becomes fully effective, so it’s advised to get the vaccine before incidence of flu reaches peak levels.

Saoirse Ronan is our red carpet queen. The Little Women actress always manages to stand out in a unique and classy way when it comes to her style.

She wowed us at the 2018 Oscars in a beautiful pastel pink Calvin Klein by Appointment dress and left us speechless when she arrived at this year’s Met Gala in that sequin Gucci gown.

The Brooklyn actress debuted one of her best looks at last night’s Paris premiere of Little Women.

The Oscar nominee opted for a bold makeup look that complimented her stunning dress. The red lip and lilac eyeshadow go perfectly together, but we can’t help but feel like we’d look like we escaped the circus if we even attempted the look.

Saoirse was joined by her Little Women co-stars Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, Louis Garrel and director Greta Gerwig at the premiere.

Saoirse recently received a Best Actress nomination for the 2020 Golden Globes and there have also been whispers of an Oscar nod for the Irish star and rightly so. The actress was made to play Jo March.

Seven Worlds, One Planet by Jonny Keeling, Scott Alexander with foreword by David Attenborough (Published by Penguin)

Long ago, our planet had only one gigantic land mass. Then something monumental happened. That supercontinent ruptured and seven different worlds were born. Each of those worlds – or continents – evolved, and continues to evolve, its own way of life. From the jungle of the Congo or the majestic Himalayas to the densely populated wilds of Europe or the comparatively isolated Australasia, Seven Worlds, One Planet explores the natural wonders that give each of our continents its distinct character.

Following the animals that have made these iconic environments their home, it discovers spectacular wildlife stories that reveal what makes each of these seven worlds unique. With a foreword by Sir David Attenborough and over 250 breath-taking images, including stills from the BBC Natural History Unit’s spectacular footage, Seven Worlds, One Planet is a stunning exploration of the planet, and the worlds within it, that we call home.

Return to Sender – Revisiting John Hinde’s Ireland by Paul Kelly (Published by Gill Books)

Revisit a jewel-bright Ireland as Return to Sender beautifully captures the then-and-now of John Hinde’s postcards. Throughout Paul Kelly’s chidhood in California, his father, Patrick Kelly, sent him John Hinde postcards when he was vistiting the land of his youth. By the time Paul was nine, he was accompanying his father on these trips and developed his own love of Ireland. In 2015 Paul’s father died and in 2018 Paul came back to live in Ireland with his family. In tribute to both his father and John Hinde, in the summer of 2018 Paul set about recapturing the modern-day versions of Hinde’s postcards, which are set against the originals in this book.

Return to Sender pairs Hinde’s iconic postcards from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s with corresponding contemporary photographs, illustrating the ways Ireland’s rural and urban landscapes have changed over the decades or, in some places, not changed at all. This side-by-side contrast wonderfully captured by Paul Kelly, elicits feelings of nostalgia for Hinde’s instantly recognisable jewel-bright Ireland.

Christmas gift shopping has put quite the dint in my bank account so the chances of heading out for midweek pints are awfully slim.

Luckily, one of the best coming-of-age movies is on TV tonight so we will all be pleasantly entertained.

The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson is on BBC Two tonight and you need to tune into the feel-good film.

Harrelson and Steinfeld make the most charming on-screen duo.

The movie follows Nadine as she struggles with high-school life. The teen has enough to deal with as she tackles unrequited love, dull classes and family heartache, but her world turns upside down when her best friend starts dating her older brother.

Nadine suddenly finds herself feeling more alone than ever before, especially after losing her dear father.

The teen forms an unexpected friendship with her teacher Erwin (Harrelson) who helps her realise life isn’t half as bad as she thinks.

This heartwarming and emotional teen movie is one of the best of our time, plus the soundtrack is an absolute dream. 80s pop, The 1975 and Birdy- what more could you ask for?

The Edge of Seventeen stars Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Haley Lu Richardson and Hayden Szeto.

You can watch it on BBC 2 at 11.15pm tonight.
