Yearly Archives: 2019

It's finally time for Love Island, the nation's latest addiction, to come to an end tonight.

Four couples are in the running to be announced as this year's winner; Tommy Fury and Molly Mae Hague, Greg O'Shea and Amber Gill, Curtis Pritchard and Maura Higgins and India Reynolds and Ovie Soko.

Tommy and Molly Mae are the favourites, seeing as they're the only official item in the villa and the producers seem to have chosen them for the crown long ago, but fans are calling for Greg and Amber to win the £50,000 cash prize instead.

Viewers are convinced that Molly is playing a game and 'sabotaging' other couples, as well as possibly faking her feelings for Tommy.

Several audience members are creating a plan to ensure the vote goes the way of charming Irishman Greg and the only remaining original cast member; Amber.

Instead of dividing the vote by choosing Ovie Soko, one of the favourite and most hilarious contestants, Twitter users are telling fans to vote tactically by only choosing Greg and Amber.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer said:

"I will say this again. Do not divide the vote. Amber and Greg have more chance of winning. People only really like Ovie, but Amber and Greg as individuals are well liked. Vote for them, don't split the vote and let Tommy and Molly win."

Another added: "Right I know we love Ovie loads but we can't let the Ovie & India votes and the Greg & Amber votes split so that Tommy and Molly end up winning so we need to sacrifice our love of Ovie for the greater good."

Another #Gramber fan said: "While one part of me wants Ovie and India in the final because it’s Ovie the other part of me is worried because he and Amber have a mostly common fan base which will divide votes in the finals leading to Molly Mae and Tommy wining."

Anton and Belle were sadly dumped from the villa last night, and viewers were emotional as he whispered to Amber to "go and f*cking win it" as the last OG in the villa.

Amber's been on a whirlwind journey in the villa, after demon Michael cruelly dumped her for Joanna Chimonides and then tried to get her back, in vain.

Greg has been nothing but lovely to her, just as she deserves, and the pair have won the hearts of the nation. We love a gal who knows her damn WORTH:

"Anton would have wanted Amber and Greg to win, lets not let his sacrifice be made in vain. Even if you think Ovie is attractive, vote Amber and Greg we can't let Molly win."

Scottish Twitter had better come thru for Gramber, but with Twitter looking this one sided towards the pair, how can they not snatch the prize?

Rumours of the show being fixed to suit Tommy and Molly Mae have been rife, so we'll have to wait and see what happens tonight.

The constant sharing of intimate images of women without consent shines a light on how women are seen in our society: things to be looked at, owned and consumed. Objects.

In the #MeToo era, naive groups of people often declare that the treatment of women as purely sexual objects for men to consume is long gone. Other groups say this treatment has never even existed, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Some even say women deserve their personal images shared without consent; if they took the picture in the first place, they were asking for it.

Following numerous incredibly painful rape cases in this country, healthcare scandals which throw female lives away and the Repeal movement, women have had to face emotional trauma in the Emerald Isle. Rape culture is alive and well in our society, yet most have been desensitised to it.

Every few days, a reminder rears its ugly head to show us what we can’t forget, to nudge us into submission and point out the fact that women today still have to protect ourselves at all times and we can’t forget it.

Today’s reminder comes from a Reddit page by the charming name of ‘Irish Sluts’. TheJournal.ie reported that a page was sharing intimate images of young women without their consent online, with sexually explicit commentary by the website’s users. No doubt derogatory language was chosen about the women’s body and appearance.

“The content includes portraits of families, social media posts, and images of women walking in public or in the gym, but there are also nude photographs taken in more intimate settings. Details of where the women live and where they attend college or school are also posted on the site,” it was reported, with the Garda Síochana confirming. Members of the group also made sure to request ‘nudes’ from counties all over the country, mentioning specific women by name.

One woman said that she was alerted about her image being used in the group when a male friend saw it in a WhatsApp chat and alerted her, she told TheJournal.ie. “I got a call from a friend of mine who said that my photo was being sent around lots of WhatsApp groups,” she said.

