Yearly Archives: 2019

by

RTÉ star, entrepreneur and TV personality Darren Kennedy has had quite the year, after his brilliant stint on Dancing With The Stars and the growth of his men's skincare and grooming brand, Kennedy & Co.

He's a man with a full schedule, no doubt, but how does he unwind in his spare time? Audiobooks, reading, and spending time with the nation's sweetheart; Amy Huberman, of course.

Speaking at the launch of Diet Coke’s first ever Book Club at Iveagh Garden’s Hotel, Dublin on Thursday, he describes the style of the extra-special events and spoke to us about his favourite books, authors and celebrity inspirations.

The Diet Coke Book Club definitely has some upgraded features. It’s a twist on the classic book club, there’s Instagram Live events too for everyone to take part in.

“Book clubs, by their very nature, tend to be quite small groups of people. Even though we’re having events in Dublin, Belfast and Cork, and people can sign up for free and come and join us, not everyone is going to be able to make it for whatever reason. Having the digital aspect to it, the live book clubs, opens it up to a whole new audience. You don’t even have to be in Ireland to join, which is nice. It kind of marries technology with books, and for a while people were saying that technology was the death of the book but it’s actually not. I listen to so many books on Audible and apps like that, it just marries the pair.”

Darren and Amy will be using social media to include as many people as possible into their world of literary joy, but do you need to put down the phone and pick up a book to really de-stress?

“I definitely want to read more. I find sometimes that life is so busy these days, I said this year that I wanted to remove the word ‘busy’ from my dictionary. I want to be balanced, having that time to switch off your device, pick up your book or even listen to it. I put on audiobooks in the car now and find it very soothing. My goal for the rest of this year is hopefully to read a little bit more.”

What can you tell us about your three favourite summer reads for the Diet Coke Book Club?

“We have two Irish authors, which is really exciting. Each of the books were chosen by Amy Huberman, and Amy knows her books so I’m taking them as a good call. For July we have If Only by Melanie Murphy. The August book club, which is myself and Amy, is How To Fail by Elizabeth Day, based on the famous podcast. And we also have Rules of the Road by Ciara Geraghty.”

Do you have a favourite easy summer read that you bring on all your sunny holidays for light beach reading?

“That’s a difficult question because once I’ve read a book I very rarely go back to it, but there are a few exceptions. Anything by Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, is incredible. I’ve read all of his books. I vary between And the Mountain Echoes or A Thousand Splendid Suns as my favourite. I read them over and over again. They’re such beautiful stories of humanity, you get a cultural insight and you feel like you’re being transported to this world and are learning something about the time, the place, the culture. That’s important to me for a book.”

If you were to write your own book, what would it be about?

“It’s a book that I’ve had in the ether for a while now. For me, it would be about how to just live your authentic life and make the most of your life. It’s your life, it’s no one else’s and you’ve only got one shot at it. How do you go about doing that? It’s not rocket science. I think that would be the topic. Or maybe I’ll do a kids book based on my dog, Harry’s Adventures, or The Hair-Tale Adventures of Harry the Yorkshire.”

What character from a famous novel do you relate to the most?

“I really struggled with this one. I used to love comics as a kid and used to think I was in X-Men. As a child I could definitely relate to them, but now I can’t answer that. If I’m based on being my true self, I might relate to my authentic self more now.”

Is there a book that sums up summer for you?

Summer to me is all about change, it’s all about difference and relaxing. So when I think of books that I read during the summer, generally I’m on a beach or wishing I’m on a beach and that changes every year. It has to be something simple, quick and easy. Actually, I read a book called The Cat on my last holiday. It’s really short, only about 80 pages by a Japanese author. It was so simple and easy but such a joy to read. Light and frivolous, nothing too heavy.”

Do you have a favourite author, or someone who inspires you? (Matt Haig is our new favourite.)

“I’ve listened to Humans by Matt Haig, loved it. My favourite author is Khaled Hosseini, hands down. I’m dying for him to release a new book. He did release a very short one, which I bought in the airport but I felt I was robbed but the money went to charity. A person I look up to is Oprah, she’s amazing. What she’s doing with ‘Super Soul Sundays’ and the book which she’s released, which is a compilation of some really insightful quotes, is really nice to dip in and out of. I also have a book of quotes by Buddha, a bedside book, which is quite nice. I pick it up twice a week and randomly pick a page and see what Buddha says.”

Have you read Amy Huberman’s books? We won’t tell her if you haven’t read them!

Heartbreak Hotel is absolutely hilarious. No, I haven’t read her books, sorry Amy. That woman is sharp as they come and super witty and funny so it’s on the list.”

What do books mean to you, have they ever gotten you through a trying time?

