Oscar-winning director Michael Cimino has passed away at the age of 77.

Known for The Deer Hunter and Heaven's Gate, his good friend director Thierry Fremaux announced the news on Twitter:

"Michael Cimino died peacefully, surrounded by his family and the two women who loved him. We loved him too."

Robert De Niro, who starred Michael's The Deer Hunter which won him the Best Director Academy Award said in a statement: "Our work together is something I will always remember. He will be missed."
