Amanda Mellet has been awarded €30,000 in compensation from the Irish Government.

The payment is a result of an earlier United Nation's Human Rights Committee ruling which stated that she had faced "cruel, inhuman treatment" due to Ireland's abortion ban.

Amanda has also been offered counselling and other support services.

The ruling, which occurred in June this year, came after Amanda filed a complaint with the UN after she was forced to "travel" for a termination.

Minister for Health Simon Harris offered the compensation in a meeting on Tuesday evening.

The meeting took place one week before an imposed deadline set out by the UN for Ireland to respond.

In November 2011, Amanda learned that her foetus had congenital heart defects caused by a condition known as Edwards’ syndrome and that it would die in the uterus or shortly after birth.

After being told by her doctors of the serious genetic condition, Amanda was advised to either carry to full term or seek an abortion abroad.

She spent €3,000 on a termination in Liverpool.

Amanda complained that the State’s ban on abortion had violated her human rights under international law, and the United Nation's Human Rights Committee agreed.

"When I read the report from the UNHR Committee I found the experience she went through deeply upsetting," said the Minister for Health.

"Indeed, I have subsequently met with other families who have been through the trauma of knowing their baby will not survive and made the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy abroad and I have been very moved on hearing of their experiences."

A referendum to repeal the Eight Amendment cannot be held until 2018 at the earliest after the Government reached a compromise yesterday… And it's a possible referendum at that.

Fine Gael and the Independent Alliance made an agreement on how to vote on the possible Bill, which is seeking to make abortion legal in Ireland.

The Citizen's Assembly has requested six months to work on the Bill, which they will then send on to an Oireachtas committee.

Fine Gael and Independence Alliance then agreed to an additional six months so the committee can complete their deliberations.

That will mean that a referendum, if proposed by the Citizen's Assembly, cannot be held until early 2018.

However, sources tell the Irish Times that the second half of 2018 will be more likely.

It’s no secret that the Geordie Shore crew are notorious for booze-fuelled nights out and short lived romances.

But it seems MTV’s Scotty T has been living with a number of controversial secrets.

While promoting his new book, Scotty T: A Shore Thing, the reality star confessed to helping a woman obtain an abortion after a one-night stand and to sleeping with almost 1,000 different people.

The 28-year-old Celebrity Big Brother winner explained his relief at learning that the woman did not wish to keep the baby, as at the time he too did not feel ready to become a father.

“She said she felt it was only right to let me know she was pregnant and that she wasn’t going to go through with it,” he told The Sun.

“Forgive me for saying it, but the sudden relief I experienced when she said that she wasn’t planning on keeping the baby was overwhelming, because I knew for sure that I wasn’t ready to be a dad.”

After flying the woman from Northern Ireland to Newcastle, Scotty accompanied her to the clinic “where everything was taken care of quickly and sensitively” before driving her back to the airport and “closing the door on that episode once and for all”.

Scotty went on to assure readers this is the only time he’s found himself in such a situation, despite having been involved with hundreds of women.

He said: “To be honest it was the only occasion this had happened. But I dealt with it properly and respectfully, as should anyone else in that situation.”

This Saturday marks the 5th annual March for Choice in Dublin.

And with TDs and Senators alike coming together in order to repeal the Eight Amendment, it's certainly going to be a day to remember.

The Abortion Rights Campaign is organising the march and their spokesperson Michali Hyams said: “We expect thousands to join the march to call for free, safe and legal abortion in Ireland, our numbers have doubled year on year with 10,000 taking to the streets last September.

"The crowd will assemble at the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square at 1.30pm before marching to Leinster House at 2pm.”

An abundance of TDs and Senators, who are representing almost every party in the Oireachtas will attend a press conference before the march and are expected to speak out before joining ARC for a 1916-themed photocall.

Independent TD Clare Daly said: "The Abortion Rights Campaign’s annual March for Choice will be bigger and bolder than ever.

"The call for a Repeal of the 8th Amendment is turning into a roar, with today's generation demonstrating it is no longer willing to see women treated as second-class citizens."

We're certainly going to be there. Are you?

She became a mum to Josey Hollis Dorsey in September 2015, but this was not Naya Rivera's first pregnancy.

Opening up in her memoir, Sorry Not Sorry, the Glee actress reveals that upon learning she was expecting Ryan Dorsey's child back in 2010, the actress chose to terminate the pregnancy.

While now happily married to Ryan, the actress had, at the time, just ended their relationship and made the decision to seek an abortion without telling Ryan of her pregnancy.

In an incredibly revealing excerpt of her book, 29-year-old Naya reflects on the termination –  which took place a day before filming an episode of the show – and explains that she chose to reveal her decision in an attempt to support other women.

Speaking to People magazine in the run-up to the book's release, she said: "It was very scary to open up about everything, It's not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should."

"I know some people might read it and say, 'What the Hell?' But I hope someone out there gets something out of it," she added.

Naya, who played Santana Lopez in the hit musical show, married Ryan in 2014 before welcoming their son a year later.

As we all know, Irish women face some of the toughest restrictions for abortion and reproductive rights in Europe, but this one website wants to change ALL of that.

Women from Ireland usually have to take great risks if they want to speak publicly about trying to get an abortion, but on the X-ile Project, women are now "giving a face" to the thousands of Irish women who struggle to travel to abortion by sharing their individual photo and story.

The X-ile Project was set up by five Irish women, Julie Morrissey, Ruth Morrissy, Paula Cullen, Laura Lovejoy and Katie O'Neill. They came together to support the women who have been "effectively exiled from Ireland" as a result of the restrictive laws.

The project gathers the photos and names of women who have travelled to England to get an abortion. Then they share the information online in hopes to break down the "overwhelming stigma."

"We aim to demonstrate that those who choose to travel to have an abortion are responsible, ordinary women and are our neighbours, friends, colleagues, mothers, daughters and partners," the group say on their website.

And it seems to be gathering attention all around the globe as UK and US websites like Buzzfeed and The Guardian are weighing in on the women's stories.

“The response has been enthusiastic,” Julie told Buzzfeed. “We’re making positive groundwork in getting people to talk about their experience, and our aim is to build a space for more women to feel like they can speak out.”

In last year alone, more than 3,000 women travelled from Ireland to another country in order to access safe abortion services.

“We want to show solidarity,” said Julie. “These are women who walk among us every day. I’d be surprised if there wasn’t anyone in Ireland who didn’t know someone who has had an abortion, or had one themselves.”