“Yes, books have absolutely gotten me through a trying time. Books for me are a form of escapism but also a great way to put perspective on our own reality. Sometimes we can get so stuck in our own heads and our own situations, and books are something that allow the cogs to stop moving and project into something else can be really vital. A book that I read that I loved and definitely recommend reading is called Broken Open by Elizabeth Lesser. Phenomenal book, but kind of intense. I just thought of another book that I loved as well was Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I read that on a beach in Tarifa and just: Wow."

What famous people would you invite to your book club?

“That’s easy for me. I’d keep it a small, select group. First of all; Oprah Winfrey. I just think that woman is incredible. David Attenborough, because what a living legend. Tom Ford, because I think he’d put another slant on it. Even if he’d nothing to add in terms of the book, he’d just look amazing. Maybe just to keep it relevant and contemporary, maybe we’d let Leo Varadkar come to the party, just to see what he’d say.”

We've only recently realised just how wasteful the make-up and cosmetic industry is, seeing as pretty much every product is made using single-use plastic packaging.

We will forever worship our Urban Decay Naked palettes, and that love can't just go away, but it's time we search for more sustainable options while still looking slammin' every day.

Eyeshadow application isn't as easy as all the YouTubers and beauty bloggers have us believe. Not all of us are seasoned #MUAs, or had beauty tutorials to pore over when we were growing up.

We've all butchered a smoky eye in our time, gotten irritable product in our eyes or chose the worst possible colour to spread across our lids; but what if a product was fully recyclable and easy to apply?

The world's first stick-on eyeshadow has FINALLY been created, and is bringing practical and beautiful products to our lives. Talk about sustainably slaying the game, wow.

Beauty buffs are absolutely raving about the new eco-friendly treat, which is the first ever fully-recyclable eyeshadow. Yes, that includes packaging, applicators AND the pigments themselves.

Majic Beauty's 'eyeMajic' Instant Eyeshadow is the first transferable eyeshadow which uses a heat-sensitive applicator to apply makeup to the eyelid in one easy swipe.

The product is totally hygienic, non-toxic and is 100 percent free of bacteria as well as paraben-free, cruelty-free and devoid of irritating fillers or preservatives. It's eco-certified too, we may actually faint.

The genius 'eyeMajic' is available in a whole spectrum of colour combinations online, from earthy browns and golds to metallics, shimmery pastels and matte or smoky shades.

The eyeshadow is made with extremely fine-grade pigment particles to formulate a rich, long-lasting colour and the applicators are all biodegradable.

The reviews on Amazon are nothing short of glowing, so the product definitely delivers what it hopes to. Imagine…you can have Eye-con beauty status while being kind to our environment?

'eyeMajic' buyers describe the product as easy to use with fantastic results, with make-up artists themselves recommending them for both pros and beginners.

It won't cost a bomb as well to slay the game while hugging the planet; at €6.69 a pack, 'eyeMajic' is a bargain. Don't miss out on the latest cult beauty product, it's set to go viral.

Forget your morning cup of coffee.

Put the phone down and cut the pointless scrolling.

Wanna have a productive day?

Then a quickie is the only way…according to a new study, that is.

The study surveyed nearly 1,000 people living with their other half about all things AM passion.

And the results were quite startling, tbh.

Ok so when it comes to getting down and dirty when you wake up, 63% of women said nope, it's not their cup of tea and they had NEVER done it.

Lads, are you serious?!

One in five did admit though that they would like to make it a regular part of their routine – and we agree!

They also discovered that more than 45% of women and 53% of men say morning sex makes them more productive.

Having sex = your boss not shouting at you because you are actually doing good work.

Sounds like a win-win to us.

It also looked like women were willing to give up their beauty sleep to get frisky – a whole 30 minutes!

For men, it was unsurprisingly 45 minutes of kip that they would sacrifice for a morning romp.

And overall, it isn't surprising that those surveyed who had morning sex at least once a week, were more satisfied in their relationships…so what are you waiting for?

Happy humping!

“The world is disturbingly comfortable with the fact that women sometimes leave a sexual encounter in tears.” Lili Loofbourow

According to a recent study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, about 30 percent of women report feeling pain during vaginal intercourse.

This alarming statistic is only recorded amongst women who are even comfortable speaking to doctors about sex, meaning that a far greater number could be more accurate.

Another hugely concerning fact which the study expressed is that "large proportions" of women don't tell their partners when sex hurts, they simply grin and bear it.

This testifies to the notion that women often sacrifice their pleasure, not to mention their comfort, for male satisfaction. The assumption that “bad sex” simply means the absence of pleasure is a naïve one- for many women, “bad sex” can mean extreme discomfort and even agony.

Debby Herbenick, an academic from the Indiana University School of Public Health and one of those who incentivised the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behaviour, confirmed this suggestion.