Speaking anonymously, the woman said she felt violated and “nearly got sick” when she discovered the Reddit page. The Gardaí can’t carry out much action unless you’re underage, and the advice is to actually contact the group itself to solve the matter. So essentially there is zero authority who can regain control over the private images of you and return them to the owner, making the internet an even more dangerous place.

This isn’t the first incident, of course, and it won’t be the last. ‘Revenge porn’ is alive and well; the habit of using sexually explicit images of an ex partner in order to use against them with malicious intent, such as posting them online or sending them to an employer.

A friend of another victim of this site told TheJournal.ie: “I’m not under any illusions that these types of things go on in parts of the internet, but this is very Ireland orientated and I can’t get my head around the fact that it happens so blatantly on a mainstream site like reddit that has businesses advertising on it, etc. People are posting personal details on some pictures, names, addresses, etc. It’s not sitting right with me that these girls can be put in this type of physical/mental danger without them knowing especially given some of the other things in the news cycle in the last few days.”

Brendan Howlin, Labour leader, has said that Ireland is extremely far behind when it comes to dealing with the issue of revenge porn. The Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Bill aims for a six-month prison sentence upon conviction, but is still before the Oireachtas. While time is ticking, the internet is abusing images of women all over Ireland.

Literally the only law protecting against the distribution of images such as these without permission is contained in the Non Fatal Offences Against The Person Act. There is a subsection of this act which deals with harassment but no specific laws in place to guard against revenge porn or unconsensual sharing of personal or explicit images.

What does this say about how the men of Ireland see us?

Most of us will be able to distinctly recall the infamous Belfast rape trial involving four Ulster Rugby players; Stuart Olding, Paddy Jackson, Rory Harrison and Blane McIlroy. Whether you were team I Believe Her or not, the language used in the WhatsApp group featuring the four men about the alleged victim and Irish women in general was beyond disturbing.

Toxic masculinity, entitlement and objectification reeks from texts such as these, but why does society continue to believe that wealthy, white, heterosexual young men with privilege are incapable of rape and sexual assault? They discuss women as sex objects for their fetishization, and why wouldn’t they go any further than that? Humiliation is the first step to dehumanise a person. Once someone is dehumanised enough, it becomes easier and easier to mistreat them.

The #UCD200 became a huge scandal that spawned an investigation after claims of a Facebook group involving 200 UCD students who were sharing nonconsensual sexually explicit images of women without their knowledge were made public. The investigation found no evidence, but one of the most noteworthy aspects of the incident was how easily believable it was. This happens to women every single day, I have lost count of friends who have had private and intimate images of themselves shared without their consent; myself included.

The language used by Irish men is mirrored in the sexual assault trials and courtrooms; the recent Cork case involving a young woman who accused a man of raping her in an alley had her underwear used as evidence against her. A female barrister held up a lacy thong, and claimed that only a woman who WANTED to have sex would wear something like that.

Women are often the ones tearing down fellow women with language; toxic femininity is alive and well. We have been taught to compete with each other to win the attention, the approval of men.

The language used to describe women, to portray them as either seductive prostitutes or prudes, ‘sluts’ or nuns, feeds the narrative that what you wear, how much you drink, and your sexual past plays a part in your victimhood. You can’t be a victim if you were asking for it, according to the courts of this nation.

Acquittal doesn’t mean innocence, as anyone who has experienced the Irish sexual violence criminal justice system understands more than they should have to. Why wouldn’t Irish men speak of women in such terms, when they won’t ever have to experience any consequences? Why wouldn’t they join in the lad banter, the ‘locker room talk’ if it leads to a boost in their pride, their status, their brotherhood?

Words have power, they have meaning. Language leads to action, action leads to harm, and most of the time the harm is suffered by Irish women. Why? The patriarchy, toxic masculinity, rape culture; all of it allows Irish men to feel a level of invincibility which encourages them. In Dublin, many of the ‘elite’ schools are segregated by gender; men and women at a young age with privilege only interact on nights out, at school discos most of the time. With alcohol and not many clothes covering them, women are deemed as useless without their looks, but a woman who is sexually provocative is a ‘slut’, a ‘whore’, ‘asking for it’. We are presumed guilty until proven innocent, handed double standards we can never beat, and fear for our safety the second it turns dark, much to the obliviousness of men.

