The Gaiety unveils cast for adaptation of award-winning The Ferryman

The Gaiety Theatre has announced the cast for one of their upcoming productions!

For the first time out of Broadway and the West End, Jez Butterworth’s Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning The Ferryman is being brought to the Irish stage.

The Ferryman will be directed by Andrew Flynn and will run at The Gaiety Theatre for six weeks, from January 27 to March 8 of next year.

The Ferryman is inspired by the true family story of Laura Donnelly, the wife of Jez Butterworth and actress who originated the leading role in the West End and on Broadway. Seven months before she was born, Donnelly’s 26-year-old uncle disappeared in Co. Down.

Set in County Armagh in 1981, the logline for The Ferryman reads: “The Carney farmhouse is a hive of activity with preparations for the annual harvest. A day of hard work on the land and a traditional night of feasting and celebrations lie ahead. But in the Maze prison, the IRA hunger strikers are dying. Out on the bog, a body has been dug up. And this year, their usual harvest celebrations will be interrupted by an unexpected visitor.”

The production will feature a cast of 21, and will also include a live baby, a live goose and a live rabbit.

3 generations of actors will be taking to to the Gaiety Theatre stage for The Ferryman, including the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody’s  Aaron McCusker, Conversation With Friends’ Alex Murphy, Ballywalter’s Andrew McClay, Orlando’s Anna Healy and The Banshees of Inisherin’s Bríd Ní Neachtain.

Also starring in The Ferryman will be Peaky Blinders’ Charlene McKenna, The Last Right’s Colm O’Brien, Darklands’ Dane Whyte-O’Hara, Detainment’s Ely Solan, Line of Duty’s James Murphy and Fair City’s Joe Hanley.