"When it comes to 'good sex,'" she commented, "women often mean without pain, men often mean they had orgasms."

The satisfaction scale for men and women is clearly imbalanced. Painful sex isn’t the rare outlier that it’s proclaimed to be, in fact, it’s far more widespread than imagined.

For some women, such as those suffering from illnesses such as endometriosis, ectopic pregnancies and vaginismus, it’s part of their reality.

For others, they are in need of more foreplay, lubrication or comfort. Anxiety and tension can have a drastic impact on female sexual pleasure.

There are dozens of possible reasons why you could be experiencing pain during sex, ranging from the physical to the psychological.

The troubling thing is that so many of these reasons are not well-known, and they are scarcely researched or prioritised in our healthcare systems.

Dyspareunia is the medical term for painful sex, and can be a deeply distressing condition which takes a massive emotional toll on those who experience it.

According to another scientific article on women’s pain:

“Approximately 15% of women have chronic dyspareunia that is poorly understood, infrequently cured, often highly problematic, and distressing.”

The stigma surrounding problems such as the ones mentioned above is part of the reason why women aren’t discussing their sexual pain, especially not with healthcare practitioners.

Even if a woman feels willing and able to discuss her sex life with her doctor, the lack of research into female pain in general as well as in sexual medicine means that even more barriers crop up.

Sexual assault arguably can also contribute towards experiencing pain during future sexual encounters.

Numerous studies support the idea that a mental block is created surrounding sex, which lives with survivors long after their attack.

Without a healthy view of sex and positive sexual experiences, women are not being given the tools to vocalise their pain.

Other disorders such as vulvodynia, vestibulodynia, interstitial cystitis, vaginitis, vaginal atrophy, fibroids, lichen sclerosus and lichen planus (skin disorders), ovarian cysts and endometriosis have all been grossly under-reported, and awareness of these conditions is extremely limited.

Yeast infections, overly tight pelvic floor muscles, bowel problems and hormonal imbalances can also be major contributors to pain during sex, as well as STI’s.

BBC Three has recently aired a visceral visual essay series, where director Sindha Agha decided to artistically depicted the female experience of painful sex.

The beautiful video uses colourful imagery and imaginative props such as glass, metal nails, sprinkles, knives and fruit to parallel with the emotional narration:

Endometriosis sufferer Rhoda Hierons reads her own words aloud with a gorgeous and vivid backdrop, describing the pain of sex as “glass shattering inside you and embedding itself”.

Sindha Agha emotively explains the meaning behind her video: “I’m trying to create an external language for women’s innermost experiences,” she claims.

“As women, I feel we’ve been led to believe that many of our experiences are indescribable, incommunicable; that even when we can figure out how to talk about what happens inside our bodies and our minds, that we’d better not — that others don’t want to hear it because it’s too gross, too sad, too strange. Above all, that we won’t be understood."

System injustices in healthcare need to change if women ever want to truly understand and gain respect for their own bodies.

Women have never been given the tools to communicate their pain, especially not during sex. Language is not in a woman’s favour, even the medical understanding of the female anatomy is not where it should be.

Without the words, women cannot use language to communicate.

Without language, there is no voice that can even attempt to ask for the help that they desperately need.

A heartbreaking voice recording of missing Irish teenager Nóra Quoirin's mum was used by police in the Malaysian jungle yesterday, as day five of the search took place.

The recording was played on loudspeakers near the Dusun resort in Negeri Sembilan where Nóra went missing. Her Belfast-born mum, Meabh, said;

“Nóra darling, I love you. Mum is here.” The Irish Times reports that voices of other relatives have been recorded for use in the case as well.

Search-and-rescue teams, Indigenous trackers and members of special forces remain hopeful in their efforts to find the missing 15-year-old, who has learning and developmental disabilities.

The family have spoken out after police leading the investigation wouldn't rule out a "criminal element" in the search for Nóra.

The 15-year-old came to the resort on Saturday for a two-week holiday with her mum, her French father Sebastien and her younger siblings. The resort is roughly 63km from Kuala Lampur.

The family are based in London, but the teen apparently has an Irish passport. Her dad raised the alarm on Sunday at 8am after Nóra was not found in her room, and the family believe she was abducted.

Meabh and Sebastien insist that their daughter would never have wandered off on her own in the middle of the night.

The police force analysed fingerprints found in a resort cottage from which Nóra was reported missing, with deputy police chief Che Zakaria Othman saying investigations were ongoing to identify the prints which were at an open living room window, rather than the bedroom where she was sleeping.

Police stated they were “not ruling out any possibility” and that they believed Nóra was still in the local area. While initial reports commented that Nóra’s bedroom window was opened, the police have denied this.