Of course, rape and sexual assault occur where men are the victims, and find it incredibly difficult to speak about or get help due to the culture of masculinity where being a victim is shamed. Only by spreading awareness, and actual facts as well as sexual consent training and sexual education can we reduce the horrifying statistics.

I was given a single self-defence class at school. Just one. The main thing it taught me was that in the instance of rape, you are to yell the word, ‘fire’, because only then will someone come to offer aid.

A viral post on Facebook by a user named Drew McKenna shared a passage from Jackson Katz’ book named The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help. A prominent social researcher, he decided to test his audience on the ways which they protect themselves on a daily basis from sexual assault. The results were alarming, but not surprising.

The reaction from the male side is especially interesting;

“He first describes the reaction on the male side. “At first there is a kind of awkward silence as the men try to figure out if they’ve been asked a trick question. The silence gives way to a smattering of nervous laughter. Occasionally, a young a guy will raise his hand and say, ‘I stay out of prison.’ This is typically followed by another moment of laughter, before someone finally raises his hand and soberly states, “Nothing. I don’t think about it.'”

Of course, the women could talk all day about how they defend themselves from the threat of rape or sexual assault. “As the men sit in stunned silence, the women recount safety precautions they take as part of their daily routine.” The replies were then arranged into a list, contrasting with the male answers. From holding your car keys between your fingers, never leaving drinks unattended, using a male voice on an answering machine, not wearing headphones in public, not using car parks or parking in dimly lit areas, not meeting a man in private on dates- it paints a horrible picture of the normality of female self-protection, and the total lack of awareness from the male point of view. More men than I can say have refused to walk me home, brought me a drink without watching what men around him were doing to it, spoken in a disgusting manner about women; all without realising that they were causing harm.

All men believe they are good.

“I moved on her like a b****, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married. “I did try and f*** her.”

“You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the p****. You can do anything.”

Many Irish men like to believe that Donald Trump is an anomaly, something to be laughed at, not feared. Irish women know better. The vast majority of us can report that we’ve been sexually harassed, one-in-four of us will report being sexually assaulted compared to one-in-71 men. A report by Union of Students Ireland (USI) in 2013 found that 1 in 7 people will experience some form of unwanted sexual contact during their time in college. The reports of femicide this year are equally terrifying, with the majority of cases occurring where the perpetrator was a husband, boyfriend or partner of the woman killed.

The line between harassment and assault is easily crossed. Words are just the beginning.

By now we all know that music festivals are far from the most hygienic places on earth, but when certain urges come a calling, it seems there are an awful lot of people choosing to ignore that fact.

Maybe it's the alcohol, or perhaps it's all that sunlight, but a new survey has revealed that 9.4 per cent who have had sex at a festival have done so in a portaloo.

Yes, really.

For some unknown reason, a hell of a lot of people have decided that a plastic container filled with human waste is the ideal place to get down and (very, very) dirty.

Conducted by online ticket marketplace TickPick, the research showed that one-third of the 1,000 people surveyed admitted to having sex at a music festival.

Apart from portaloos, most people chose more private locations with tents (58 per cent ), cars (48.4 per cent) and camper vans (20.3 per cent) proving to be the most popular.

When it comes to oral sex, 46.4 percent of attendees said they’ve done it with someone they just met.

So, in short, wherever  and however you decide to get your festival freak on, just be sure to practice safe sex and bring plenty of wet wipes.

Fun Facts You May Not Know About The Zodiac Signs

People born under each sign inhibit general traits or characteristics which define that particular Zodiac sign. And we tend to be keen to know our probable future based on our Zodiac. While the predictions can be a hit or miss, it’s fun to read about what the future may hold.

But where did these Zodiacs come from? Originally, Babylonians created a mathematical approach, which in modern times is known as Astrology, to help predict weather and farming seasons.

This method was then adopted by other civilizations like the Greeks and later Arabs to make their own weather predictions. Many think that the zodiac signs are based on Greek gods, and powerful ones at that! Although mythology marred many versions of it throughout history, true astrology is very different.

