Shocking Discovery: What Do Your Food Choices Say About You?

Do you prefer sweet? Bitter? Or maybe even salty? Your food choices say a lot about your personality. Are you ready to find out more?

You Are What You Eat: What Your Food Choices Say About You

Sweet, bitter, sour – those are not only words that describe food, that’s also how we refer to people’s personalities. Coincidence? We think not.

Everything you do in your everyday life says a lot about who you are as a person: your hobbies, your tendencies to visit Australian online pokies venues, and of course – the meals you eat.

You might have noticed that your cravings change as your mood shifts: sometimes the moment requires something sweet, while on other occasions, you can’t say no to a salty snack. That only shows how our taste is linked to our state of mind, and it may also have a deeper connection to our personality as well.

As kids, we often prefer sweets, but as time goes on, our taste develops and changes, and so does our character. Scientists say that there is a biological link between our psyche and the food we consume, which might explain a lot!

Dr Alan Hirsch, a Neurologist and Psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of smell and taste loss, says: “Through our food preferences and choices we reveal inner thoughts, feelings, wishes, and desires. It’s no exaggeration to say that the foods we choose provide a window to our unconscious.” And he might have a point.

Here is what experts have to say on the matter:

If you Prefer Spicy

It is no coincidence that adventurous, daring people are often described as firecrackers. If you’re always looking for something hot and spicy to excite your palate, you’re probably a person who hates to sit still. Always chasing new adventures, seeking the adrenalin rush that accompanies scary and challenging experiences, and trying new things whenever possible.

Some scientists say that the possible reason behind this behaviour is “benign masochism”, which describes a state of mind in which people derive joy from threatening experiences. That’s why some people like skydiving, watching scary movies and doing anything that will make their heartbeat faster – including eating jalapeno peppers.

If You Prefer Sweet

Those who prefer sweets – chocolate, candy, and anything containing loads of sugar – are often agreeable people who are ready to help others without anticipating getting anything in return.

In a few studies conducted at North Dakota State University, it was shown that people who eat sweet food have a higher tendency of volunteering to perform selfless acts. That doesn’t necessarily mean those people are extroverted, but they still try to be at peace with everyone around them.

If You Prefer Salty

Some say that people who can’t resist a salty snack are often rash, impulsive, and competitive. If you are always looking for an immediate reward and you always move fast , it might influence your food preferences. Or, maybe your eating choices say something else entirely, and your body is simply trying to tell you that you have a mineral deficiency and you need to change your diet.

If You Prefer Bitter

According to Linda Bartoshuk, professor of food science and human nutrition at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, science has a lot to say about the ability to taste bitter foods. Apparently, there are 25 known bitter-related genes, and experts believe they evolved out of necessity to be able to detect bitter poisons. According to studies, most people can’t stand bitter taste simply because of pure survival instinct. However, some people still have a taste for bitter food. Why is that?

For those of you who prefer to eat olives and kale, or drink bitter coffee, it might mean your personality has some darker sides to it.  According to studies, those traits might include selfishness, narcissism, and sadism. And if we go to the extreme, those who love bitter more than anything else might lean towards psychopathy as well.
