I have been struggling with acne since my teenage years. Concealer quickly became my best friend when my hormones decided to wreak havoc with my skin.

My Rimmel Hide the Blemish concealer was shoved into my school bag every morning, nestled between my copy of Macbeth and Irish exam papers.

I was completely oblivious about the importance of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising my skin. I’d quickly wash my face with soap and water at night, dab Sudocrem all over my spots and hope for the best.

It wasn’t until I got older that I realised that you need a strong skincare regime to keep those horrid blemishes at bay.

I  eventually discovered the magical world of cleansers, exfoliators, serums, face masks and moisturisers. My acne finally started to subside (with added help from the contraceptive pill.)

As my spots faded, my confidence started to boost. I finally felt good about myself when I looked in the mirror. My college years were a relatively happy time and my acne barely bothered me, despite my new found love for drinking €2 bottles of Koppaberg in Dicey’s on a Tuesday night.

Then, at the age of 24, my acne decided to return and it knocked me for six.

I went through at least six different cleansers. I splashed out on the best skin treatments and got the shock of my life when my Mario Badescu Drying Lotion arrived and saw the tiny bottle. I honestly thought they sent me a sample size.

I was visiting my local Boots every other day with the hope of finding something that would rid me of the pimples that had taken up residence on my face.

I eventually settled on the La Roche-Posay Purifying Cleansing Gel for Oily, Blemish Prone Skin and although I swear by the cleanser, a simple skincare hack is what finally helped shift the dreaded zits.

The last thing you want to do after a long day at work is drag yourself out of bed and wash your makeup off. My best friend and I have to text one another to make sure we wash our faces in the evening. Having an accountability partner is key.

When I do muster up the energy to wash my face I found that cleansing my skin for at least 60 seconds has been the greatest help. We’re all guilty of rushing our skincare routine so we can go back to binge watching Gossip Girl, but it is one of the biggest skincare errors we make. And it was the main cause of my acne.

Aesthetician Nayamka Roberts-Smith said the 60 Second Rule is vital. Since I started following this rule I’ve noticed my skin is clearer, less oily and brighter. I’ve been treating my spots with The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid and my skin is slowly looking less like it did when I was in third year and living on a diet of Freddo bars and onion rings.

This simple change has been the greatest thing I’ve done for my skin in years and it didn’t cost me a penny.

I have struggled with acne and skin problems since my teenage years. And it was never just the odd pimple here and there.

My bad skin stole my confidence and left me feeling like the Creature from the Black Lagoon. It’s something that has really bothered me for most of my adult life.

I tried all the lotions and potions, tips and tricks but no matter what my doctor prescribed or how many facemasks I used, the acne always returned.

My skin looked dull, tired and in dire need of some TLC. It was ridden with spots and acne scars and my complexion looked so sickly.

I was so envious of people with clear and glowing skin. I always felt less worthy than others and felt as glamorous as a garden snail.

Once I turned 25 I decided that this needed to change. I wanted to feel beautiful for once and I knew that clearing my skin would help.

I’m not saying that people with acne aren’t beautiful. I have such a deep admiration for the women on Instagram who are part of the acne positivity movement. They have helped me feel less alone and are breaking the stigma surrounding acne and other skin problems.

However, acne made me feel so low and miserable at times. Éminence reached out to me and sent in some of their skincare range to try.

I’ll admit I was hesitant at first because of the vast amount of products I’ve already tried. I had very low expectations and I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I’ve been using four of their products for a little over a month and my skin feels and looks like I always hoped it would.

It isn’t perfectly clear, mainly because I have developed an addiction to chocolate, but it is supple and smooth thanks to the refreshing Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser. This is one of the best cleansers I’ve ever used. It leaves my skin feeling as fine as silk but doesn’t strip it of its natural oils. It is also free from parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate and propylene glycol which is good news if you’ve got sensitive skin like me.

Another Éminence product that I’ve used every day has been the Sweet Red Rose Tonique. One thing that was really messing my skin up was the air conditioning in our office. It managed to turn my skin into an oily and dry, spotty wreck and nothing could help, until now. The sweet red rose petal extract regenerates the skin while hydrating and soothing dry, sensitive skin. I honestly felt like I had just gotten a facial after spritizing this on my skin.

The other two Éminence products that swiftly became staples of mine are the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant and the Lilikoi Light Defense Face Primer.

The first time I used the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant I honestly felt like I had new skin. It felt as good as new, I couldn’t believe it. The mild exfoliant is so gentle on your skin but manages to work wonders without feeling too harsh. I tend to use this product two or three times a week and it has seriously helped clear my acne up. It removes dead skin and helps heal damaged skin too, which is exactly what I need in a product.