Eventually, this practice had gained so much popularity that even kings and queens began to use it in their daily lives. The Egyptians also used the Zodiac signs as part of their Lunar Calendar.

Soon the Zodiac signs were incorporated into Astrology in order to understand the science of the stars and wider universe.

Let’s take a look at more fun facts about these Zodiac signs and what makes them so fascinating to read about!

Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18)
The word itself has ‘aqua’ in it. Surely it must be the water Zodiac? This is a common myth among people. The Aquarius’ sign is actually air. Women born under Aquarius signs are known to be in their own dreamland.

They are passionate, brilliant and witty in nature but can also lack empathy and patience. Due to the quirky and airy nature of Aquarius, they are known for being creative and somewhat distant from reality.

The Hippie Movement of the ’70s is also called The Age of Aquarius.

Pisces (Feb 19-March 20)
Symbolized by two fishes, the Pisces sign is the actual Zodiac which represents the element of water. Pisces are creative, passionate and extremely talented in their work.

Pisces women, in particular, can be intuitive and empathetic. However, their need to put others first is also their downfall as they trust people too much.

In Greek mythology, Pisces is associated with the Goddess Athena. Unlike other gods, Athena literally was born from Zeus’ head. She sprang from his massive migraine, fully grown and ready to fight.

Not only was she the Goddess of War like her brother Ares, but she was also the one in charge of wisdom, mathematics, courage, and civilization. Oh, and she was also Zeus’ favorite child.

Aries (March 21-April 19)
Aries women are not easy to tame. They are fierce, independent and free-spirited. In the old calendars and even by modern standards, Aries is the Zodiac sign which kicks off the months of spring. Hence, it is technically the first Zodiac sign.

Due to the competitive nature of Aries, the sign is linked with the Greek God of War, Ares. Even though the god was known for violence and war, he was also famous for his love affair with Aphrodite.

He certainly passed on his traits to all the Aries out there!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Taurus women are characterized to be extremely beautiful and somewhat free-spirited when it comes to sexual needs. Ruled by Ares’ girlfriend Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, Taurus women are passionate and love unconditionally.

On the downside, Tauruses are extremely possessive and jealous. Aphrodite herself was known to be an extremely jealous person.

Her jealousy caused many wars to take place including the famous Trojan War. So scorning a Taurus may just not be the best thing to do.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Gemini women can either be eternally optimistic or a party pooper who is always in melancholy. They are always in two minds, unable to decide what to choose.

They love to travel and keep themselves busy yet at the same time, they cannot decide on one plan. They need specific guidelines and being vague with them only increases their confusion.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Women born under the Cancer sign can seem snobbish, stubborn and aloof. Earning their loyalty is a long journey but once she trusts someone, she will be loyal for life.

They are ruled by their feelings and hence are terrible at hiding their thoughts. If a Cancer is angry, everyone will know it by her expression alone.

In Greek myths, Cancer is attributed to Goddess Hera. Hera was known for her temper but was also gentle and protective when she needed to be. While she loved her own children, she would not hesitate to toss her enemies off the grid either!

The reason why Cancer sign is a crab is because she sent a crab to bite her half-son Hercules while he was duelling Hydra.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)
The maiden sign, Virgo, represents loyalty. Virgo women are extremely hardworking and loyal to a fault. They are observant and practical. However, they can also lack self-esteem and rarely enjoy life.

In Greek myth, the sign Virgo is associated with Persephone, the doomed queen of the Underworld. When Hades kidnaps her, her mother tried to bring her back.

Torn between her love for Hades and her mother, Persephone was unable to decide her own fate. As a result, she has to spend half the month year with her mother and the other half with Hades in the Underworld.

Libra (September 23-October 22)
Libra women are adventurous and playful. They are up for a dare any day! The gemstone associated with Libra is smokey quartz which represents the restless nature of Libra.

They always need to be in action and on the run.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Scorpio has always been seen in a negative light by astrologers for being too evil and dark. In reality, Scorpio women are just intense about their feelings. They are charismatic and give off an aura of elegance.

Despite the negativity surrounding Scorpio, they are resilient. They are represented by the animal Scorpion, which is known to sting itself to death. They are also represented by the Eagle, which is known to never back down from a fight.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
Sagittarius women are extremely honest, confident and ooze magnetism. They are easy-going and can easily move on. Their charm sure can melt everyone’s hearts!

