Strangers gave a groom with terminal cancer his dream wedding

If there is one story that can restore your faith in humanity this week than this is probably going to be it.

Steve and Laura Monks from Hyde, Greater Manchester got engaged in 2013, three months after their daughter Lydia was born. The couple had a ‘three-year plan’ to help them save enough money for their dream wedding.

Unfortunately, when Steve was diagnosed with stage three liver and bowel cancer they had to ditch their money-saving ways to help fund Steve’s care. The pair had been saving for a house as Laura said “we just wanted a home to call our own.”

She explained that “everything changed when we got Steve’s diagnosis” and all they then wanted was to be a proper family.

One of Steve’s nurses told them about a charity called Gift of a Wedding.

"Gift of a Wedding put a post about us on their Facebook page and within a matter of days dozens of people came forward offering to donate things towards our big day.”

Patricia Harrison, founder and chair of Gift of a Wedding, said: "I first spoke to Laura in February 2015… "They live in Hyde, which is only a few miles from our head office, so I was really pleased that someone local was going to benefit from our wonderful work.”

Laura’s wedding dress, the flowers, photographs and music were all provided by vendors near their hometown of Hyde. Laura chose a pink and white colour scheme for the wedding party which included the couple’s daughter Lydia, 3, as flower girl.

As of now, Steve is on palliative care and Laura said that they “don’t know what the future holds.” She added that “the kindness of strangers made our day completely unforgettable.”