I have to be honest and say I rarely ever use primer, which is probably why my concealer seems to vanish by lunchtime. I made more of an effort with the  Lilikoi Light Defense Face Primer and I’m so glad I did.

Not only does it protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, an essential for pasty pale ladies like me, but it gives you a glow that I’ve only ever had after running after the 46a on Nassau Street.

These Éminence products have helped my skin, but most importantly they’ve given me a much needed confidence boost that I’ve been yearning for for years.

And one final perk- they are natural, cruelty-free and completely against animal testing. I know they’re a little more expensive than other brands, but they are worth every single penny.

If we’ve learned anything from the last few years, it’s that representation matters.

Big issues like the representation of different skin tones, body sizes and disabilities are fought for on the reg by various strong-ass women and require real change in the minds of the powers that be.

However, calling the media out on a lack of inclusion is only one way to change things. Love Island in particular have been receiving flack for their lack of inclusion on the show, predominantly with body sizing.

Image: ITV

Applauding small changes is another. Once these powers realise that we WANT to see ourselves and our peers represented, things will change.

Even this year, campaigns like Dove's stunning #ShowUs effort have been proving to the media industry that the public want to see every type of person in advertisements and on our screens.

From all gender binaries, sexual orientations, ethnicities, abilities and sizes to vitiligo to scarring; Why should only one type of person be represented on screen when perfection is a myth?

When flawlessness and perfection no longer sell, when ‘one size fits all’ doesn’t appeal to the masses; that’s when media organisations, beauty companies and the entertainment industry begin to change their tune.

On the topic of applauding small steps, the last two episodes of Love Island have sparked praise in one particular area: skin.

Every single human being has experienced bad skin at one point in their lives. Some of us suffered through teenage acne and have the scars to prove it. Many have had to deal with life-altering skin related issues from complex conditions to unfortunate accidents. Skin is at the centre of beauty campaigns and we are bombarded with an image of what perfectly clear skin ‘should’ look like, err single day.

The cute and bubbly new contestant on the ITV reality show, Francesca Allen, has received some appreciative feedback for choosing to allow her skin to breathe free. She has visible spots and we are SO ready for them. This was also true for Lucie when she took her makeup off each night and revealed 'normal' skin. Maura is over there representing all pale Irish beauties whose faces don't match their necks after a night out.

Image: Twitter/@pepsicolapop

There should never be a strict definition of what constitutes 'normal' skin. 'Normal' to us is what we're shown the most, which is perfection.

However, in reality there are millions of skin disorders and types in the world that don't get shown on screens globally. Our skin is a vital organ, and it's unique to each person.

Image: Twitter/@imaginebane

One Love Island viewer tweeted she was; "nearly crying at the fact Francesca has acne scarring". Another got emotional stating it was "refreshing" for someone who struggles with their skin every day "to see an amazingly beautiful girl like Francesca show off her bare face and acne to the world without shame". These are real people, lets remember. Real people who are thankful to see something familiar on the small screen.

Image: Twitter/@micckjaggerr

Though each islander is stunningly beautiful in their own ways, imperfections show their humanity. Just because they're on a screen doesn't mean they aren't just like us. That the kids watching them – and yes there are kids as young as 12 waiting up for the series each night- can see that skin imperfections can be gorgeous and above all, normal.

Considering Francesca's skin is still by advertising and media standards damn near perfect, it says a lot that the response to even a few minor scars has been incredibly positive and emotional.

A teeny tiny step, y’all say, but if we don’t applaud the tiny steps; the larger ones will be further out of reach. Celebrate the minor achievements and aim higher.

Now… Crack on with some stretch marks, dermatological disorders and cellulite please, ITV. We want to feel seen.

I must admit there have been nights when I’ve curled up in my bed with the remainder of the day's makeup still on my face. I’d go to bed feeling slightly guilty and fully aware that I’d be greeted by some delightful spots when I looked in the mirror the next morning.

As someone who suffers from acne, I’m usually really strict with my skincare regime, but I’m sure everyone’s had those nights when all you want to do is jump into bed and abandon your skincare routine.

One night won’t do any harm we mutter to ourselves, but we’re so wrong.

The best thing we can do after wearing makeup all day is to let your skin breathe.

Cleansing the skin is one step we should never avoid, especially if you’re wearing a lot of makeup on a daily basis.

Makeup artists Lauren Murphy and Elizabeth Rita shared their top skincare tips at the launch of Nivea’s MicellAIR Skin Breathe Professional range.

Both Lauren and Elizabeth said double cleansing is the best thing you can do to keep your skin feeling clean and looking healthy.

