AUDIO Listen to Kanye’s Honorary Doctorate acceptance speech
“I am a pop artist so my medium is public opinion, and the world is my canvass.”
That's how Kanye West opened his acceptance speech at the School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate yesterday.
Kanye briefly attended the institution before dropping out to pursue his music career. He named his 2004 debut solo album, The College Dropout, an offering which went on to win a Grammy.
His academic late mother, Dr Donda West, was the Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University.
“When I was giving a lecture at Oxford, I brought up this school because when I went out on that mission to create other spaces — apparel, film, performance — it would’ve been easier if I could have said I had a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago,” he also said in his four-minute long speech.
His wife of a year, Kim Kardashian, was unable to attend as she was in Brazil promoting her new book, Selfish, but she leant her support via Instagram.
