Taylor Swift is set to release a new Christmas song tomorrow called Christmas Tree Farm.

The Lover singer announced the festive news this afternoon and we seriously need to calm down.

She stunned fans when she revealed that the Christmas song will be released at midnight tonight (in the USA)

And that’s not all.

The All Too Well singer is also releasing a music video which is made entirely from home videos and there’s no doubt it’s going to turn us into blubbering messes.

She jokingly posted a video of her and her cats to share the news.

The 29-year-old spoke to her pets in the witty clip, “I know this is pretty wild but I’ve just written a Christmas song. I feel like it’s weird to wait a year to put it out. So, I don’t know what to do.”

Her three pets completely ignored her so Taylor decided to release the song herself, “When in doubt, ask the itty bitty pretty kitty committee,” she wrote alongside the video.

She added, “When they shun you with silence, ambivalence, and judgmental brush offs … just put the song out anyway.”

Forget about Bublé and Mariah Carey! Taylor’s festive tune is bound to be a major hit. It'll be on repeat for the rest of December.

I’m counting down the minutes to its release.

The horrid norovirus is making its annual rounds and we’re praying we don’t catch it this winter. The common stomach bug is highly contagious and causes vomiting and diarrhoea.

There is no specific cure, so it has to be left to run its course though it shouldn’t last more than a couple of days.

Between 10,000 and 20,000 people per week can catch norovirus in a peak period.

Symptoms:

The first sign of norovirus is usually an abrupt feeling of nausea followed by sick feeling followed by forceful vomiting and watery diarrhoea.

Some people may also have: A raised temperature (over 38C/100.4F), headaches, stomach cramps and aching limbs.

Symptoms usually appear one to two days after you have become infected but they can start sooner. Most people recover fully within a couple of days.

Aside from the risk of becoming dehydrated, the illness is not usually dangerous and there are usually no long-lasting effects from having norovirus. However, it can be a pretty unpleasant experience while you have it.

What is the treatment for Norovirus (Winter-vomiting bug)?

The winter vomiting bug is a virus so there is no cure, it is therefore best to let the illness run its course and you will fight off the infection within a few days.

It’s important that you drink plenty of fluids and take paracetamol for any fever, aches of pains.

To reduce the risk of passing the virus onto others, ensure that your hands are washed regularly and that you stay at home until they are clear of symptoms for 48 hours. Avoid visiting elderly people, ill family/friends and pregnant women until the symptoms have been gone for two full days.

Doctors say:

Doctors have urged people with the virus to stay away from GP surgeries and hospitals, unless absolutely necessary.

This week, Tesco Ireland is calling on locals to join festive fun in-store nationwide to help raise vital funds for sick children this Christmas tomorrow Friday and Saturday, to join Tesco colleagues for a series of ‘Festive Fun Days’ in aid of charity partner, Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. Seasonal cheer is set to top the shopping list as customers are treated to a selection of festive fun including Christmassy cake sale, fun face painters, and limited edition festive floral bouquets, all in aid of raising much needed funds for sick children this Christmas.

Hosted by Tesco colleagues across Ireland, this year’s series of ‘Festive Fun Days’ aim to raise €150,000 for the little heroes of Temple Street, with all of the vital funds raised going towards purchasing an advanced Retinal Camera for the Theatre ward, needed for Temple Street to ensure that each child receives the best care possible. Using this new equipment, an Ophthalmologist can ensure timely intervention, which can prevent loss of sight and in the case of Retinal cancer can cure many cases.

You can give your host the perfect gift this festive season with Tesco’s Christmas themed floral bouquet in aid of Temple Street. The beautiful bouquet is an ideal gift for your host this festive season and contains a combination of happy pink mini gerbera, with a mix of purple, pink and white chrysanthemums with some beautiful touches of frosted pinecones, decorative scented cinnamon sticks and glittered foliage.

These bouquets are available in stores nationwide priced at €10.00 and a donation of €1.00 per bouquet sold will be made to Temple Street.

Each year Temple Street treats over 150,000 children from across the country and for thousands of children, Temple Street is the only hospital in Ireland in which they can be treated. Temple Street has been Tesco Ireland’s charity partner since October 2014 and to-date Tesco Ireland has raised €4.7 million in aid of the little heroes of Temple Street.

The ISPCA is issuing a reminder that pets do not make good gifts and should never be bought on a whim or given as a surprise at any time of year.

The charity have re-released a thought provoking video called #PuppyDotCon, previously issued by the Irish Pet Advertising Advisory Group (IPAAG), of which the ISPCA is a founding member, which demonstrates how easy it is to be fooled by unscrupulous dog breeders and highlights the dangers of buying a pet after responding to an online advert.