They explained how cleansing once removes the makeup, oil and dirt on your skin, which is essential but many of us are guilty of neglecting the double cleanse.

Lauren stressed the importance of double cleansing because the second time you cleanse actually cleans your skin leaving it feeling smooth and supple.

She also reminded us of the areas we tend to forget about when cleansing. Lauren said cleansing the hairline, jaw, neck and ear area is just as important as any other part.

We found a product that will encourage you to double cleanse every night, even when you come crawling home after drinking one too many G&T's.

The MicellAIR Professional Micellar Water is bound to become your new holy grail product this winter. It has a unique and innovative light-weight formula that effectively removes long-wear face and eye makeup while deeply cleansing the skin, in one easy step.

Pick up a bottle of the MicellAIR Professional Micellar Water for a mere €6.99. You can thank us later.

Hailey Baldwin has hit the headlines daily over the last while, but mainly for her relationship and pre-celibate marriage to singer Justin Bieber.

However, something more pressing has occurred to us about her that we feel compelled to share; her skincare regime.

The 22-year-old model has glowing skin and is a BareMinerals global ambassador, so we need to know ANY secrets she harbours that could help us prevent breakouts.

According to Refinery29, Hailey's secret formula for protecting her skin is actually: nappy rash cream? Oh, this we have to hear.

Apparently, she deals with her share of breakouts herself which are linked to birth control, which she has only started a few months ago. Contraceptives and hormones are well-known to wreak havoc on our pores.

Though she admits she'd gladly accept spots and blackheads over a little baby being born, she's WINNING that dewy skin-game. Like we got a magnifying glass and cannot find a blemish at all.

She's still in the honeymoon phase in terms of her wedded life with Mr Biebs, but how is her skin so damn radiant?

"For me, I do think a lot of it is genetics. Both of my parents have great skin; they look super young. I also think it’s how you take care of your skin. There are some girls that I know who sleep with their freaking makeup on and their skin is clear. That is not a thing for me," she said.

"I’m big on keeping my skin clean and drinking a lot of water. It’s also diet — if I go a couple of days eating cheeseburgers, my skin is not going to look great."

She opened up about how birth control is affecting her skincare:

"I think sometimes, like with hormones, you can’t control it. Over the last few months, I’ve been on birth control, which I’ve never done before, and that threw off my hormones for sure and made my skin go off. I was getting little tiny things here and there, and they just hurt."

"I talked about it with my doctor and came to find it’s because the hormones from the birth control mess with your natural balance. You just have to be patient, let it happen, and let it even out. For me, I’d take that over having a baby right now, so…" Fair gal, same here.

Here's where the nappy rash cream comes in…

"I use any normal spot cream — something that has a good acne fighter, like benzoyl peroxide. The problem with that, though, is it burns my skin a little bit and my skin is so sensitive and it gets dry so easily."

"I have found that diaper rash cream is a great thing for bringing down redness and healing. If you think about what it’s actually used for, which is red bumpy skin, it’s essentially the same thing. Diaper rash cream is great for under-eye bags, too."

There you go gals, give it a try.

Kendall Jenner has opened up to Allure about her self-esteem issues surrounding her acne and skincare routine since she was 14-years-old.

She only revealed to the world last month that she is a long-time sufferer of the skin condition which plagues mainly young teens around the world.

Taking to Instagram back in January, she wrote to her fans; "While there are much bigger problems happening in the world, suffering from acne for me was debilitating. It’s something that I’ve dealt with since I was a young teen and has caused me to feel anxious, helpless and insecure."

Jenner's goal is to create a conversation surrounding image and insecurity; "I didn’t think I’d see the day where I would feel confident posting a makeup free picture. My goal is to open up a dialogue around skin positivity.

Now, she has stated that the online haters as well as her acne has made her cry for days in the past. We've all had a bit of a sob when a massive spot surfaces on the exact day you have an important event on, it's so cruel.

She revealed more about her young life to Allure;

"I've always struggled with a bit of acne since I was around 14. It killed a lot of self-esteem and I had to really work past that." She is also a person who detests when her pimples are pointed out to her, as we all are.

A break-out at the Golden Globes caused her endless stress, saying, "I was feeling good about myself, and then when people say mean things I'm like, 'I know I have a zit. I know I'm breaking out. You guys don't have to keep pointing it out. I obviously see that, but let me live.'"

She admitted;

"I have cried endlessly for days because of things people have said to me, and I've had to become stronger through it. I mean, don't get me wrong: I am not superhuman. I definitely feel, and the things people say online are very hurtful."

We're happy for her that she's found a great skincare routine that works for her, and is starting the conversation. Young women are under such pressure to look picture perfect 24 hours a day.

