Ah, the ‘90s; the era of multi-coloured shell-suits, when a bum-bag was the most coveted ‘it’ piece we could own, and we looked to Cher Horowitz for style inspo.

While throwbacks to your botched attempt at ‘The Rachel’ may leave you shuddering with mortification, the ‘90s were undoubtedly a time of unique and colourful fashion statements – which is why we are secretly delighted that they're back in vogue!

We're currently obsessed with the twenty-ten twist on ‘90s fashion – think more ‘Gwen circa Don’t Speak’, less ‘Dwayne Robertson rocking a turtle-neck’ – and here are three of our fave looks to try out this spring.

Grunger Girl

Take your inspiration from the rebellious, don’t-give-a-damn punk-rock look of the Nirvana fan of yore.

Your plaid shirt is your best friend, and you work it to the max – with a crop-top and high-waist mom jeans, over a maxi tube dress, with edgy cut-out boots or your favourite trainers.

Complete the look with a slick of deep purple lippie and a choker, and you’re ready to rock.

Sporty Spice

We hope you’ve been practicing your high kicks, because this season is all about ‘athleisure’ – which basically means that you have free licence to wear your trackies and trainers anywhere and everywhere.

For this look, think Sporty Spice with a modern twist – football jerseys under blazers, ADIDAS stripes down the leg of your smart trousers, wear-with-anything bomber jackets, and trainers with EVERYTHING!

Also, remember: a mesh panel in a T-shirt or leggings will give an oh-so subtle and sexy nod to the trend.

It’s no wonder there’s talk of a Clarissa Explains It All revival – not only did the show guide us through the trials and tribulations of pre-adolescence, but her style was quintessential ‘90s – bold, bright and in-your-face!

Flowery brimmed hats aside, Clarissa is our guide this season when it comes to pulling off that cute jeans-and-T-shirt look. Your dungarees and denim pinafore dress are your go-to pieces, to be teamed with a cute crop top or off-the-shoulder number.

A backpack will complete any look, whether you go for an oversized printed T-shirt and leggings, or a basic ribbed bodysuit and ripped high-waist jeans.
