James Corden & Ruth Jones confirm Gavin & Stacey Christmas special
It's finally official – Gavin and Stacey is returning for another Christmas special!
After months of speculation, co-stars and co-writers James Corden and Ruth Jones have announced that the last-ever episode of the hit BBC sitcom will air this Christmas.
James – best known for his role as Smithy in Gavin and Stacey – took to social media earlier today to reveal the wonderful news.
On Instagram, the 45-year-old posted a black-and-white photo of himself and Ruth holding up the script for the finale.
"Some news… It's official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James," the pair penned in a joint statement.
Many fans of the beloved show have since taken to James’ comments section to express their delight.
“This has made my whole year!!!” one follower exclaimed.
“I for one cannot wait,” another commented.
“Will we find out what happened on the fishing trip,” a third fan questioned, referring to one of the show’s biggest mysteries.
Viewers have been left wondering of the show’s fate since Christmas 2019, when the last Gavin and Stacey festive special aired.
The previous episode ended on a huge cliffhanger, when Ruth’s character Nessa spontaneously proposed to Smithy, but fans never got to find out his response.
It is believed that all members of the cast – including the likes of Larry Lamb, Rob Brydon and Joanna Page – will be returning for the final outing to Barry Island and Billericay.
Rumours of an additional Christmas special first began in February, when Deadline initially reported that a new episode was on the way.
The following day, co-creator Ruth denied the story, stating at the time to RTÉ Radio One: “So, it’s sadly a rumor. I don’t know what to say. All I can say is that if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it. You know, we would.”