However, they can be too energetic. They get bored easily and in their haste to move forward, can end up hurting others.

Capricorn (December 21-January 19)
Capricorn women possess wisdom and are extremely resourceful. They have rough exteriors but are a softie at heart. Females born under the Capricorn sign are true to their beliefs and prefer to stay at home rather than venture out.

However, they can be easily misunderstood due to their stoic expressions. They find it difficult to communicate. A little smile once in a while may make people feel more relaxed around them.

While Zodiac signs are fun to read about, one cannot help but think how true these things really are. People may be able to relate some of the Zodiac traits with their personalities but these signs should not rule someone’s judgement. So ladies, even if you have fun reading up fortunes and future predictions, it is best to keep reality in check and don’t let the stars fall on you!

A recent YouGov study has revealed that employees who are part of the LGBTQ+ community have annual salaries of roughly 16 percent less than their straight, non-trans (cisgender) colleagues.

The discrepancy adds up to about £7,000 per year, or €7,800. The study of UK workers was conducted by LinkedIn in partnership with Black Pride, and 4,019 workers took part.

The income gap was calculated by asking participants about their Gross Personal Income, with 2,154 straight, non-trans participants and 1,863 LGBTQ+ respondents.

The total earnings of both groups were compared, including salary, wages and rent before tax deduction. Unsurprisingly, homophobic activity is still fire in the workplace, according to the data.

28 percent of LGBTQ+ respondents said they are not out at work because of the fear of judgement, and 47 percent of these employees had no plans to come out in the future.

35 percent of LGBTQ+ participants in the study claimed to have witnessed homophobia at work, and 21 percent had experienced personal verbal abuse at work.

Other findings included the fact that female LGBTQ+ employees are actually more likely to hide their sexual orientation at work than men, and 14 percent of LGBTQ+ professionals feel their chances of promotion would be less likely if they came out at work.

Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Black Pride, emphasises the importance of continuing to fight for equality;

"Whilst it's brilliant to see research like this highlighting the conversation, it's vital that there is change in the day-to-day cultures of companies to help LGBTQ employees feel comfortable at work, including those of colour that may also be experiencing discrimination and racism." she says.

It's clear there are still substantial issues which hinder LGBTQ+ professionals, and it's morally right to have an equal working environment for all.

We all love a girls night out on the town, but this new survey has given us a bit of a jolt. New statistics have shown that Irish women placed fourth in a table of 189 countries investigating heavy drinking.

Basically, we are some of the biggest binge drinkers in the entire world…Let that sink in. The global study shows that 40 percent of Irish people are genuinely classed as binge drinkers, which is shocking.

The large shift in recent years from drinking in bars and pubs to to purchasing alcohol in supermarkets and off-licences has accounted for the majority of alcohol sales in Ireland. Home consumption makes it far more difficult to keep track of your drinking.

Overall, including men and intersex people, Ireland ranks fifth in the world rankings of drinkers.

Only women in Moldova, Lithuania and the Czech Republic were found to drink more than Irish women. The Irish drink over 13 litres of alcohol each year, according to the Lancet medical journal.

Ireland has the second highest rate of binge drinking in the world, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), and this was confirmed by the Healthy Ireland (2015) survey.

'The National Alcohol Diary Survey', carried out by the HRB, found that 75 percent of the alcohol consumed in Ireland in 2013 was done through binge drinking. Alcohol intake in this country is typically underestimated by around 60 percent.

The study also showed that the number of teetotaliers is actually dropping, going from 19 percent of the nation in 1990 to just nine percent in 2017.

Research estimates that by 2030, half of all adults in the entire world will drink alcohol. This is a major change from the past, when people refrained for health or religious reasons. Nearly a quarter of the population will binge drink at least once a month.

According to Alcohol Ireland, binge drinking is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), as six or more standard drinks in one session, which is the equivalent of three or more pints of beer or six or more pub measures of spirits."

Through binge drinking, people are far more likely to make errors in judgement, engage in violence, drive while drunk or experience negative mental health side effects.

