Gardaí make appeal following discovery of unconscious woman

A community in Carlow have expressed their shock over the discovery of an injured woman on the grounds of the Pollerton Castle in Co Carlow yesterday.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 50s, was unconscious when a passerby happened upon her and was subsequently transferred to St Luke's Hospital in Co Kilkenny.

Speaking to the Irish Independent in the hours following his discovery, the man said: "We're all very shocked here. I was told not to comment on what I had seen, but I just hope that this woman is OK."

Echoing these sentiments, local councillor Jim Deane reiterated the community's shock and expressed his concern for the woman's welfare.

"Many people around the town are talking about this awful incident," he said.

"Whatever the circumstances are it's truly a horrific thing to have happened. I hope this poor, unfortunate girl who is the victim of this assault makes a speedy recovery," he added.

As a technical examination of the scene is conducted, Gardaí have asked members of the public to come forward if they were in the vicinity of Staplestown Road, St Patricks Avenue or Pollerton Road between 2am and 5am yesterday.

Issuing an appeal, a spokespeson said: "Gardaí are appealing to any drivers of vehicles that may have travelled these roads between the above times and have footage from dashcams to contact them at Carlow garda station on 059-9136620, The garda confidential telephone line 1800 666 111 or any garda station."

It is understood that the woman is currently in a serious condition.