Any new puppy, kitten or even an adult pet placed in a new home during the busy festive season can find the process very stressful, especially young puppies separated from their siblings.

What any new pet really needs is a quiet, calm, safe home where routines can be established straight away so everyone has a good start and can easily adjust to new surroundings.

During the Christmas festivities is not the best time to introduce a new pet in your home says the ISPCA.

A post shared by ISPCA (@ispca_official) on

ISPCA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andrew Kelly said: “Responsible pet owners understand the commitment involved in owning a pet but in the lead up to Christmas, it can be easy to give in to pressure from Children looking to get a new puppy or a kitten.

"The ISPCA is asking parents to reconsider giving a pet as a gift this Christmas as taking on a pet is a long-term commitment that can affect your life for the next 15 years so it needs to be a well thought out decision with all the family. Pets do not make good gifts and should never be given as a surprise at any time of year”.

Andrew added:  “There are a number of unscrupulous puppy breeders who cater for the Christmas market and is important to do your research and have adequate time and financial resources to care for a pet responsibly.  This year, the ISPCA is asking animal lovers to consider giving the gift of feeding a dog or puppy, a cat or kitten at one of the three ISPCA animal centres this Christmas.

"When you purchase a Thoughtful Gift from the ISPCA Shop, you will be helping many rescued animals in need this Christmas. 100% of profits from merchandise sales will go towards funding our life-saving work. You can also sign up to become an ISPCA volunteer or help out your local rescue centre this Christmas”.

"It’s not the case that on Stephen’s Day we see an influx of abandoned animals", said Andrew.  "We do see a problem later in the spring and summer months when puppies may have lost their ‘cute appeal’ when they might have started picking up bad habits due to the lack of attention, training, exercise and socialisation."

The charity recommends that you wait until after the festive season and go to the ISPCA for advice where expert staff will ensure that you and your new pet are a suitable match. Pets adopted from the ISPCA National Animal Centre will be health-checked, vaccinated, neutered or spayed and microchipped and the Centre is open to visitors Wednesday to Sunday from 11am – 4pm daily (Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day).

As a charitable organisation, the ISPCA relies on public support for approximately 88% of funds which they receive through donations enabling us to continue our vital work rescuing animals that need help and rehabilitation costs are expensive. If you can this Christmas, please make a donation to support our work here.

It’s no big secret that we have all become phone, screen and social media addicts. It seems we are rarely present in the moment these days, as we always feel the need to capture all the big (and small) events in our lives, on our phones. Whether it’s at a concert, at the gym, on holiday, or even just at the dinner table… why is it so hard for us to put our phones away for a few hours?

This addiction to our phones and the online world was certainly something I had become accustomed to over the past five or so years, and it puzzled me, why was I so hooked to my phone?

What good was this constant scrolling, checking for notifications and need to keep up with the Kardashians' daily lives actually bringing to my life?

After discovering a video online, about a girl who quit social media for one month, I decided to challenge myself and try to do the same. I deleted all social media apps from my phone (Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook).

The first week was WEIRD. I was finding myself feeling quite bored at little gaps throughout the day, such as on my commute.

While everyone else was staring at their phones, I had nothing to look at. I wondered if I might be missing out on some big celebrity news that may have come out online. I kept going to click into apps on my phone, even though they weren’t there anymore.

The second week was NICE. I was already noticing lots of positive changes at this point, in myself and in my life and I found it was easier to continue the detox from this point on.

The first month came and passed and I never even for a second considered going back online at that point. I had come so far, I was enjoying the freedom and my new outlook too much to go back.

Five months later, I was still offline and living a completely new, happier life. I felt different, it was like a weight had been lifted and I was so motivated to share my story. I was finally beginning to understand the importance of self-care and started seeing everything in a new light.

Here are the important things I noticed during my Social Media Detox:

  • During the first two weeks of my social-media-free life, I noticed just how often I glanced down at my phone, without even thinking, and it was staggering.

  • I was sleeping much better and for longer – the less grumpy and less stressed version of me began to appear.

  • My anxiety reduced by 90 percent – this was by far the most significant change I noticed and loved about this whole experiment.

  • JOMO – the joy of missing out has actually become a thing. It was lovely just doing my own thing and not knowing, or worrying about what everyone else was up to. When I wanted to hang out with my friends, I just messaged or called them, and this worked perfectly. I didn’t have a fear of missing out on anything (FOMO), which is something I worried I would experience, before the detox.

  • I just stopped caring about the crazy things we do for social media, like taking photos of our food whenever we go out to eat and sending it to everyone.

  • I didn’t feel any pressure to get that perfect Instagram photo or Snapchat story everywhere I went. I went to an outdoor concert and felt there was no pressure on me now to look perfect and get lots of amazing photos to post online. I felt I enjoyed the whole experience much more than I would have in the past.