Be careful, ladies (and gents), and brush up on your knowledge of the standard drinking amounts. If you're binge drinking at home, it's important to know the risks.

We were already obsessed with Bleach London before they rebranded their packaging as 100 percent recycled cardboard and eco-friendly materials.

She wrote, “As our families & close friends know, this has been a long & very tough journey for us, sadly with multiple miscarriages along the way. We’ve dreamed of being parents for many years and I would have loved to carry my own baby, but for reasons unknown (most likely embryo rejection due to an overactive immune system) & although tests show excellent fertility, I’ve been unable to sustain any of my pregnancies, despite the best efforts of reproductive immunology experts & a lot of immune-suppressant medication, injections, intravenous infusions & surgery.”

Rosanna decided that gestational surrogacy was the best option for her after seeking advice from medical professionals, “Gestational surrogacy abroad became our only viable option for a biological child & we’re so thankful for the wonders of modern medicine & reproductive science."

The mum-to-be thanked all of the medical staff who are “making our family dream come true.” She also gushed about their surrogate, “Thanks to our amazing surrogate for keeping our little daughter healthy and safe… We already love her so much & can’t wait to finally hold her!”

Rosanna offered a message of support to those who are dealing with pregnancy loss and facing fertility struggles.

“If you’re going through this, I send you all of my love and support. As painful as it is, I’ve found that talking about it openly with trusted family & friends is deeply healing & greatly helps to reduce the stigma & sense of helplessness.

“Proper awareness, support & understanding is crucial to the challenging physical & emotional recovery process, especially when all you want to do is blame yourself. Most of all, stay strong, positive & don’t give up on your family dreams… miracles really do happen,” she concluded.

Rosanna’s pregnancy announcement will certainly help women in similar situations feel a lot better. We couldn’t be happier for her.

Another day, another inanimate object being compared to women. This time it's not a car, or a boat; It's a Starbucks coffee order.

No, we're not joking. With temperatures rising, it's only right that toxic patriarchal bullsh*t also rises. Stylist spotted the tweet online and we've been boiling our blood ever since.

Twitter user and Starbucks executive David Brunelle has shared an email online which he received that compares women to a coffee order, and Brunelle shut that man down so damn fast:

A salesperson was called out for a "blatant example of sexism" after writing;

"What's your go-to order? I like my women like I like my Starbucks Coffee order: Tall, Blonde, Americano…" Wow. We wonder how long he'd been waiting to write that down for.

Brunelle is a director of product engineering at the popular coffee chain, and he decided to post the incriminating message on Twitter for us all to rage at:

The executive absolutely OWNS the salesman in his reply, and we appreciate the allyship. Men often struggle with calling out sexism publicly.

Brunelle was brave to share the email, given that it could have put him in a compromising position with Starbucks. He gives a masterclass in pointing out casual sexism;

“You lost me with this line: ‘I like my women like I like my Starbucks Coffee order: Tall Blonde, Americano…’,” he wrote.

“Tech can be a challenging place for women. Your statement perpetuates the mindset that women are here for our entertainment. I don’t believe that to be true."

He continues;

“This type of statement also makes a few dangerous assumptions: That I’m heterosexual and will relate to the objectification of women. That I’m cisgender and haven’t personally been objectified/alienated. That I’d feel comfortable objectifying women behind closed doors.”

Starbucks is a company that boasts unequivocal tolerance and inclusion, so, as an executive, he feels a sense of responsibility.

“One of my company’s values, that I am deeply committed to upholding is ‘Creating a culture of warmth and belonging, where everyone is welcome,’" he writes.

"I’m also dedicated to increasing diversity in technology. In order to increase the number of women and minorities in this field, we need to foster an environment where everyone feels safe and supported.”

David Brunelle went out with a bang: “It doesn’t seem like our values align.”

"After careful consideration, I decided to share this email with the company's CEO and VP of Sales," he emphasised.

"I suggested this person be given an opportunity to receive training and contribute to D&I efforts vs. being punished. This type of attitude is just too problematic to brush off."

*Rapturous applause* What a guy. We wish all men were like David, he's the absolute OG beast.
