New research at NUI Galway to help improve breast cancer treatments

Research which has just been developed at NUI Galway could improve the treatment of breast cancer.

The experts behind the research are looking at specific genetic factors that control how quickly cancer spreads, according to Breaking News.

The scientists are focusing on the Herv K gene, which has associations with tumour development.

'We are hoping we can develop biomarkers for a start, so we can better understand which women have an aggressive disease versus having quite a non-aggressive one,' said Dr Sharon Glynn from NUI Galway.

This assessment will give doctors a better idea of the treatment needed by patients.

'If we know that, we can better decide should people should people receive particular chemotherapies.'
