Enjoy a magical Winter escape to Winterval in Waterford

by

Winterval in Waterford is the perfect way to celebrate the festive season with family and friends. This year, MummyPages had the pleasure of exploring all that this enchanting event has to offer. Ciara and her family of four (including 13-year-old Elle and 9-year-old Ryan) kicked off their festive season at Winterval and here's how they got on.

A Warm Welcome at Mount Congreve Estate

Our Winterval weekend began with an unforgettable stay at the Mount Congreve Estate, located on the edge of Waterford City. We stayed at the charming Gate Lodge, an ideal home-away-from-home for families. From the thoughtful welcome pack to the luxurious Foxford soft furnishings and SMEG appliances, every detail was carefully curated to ensure comfort. The hot water bottles were a lovely touch.

For those considering a visit, Mount Congreve offers events throughout the festive season. We’re already planning our return and encouraging friends and family to explore this gem. Check out their full lineup at mountcongreve.com

Exploring Waterford City and Soaking Up the Festive Spirit

Saturday morning brought us to the heart of Waterford City. The festive cheer was in full swing in Arundel Square, with twinkling lights and bustling market stalls setting the scene. We kick-started our Christmas shopping, enjoyed delicious hot chocolate, and indulged in churros — an instant hit with the kids!

Lunch at No. 9 Barronstrand Street was a standout moment. Nestled within George’s Court Shopping Centre, this family-friendly eatery is a haven for parents and kids alike. From an array of highchairs and baby bouncers to a dedicated play area, it’s clear that Lisa and her team have thought of everything. The food was just as impressive—Ryan says the pasta was “the best ever!” We can’t wait to return. Learn more about their offerings at thestableyard.ie.

Entertainment Galore: From Comedy to Crystal

Our afternoon was spent in fits of laughter at the Trash Test Dummies show at Garter Lane Theatre. This circus-comedy act brought interactive fun and belly laughs for all ages. With shows running up to Christmas week, tickets are still available at Garter Lane.

The evening took a magical turn with the Winterval Parade and pyrotechnics show, best enjoyed from the stunning House of Waterford Crystal. The crystal displays were dazzling, and the festive atmosphere was nothing short of enchanting.

Dinner at the historic Granville Hotel was the perfect way to round off the day. Festive dishes like turkey and ham and complimentary mince pies added a delightful seasonal touch. The exceptional staff ensured a warm, memorable experience.

Sunday Adventures: Ice Skating and Santa Visits

Sunday morning was spent exploring the picturesque grounds of Mount Congreve before heading back to Waterford City for some family fun. Winterval On Ice was a highlight for everyone—fiberglass penguins provided a fun skating aid for younger children, making it an accessible activity for all. Secure your spot early at On Ice.

Next, we ventured into the Viking Triangle for a thrilling Santa’s VR Ride experience. This immersive six-minute journey left us all in awe and eager for more. Tickets are €8 and can be purchased on-site. For younger children, the vintage carousel and Winterval Mini Express train are perfect.

A Treasured Tradition: Visiting Santa Claus

No Winterval trip would be complete without meeting Santa Claus. Hosted in the Medieval Museum’s atmospheric basement, the setup was magical. From the playful waiting area to the Santa photo session, it really was a great set up.