Most women have, at some point in their lives, experienced the pain of cystic acne.

At 15 it's already quite embarrassing, but when it happens to you at 27, it can turn your life into a nightmare.

Every time someone looks at you, you think 'they are 100% starring at my spots.' Sometimes it gets so embarrassing that you actually start cancelling on your friends with the excuse that you're not feeling well,' when truth is, you just can't face being seen in that state.

Internet can be a great resource to search for new treatments or ways to hide your acne. For me, the saviour was named Lisa Eldridge.

Thanks to her technique, I managed to cover up most of the damage.

After trying many, many creams and serums to try and get rid of those ugly spots on my face, I noticed two products started working and really helped me get rid of pimples and marks.

I wont leave ypu in suspense -firstly, I started applying tea tree oil on the spots. It might seems counter intuitive to apply oil on spots, but this natural ingredient proved more effective than any other wands and sticks I have tried before.

The second great discover was a product that I heard about scrolling the Internet about potential solutions to my problem. I bought it, and day after day, I could literally witness the spots healing, and gradually, less and less new spots appearing.

The name of this magic cream? Avène TriAcnéal Expert.

This orangey cream is an evening moisturiser that targets blemishes, marks and the first signs of ageing (sure why not), especially targetting women in the 20s to 30s. In a matter of weeks, my skin got clearer and new spots stopped appearing.

Did I just get lucky?

Did my hormones finally decide to leave my poor skin alone? I couldn't be sure, but I know that when I was at the highest of the crisis, I would have loved to hear about a product that saved someone else's skin.

Avène TriAcnéal Expert is available in Boots for €32 but it costs a mere €12 if you buy it in a French pharmacy.

All eyes were on Kendall Jenner's Twitter page this evening as her millions of fans awaited a well hyped announcement from the reality TV star.

Momager Kris Jenner took to Twitter yesterday to share a video of Kendall discussing her 'most raw story' with the world, teasing the clip and encouraging people to tune into Kendall's Twitter tonight.

'Make sure to watch @KendallJenner’s Twitter on Sunday night to find out what I’m talking about and be prepared to be moved,' she wrote.

'I’m so proud of my darling @KendallJenner for being so brave and vulnerable.'

'Seeing you share her most raw story in order to make a positive impact for so many people and help foster a positive dialogue is a testament to the incredible woman you’ve become.'

Kendall's announcement turned out to be a sponsorship with acne treatment company Proactiv.

The model revealed that after images of her were released following walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes when she was 21 made her feel even more insecure about her acne, she decided to try the brand.

Proactiv is well known for it's infomercials featuring celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry and Lindsay Lohan.

'After the Globes, when Proactiv asked if I’d like to try their products, I thought, ‘You know what, I may as well give it a shot, I’m desperate,' she told Vogue.

However, fans are giving Kendal mixed feedback to her announcement. 'Everyone gets pimples so….. what's the brave story sis,' tweeted one.

Most seem disappointed that Kendall's hyped reveal is a brand ambassadorship, but it will certainly be empowering for young people to hear a powerhouse like Kendall Jenner discuss how struggling with acne impacted her life.

Those of us who go head-to-head with our oily skin daily will relate to the eternal struggle of wanting to have hydrated skin, but trying not to look like a high-shine mirror throwing out spotlight reflections from our faces. IS THIS TOO MUCH TO ASK, PEOPLE?

It’s fine. I’m fine. The shine show must go on.

Now that it’s Winter, the game is changing. We’ve put together a Beauty Bible of sorts on the Great Oily Skin Battle of 2018. It’s a thing.

Our skin of course is more than just dry, oily, acne-prone etc. We are nuanced beings, and this is no different when it comes to our skin.

The question is, why do some of us suffer more from oily skin in the winter, and others suffer with dryness?

It seems unfair, between having to glue ourselves to our hot water bottles and getting up when it’s still dark, why should our skin be causing us problems on top of that?

Michele Farber of Schweiger Dermatology Group claims that: “Skin can become more oily as a mechanism to compensate for excess dryness. The skin will overcompensate in sebum or oil production to moisturise itself.”

Rude much? Never fear, we're here to save the shiny day. Here are our top tips for combating oily skin during winter, thank us later…

A post shared by Spa Sublime (@spasublime) on

1. Prioritise and Moisturise

You might think that moisturising skin which is already oily is a mistake, how ever oily skin compensates for excess dryness, so keeping it hydrated is KEY.

The right moisturiser for you is like getting a bra fitting, it can be a hassle but so worth the results if you’re patient enough. Each and every one of us has unique skin cells, so it can be next to impossible to find the skin regime for us.

