How to stay cosy this winter

Winter has arrived this week with sharp frost appearing in the mornings – so keeping cosy at home is uppermost on our minds. As well as a welcomed return of the snuggly jumpers and socks, you also need to make sure your home is conserving as much heat as possible. Here's are top tips to ensure you're as snug as a bug in a run in your home this winter.

1. Invest in insulation

This is a really important one – it critical to keep in the heat in winter, but will also retain the cool air in summer. It's definitely a big investment but one that will reap rewards in the years to come. Otherwise you're throwing good money after bad if heating is escaping through the walls, floors and ceilings every time you turn it on.

It's also worthwhile getting your roof inspected, that way you know if there are issues that need attention before the really bad weather kicks in.

2. Make sure your boiler is working efficiently

Your boiler should be serviced regularly by a registered service provider. Your boiler provides the heat you need in the winter, but also hot water throughout the year – nobody wants a cold shower! If your boiler is not working efficiently, it will cost you money in the long run, so you should consider replacing it, if it's working well, you need to make sure you're maintaining it with annual services. For lots more information on new boilers and servicing options for your current boiler – check out the options here . The peace of mind with these services mean that even if the worst happens, you have the support on hand to get it fixed.

3. Hang heavy curtains

One of the cost-efficient ways of keeping your home warm is to use heavy curtains. They can act as a barrier for the little wind that escapes from windows and insulate the room by providing a layer of insulation. Make sure you're windows are not letting warm escpae also – in lots of instances, you can get the hinges tightened, rather than having to replace them, if they're still relatively new.

4. Use carpets and rugs

One of the easiest ways to create a cosy room is to add carpets or rugs – especially if you currently have wooden floors. If you'd prefer to keep the wooden floors, then invest in some rugs to use in colder weather. This is a really cheap way to maximise the heat in each room, while still enjoying the effect of wooden floors.

Stay cosy!