  • I read books on my commute instead of staring aimlessly at influencers or celebrities, who I once compared myself to not realising how toxic these comparisons were.

  • I felt like there were more hours in the day and there was. I was amazed by how much more free time I had when I took social media out of my life.

  • I genuinely felt happier, more confident and less stressed out.

After my detox, I did return to the online world, but in a totally different way. I felt it was really important to share my story with others and encourage people to try this Social Media Detox Challenge for themselves and see the impact it could have on their lives. I decided to start writing my thoughts and ideas down. This led to me starting up my own blog on Mental Health & Wellness, called ondayslikethis.com.

A post shared by Laura Lynch – Wellness Blog (@ondayslikethisblog) on

I have returned to Instagram and Facebook but don’t have the apps on my phone anymore as I feel that constant scrolling throughout the day can be toxic for our mental health and body image. I have created a new Instagram page called ondayslikethisblog, where I share only motivating posts, news and information about my blog.

I have also only chosen to follow pages that uplift and inspire me and this most definitely makes a huge difference.

I never returned to Snapchat and still don’t miss it, which is crazy as this is the app I would have used the most before my detox.

With all the above said, I would encourage everyone to detox from social media for a few weeks. I promise you will definitely notice so many nice changes in your life.

Online dating can be very exciting. It can be quite exhilarating compared to traditional dating where you see a person and go up to talk to them. You are doing that, only now through a screen. The big difference is that you can expand the pool of potential dates substantially.

With geographical restrictions taken away, you are free to talk to anyone from anywhere. Just a quick hop onto any international dating site and you will be able to talk to someone half the world away or someone just a couple of blocks away or anything in between.

This all seems innocent and cute, until you find out that the person is not who they claimed they were. This can be an emotionally painful experience for many, especially if you only found out after the two of you planned a meetup. Not only can it be emotionally scaring, but some people who are habitual liars on dating sites could potentially be dangerous people who might do you harm.

Doing Your Homework

In many cases of catfishing, it can get serious enough for the situation to warrant the very best background check you can find. Now, there are many things about a person’s life that no private investigator can obtain legally. However, what can be obtained within the confines of the law and good taste can be quite substantial.

You will be able to access public court records to see if the person as described by your online date exists or not. And if they do indeed exist, public records can also ascertain a few pieces of information such as the most recent mailing address so that you are able to verify a few things.

You will also be able to check if the person has had any prior criminal convictions. All you need to do to access the criminal records of a person is to file a request with the relevant court and the information you seek will be recovered promptly. Most courts will give everyone a freebie and usually ask for a modest processing fee for subsequent requests.

A background check will give you a little bit of insight into who the person on the other side really is who they say they are. If they have been proven to have lied on a substantial piece of information, you will be able to find out quickly with a good background check and be able to properly protect yourself from harm.

Do the Minor Details Really Matter?

Staggeringly, as many as two out of three users of online dating sites have admitted to some degree of lying. This is a very unfortunate reality that everyone who wishes to expand their dating pool to the online space needs to contend with.

For the most part, the lies that people told were superficial in nature. This means they would lie about their age, their weight, the number of past romances they had, and other such things. This is usually in order to seem more desirable in the eyes of the other party and increase the chances of having a long-term relationship with the person.

Statistically, both parties on the exchange are lying about something to the other party. However, these superficial lies do not end up causing any actual harm. If one person lied too much and over exaggerated their desirability, once the two met up, the other party would just walk away after discovering the deception if it was too much.

So, the controversial question raised by some people: is it really that bad when people lie about minor details? Increasingly, many people are becoming more accepting of minor lies that are superficial and largely inconsequential. Some have even equated things like lying about your age to the use of makeup because cosmetics are designed to give a more youthful appearance.

While it is preferable to tell the truth all the time, many have pointed at the fact that we are all human at the end of the day. Given the human search for validation being as great as it is, can we really blame those who lie for the purposes of attention for their actions when it is already widely practiced by most people? That conclusion will have to be left to the reader to decide on.

Guarding Your Heart

As more and more people around the world go online every day, the opportunity for human interaction on the world wide web has greatly increased. Unfortunately, so have the potential pitfalls that can arise. The more people you can interact with, the more pleasant people you can come into contact with, and the more crazies as well.

Now more than ever, it is important for us to make sure we know who the person on the other side is. It would be nice if we could trust anyone we met online from the get-go, but unfortunately, we do not live in ideal world. The online world requires a greater level of scrutiny since we are not able to use any of our in-built human instincts to assess a person’s character.

Ultimately, a good deal of judgement and self-responsibility is needed to navigate this brave new world. We must take matters into our own hands and take the precautionary steps necessary to guard not just our hearts, but our entire person so that we do not get into a situation that has no happy ending.