There are dozens and dozens of moisturisers on the market, but our personal recommendation is to use one with Vitamin E.

2. Watch your Tone

Yon-Ka ESSENTIALS have the BEST lotion on the market – it’s an alcohol free invigorating mist for normal to oily skin and contains five essential oils. Their ESSENTIALS range start your beauty regime the right way- with cleansing.

They work to gently purity and optimise the effectiveness of your everyday care regimen, and leaves your skin soft and hydrated.

Use after cleansing and spray onto the face as a mist in the  morning and at night for best results.

3. Avoid using petroleum jelly
According to make-up artist Katey Denno, petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can create the illusion of granting us moisturised skin, but actually the substance suffocates your pores.

It’s water-repellant and not water-soluble, so it actually just seals the barrier so that moisture cannot leave the skin.

Basically you're actually drying out your pores by keeping out the air and moisture, while it's thick texture makes it tricky to cleanse the skin. It's literally a lose-lose, gals.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Hot showers in the winter are widely recognised as stripping your skin of it’s essential oils, thereby preventing it from achieving moisture.

By using tea tree oil with warm water, this makes up for the loss of moisture and brings your skin back to its supple self in no time.

5. It’s all about keeping the pores happy

Changes in the weather make our pores hella cranky.

Environmental causes are some of the major factors in skin issues, meaning that our pores have a bit of a ‘mare in the winter especially. Our skin has its own survival techniques which can be the bane of our facial lives, but really it’s just trying to do it’s job.

6. Don’t let it dry out

Farber also claims that “If your skin is dry, it’ll often feel tight and have a white-ish flaking more diffused all over the face. Oily skin will often concentrate around sebaceous areas, like the T-zone, and pores in this areas may be visibly larger.”

Dry skin translates to an overproduction of sebum and oils, most likely because of the extreme temperate changes from freezing cold outdoors to overheated indoors.

7. Keeping your skin cleansed is a MUST- no matter what type you are.

Yon-Ka ESSENTIAL Masque 103 is a purifying, clarifying mask which may actually save your skin, become the love of your life and have your kids all at once. A bold claim for a bold product.

This detoxifying mask contains three types of clay which purify the skin, tighten pores, brighten the complexion and leave it with an exceptional glow.

Glow up, shine down. It's ideal.

8. Stay THURSTY

Drink as much water as you are physically capable of every day, and your pores will thank you for it- guaranteed. Everyone needs different amounts, the two litres per day ‘fact’ is most likely a myth but if your body is dehydrated then so is your skin, that math adds up.

9. Use a clean towel whenever you are washing that lovely face of yours!

You don’t want any bacteria present in the towel to be transferred right back onto your face. Pat your skin dry instead of roughly trying to rub the make-up or skin cells off.

Clean towels prevent oily skin and breakouts, so they’re essentially your undercover guardian angel. Wash them at LEAST once a week, folks.

There you have it, nine core tips for surviving the winter with oily skin.

Remember that each person is totally unique, and research and discover what products feel right for you. Treat your skin with the care and calm it deserves, you’ll be radiant and glowing in no time without the unwanted shine.

Skin break outs happen to the best of us..even the perma-glowy Millie Mackintosh.

Thank f*ck for that, we here you say.

The 28-year-old former Made In Chelsea star took to Instagram stories share her acne woes with her 1.3 million followers.

Luckily for Mills, she could pop to get some light therapy done when she started to suffer with her complexion.

She explained in her post that her skin ''has been breaking out since my wedding…not sure if it's the heat or what, off to get some light therapy @drfrancesprennajones will let you know how I get on!"

Later that evening, Millie posted again about her skin troubles, saying how it made her feel ''rubbish.''

Her solution to it all?

Lash on a pair of oversized sunnies. Yep, it works for pretty much everything tbh.

So what is this light therapy that she was getting and can we afford it if we don't live in Chelsea?

Well, the treatment involves using controlled artificial ultraviolet light to help reduce symptoms and slows the progress of common skin conditions.

Shockingly, getting the treatment done with a dermatologist is super pricey.

So for those of us who aren't socialites, there are brands like Neutrogena who do a Light Therapy Mask, and it does pretty much the same job.

Things aren't all bad for Millie however, as she is recently back from her sun-drenched honeymoon in Crete following her wedding to Hugo Taylor on June 22nd.

She shared the whole holiday with us, posting envy-inducing snaps of blue skies, sandy beaches and gorgeous bohemian outfits. We're so not jel at all.

Here's hoping that her acne troubles are behind her as she starts married life – we think she still looks gorgeous anyway.
