‘It was a great outcome’: Stranded dolphin rescued by gardaí in Tralee
A poor stranded dolphin was rescued by gardaí yesterday morning on a beach in Tralee, County Kerry.
A dolphin became stuck on Cockelshell beach on the outskirts of Tralee just before 9am yesterday, and a member of the public raised the alarm.
The struggling animal was discovered, and two gardaí attended the scene to keep the distressed mammal safe. Assistance from the local fire serves then arrived.
The bottle-nosed swimmer was released back into the ocean after finding it's way into trouble on the beach.
A source told the Irish Mirror: "The dolphin had stranded on the beach at low tide and was spotted by a person walking in the area.
"There was no one else to call so the guards were phoned and they came out and set about saving the life of the animal," they continued.
The famous Fungi is known for roaming the Tralee area, but the local celebrity isn't believed to be the mammal that was beached yesterday.
A garda spokesman said:
"Gardaí in Tralee attended the scene of an incident on Cockelshell Road, Tralee at approximately 8.15am today Thursday 25th July 2019 where a dolphin was discovered beached.
"Local Fire Services were called and they assisted Gardaí in returning the dolphin to the water."
