‘Mic drop’ Twitter can’t stop talking about Meryl Streep’s GG speech
After being honoured with the Cecil B. De Mille Award at last night's Golden Globe Awards, Meryl Streep gave a speech which has sent social media into meltdown.
Without naming any names, the iconic actress gave a scathing assessment of the American President elect Donald Trump in a move which has divided Twitter users today.
While the vast majority praised Meryl for using her moment to offer her opinion on the 45th president, others called Meryl out on supposed hypocrisy.
"There was one performance this year that stunned me," Meryl told the audience. "It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job.”
"It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter."
"Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life."
And, unsurprisingly, Twitter wasted no time sharing their thoughts on Meryl's words.
'Celebrities shouldn't talk about politics'… say people who voted for a reality TV star to be their president. #MerylStreep. #GoldenGlobes.

I loved #MerylStreep speech because it focused on artist core job – empathy. Stepping into someone else's shoes. That's what makes a liberal.

It would have been completely normal for #MerylStreep to talk entirely about her historic career. Instead, she stood up for the bullied.

If we wanted an out-of-touch granny throwing stones at us from her glass house, Hillary would be president.
Ahem…

Sad day when a celeb lies about our President-Elect on national television and is met with applause and lauded as heroic. #MerylStreep

I just want to point out that the people angry at #MerylStreep are angry at her for eloquently condemning the mocking a disabled man.