Divers have been searching the river which runs through the forest, and helicopters have been deployed. Indigenous Orang Asli people are also aiding the search, and trackers from the Senoi Praaq special unit.

Her family said in a statement: “We must remain hopeful. Nóra is still missing, and she is very vulnerable, and we need to do everything we can to bring her home.”

Her relatives have expressed thanks to the Royal Malaysian Police, the search-and-rescue teams, and the emergency services “for all they have done for us in this difficult time”.

They are “completely overwhelmed” by the support they have received worldwide and are appreciative of the assistance of French, British and Irish police.

There is no evidence of foul play, but police are ruling nothing out. Sniffer dogs haven't picked up a trace of the missing teen, and about 250 search-and-rescue personnel have taken part in the search.

The Star newspaper in Malaysia assessed that the total number of people reported missing in the Malaysian jungle this year has been noticeably higher than the past three years.

Fire-and-rescue department operations director Abdul Wahab Mat Yasin said that since January, there were 252 cases of people reported lost.

In the past, the Malaysian authorities have been criticised for inaction on numerous cases, such as that of Malaysian-born Australian citizen Annapuranee Jenkins in 2017. She has never been found.

The winner of Love Island 2018 has opened up about his split from Dani Dyer, blaming their break-up on the intensity of moving the relationship along too fast.

The reality star is currently searching for The One on Celebs Go Dating, and got candid about what went wrong with his previous girlfriend.

Jack admitted that he did initially want to move in with Dani straight away, but said: "I wish we'd have waited. I let her rush it a little bit.

He made sure to mention that he's "100%" over Dani and is definitely ready to start dating again. "I want to find someone now," he said.

Dating experts set Jack up on a date with Chiara in last night's episode, but it got fairly awkward, to say the least. Jack interrupted Chiara constantly, asking her a barrage of questions.

There was a mix-up when he believed she wanted to leave with the waiter, and then actually tried to set her up with one of them. *Sigh*.

The date didn't end well, with Jack labelling it 'a disaster': "That's the most surreal date I've been on. That was really weird," he said.

"You know, that's the first dating disaster I've had – I'm going to call it a disaster. That's the first date I've been on that I've thought, 'f**k that'."

Their luxury rented mansion has a pool, endless gardens and tennis courts and boasts famous neighbours like supermodel Claudia Schiffer and Matthew Vaughn.

A source close to the singer told The Sun: “Jessie and Channing’s relationship has been going from strength to strength.

“They still spend a lot of time in America, but when they’re in the UK they find London quite intense so enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside," the source said.

“The property they’ve been using suits them down to the ground as it’s not too far from London, but it’s really relaxing and away from all the noise so they can spend quality time together.”

Reports say Channing will now split his time between the UK and Los Angeles in order to see his daughter, Everly. He shares the six-year-old with his ex-wife, Jenna Dewan.

Tatum revealed this week that he's removing himself from social media, writing to his 17.4 million followers; “I’m gonna take a break and come off socials for a minute. I’ve been trying to get inspired and create again.

“And to be honest I don’t really feel, or at least I haven’t felt very creative on social in the last couple years now. I’m gonna go and be just in the real world for a while and off my phone. I’ll probably come back at some point.”

Beyonce's devoted Bey Hive are absolutely CONVINCED that The Lion King star is pregnant with her fourth baby, saying that she's been 'dropping hints' all over Instagram.

The rumour mill was churning after the 37-year-old singer and actress posted a group of images to her followers, following a purple theme.

Queen Bey is currently on her holibops with Blue Ivy, twins Rumi and Sir and her rapper husband, Jay-Z.

The latest group of Instagram pictures has sent fans into a frenzy as the Destiny's Child star was posing with her arms crossed and a purple crocodile skin bag covering her stomach.

Eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out that the post could be to hide a baby bump. One commented: “Anyone else see a bump or is it only me?”.

Another fan said: “Let me research the meanings of purple and the things it’s related to. This is a clue!”. The Bey Hive love a good puzzle, clearly.

Some fans quickly rubbished the claims, saying the mum-of-three's body could simply have changed;

"This woman had three whole babies, three y’all, and she is 37-years-old …You really think the only possible way she could have a belly pouch is by being pregnant?!". Fair point.

Beyonce was recently spotted wearing a bracelet she debuted while pregnant with her first child.

The Crazy in Love singer rocked the same Lorraine Schwartz cuff she wore on the night she revealed she was expecting daughter Blue Ivy in 2011, which has increased baby mania speculation.

In other Bey Hive news, reports have been swirling that Destiny's Child are reuniting to record new music and head on a 2020 tour.

If Beyonce is pregnant, this could throw those plans into disarray. Do we want a Carter Baby #4 or Destiny's Child on tour? It's like Sophie's Choice…
